This study aimed to investigate the psychological functioning of athletes in Serbia during the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. We investigated the relationships of different coping strategies ...(problem-focused, emotion-focused, and avoidant coping), intolerance of uncertainty, and perceived levels of depression, anxiety, and stress. A total of 117 athletes took part in this study (62.40% male, average age 29.95). The results showed that the use of avoidant coping and problem-focused strategies were associated with poorer indicators of mental health. Furthermore, intolerance of uncertainty had both direct and indirect (via avoidant coping strategies) effects on experienced levels of depression, anxiety, and stress.
This review summarizes the available literature on the non-formal education of sports coaches. Considering the complexity of the sports coaches' job, it is recognized that formal education alone is ...not sufficient, and non-formal education within this field may need to be mandatory. Earlier studies suggested that motivation and personality could be crucial predictors of the willingness to continuously learn. The most promising motivational theory in the context of education is the self-determination theory, which emphasizes that even controlled, external motivation could be internalized. Furthermore, some personality traits (e.g., curiosity, conscientiousness) are associated with non-formal education and should, therefore, be fostered even in those individuals who did not autonomously decide to enroll in a program. This review also identified a clear lack of studies investigating the motivational and personality determinants of non-formal education in sports coaches, and future studies should aim to fill this gap.
Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is characterized by medically unexplained persistent or reoccurring fatigue lasting at least 6 months. CFS has a multifactorial pathogenesis in which oxidative stress ...(OS) plays a prominent role. Treatment is with a vitamin and mineral supplement, but this therapeutic option so far has not been properly researched.
This prospective study included 38 women of reproductive age consecutively diagnosed by CDC definition of CFS and treated with a multivitamin mineral supplement. Before and after the 2-month supplementation, SOD activity was determined and patients self-assessed their improvement in 2 questionnaires: the Fibro Fatigue Scale (FFS) and the Quality of Life Scale (SF36). Results There was a significant improvement in SOD activity levels; and significant decreases in fatigue (p=0.0009), sleep disorders (p=0.008), autonomic nervous system symptoms (p=0.018), frequency and intensity of headaches (p=0.0001), and subjective feeling of infection (p=0.0002). No positive effect on quality of life was found.
Treatment with a vitamin and mineral supplement could be a safe and easy way to improve symptoms and quality of life in patients with CFS.
Wastewater from abattoirs in some countries is disposed of into water bodies
without adequate removal of contaminants. Therefore, the use of wastewater
in fish production could pose a serious risk ...for humans, fish and other
aquatic organisms due to possible transfer of pathogenic bacteria in aquatic
culture environments. The aims of the present study were to assess the
levels of individual microorganisms in different tissues of common carp and
to determine any correlation with the season of sampling and the type of
analysed sample in common carp reared in an integrated production system
that used purified water from an abattoir. A fish pond was filled mostly
with purified water from an abattoir, but also partly with well water. Carp
fingerlings were stocked in the earthen fishpond in March and reared in
ambient conditions. Fish were collected in the spring and autumn of the
following year and the microbiological quality was assessed. Carp fillets
with skin, gills and digestive tract samples were collected individually
under aseptic conditions. All analyses were performed according to standard
procedures. The levels of all the examined bacteria in the fish were under
prescribed hygiene norms. Also, Listeria spp., sulphite-reducing clostridia
and Staphylococcus aureus were not found in the samples. Furthermore,
pathogenic bacteria, Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes were not isolated
from the samples. The hygienic quality of the fish produced in purified
waste water from an abattoir was acceptable, and the common carp meat was
safe for human consumption.

Copper is essential micronutrient and has an important role in the human body. The serum copper increases during pregnancy and is doubled at full term. Lower levels of serum copper in pregnancy are ...connected with some pathological conditions.
The aim of this study was to estimate the levels of serum copper in normal and pathological pregnancies, comparing them with values of serum copper in non-pregnant women, to determine if serum copper is lower in some pathological pregnancies and if this is of some importance.
A total of 2170 plasma samples for copper analyses were made in the following groups: healthy non-pregnant women; healthy pregnant women from the 5th-40th gestational week, during the first delivery stage and during the first three postpartum weeks, in pregnant women with habitual abortion, imminent abortion, abortion in progress, missed abortion (9th-24th weeks), missed labour and premature rupture of membranes (29th-40th weeks). Levels of serum copper were determined by colorimetric technique of bathocuproin with disulphate as a chromogen.
Serum copper values in non-pregnant women range from 11.6-25.8 micromol/L. In healthy pregnant women, there is a constant trend of the increase of serum copper. The mean serum copper values revealed three significant peaks at the 22nd, 27th and 35th gestational week. Serum copper values in the patients with some pathological pregnancies in relation to the serum copper values of the healthy pregnant women were significantly lower.
Serum copper values can be used as an indicator of some pathological pregnancies.
Abstract
Wastewater from slaughterhouses in many countries is still discharged into rivers, without having been adequately treated. Such wastewater contains plenty of organic matter which is an ideal ...source of nutrients for fish, but also for the development of microorganisms. Thus, usage of wastewater in aquaculture could become a health risk for humans, fish due to the introduction of microorganisms into the aquatic environment. In the available literature, there is insufficient data on health and meat safety regarding common carp reared in purified wastewater. The aim of this study was to assess the health and meat safety of common carp cultivated in a fishpond supplemented with slaughterhouse wastewater that was subjected to tertiary treatment. The number of parasites was not significant and not a single parasitic disease was found in this study, but the number of parasite species detected was as expected and typical for carp production. No spring viraemia of carp or koi herpesvirus disease was found. The carp cultivated were in good health and completely safe for human consumption in terms of the presence of microbial contaminants. The safe use of wastewater for fish rearing should be encouraged, but proper treatment of wastewater must be applied before its use.
Chronic fatigue syndrome is a debilitating disease of unclear cause and pathogenesis. It affects mostly women from lower socioeconomic classes. There is mounting evidence that oxidative stress, ...specifically lipid peroxidation (LPO) contributes to the disease process. We investigated levels of LPO and its possible consequences for these patients.
Forty women aged 15-45 years who fulfilled the 1994 Centers for Disease Control's diagnostic criteria for chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) with no comorbidities were recruited and were age matched to a control group of 40 healthy women. Levels of total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), LDL cholesterol (LDLc), HDL cholesterol (HDLc), and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were measured.
Although initial statistical analyses showed no differences between groups (P=.345), when subdivided according to the level of MDA, a difference was found in the subgroup of high-level MDA (P=.034). There was a negative correlation between HDLc and MDA levels (r=0.3; P=.046), a positive correlation between TG and MDA levels (r=0.4; P=.006), and lower levels of HDL cholesterol in the CFS group (P=.036).
High levels of MDA, positively correlated with TG and lower HDL levels, might be indicative of proatherogenic events in female CFS patients, a group not otherwise considered a risk for atherosclerosis.
