Background
Tardive dyskinesia (TD), a movement disorder in which patients experience abnormal involuntary movements, can have profound negative impacts on physical, cognitive, and psychosocial ...functioning. The Abnormal Involuntary Movement Scale (AIMS), a clinician-rated outcome, is considered the gold standard for evaluating treatment efficacy in TD clinical trials. However, it provides little information about the impacts of uncontrolled movements from a patient perspective and can be cumbersome to administer in clinical settings. The Tardive Dyskinesia Impact Scale (TDIS) was developed as a patient-reported outcome measure to fulfill the need for a disease-specific impact assessment in TD. The objective of the present study was to develop and evaluate the psychometric properties of the TDIS to determine whether it is fit-for-purpose to measure TD impact.
Methods
Data from qualitative studies and phase 3 trials of a VMAT2 inhibitor for the treatment of TD (KINECT3 and KINECT4) were used to determine the psychometric properties of the TDIS. Qualitative research included concept elicitation and cognitive debriefing interviews with TD patients and their caregivers in order to assess how well the TDIS captured key domains of TD impact. Quantitative analyses to examine the psychometric properties of the TDIS included assessing construct validity (factor structure, known groups, and predictive validity) and responsiveness to change.
Results
Qualitative results showed that the TDIS captures the key TD impacts reported by patients and caregivers and that the TDIS was interpreted as intended and relevant to patients’ experiences. Quantitative results found evidence of 2 underlying domains of the TDIS: physical and socioemotional (Comparative Fit Index > 0.9). Known groups and predictive validity indicated that, compared with the AIMS, the TDIS captures unique content (correlation between AIMS and TDIS = 0.2–0.28). The TDIS showed responsiveness to change in treatment, with TDIS scores improving over 48 weeks in the 2 phase 3 trials.
Conclusions
The TDIS captures relevant information about the impact of TD and is easily administered in a clinician’s office or patient’s home. It may be used longitudinally to show changes in TD burden over time. The TDIS complements the AIMS; using these assessments together provides a more holistic assessment of TD.

Tardive dyskinesia is a condition where people have uncontrollable movements because of taking certain medications for a long time. It is still poorly understood how these uncontrollable movements affect a person’s everyday activities. We created a questionnaire called the Tardive Dyskinesia Impact Scale (TDIS). The TDIS is a questionnaire where people with tardive dyskinesia rate how their symptoms affect daily activities such as speaking and walking. People can also rate how the uncontrollable movements make them feel. We used specific tests called psychometric tests to see if the TDIS measures the correct information and if the information is reliable. Findings from this study show that the TDIS is a good way to measure how a person’s uncontrollable movements affect everyday activities. The results also show that when people take medicine to help with their symptoms, their TDIS scores are better. When patients stopped taking the medicine, their symptoms were worse, and their TDIS score was worse. The TDIS can help people explain how their uncontrollable movements affect their daily life. This can then help their doctors understand the person’s condition better.

Criminal justice involved (CJS) populations with opioid use disorder (OUD) have high rates of relapse, future arrests, and death upon release. While medication for OUD (MOUD) reduces opioid relapse, concerns regarding diversion and stigma limit treatment in CJS populations. Extended release naltrexone (XR-NTX), as an opioid antagonist, may be more acceptable to CJS administrators. However, the impact of XR-NTX on criminal recidivism remains unknown.
Arrest data from a published randomized trial comparing XR-NTX to treatment as usual (TAU) was captured by self-report and official state arrest records. Comparisons of future arrests, time to first arrest and total number of arrests were performed using chi square tests and multivariable generalized regression models. Secondary outcomes explored differences in arrests by type and severity of crime, use of opioid and other drugs, and study phase.
Of 308 participants randomized, 300 had arrest data. The incidence of arrests did not differ between XR-NTX (47.6%) and TAU (42.5%) participants. (ChiSq p = 0.37). Additionally, there was no significant difference in time to first arrest (adjusted HR 1.35, CI 0.96–1.89) and number of arrests per participant (adjusted IR 1.33, CI 0.78–2.27). Controlling for gender, age, previous criminal activity, and use of non-opioid drugs, logistic regression demonstrated no significant difference in incidence of arrests between groups (adjusted OR 1.38, 95% CI 0.85–2.22).
We detected no significant difference in arrests between CJS participants with OUD randomized to XR-NTX or TAU. Despite its efficacy in reducing opioid use, XR-NTX alone may be insufficient to reduce criminal recidivism.

OBJECTIVE: Since signals for cocaine induce limbic brain activation in animals and cocaine craving in humans, the objective of this study was to test whether limbic activation occurs during ...cue-induced craving in humans. METHOD: Using positron emission tomography, the researchers measured relative regional cerebral blood flow (CBF) in limbic and comparison brain regions of 14 detoxified male cocaine users and six cocaine-naive comparison subjects during exposure to both non-drug-related and cocaine-related videos and during resting baseline conditions. RESULTS: During the cocaine video, the cocaine users experienced craving and showed a pattern of increases in limbic (amygdala and anterior cingulate) CBF and decreases in basal ganglia CBF relative to their responses to the nondrug video. This pattern did not occur in the cocaine-naive comparison subjects, and the two groups did not differ in their responses in the comparison regions (i.e., the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, cerebellum, thalamus, and visual cortex). CONCLUSIONS: These findings indicate that limbic activation is one component of cue-induced cocaine craving. Limbic activation may be similarly involved in appetitive craving for other drugs and for natural rewards.
Abstract
Objective
To examine the risk of developing aberrant behaviors that might lead to a substance use disorder (addiction) when prescribing opioids for the relief of chronic noncancer pain in ...primary care settings.
Design
Longitudinal, prospective, descriptive design with repeated measures.
Setting
Private community-based internal medicine and family medicine clinics.
Subjects
Patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain.
Methods
Standardized measures of patient status (pain, functional impairment, psychiatric disorders, family history) and treatments provided, urine drug monitoring, and medical chart audits (presence of aberrant drug-related behaviors) were obtained in a cohort of 180 patients at the time of initiating opioids for chronic noncancer pain and at three, six, and 12 months thereafter.
Results
Over the 12-month follow-up period, subjects demonstrated stable, mild to moderate levels of depression (PHQ-9 scores ranging from 9.43 to 10.92), mild anxiety (BAI scores ranging from 11.80 to 14.67), minimal aberrant drug-related behaviors as assessed by chart reviews, and a low percentage of illicit drug use as revealed by results of urine drug monitoring. Less than 5% of our study population revealed any evidence of substance use disorder.
Conclusions
This prospective study suggests that patients without a recent or prior history of substance use disorder who were prescribed primarily short-acting opioids in low doses for chronic noncancer pain have a low risk for developing a substance use disorder. This finding supports the importance of prescreening patients being considered for opioid therapy and that prescription of opioids for noncancer pain may carry a lower risk of abuse in selected populations such as in private, community-based practices.
Colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) are promising materials for solar cells because their optoelectronic properties are easily adjusted by control of their size, structure and composition. We present ...calculations of the band gap and radiative lifetime for varying core diameter and shell thickness of CdSe/CdTe core/shell Type II CQDs using a combination of single particle (2,6)-band k·p and many-electron configuration interaction (CI) Hamiltonians. These calculations are validated by comparison with experimental absorption spectra and photoluminescence decay data. The results are then incorporated into a model of photovoltaic efficiency which demonstrates how the overall performance of a solar cell based on Type II CQDs is affected by changes in the core/shell geometry. The largest effect on photovoltaic efficiency is found to be due to the longer radiative lifetime produced by increasing the shell thickness.

Laboratory models, both animal and human, have made enormous contributions to our understanding of addiction. For addictive disorders, animal models have the great advantage of possessing both face ...validity and a significant degree of predictive validity, already demonstrated. Another important advantage to this field is the ability of reciprocal interplay between preclinical and clinical experiments. These models have made important contributions to the development of medications to treat addictive disorders and will likely result in even more advances in the future. Human laboratory models have gone beyond data obtained from patient histories and enabled investigators to make direct observations of human drug self-administration and test the effects of putative medications on this behavior. This review examines in detail some animal and human models that have led not only to important theories of addiction mechanisms but also to medications shown to be effective in the clinic.

We present the first record of Rhizophora mangle (Malpighiales: Rhizophoraceae) as a host of Acalles sablensisBlatchley, 1920 (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Cryptorhynchinae) in the Ramsar site No. 1602 ...of the Mangroves and Wetlands of Tuxpan. The presence was recorded of dead Rhizophora mangle propagules that presented perforations in the bark. Beetles of the family Curculionidae was found within the propagules and identified as Acalles sablensis. This species has previously only been recorded in Cape Sable and Chokoloskee, Florida, USA, in 1920 and 1922 in dead branches of Sideroxylon celastrina (Kunth) T. D. Penn (Ericales: Sapotaceae) (Blatchley 1920, 1922). This study represents the first report of this curculionid species in Mexico.

Heroin addiction is a complicated medical and psychiatric issue, with well-established as well as newer modes of treatment. The case of Ms W, a 50-year-old woman with a long history of opiate ...addiction who has been treated successfully with methadone for 9 years and who now would like to consider newer alternatives, illustrates the complex issues of heroin addiction. The treatment of heroin addiction as a chronic disease is reviewed, including social, medical, and cultural issues and pharmacologic treatment with methadone and the more experimental medication options of buprenorphine and naltrexone.
