In the cuprates, high-temperature superconductivity, spin-density-wave order, and charge-density-wave (CDW) order are intertwined, and symmetry determination is challenging due to domain formation. ...We investigated the CDW in the prototypical cuprate La_{1.88}Sr_{0.12}CuO_{4} via x-ray diffraction employing uniaxial pressure as a domain-selective stimulus to establish the unidirectional nature of the CDW unambiguously. A fivefold enhancement of the CDW amplitude is found when homogeneous superconductivity is partially suppressed by magnetic field. This field-induced state provides an ideal search environment for a putative pair-density-wave state.

Fibre reinforced concrete (FRC) has advantages, such as minimizing cracking, increasing the composite absorption of energy and enhancing the residual strength. At the same time, the demand for ...sustainability led to the development of using construction and demolition waste as recycled aggregates in structural and non-structural components. The aim of this study is to analyse the technical and environmental feasibility of using fibre reinforced recycled aggregate concrete (FRRAC) in pavements. An experimental program was carried out to assess the mechanical behaviour of the FRC and FRRAC. Then, a case of study was performed to evaluate the feasibility of using FRRAC in pavements design, in which the fibre content and CO2 emissions (CE) were estimated for different slab thicknesses. It was observed that, to support the same design loads, slabs thicker than 0.22 m require similar fibre contents, independently of the concrete mix. Besides, it was confirmed that the CE are lower for the alternative with recycled aggregate for slab thicknesses higher than 0.20 m. In conclusion, these results open up the possibility of using FRRAC to produce more sustainable rigid pavements.
•Slabs with natural and recycled aggregate can present similar post-cracking behaviour.•In terms of CO2 emissions, steel fibres may play a bigger role than aggregates.•Relations with fibre content and slab thickness may optimize pavement design.•Relations with slab thickness and CO2 emissions lead to more sustainable pavement.•Fibre reinforced recycled aggregate concrete is potentially feasible for pavements.

The minimal ingredients to explain the essential physics of layered copper-oxide (cuprates) materials remains heavily debated. Effective low-energy single-band models of the copper-oxygen orbitals ...are widely used because there exists no strong experimental evidence supporting multi-band structures. Here, we report angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy experiments on La-based cuprates that provide direct observation of a two-band structure. This electronic structure, qualitatively consistent with density functional theory, is parametrised by a two-orbital (Formula: see text and Formula: see text) tight-binding model. We quantify the orbital hybridisation which provides an explanation for the Fermi surface topology and the proximity of the van-Hove singularity to the Fermi level. Our analysis leads to a unification of electronic hopping parameters for single-layer cuprates and we conclude that hybridisation, restraining d-wave pairing, is an important optimisation element for superconductivity.
The enzyme α-Galactosidase (α-D-galactoside galactohydrolase EC 3.2.1.22) is an exoglycosidase that hydrolyzes the terminal α-galactosyl moieties of glycolipids and glycoproteins. It is ubiquitous in ...nature and possesses extensive applications in the food, pharma, and biotechnology industries. The present study aimed to purify α-galactosidase from Klebsiella pneumoniae, a bacterium isolated from the human oral cavity. The purification steps involved ammonium sulfate precipitation (70 %), dialysis, ion exchange chromatography using a DEAE-cellulose column, and affinity monolith chromatography. The sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) analysis was used to determine the molecular weight of the purified enzyme. The kinetic constants, Michaelis constant (Km) and maximal velocity (Vmax), for this enzyme were determined by using p-nitrophenyl-α-D-galactopyranoside as substrate. The results showed that the purification fold, specific activity, and yield were 126.52, 138.58 units/mg, and 21.5 %, respectively. The SDS-PAGE showed that the molecular weight of the purified enzyme was 75 kDa. The optimum pH and temperature of the purified α-galactosidase were detected at pH 6.0 and 50 °C, respectively. The kinetic constants, Michaelis constant (Km) and maximal velocity (Vmax), for this enzyme were 4.6 mM and 769.23 U/ml, respectively. α-galactosidase from Klebsiella pneumoniae was purified and characterized. (SDS-PAGE) analysis showed that the purified enzyme appeared as single band with a molecular weight of 75 kDa.

where transverse kink ordering results in a rotation of stripe order away from the crystal axis. Application of mild uniaxial pressure changes the ordering pattern and pins the stripe order to the crystal axis. This reordering occurs at a much weaker pressure than that to detwin the stripe domains and suggests a rather weak transverse stripe stiffness. Weak spatial stiffness and transverse quantum fluctuations are likely key prerequisites for stripes to coexist with superconductivity.

Vegetable production with grafted seedlings was originated in Japan and Korea to avoid the serious crop loss caused by infection of soil-borne diseases aggravated by successive cropping. This practice is now rapidly spreading and expanding over the world. Vegetable grafting has been safely adapted for the production of organic as well as environmentally friendly produce and minimizes uptake of undesirable agrochemical residues. The number and size of commercial vegetable seedling producers has increased markedly reflecting the increase in farmers’ preferences for grafted seedlings of high-quality and better performance. In addition to the widely recognized advantages of disease tolerance and high crop yields, grafting technology is also highly effective in ameliorating crop losses caused by adverse environmental conditions such as low soil temperature and high soil salts, especially under protected cultivations where successive cropping or continuous farming is routinely practiced. Grafted seedlings are much favored in hydroponics farming systems where the chances of rapid spread of noxious diseases, once infected, is high. Active research has been focused to develop efficient rootstocks and handy grafting tools. In addition, researchers are eager to develop grafting machines or robots to reduce the higher price of grafted seedlings. The quality of grafted transplants is extremely important to maximize high-quality crop yield. Use of grafted vegetables has increased with the increased use of improved soil mix or substrate, farmer's preferences for better seedlings, efficient management of nursery systems, lower prices of grafted seedlings, and efficient nationwide delivery and/or transportation system. Improved grafting methods to cut down the labor cost for grafting and subsequent handling of plug-grown grafted transplants will contribute further to the increased use of grafted vegetables worldwide.

The discovery of charge-density-wave-related effects in the resonant inelastic x-ray scattering spectra of cuprates holds the tantalizing promise of clarifying the interactions that stabilize the ...electronic order. Here, we report a comprehensive resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study of La2−xSrxCuO4 finding that charge-density wave effects persist up to a remarkably high doping level of x=0.21 before disappearing at x=0.25. The inelastic excitation spectra remain essentially unchanged with doping despite crossing a topological transition in the Fermi surface. This indicates that the spectra contain little or no direct coupling to electronic excitations near the Fermi surface, rather they are dominated by the resonant cross section for phonons and charge-density-wave-induced phonon softening. We interpret our results in terms of a charge-density wave that is generated by strong correlations and a phonon response that is driven by the charge-density-wave-induced modification of the lattice.

Neglected diseases caused by arenaviruses such as Lassa virus (LASV) and filoviruses like Ebola virus (EBOV) primarily afflict resource-limited countries, where antiviral drug development is often ...minimal. Previous studies have shown that many approved drugs developed for other clinical indications inhibit EBOV and LASV and that combinations of these drugs provide synergistic suppression of EBOV, often by blocking discrete steps in virus entry. We hypothesize that repurposing of combinations of orally administered approved drugs provides effective suppression of arenaviruses. In this report, we demonstrate that arbidol, an approved influenza antiviral previously shown to inhibit EBOV, LASV, and many other viruses, inhibits murine leukemia virus (MLV) reporter viruses pseudotyped with the fusion glycoproteins (GPs) of other arenaviruses (Junin virus JUNV, lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus LCMV, and Pichinde virus PICV). Arbidol and other approved drugs, including aripiprazole, amodiaquine, sertraline, and niclosamide, also inhibit infection of cells by infectious PICV, and arbidol, sertraline, and niclosamide inhibit infectious LASV. Combining arbidol with aripiprazole or sertraline results in the synergistic suppression of LASV and JUNV GP-bearing pseudoviruses. This proof-of-concept study shows that arenavirus infection
can be synergistically inhibited by combinations of approved drugs. This approach may lead to a proactive strategy with which to prepare for and control known and new arenavirus outbreaks.
Ectotherms may experience large body temperature (Tb) variations. Higher Tb have been reported to increase baroreflex sensitivity in ectotherm tetrapods. At lower Tb, pulse interval (PI) increases ...and diastolic pressure decays for longer, possibly resulting in lower end-diastolic pressures and mean arterial pressures (Pm). Additionally, compensatory baroreflex-related heart rate modulation (i.e. the cardiac branch of the baroreflex response) is delayed due to increased PI. Thus, low Tb is potentially detrimental, leading to cardiovascular malfunctioning. This raises the question on how Pm is regulated in such an adverse condition. We investigated the baroreflex compensations that enables tegu lizards, Salvator merianae, to maintain blood pressure homeostasis in a wide Tb range. Lizards had their femoral artery cannulated and pressure signals recorded at 15°C, 25°C and 35°C. We used the sequence method to analyse the heart rate baroreflex-related corrections to spontaneous pressure fluctuations at each temperature. Vascular adjustments (i.e. the peripheral branch) were assessed by calculating the time constant for arterial pressure decay (τ)-resultant from the action of both vascular resistance and compliance-by fitting the diastolic pressure descent to the two-element Windkessel equation. We observed that at lower Tb, lizards increased baroreflex gain at the operating point (Gop) and τ, indicating that the diastolic pressure decays at a slower rate. Gop normalized to Pm and PI, as well as the ratio τ/PI, did not change, indicating that both baroreflex gain and rate of pressure decay are adjusted according to PI lengthening. Consequently, pressure parameters and the oscillatory power fraction (an index of wasted cardiac energy) were unaltered by Tb, indicating that both Gop and τ modulation are crucial for cardiovascular homeostasis.
