This article takes a sociocultural linguistic approach to code switching in investigating discursive functions of shifts between Standard Japanese and a regional dialect (Iwate Dialect) in women’s ...activity-centered, naturally occurring interactions. The paper extends previous scholarship to a consideration of how shifts are used for discursive functions such as expressing or seeking alignment; provides support for taking a talk-in-interaction theoretical perspective on code switching; and articulates a basis of support for this theoretical perspective by suggesting a methodological approach that combines close analysis of stretches of talk (DA/CA) with contextual information that informs our understanding of such talk (ethnography of communication). Furthermore, the paper illustrates the intersection of gender, region, and competing language ideologies; and contributes to the lacuna of language-in-use research on dialects in Japan. Excerpts are drawn from a data set of naturally-occurring interactions compiled over two years of fieldwork in Iwate Prefecture, Japan.

We have developed the baseline design for a straw drift tube tracking system for the Solenoidal Detector Collaboration (SDC) detector. The system was designed to operate in the high-rate environment ...of the SSC. We present an overview of the tracking system and the requirements it is expected to fulfil. We describe the construction and properties of the straw drift tubes. We discuss the design of the carbon-fiber foam-laminate shell, which supports the wire tension and holds the straw in alignment. We also describe the design of the mechanical support structure, assembly procedure, and utilities. We present the performance characteristics of the prototype straw modules, read out through prototype front end electronics. The straw modules satisfy the performance criteria.

This paper addresses the paucity of research on women's language use in regional Japan by investigating Iwate Dialect (ID) and Japanese Women's Language (JWL) in face-to-face interactions among women ...in northeastern Japan. By bringing a consideration of region to bear on investigations of women's language use in Japan, the aim is to contribute to work that breaks down essentialist categories of 'the way Japanese women speak' to a more fruitful focus on the range of resources women employ in situated interactions. Analysis is based on ethnographic data and a close analysis of interactions, and focuses on speakers' use of ID and JWL as devices for negotiating roles. Findings show that JWL has limited salience for the speakers in my data set, and that ID forms are an important linguistic resource for speakers in negotiating access to high-status roles and responsibilities. Adapted from the source document.
A fully instrumented slice of the ATLAS detector was exposed to test beams from the SPS (Super Proton Synchrotron) at CERN in 2004. In this paper, the results of the measurements of the response of ...the barrel calorimeter to hadrons with energies in the range 20–350
GeV and beam impact points and angles corresponding to pseudo-rapidity values in the range 0.2–0.65 are reported. The results are compared to the predictions of a simulation program using the Geant 4 toolkit.

By bringing a consideration of region to bear on investigations of women’s language use in Japan, the aim is to contribute to work that breaks down essentialist categories of “the way Japanese women speak” to a more fruitful focus on the range of resources women employ in situated interactions. Analysis is based on ethnographic data and a close analysis of interactions, and focuses on speakers’ use of ID and JWL as devices for negotiating roles. Findings show ID is used by speakers in hesitating to take on a high-status role, and to mitigate direct challenges to claims made by other participants. JWL features are used when reiterating a point or disclaiming a role.
The differential cross section for the process $Z/\gamma^*\rightarrow ll$ ($l=e,\mu$) as a function of dilepton invariant mass is measured in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$7 TeV at the LHC using the ...ATLAS detector. The measurement is performed in the $e$ and $\mu$ channels for invariant masses between 26 GeV and 66 GeV using an integrated luminosity of 1.6 fb$^{-1}$ collected in 2011 and these measurements are combined. The analysis is extended to invariant masses as low as 12 GeV in the muon channel using 35 pb$^{-1}$ of data collected in 2010. The cross sections are determined within fiducial acceptance regions and corrections to extrapolate the measurements to the full kinematic range are provided. Next-to-next-to-leading-order QCD predictions provide a significantly better description of the results than next-to-leading-order QCD calculations, unless the latter are matched to a parton shower calculation.
The major reproductive effort of Lepidochelys kempi is restricted to a 17 km stretch of beach in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico, and most neonates begin the pelagic developmental stage of the life ...cycle here. The single point-source injection of all L. kempi hatchlings
into the sea, and distributional records of where subadults assume an inshore benthic habitat, permits an hypothetical description of the relationship between oceanographic conditions and likely dispersal paths of post-hatchlings during the year or so they are "lost" at sea. The
dispersal scenarios described may be of potential value in understanding the distributions and biogeographical limits of sea turtles in a general sense.
