Whey protein concentrate (WPC), which contains α-lactalbumin and β-lactoglobulin, is utilized widely in the food industry. The Maillard reaction is a complex reaction that produces Maillard reaction ...products (MRPs), which are associated with the formation of antioxidant compounds. In this study, the hepatoprotection activity of MRPs of WPC against oxidative stress through the nuclear factor-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2)-dependent antioxidant pathway in HepG2 cells was examined. Glucose–whey protein concentrate conjugate (Glc-WPC) was obtained from Maillard reaction between WPC and glucose. The fluorescence intensity of Glc-WPC increased after 7 d compared to native WPC, and resulted in loss of 48% of the free amino groups of WPC. The sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) patterns of Glc-WPC showed the presence of a high-molecular-weight portion. Treatment of HepG2 cells with Glc-WPC increased cell viability in the presence of oxidative stress, inhibited the generation of intracellular reactive oxygen species by tert-butyl hydroperoxide (t-BHP), and increased the glutathione level. Nrf2 translocation and Nrf2, reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NAD(P)H)-quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NOQ1), heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), glutamate-L-cysteine ligase (GCL)M and GCLC mRNA levels were increased by Glc-WPC. Also, Glc-WPC increased the phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) 1/2 and c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK). The results of this study demonstrate that Glc-WPC activates the Nrf2-dependent pathway through the phosphorylation of ERK1/2 and JNK in HepG2 cells, and induces production of antioxidant enzymes and phase II enzymes.

Background Renal infarction is a rare condition resulting from an acute disruption of renal blood flow, and the cause and outcome of renal infarction are not well established. Study Design Case ...series. Setting & Participants 438 patients with renal infarction in January 1993 to December 2013 at 9 hospitals in Korea were included. Renal infarction was defined by radiologic findings that included single or multiple wedge-shaped parenchymal perfusion defects in the kidney. Predictor Causes of renal infarction included cardiogenic (n = 244 55.7%), renal artery injury (n = 33 7.5%), hypercoagulable (n = 29 6.6%), and idiopathic (n = 132 30.1%) factors. Outcomes We used recurrence, acute kidney injury (AKI; defined as creatinine level increase ≥ 0.3 mg/dL within 48 hours or an increase to 150% of baseline level within 7 days during the sentinel hospitalization), new-onset estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2 (for >3 months after renal infarction in the absence of a history of decreased eGFR), end-stage renal disease (ESRD; receiving hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis because of irreversible kidney damage), and mortality as outcome metrics. Results Treatment included urokinase (n = 19), heparin (n = 342), warfarin (n = 330), and antiplatelet agents (n = 157). 5% of patients died during the initial hospitalization. During the median 20.0 (range, 1-223) months of follow-up, 2.8% of patients had recurrent infarction, 20.1% of patients developed AKI, 10.9% of patients developed new-onset eGFR < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2 , and 2.1% of patients progressed to ESRD. Limitations This was a retrospective study; it cannot clearly determine the specific causal mechanism for certain patients or provide information about the causes of mortality. 16 patients were excluded from the prognostic analysis. Conclusions Cardiogenic origins were the most important causes of renal infarction. Despite aggressive treatment, renal infarction can lead to AKI, new-onset eGFR < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2 , ESRD, and death.
Adhesion is a primary challenge following surgery, and the anti-adhesive effect of methylene blue (MB) has been investigated. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effect of ...MB on postoperative adhesions in experimental studies. We initially searched OVID-MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Google Scholar in February 2021, and then in May 2021. The anti-adhesive efficacy of MB was compared with that of the control (either placebo or nothing) after the surgical procedure. The primary and secondary outcomes were the macroscopic and microscopic adhesion scores, respectively. Traditional meta-analysis, meta-regression, and trial sequential analysis (TSA) were performed to analyze the retrieved outcomes. We included 13 experimental studies of 367 rats (200 rats received MB and 167 rats received placebo or nothing). The macroscopic adhesion scores were significantly lower in the MB-administered group than in the control group (standardized mean difference, 2.313; 95% confidence interval, 1.104 to3.523; I2 = 94.0%, Tau = 2.059). Meta-regression analysis showed that macroscopic adhesion tended to decrease with an increase in MB dose. TSA demonstrated that the cumulative Z curve crossed both the conventional test and trial sequential monitoring boundary for the macroscopic adhesion score. MB had a beneficial effect on intraperitoneal adhesion following laparotomy, and adhesions decreased with increase in dose.

Recently, exciton polaritons in a semiconductor microcavity were found to condense into a coherent ground state much like a Bose-Einstein condensate and a superfluid. They have become a unique ...testbed for generating and manipulating quantum vortices in a driven-dissipative superfluid. Here, we generate an exciton-polariton condensate with a nonresonant Laguerre-Gaussian optical beam and verify the direct transfer of light's orbital angular momentum to an exciton-polariton quantum fluid. Quantized vortices are found in spite of the large energy relaxation involved in nonresonant pumping. We identified phase singularity, density distribution, and energy eigenstates for the vortex states. Our observations confirm that nonresonant optical Laguerre-Gaussian beam can be used to manipulate chirality, topological charge, and stability of the nonequilibrium quantum fluid. These vortices are quite robust, only sensitive to the orbital angular momentum of light and not other parameters such as energy, intensity, size, or shape of the pump beam. Therefore, optical information can be transferred between the photon and exciton-polariton with ease and the technique is potentially useful to form the controllable network of multiple topological charges even in the presence of spectral randomness in a solid state system.

This study was performed to verify the influence of scanning-aid materials on the accuracy and time efficiency of full-arch scanning with intraoral scanners. The full-arch reference model was ...constructed by a 3D printer and scanned with a model scanner to obtain the reference dataset. Four experimental groups (application of ScanCure (SC-80, ODS Co, Incheon, Korea), IP Scan Spray (IP-Division, Haimhausen, Germany) and Vita Powder Scan Spray (Vita Zahnfabrik, Stuttgart, Germany), and no treatment) were designed, and the scans were executed (trueness, n = 5) using two intraoral scanners: I500 (Medit Co., Seoul, Korea) and TRIOS (3shape, Copenhagen, Denmark). All acquired scan data were compared with the reference datasets using the 3D superimposition method and 2D linear measurements. In the 3D analysis, intragroup data were compared with each other (precision, n = 10). Time efficiency was also verified by comparing the scan times of the four experimental groups. In the 3D analysis, the root mean square (RMS) value of the precision of the scanned image was statistically significantly more accurate in the scanning-aid agent-treated groups than in the no-treatment group
< 0.05). However, the RMS values of trueness and the types of scanning-aid materials were not significantly different. In the 2D measurements, the increased scan distance generated a greater distance deviation. The working time was significantly shorter in the scanning-aid agent groups than in the no-treatment group, with statistical significance (
< 0.05). Therefore, in clinical situations, the application of scanning-aid materials is recommended to reduce scanning time and more efficiently obtain the full-arch scanned image.

Licochalcone H (LCH) is a chemical compound that is a positional isomer of licochalcone C (LCC), a chalconoid isolated from the root of Glycyrrhiza inflata, which has various pharmacological ...properties including anti‑inflammatory, antioxidant, antitumor, and anticancer effects. However, the efficacy of LCH on cancer cells has not been investigated. The present study examined the effects of LCH on cell proliferation, induction of apoptosis, and the regulation of matrin 3 (Matr3) protein in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) cells by Annexin V/propidium iodide (PI) staining and western blot analysis. LCH reduced cell viability and colony forming ability, and induced cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in HSC2 and HSC3 cells through the suppression of Matr3. It was also found that LCH directly bound to Matr3 in a Sepharose 4B pull‑down assay. Consequently, the results of the present study suggest that LCH may be used as an anticancer drug in combination with conventional chemotherapy for the treatment of OSCC, and that Matr3 may be a potential effective therapeutic target.
The advent of intraoral scanning methods has caused a paradigm shift in dentistry. However, despite their many advantages, intraoral scanners cannot accurately recognize the metallic surfaces of ...prothesis. Therefore, this experiment was designed to verify the effect of scanning-aid agents on the scanning accuracy using metallic reference models. Three different types of metallic reference models (inlay, onlay, and bridge) were specially designed and produced using a milling machine to simulate intraoral dental restorations. Three experimental groups (application of ScanCure, IP Scan Spray, and VITA Powder Scan Spray) were set up and scanned images (each n = 5) were acquired using the I500® intraoral scanner. The reference datasets were established by a 3D design that reflected the deviations between the measured distances and previously planned distances on the reference models. All acquired experimental datasets were digitally superimposed and compared with the reference datasets. Intragroup comparisons (precision, n = 10) were also performed. The root mean square (RMS) values of trueness in the ScanCure and IP groups were significantly more accurate than those of the VITA group in the inlay and onlay reference models (p < 0.05). Notably, in the bridge reference model, the liquid-type ScanCure group showed the highest accuracy of trueness, with statistical significance (p < 0.05). However, the RMS values of precision were not significantly different among the groups. These findings suggest that liquid-type scanning agents can be effectively used to obtain more accurate scan images of intraoral metallic dental restorations.

The white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) is the causative agent of white spot disease, which kills shrimp within a few days of infection. Although WSSV has a mortality rate of almost 100% and poses a ...serious threat to the shrimp farming industry, strategies for its prevention and treatment are extremely limited. In this study, we examined the efficacy of VP28, a recombinant WSSV protein expressed in Chlorella vulgaris (C. vulgaris), as an oral shrimp vaccine. When compared with the control group, in which WSSV had a cumulative mortality of 100%, shrimp treated with 5% VP28-expressing C. vulgaris in their feed only had a 20% cumulative mortality rate 12 days after the WSSV challenge. When compared with the nonvaccinated group, the transcription of anti-lipopolysaccharide factor, C-type lectin, and prophenoloxidase genes, which are involved in shrimp defense against WSSV infection, was upregulated 29.6 fold, 15.4 fold, and 11.5 fold, respectively. These findings highlight C. vulgaris as a potential host for industrial shrimp vaccine production.

MXenes based on titanium carbide are promising next-generation transparent electrode materials due to their high metallic conductivity, optical transparency, mechanical flexibility, and abundant ...hydrophilic surface functionality. MXene electrodes offer a much wider conductive surface coverage than metal nanowires, thereby gaining popularity as flexible electrode materials in supercapacitors and energy devices. However, given that monolayer MXene nanosheets are only a few nanometers thick, meticulous surface treatments and deposition technologies are required for a practical implementation of these transparent electrodes. Unfortunately, a capacitor produced by forming high-quality transparent MXene electrodes on both sides of a film has not yet been reported. We report the successful development of a one-way continuous deposition technology to form high-quality MXene nanosheet-based transparent electrodes on both surfaces of a polymer film without large physical stresses on the MXene nanosheets. One transparent electrode was formed by transferring MXene nanosheets predeposited on a temporary glass substrate to the film surface, while the other was directly deposited on the exposed film surface. The Ti3AlC2 precursor (MAX) was synthesized via a spark plasma sintering crystallization, and the MXene nanosheets were prepared via a subsequent Al-selective etching and delamination. We used this material to implement a capacitive photodetector consisting of two layers of opposing transparent electrodes. The flexible photodetector was based on poly(vinyl butyral) (PVB), which was solidly bonded with MXene nanosheets to serve as a free-standing binder for the Cu-doped ZnS semiconductor particles. The fabricated device exhibited excellent mechanical stability due to the high affinity between the MXene nanosheets and PVB. Furthermore, the device exhibited an initial capacitance of 2 nF, photosensitivity of 12.5 μF/W, and rise and decay times of 0.031 and 0.751 s, respectively. All these parameters were 1 to 2 orders of magnitude higher or faster than reported capacitive photodetectors. Overall, the proposed approach resolves the core issues associated with existing metal nanowire-based electrodes, and it is a breakthrough in the development of next-generation flexible devices comprising two layers of confronting transparent electrodes.
