We prepared a homologous series of achiral liquid crystal trimers (I-n) in which two phenylpyrimidine units and one biphenyl unit were connected via flexible spacers, and investigated the physical ...properties. All the trimers possessing odd-numbered methylene spacers exhibited soft crystalline chiral conglomerate phases. X-ray diffraction measurements reveal that they have an intercalated layer structure. On the other hand, the trimers possessing even-numbered spacers showed nematic and smectic C phases. We investigated the surface structures of odd-membered trimers in the soft crystalline phases using scanning electron microscopy. Trimers I-3 and I-5 were found to form cylindrical tubes, whereas trimers I-7, I-9 and I-11 toroidal pits. We discuss the formation of diverse supramolecular architectures in terms of the anisotropy of the chirality transfer.

Achiral linear trimers possessing odd-numbered spacers exhibited soft crystalline chiral conglomerate phases. The trimers with shorter spacers were found to form cylindrical tubes, whereas those with longer spacers toroidal pits.
This study investigated the atmospheric and oceanic contributions to the genesis of Typhoon Faxai in 2019. Our statistical analysis using the tropical cyclone genesis score (TGS) attributed the ...tropical disturbance that developed into Faxai (Pre-Faxai) to easterly waves (EWs). The EW score evaluated by a grid version of the TGS (Grid-EW) averaged around the occurrence of Pre-Faxai was approximately twice as large as the climatological mean, and it was the second largest value in the past 38 years. The Pre-Faxai area with high Grid-EW scores could be traced back to the eastern North Pacific (ENP) around August 25, 2019. The lower-troposphere environment characterized by high Grid-EW scores was favorable for vortex formation because it provided a containment area for moisture entrained by the developing circulation or lofted by the deep convection therein. The Pre-Faxai area with high Grid-EW scores moved westward due to the background easterly flow over the ENP and then entered the western North Pacific (WNP). The Typhoon Intensity Forecast Scheme (TIFS) showed that the important environments for its genesis were ocean conditions and the vertical wind shear. The oceanic conditions contributed to the development of Pre-Faxai as it traveled over the WNP. The enhancement of vertical wind shear and subsequent suppression of the development of Pre-Faxai were caused by the lower-troposphere easterly winds associated with high EW scores. They were also caused by upper-troposphere westerly winds associated with an upper cold low northwest of Pre-Faxai. When the vertical shear decreased with weakening of the upper cold low, Pre-Faxai reached tropical storm intensity on September 4. Therefore, TGS and TIFS detected Pre-Faxai 10 days before the typhoon arose, which indicates that monitoring environmental factors such as EW and vertical wind shear are important for disaster prevention.
Projectors require a zoom function. This function is generally realized using a zoom lens module composed of many lenses and mechanical parts; however, using a zoom lens module increases the system ...size and cost, and requires manual operation of the module. Holographic projection is an attractive technique because it inherently requires no lenses, reconstructs images with high contrast and reconstructs color images with one spatial light modulator. In this paper, we demonstrate a lensless zoomable holographic projection. Without using a zoom lens module, this holographic projection realizes the zoom function using a numerical method, called scaled Fresnel diffraction which can calculate diffraction at different sampling rates on a projected image and hologram.
We propose a random phase-free kinoform for large objects. When not using the random phase in kinoform calculation, the reconstructed images from the kinoform are heavy degraded, like edge-only ...preserved images. In addition, the kinoform cannot record an entire object that exceeds the kinoform size because the object light does not widely spread. In order to avoid this degradation and to widely spread the object light, the random phase is applied to the kinoform calculation; however, the reconstructed image is contaminated by speckle noise. In this paper, we overcome this problem by using our random phase-free method and error diffusion method.
Abstract
In patients with various cancers, modified Glasgow prognostic score (mGPS) before treatment has predicted prognoses after antitumor therapy. This study aimed to assess whether pretreatment ...mGPS also has predictive value in patients with muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) after radiotherapy. A retrospective review accumulated 98 consecutive MIBC patients treated with definitive 3D-conformal radiotherapy from January 2011 to December 2016 in a single center. It included cT2-4bN0-3M0 patients with a median age of 79 years (range: 49 to 95 years). Radiotherapy was delivered at 60–66 Gy for bladder cancer. Patients were categorized in terms of their pretreatment serum albumin and C-reactive protein (CRP) values as mGPS_0, mGPS_1, and mGPS_2. Among them, cumulative overall survival (OS) rates were compared by Kaplan–Meier plots with log-rank tests. The number of patients with mGPS_0, mGPS_1, and mGPS_2 were 40, 40, and 18, respectively. The median follow-up time for all patients was 19 months (range: 2–73 months). The 2-year OS rate for all patients was 75.7%. The 2-year OS rates for mGPS_0, mGPS_1, and mGPS_2 were 85.1%, 71.3%, and 60.9%, respectively. Kaplan–Meier curves revealed a significantly higher cumulative OS rate for mGPS_0 compared with mGPS_1 and mGPS_2 (P = 0.003). Using multivariate Cox regression analysis, mGPS_0 and good performance status were associated with favorable OS rates, of which mGPS_0 was more significant (Hazard ratio 2.74, 95% CI 1.30–5.57, P = 0.008). Modified Glasgow prognostic score may be a novel biomarker that can predict survival in patients with MIBC after radiotherapy.
