We present a method for interpreting seismic records with arrivals and waveforms having characteristics which could be generated by extremely inhomogeneous velocity structures, such as non-typical ...oceanic crust, decollement at subduction zones, and seamounts in oceanic regions, by comparing them with synthetic waveforms. Recent extensive refraction and wide-angle reflection surveys in oceanic regions have provided us with a huge number of high-resolution and high-quality seismic records containing characteristic arrivals and waveforms, besides first arrivals and major reflected phases such as PmP. Some characteristic waveforms, with significant later reflected phases or anomalous amplitude decay with offset distance, are difficult to interpret using only a conventional interpretation method such as the traveltime tomographic inversion method. We find the best process for investigating such characteristic phases is to use an interactive interpretation method to compare observed data with synthetic waveforms, and calculate raypaths and traveltimes. This approach enables us to construct a reasonable structural model that includes all of the major characteristics of the observed waveforms. We present results here with some actual observed examples that might be of great help in the interpretation of such problematic phases. Our approach to the analysis of waveform characteristics is endorsed as an innovative method for constructing high-resolution and high-quality crustal structure models, not only in oceanic regions, but also in the continental regions.
Scalar diffraction calculations such as the angular spectrum method (ASM) and Fresnel diffraction, are widely used in the research fields of optics, X-rays, electron beams, and ultrasonics. It is ...possible to accelerate the calculation using fast Fourier transform (FFT); unfortunately, acceleration of the calculation of non-uniform sampled planes is limited due to the property of the FFT that imposes uniform sampling. In addition, it gives rise to wasteful sampling data if we calculate a plane having locally low and high spatial frequencies. In this paper, we developed non-uniform sampled ASM and Fresnel diffraction to improve the problem using the non-uniform FFT.
We report a calculation reduction method for color computer-generated holograms (CGHs) using color space conversion. Color CGHs are generally calculated on RGB space. In this paper, we calculate ...color CGHs in other color spaces: for example, YCbCr color space. In YCbCr color space, a RGB image is converted to the luminance component (Y), blue-difference chroma (Cb) and red-difference chroma (Cr) components. In terms of the human eye, although the negligible difference of the luminance component is well-recognized, the difference of the other components is not. In this method, the luminance component is normal sampled and the chroma components are down-sampled. The down-sampling allows us to accelerate the calculation of the color CGHs. We compute diffraction calculations from the components, and then we convert the diffracted results in YCbCr color space to RGB color space.
Our proposed method of random phase-free holography using virtual convergence light can obtain large reconstructed images exceeding the size of the hologram, without the assistance of random phase. ...The reconstructed images have low-speckle noise in the amplitude and phase-only holograms (kinoforms); however, in low-resolution holograms, we obtain a degraded image quality compared to the original image. We propose an iterative random phase-free method with virtual convergence light to address this problem.
We demonstrate a gigapixel inline digital holographic microscopy using a consumer scanner. The consumer scanner can maximally scan an A4 size image (297mm x 210mm) with 4800 dpi (= 5.29 um), ...theoretically achieving a resolution of 56,144 x 39,698 = 2.22 gigapixels. The system using a consumer scanner has a simple structure, compared with synthetic aperture digital holography using a camera mounted on a two-dimensional moving stage. In this demonstration, we captured an inline hologram with 23,602 x 18,023 pixels (= 0.43 gigapixels). In addition, to accelerate the reconstruction time of the gigapixel hologram and decrease the amount of memory for the reconstruction, we applied the band-limited double-step Fresnel diffraction to the reconstruction.

Concurrent Endometrial Hyperplasia with Carcinoma of the Corpus Uteri. ...Tohoku J. exp. Med., 1985, 145 (1), 15-22-Using 117 uteri which were extirpated in cases of carcinoma of the corpus uteri, a study was made to investigate the relationship between the site of the cancer and the site of associated endometrial hyperplasia. It was found that 75% of the cases had carcinomas of the upper portion of the uterus primarily of the uterine fundus. About 50% of the cancers were associated with adenomatous or atypical hyperplasia, and these two types of hyperplasia were frequently found in the fundus or upper portion of the uterus. In contrast, there was no site of particular prevalence in cases with concurrent cystic hyperplasia. About 70% of the cases had adenomatous or atypical hyperplasia on one or both of the histological blocks adjacent to the cancer.
The concentration of cytoplasmic estrogen receptors (ER) in cancer of the uterine cervix was measured in 30 cases (28 squamous cell carcinomas and 2 adenocarcinomas). The mean ER concentration in ...squamous cell carcinoma was 19.3 +/- 26.0 fmol/mg cytosol protein; for pre- and postmenopausal women 6.82 +/- 9.86 and 28.6 +/- 30.1 fmol/mg protein, respectively, were found, the latter being significantly higher. When 'ER-positive' was defined as concentrations greater than 10 fmol/mg protein, 12 of the 28 cases (43%) were found to be ER-positive. There were no significant differences between the ER concentrations of clinical stage I and II squamous cell carcinomas (19.2 +/- 24.2 and 20.9 +/- 27.2 fmol/mg, respectively). ER were detectable in the cervical tissue from all of the control cases of myoma of the uterus. There were, however, no differences in the ER content between the proliferative and secretory phases, but the concentration in premenopausal women was significantly lower than that in postmenopausal women. In comparison with the controls, the mean ER level in both pre- and postmenopausal women with squamous cell carcinoma was significantly lower, due to the fact that ER were not detectable in 57% of these cases. Both cases of cervical adenocarcinoma were ER-positive.
