This article analyses how Finnish hegemonic nationalism was contested by peace movements in Finland from 1919 to 1932. First and foremost, Finnish peace movements contested hegemonic ...Lutheran‐patriotic discourses, which they perceived to have been maintained especially by the Lutheran Church of Finland. Thus, hegemonic Lutheran‐patriotic discourses were contested by peace movements through three church‐related discursive contexts: (1) biblical‐doctrinal interpretations, (2) Christian revivalism and (3) churches' peace ecumenism. Results of this article imply that contesting happened especially through religious discourses, which considered a nationalist state church idolatrous. Peace activists depicted themselves as true Christians and patriots, arguing that peace ecumenical cooperation with them and other churches enabled state churches to renounce hegemonic nationalism. Based on these results, I suggest that when hegemonic nationalism is intertwined strongly with Christianity and the state church, nationalism is challenged through questioning its alleged Christian basis.

In this article, I will ask, how the international networks of peace movements have influenced the development of Quaker pacifism in Fenno‐Scandinavia. The question is answered with qualitative ...social network analysis when analyzing the vocational development of two Quaker network nodes, Greta Langenskjöld (1889–1975) and Deryck Sivén (1913–2002). Based on the analysis, I argue that the International Fellowship of Reconciliation provided the most important transnational social network to introduce Quakerism to Fenno‐Scandinavia. Before this, Evangelicalism, Tolstoian Christian anarchism, and Theosophist socialism had molded the ground fitting for the Quaker‐Socialist networks of the IFOR.

Tässä artikkelissa selvitän ...Pohjoismaisten opettajien rauhanliittoon osallistuneiden suomalaisten opettajien toimintaa ja pedagogista ajattelua. Selvitän, miten liiton suomalaiset opettajat näkivät nationalismin ja kansainvälisyyden suhteen heidän rauhankasvatuksellisissa näkemyksissään 1920-luvulla. Lisäksi vastaan siihen, minkälaisen vastaanoton Pohjoismaisten opettajien rauhanliitto sai Suomessa. Arvioin, miten kasvava nationalismin suosio vaikutti liitossa toimineiden suomalaisten opettajien ajatteluun. Tutkimalla liitossa vaikuttaneiden opettajien ajattelua diskurssianalyysilla ja toimintaa kvalitatiivisella verkostoanalyysilla osoitan, että opettajat kyseenalaistivat nationalismin valta-asemaa koulujärjestelmässä verkostoitumalla muiden Pohjoismaiden opettajien kanssa. Lisäksi he loivat tulkintakehikon, jossa nationalismin ja kansainvälisyyden nähtiin tukevan toisiaan. Siten he tarjosivat suomalaiselle koulujärjestelmälle keinon integroida rauhankasvatus kansallismieliseen kouluopetukseen. Kansainliittoon liittyvän tiedon lisääminen kouluissa muodostui vuonna 1931 perustetun Suomen opettajien rauhanliiton keskeiseksi tavoitteeksi. Siihen liitto sai tukea kouluhallituksen edustajilta ja vähiten kritiikkiä kansallismielisiltä.

wurde als »Bewegung zur Bildung einer christlichen Internationalen«
bezeichnet. Die ...historische Forschung über die Gründung der Bewegung hat sie meist irreführend als »Internationaler Versöhnungsbund« bezeichnet, was in Wirklichkeit
erst seit 1923 zum Namen der Bewegung wurde. Dieser Anachronismus ist bedauerlich,
denn er berücksichtigt nicht die wesentlichen historischen Zusammenhänge, die
die Gründung, die Prinzipien und den Namen der »Christlichen Internationalen« im
Jahre 1919 beeinflussten.
In diesem Artikel werden der Name und die erste Erklärung der Christlichen Internationalen
mit Hilfe der »Frage-und-Antwort-Logik« analysiert, in der jede Idee
und Handlung in der Geschichte als Antwort auf eine Frage betrachtet wird, die sich
aus dem historischen Kontext einer bestimmten Zeit und eines bestimmten Ortes ergibt.
Aufgrund dieses methodologischen Ansatzes werden drei kritische historische
Kontexte dargestellt, die die Entstehung und die Prinzipien der Bewegung für eine
»Christliche Internationale« beeinflusst haben. Der erste Kontext ist die internationale
Konferenz des »Weltbundes für Freundschaftsarbeit der Kirchen« in Den Haag 1919.
Der zweite Kontext ist die bolschewistische Revolution in Russland und die Bildung
der Komintern. Der dritte Kontext ist der paradigmatische Wandel innerhalb der Friedensbewegungen.
Aus diesen historischen Kontexten ergab sich eine Reihe von Fragen,
die durch die Bildung der Christlichen Internationale beantwortet werden sollten, aus
der sich später der Internationale Versöhnungsbund entwickelte.
Summary
The predecessor of the ecumenical peace organization, International Fellowship of
Reconciliation, was called a »Movement towards Christian international«. The historical
research concerning the establishment of the movement has most often named it
misleadingly as the »International Fellowship of Reconciliation«, which in reality was
not the name of the movement until 1923. This anachronism is unfortunate because it
dismisses the essential historical contexts that affected the formation, the principles,
and the name of the Christian international in 1919.
In this article, the name and first declaration of the Christian international will be
analyzed with the question-and-answer-logic, in which every idea and action in history
is seen as an answer to some question, which raises from the historical context of a particular
time and place. With this methodological standpoint, three critical historical
contexts that affected the formation and principles of the Movement towards a Christian
International will be represented. The first context is the international conference
of the World Alliance in Haag 1919. The second context is the Bolshevist revolution
in Russia and the formation of the Comintern. The third context is the paradigmatic
change inside the peace movements. These historical contexts gave birth to a series of
questions that were tried to be answered through the formation of the Christian international,
which later developed into the International Fellowship of Reconciliation.
