The molecular structure of the type 1 human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) is tightly linked to the mechanism of viral entry. The spike envelope (Env) glycoproteins and their interaction with the ...underlying matrix (MA) shell have emerged as key components of the entry mechanism. Microscopy evidence suggests that the MA shell does not span the entire inner lipid surface of the virus, producing a region of the virus that completely lacks an MA shell. Interestingly, evidence also suggests that Env proteins cluster during viral maturation and, thus, it is likely that this event takes place in the region of the virus that lacks an MA shell. We have previously called this part of the virus a fusion hub to highlight its importance during viral entry. While the structure of the MA shell is in contention due to the unaddressed inconsistencies between its reported hexagonal arrangement and the physical plausibility of such a structure, it is possible that a limited number of MA hexagons could form. In this study, we measured the size of the fusion hub by analysing the cryo-EM maps of eight HIV-1 particles and measured the size of the MA shell gap to be 66.3 nm ± 15.0 nm. We also validated the feasibility of the hexagonal MA shell arrangement in six reported structures and determined the plausible components of these structures that do not violate geometrical limitations. We also examined the cytosolic domain of Env proteins and discovered a possible interaction between adjacent Env proteins that could explain the stability of cluster formation. We present an updated HIV-1 model and postulate novel roles of the MA shell and Env structure.

Abstract Background Comorbidity of major depression with substance abuse increases the risk of committing suicide. The objective of this work was to determine the psychological and socio-demographic ...factors associated with depression and suicide attempts in patients rehabilitating for drug consumption. Method 57 Patients attending a center for drug abuse treatment answered the following instruments: the Mini-international neuropsychiatric interview, a questionnaire of general information and background data on consumption of substances, depression and suicide attempts, and the Spanish adaptation of the Holmes and Rahe scale for the assessment of life events. Chi-square and logistic regression tests were used to establish associations between variables. Results 68.4% of the Patients had current major depression, of these, 75.4% experienced it before the onset of substance abuse. Patients attempting suicide before drug use corresponded to 26%, whilst 28.1% attempted suicide within the last year. Current depression-related variables were receiving a diagnosis of depression prior to the consumption of drugs and the first used drugs, which were alcohol or marijuana. The adverse life event “Familial drug abuse history”, was also significantly related to depression ( p =0.02). Variables associated with current suicide attempts were: receiving a diagnosis of depression prior to the consumption of drugs ( p =0.02), and suicide attempts previous to drug use ( p <0.003). Limitation A limitation of this study was the small size of the sample. Conclusion Patients with depression who attempted suicide prior to the use of drugs also experienced these conditions during the rehabilitation process. Substance use in the family was a risk factor for both, underscoring the need of actions aimed at preventing addictions in the household environment.

Similarities between the Atacama Desert (Chile) and Mars include extreme aridity, highly oxidizing chemistry, and intense ultraviolet radiation that promoted the photochemical production of ...perchlorates and nitrates. Concentration of these ions under hyperarid conditions led to the formation of nitrate‐ and perchlorate‐bearing deposits in ephemeral lakes, followed by later deposition of chlorides and sulfates. At some locations, such as the Salar Grande, hypersaline deposits have remained unaltered for millions of years. We conducted a drilling campaign in deposits of the Salar to characterize the preservation state of biological molecules. A 5 m deep discontinuous core was recovered and subjected to multitechnique analysis including the antibody microarray‐based biosensor LDChip300 and the SOLID (Signs Of Life Detector) instrument, complemented by geophysical, mineralogical, geochemical, and molecular analysis. We identified two units based on the mineralogy: the upper one, from the surface to ~320 cm depth characterized by a predominance of halite and anhydrite, and the lower one, from 320 to 520 cm, with a drop in halite and anhydrite and an enrichment in nitrate and perchlorate. Organic compounds including biomolecules were detected in association with the different depositional and mineralogical units, demonstrating the high capacity for molecular preservation. Hypersaline environments preserve biomolecules over geologically significant timescales; therefore, salt‐bearing materials should be high‐priority targets for the search for evidence of life on Mars.

Objective
As in other health sciences, a career in dentistry is associated with numerous stressors in practitioners. The main objective of this research was to examine the prevalence of emotional ...exhaustion, burnout, and perceived stress among dental students in Mexico.
Methods
A cross-sectional study was conducted among 73 dental students attending a private university in Northern Mexico. Three scales were administered to students to identify emotional exhaustion, burnout, and perceived stress, and parametric data analysis was performed.
Results
Among participants (mean age 19.7 years), the proportion with emotional exhaustion, perceived high stress, and burnout was 52.0%, 42.3%, and 17.8%, respectively. All students with perceived stress also had burnout.
Conclusions
We found that emotional exhaustion and perceived stress are experienced by a large proportion of dentistry students enrolled in the third semester at this private university in Northern Mexico. The proportions were independent of age and sex.
The complete repair of the mucosa constitutes a key goal in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) treatment. The Wnt signaling pathway mediates mucosal repair and M2 macrophages that coordinate efficient ...healing have been related to Wnt ligand expression. Signal transducer and activator of transcription 6 (STAT6) mediates M2 polarization in vitro and we hypothesize that a STAT6-dependent macrophage phenotype mediates mucosal repair in acute murine colitis by activating the Wnt signaling pathway. Our results reveal an impaired mucosal expression of M2 macrophage-associated genes and delayed wound healing in STAT6(-/-) mice treated with 2,4,6-trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid (TNBS). These mice also exhibited decreased mucosal expression of Wnt2b, Wnt7b, and Wnt10a, diminished protein levels of nuclear β-catenin that is mainly located in crypts adjacent to damage, and reduced mRNA expression of two Wnt/β-catenin target molecules Lgr5 and c-Myc when compared with wild-type (WT) mice. Murine peritoneal macrophages treated with interleukin-4 (IL-4) and polarized toward an M2a phenotype overexpressed Wnt2b, Wnt7b, and Wnt10a in a STAT6-dependent manner. Administration of a Wnt agonist as well as transfer of properly polarized M2a macrophages to STAT6(-/-) mice activated the Wnt signaling pathway in the damaged mucosa and accelerated wound healing. Our results demonstrate that a STAT6-dependent macrophage phenotype promotes mucosal repair in TNBS-treated mice through activation of the Wnt signaling pathway.

Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites have gained increasing recognition and application in the field of civil engineering in recent decades due to their notable mechanical properties and ...chemical resistance. However, FRP composites may also be affected by harsh environmental conditions (e.g., water, alkaline solutions, saline solutions, elevated temperature) and exhibit mechanical phenomena (e.g., creep rupture, fatigue, shrinkage) that could affect the performance of the FRP reinforced/strengthened concrete (FRP-RSC) elements. This paper presents the current state-of-the-art on the key environmental and mechanical conditions affecting the durability and mechanical properties of the main FRP composites used in reinforced concrete (RC) structures (i.e., Glass/vinyl-ester FRP bars and Carbon/epoxy FRP fabrics for internal and external application, respectively). The most likely sources and their effects on the physical/mechanical properties of FRP composites are highlighted herein. In general, no more than 20% tensile strength was reported in the literature for the different exposures without combined effects. Additionally, some provisions for the serviceability design of FRP-RSC elements (e.g., environmental factors, creep reduction factor) are examined and commented upon to understand the implications of the durability and mechanical properties. Furthermore, the differences in serviceability criteria for FRP and steel RC elements are highlighted. Through familiarity with their behavior and effects on enhancing the long-term performance of RSC elements, it is expected that the results of this study will help in the proper use of FRP materials for concrete structures.

The practical efficacy of technologically promising metals for use in ultraviolet plasmonics (3–6 eV) is assessed by an exhaustive numerical analysis. This begins with estimates of the near- and ...far-field electromagnetic enhancement factors of isolated hemispherical and spherical metallic nanoparticles deposited on typical dielectric substrates like sapphire, from which the potential of each metal for plasmonic applications may be ascertained. The ultraviolet plasmonic behavior of aluminum, chromium, copper, gallium, indium, magnesium, palladium, platinum, rhodium, ruthenium, titanium, and tungsten was compared with the well-known behavior of gold and silver in the visible. After exploring this behavior for each metal as a function of nanoparticle shape and size, the deleterious effect caused by the metal’s native oxide is considered, and the potential for applications such as surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, accelerated photodegradation and photocatalysis is addressed.

We eliminated loss mechanisms present in previous trap experiments by levitating polarized ultracold neutrons above the surface of an asymmetric storage trap using a repulsive magnetic field gradient so that the stored neutrons do not interact with material trap walls. As a result of this approach and the use of an in situ neutron detector, the lifetime reported here 877.7 ± 0.7 (stat) +0.4/-0.2 (sys) seconds does not require corrections larger than the quoted uncertainties.

The presence of extensive phyllosilicate deposits from the early Noachian of Mars are often interpreted as having formed from neutral to subalkaline solutions. In this paper we examine the Río Tinto ...fluvial basin, an early Mars analog, that hosts clay production and sedimentation along the entire course of the river. At Río Tinto, phyllosilicate minerals including clays and micas are sourced by volcanosedimentary bedrock of rhyolitic and andesitic composition affected by Carboniferous hydrothermal alteration. Pleistocene to modern acidic weathering of those materials chemically altered the volcanic and sedimentary materials to K/Na–clay–(montmorillonite/smectites)–kaolinite assemblages in paleosoils and fractures while physical weathering degrades phyllosilicates more resistant to acidic attack. During the wet season, phyllosilicates are eroded, transported and deposited from both acidic headwaters and neutral tributaries. During the dry season, sulfates and nanophase oxyhydroxides co-precipitate. Late summer storms that cause fast flooding events mix illite, quartz, feldspars, iron oxides and other minerals in fluvial deposits where these minerals are stabilized and aggrade until the following wet season. As a result, chemical precipitates, primary phyllosilicates and secondary clays form mineral admixtures that explain the compositional diversity of the fluvial deposits. These deposits reveal the persistence of smectites, whose occurrence is explained given that the reaction kinetics under acidic conditions of degradation is lowered by seasonal discharges of the river. The longevity of phyllosilicate minerals within fluvial deposits depends on climatic and geochemical conditions and processes which are in turn are correlated to temperature, persistence of water, hydrological cycling, hydrogeochemistry and composition of the source materials in the basement. These parameters are universal and have to be characterized in order to understand the distribution of mineral composition on any planetary surface, including Mars.

Coral reef ecosystems are under stress of different origins, from factors including sedimentation, fragmentation, overfishing, and tourism, depending on their geographical location, depth, and ...proximity to recreation areas. In this study of Juluapan Lagoon, we examined the relationship between various water-quality attributes and the status indicators of the coral community at La Boquita reef. During 2011 (12 months of sampling), six monitoring stations in the Juluapan lagoon were established in order to observe the gradient of the distribution of the physicochemical parameters: three stations on the upper part, or BI, (S4 to S6) and three more in the lower part, or BII, (S1 to S3). A control station (CS) was located in the coral reef close to the lagoon channel, and where dissolved inorganic nutrients and cellular carbon content were determined. Additionally, we considered the monitoring of three of the eight largest coral structures/headlands of this community: the first was the station closest to the channel communicating with Juluapan lagoon (C1), the second was in the intermediate region with respect to that lagoon (C2), and the third was farthest from the channel (C3). Three line intercept transects (LIT) 30 m in length and perpendicular to the coast provenance were established in each station, and the parameters indicative of the status of corals were evaluated in an area of 60 m2 on each transect (180 m2 by the station). Turbidity, evidence of fishing, signs of settling, algal coverage, abundance of fish, rate of sediment, and coral health records (as for CoralWach chart) were determined in situ and from digital photographs and videos. Considering various community status indicators used in the reef area, we could recognize a state of general deterioration, which was reflected in the loss of 17 % of coral coverage. The main anthropogenic disturbances in adjacent areas to La Boquita reef included wastewater discharges into the lagoon, tourist developments in the coastal zone, deforestation and erosion resulting from inappropriate development, and the runoff of nutrients from agricultural lands nearby the lagoon. All these significantly contributed to the nutrient-enriched waters of the lagoon, especially in summer, with negative effects on the coral community. Continued exposure to these factors, coupled with the lack of control over other anthropogenic components, has promoted the maintenance of a chronic stress state in the studied coral community. Our findings highlight the need for the development of appropriate coastal management and conservation policies for the coral reefs of the Mexican Pacific Coast.
