Bisphenol-A diglycidyl ether (BADGE) is used as an additive or starting agent in coatings for cans. The presence of hydrochloric acid in the organosol (PVC-based) lacquers results in formation of ...chlorohydroxy compounds of BADGE. These compounds, as well as BADGE itself, are potential migrants into the preserved food and are of toxicological concern. In the present investigation the presence of BADGE and the chlorohydroxy compounds (BADGE.HCl and BADGE.2HCl) in various kinds of canned foods from 30 brands have been determined by HPLC with fluorescence detection. BADGE was found in levels up to 5.1mg/kg in the food and only in food from cans containing BADGE.HCl and BADGE.2HCl in the lacquers. BADGE was found both in fish in oil and in fish in tomato sauce, however, the highest amounts were found in the fatty foodstuffs. BADGE.HCl and BADGE.2HCl were found in concentrations up to 2.4mg/kg and 8.3mg/kg, respectively. Unlike BADGE, BADGE.2HCl was found in similar concentrations in fish in oil and in fish in tomato sauce. In aqueous and acidic foodstuffs BADGE readily hydrolyses into mono- and dihydrolysed products (BADGE.H

O and BADGE.2H

O). In this study BADGE.H
2
O was not found in any food sample, whereas BADGE.2H
2
O was found in levels up to 2.6mg/kg. The Scientific Committee for Food (SCF) of the European Commission has proposed that a limit of restriction of 1mg/kg food shall include BADGE itself and BADGE.H

O, BADGE.HCl, BADGE.2HCl and BADGE.HCL.H

O. The present results indicate that the migration of BADGE.HCl and BADGE.2HCl, compounds with almost no data on toxicity, implies a greater problem than BADGE.H

To collect information on the use of the Reveal implantable loop recorder (ILR) in the patient care pathway and to investigate its effectiveness in the diagnosis of unexplained recurrent syncope in ...everyday clinical practice.
Prospective, multicentre, observational study conducted in 2006-2009 in 10 European countries and Israel. Eligible patients had recurrent unexplained syncope or pre-syncope. Subjects received a Reveal Plus, DX or XT. Follow up was until the first recurrence of a syncopal event leading to a diagnosis or for ≥1 year. In the course of the study, patients were evaluated by an average of three different specialists for management of their syncope and underwent a median of 13 tests (range 9-20). Significant physical trauma had been experienced in association with a syncopal episode by 36% of patients. Average follow-up time after ILR implant was 10±6 months. Follow-up visit data were available for 570 subjects. The percentages of patients with recurrence of syncope were 19, 26, and 36% after 3, 6, and 12 months, respectively. Of 218 events within the study, ILR-guided diagnosis was obtained in 170 cases (78%), of which 128 (75%) were cardiac.
A large number of diagnostic tests were undertaken in patients with unexplained syncope without providing conclusive data. In contrast, the ILR revealed or contributed to establishing the mechanism of syncope in the vast majority of patients. The findings support the recommendation in current guidelines that an ILR should be implanted early rather than late in the evaluation of unexplained syncope.
We studied determinants of cadmium status and kidney function in nonsmoking men and women living on farms in southern Sweden. Median blood Cd (BCd) was 1.8 nmol/L (range, 0.38-18) and median urinary ...Cd (UCd) was 0.23 nmol/mmol creatinine (range, 0.065-0.99). The intake of Cd per kilogram body weight did not significantly differ between sexes and did not correlate with BCd or UCd, which may be explained by a low and varying bioavailibility of Cd from food items. However, when a subgroup of the study population, couples of never-smoking men and women, were compared, a lower intake per kilogram body weight was found in the women, but the women had a 1.8 times higher BCd and a 1.4 times higher UCd. The higher female BCd and UCd may be explained by higher absorption due to low iron status. BCd and UCd both increased with age and were higher in the ex-smokers, who had stopped smoking more than 5 years before the study, compared to never-smokers. The contribution of locally produced food to the total Cd intake was relatively low and varied. Males living in areas with low soil Cd had lower UCd than the others. However, Cd levels in kidneys from pigs, fed locally produced cereals, did not predict BCd or UCd in humans at the same farms. The kidney function parameter β2-microglobulin-creatinine clearance was related to UCd, whereas urinary protein-HC, N-acetyl-β-glucoseaminidase or albumin-creatinine clearance was not when age was accounted for. Hence, even at the low exposure levels in this study population, there was an indication of effect on biochemical markers of renal function.

The widely used imidazole fungicide prochloraz displays anti-androgenic effects partly via inhibition of testicular steroidogenesis and testosterone secretion. Adrenal steroidogenesis and hormone ...secretion may also be a target of this endocrine disruptor. Herein, we demonstrate a dose-dependent inhibition of cortisol secretion and a biphasic effect on aldosterone secretion, with a 2-fold stimulation at low concentrations and a strong inhibition at high concentrations, following prochloraz treatment (0–10μM) of human adrenocortical H295R cells. Analysis of the dose-dependent effects of prochloraz on the secretion of steroidogenic intermediates suggested that the observed effects on cortisol and aldosterone secretion might be mediated by inhibition of the steroidogenic steps catalysed by CYP17A1 and CYP21A2. The inhibition of CYP17A1 was reflected on the level of expression of steroidogenic genes as analysed by quantitative RT-PCR. In addition, analysis of enzyme activity showed a dose-dependent inhibitory effect of prochloraz on the activity of CYP17A1 and CYP21A2, but not CYP11B1. We have demonstrated specific effects of prochloraz on adrenal steroidogenic pathways and hormone secretion via inhibition of steroidogenic CYP enzymes. The disruption of adrenal hormone secretion may result in altered endocrine homeostasis and affect human health.

The main sources of cadmium (Cd) input to soils have been phosphate fertilizers and deposition from air. In organic farming, phosphate fertilizers are not used, which may in the long term result in ...lower Cd levels. In the present study, feed, kidney, liver, and manure from growing/finishing pigs raised conventionally and organically on the same farm were microwave-digested and analyzed for Cd by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry. Cd was also analyzed in soil and water. A quality control program was included. The organic pigs (n = 40) were raised outdoors and fed an organic feed; the conventional pigs (n = 40) were raised indoors and given a conventional feed. The Cd levels in organic and conventional feed were 39.9 microg/kg and 51.8 microg/kg, respectively. Organic feed contained 2% potato protein, which contributed 17% of the Cd content. Conventional feed contained 5% beet fiber, which contributed 38% of total Cd content. Both feeds contained vitamin-mineral mixtures with high levels of Cd: 991 microg/kg in organic and 589 microg/kg in conventional feed. There was a significant negative linear relationship between Cd concentration in kidney and kidney weight. There was no significant difference in liver Cd levels between organic and conventional pigs and the mean +/- SD was 15.4 +/- 3.0. In spite of the lower level of Cd in the organic feed, the organic pigs had significantly higher levels in kidneys than the conventional pigs, 96.1 +/- 19.5 microg/kg wet weight (mean +/- SD; n = 37) and 84.0 +/- 17.6 microg/kg wet weight (n = 40), respectively. Organic pigs had higher Cd levels in manure, indicating a higher Cd exposure from the environment, such as ingestion of soil. Differences in feed compositions and bioavailability of Cd from the feed components may also explain the different kidney levels of Cd.
Effects on monoaminergic and cholinergic transmitter systems as well as neurotrophins were characterized in developing Sprague-Dawley rats directly exposed to 5 ppm cadmium in the drinking water or ...indirectly via exposed dams. Cadmium was given to dams during the lactation period, from parturition to postnatal day 17, and/or to the offspring until postnatal day 42. Cresyl violet staining and glial fibrillary acidic protein immunohistochemistry did not reveal any obvious neuropathology after cadmium exposure. Following high-power microwave fixation, concentrations of acetylcholine (ACh) and monoamines were determined in cerebral cortex, striatum, and hippocampus using HPLC with electrochemical detection. ACh, dopamine, and noradrenaline levels were not significantly affected after the different cadmium exposures. Cortical levels of serotonin were significantly reduced in rats exposed to cadmium during lactation as well as in rats exposed to cadmium during both lactation and postweaning. A major decrease in 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid was found in cortex and hippocampus in rats exposed to cadmium during lactation. The regional characteristics of cadmium toxicity as reflected in changes of neurotrophins were studied using in situ hybridization histochemistry with oligonucleotide probes and phosphoimaging evaluation. No significant changes in the mRNA expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), neurotrophin-3, and the high-affinity tyrosine kinase receptor of BDNF, trkB, were detected. The present results demonstrate that exposure to levels of cadmium as low as 5 ppm in the drinking water leads to neurochemical disturbances of the serotonergic system in the offspring during the lactational period.

PHENIX has measured the e(+)e(-) pair continuum in root s(NN) = 200 GeV Au+Au and p+p collisions over a wide range of mass and transverse momenta. The e(+)e(-) yield is compared to the expectations ...from hadronic sources, based on PHENIX measurements. In the intermediate-mass region, between the masses of the phi and the J/psi meson, the yield is consistent with expectations from correlated c (c) over bar production, although other mechanisms are not ruled out. In the low-mass region, below the phi, the p+p inclusive mass spectrum is well described by known contributions from light meson decays. In contrast, the Au+Au minimum bias inclusive mass spectrum in this region shows an enhancement by a factor of 4.7 +/- 0.4(stat) +/- 1.5(syst) +/- 0.9(model). At low mass (m(ee) < 0.3 GeV/c(2)) and high p(T) (1 < p(T) < 5 GeV/c) an enhanced e(+)e(-) pair yield is observed that is consistent with production of virtual direct photons. This excess is used to infer the yield of real direct photons. In central Au+Au collisions, the excess of the direct photon yield over the p+p is exponential in p(T), with inverse slope T = 221 +/- 19(stat) +/- 19(syst) MeV. Hydrodynamical models with initial temperatures ranging from T-init similar or equal to 300-600 MeV at times of 0.6-0.15 fm/c after the collision are in qualitative agreement with the direct photon data in Au+Au. For low p(T) < 1 GeV/c the low-mass region shows a further significant enhancement that increases with centrality and has an inverse slope of T similar or equal to 100 MeV. Theoretical models underpredict the low-mass, low-p(T) enhancement.

A method for determining ochratoxin A in milk has been elaborated in which the sample was subjected to a liquid-liquid extraction step and then purified on a silica gel column packed in a Pasteur ...pipet. The purified samples were analyzed by ion-pair liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection. The detection and quantitation limits for determination of ochratoxin A in cow's milk were 10 and 40 ng ochratoxin A/L milk, respectively. The same limits were valid for the analysis of human milk. A total of 36 cow's milk and 40 human milk samples were analyzed. All samples were collected in Sweden. Ochratoxin A was found in 5 (14%) of the cow's milk samples (range 10-40 ng/mL) and in 23 (58%) of the human milk samples (range 10-40 ng/L). Blood samples were collected from the mothers who gave milk samples. A total of 39 samples were analyzed. All blood samples contained ochratoxin A in concentrations exceeding the quantitation limit (60 ng/L blood). The mean concentration of ochratoxin A in the samples was 167 ng/L blood (range 90-940 ng/L). The concentration of ochratoxin A in human milk was < or = 0.1 of that in the human blood.
