Spectroscopy of an unbound nucleus
17
C was performed using the SAMURAI spectrometer at RIBF of RIKEN. Six resonances were observed for the
16
C+n system with relative energies of 0.52, 0.77, 1.36, ...1.91, 2.22 and 3.20 MeV. The excitation energies (
E
x
) of the observed resonances were deduced, by taking into account the states of the
16
C fragments identified by coincident
γ
rays, as
E
x
=(3.02), 1.51, (3.86), 2.65, (4.72) and 3.94 MeV. The orbital angular momenta of the two observed states in
17
C at
E
x
=2.65 and 3.94 MeV were determined as 1 by comparing parallel momentum distributions with theoretical predictions.

A question whether nuclei consisting of four neutrons can exist and how is one of the most important issues to be solved in nuclear physics. In order to resolve this fundamental question, two ...distinctive experiments were carried out by employing a high-intensity 8He secondary beam. The methods of an exothermic double charge exchange reaction on 4He nuclei and an α knockout reaction on 8He nuclei are introduced and a comparison of the results of the experiments is described. The obtained results exhibit event concentration or a narrow peak just above the four-neutron mass threshold with a broad bump component up to over 60 MeV, which corresponds to continuum states. The observation of the narrow peak provides compelling evidence for the formation of the strongly correlated four-neutron system.

Se beams outside the SAMURAI dipole magnet. The experimental setup consists of the SπRIT TPC, a Multiplicity Trigger Array, a KATANA array, and a Active Veto array. The TPC is fully equipped with a newly-developed read-out electronics system, GET electronics. The trigger logic to select events of the TPC based on the ancillary detectors was tested. The analysis software, SpiRITROOT, was developed to analyze the SπRIT TPC data to determine the best trigger logic for upcoming experiments.

Spallation reaction for the long-lived fission product

Pd has been studied for the purpose of nuclear waste transmutation. The isotopic-distribution cross sections on both proton and deuteron ...were obtained at 118 MeV/nucleon in inverse kinematics at the RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory. A large cross-section difference was found between the proton and deuteron results for the light-mass products. The data were compared with the SPACS semi-empirical parameterization and the PHITS calculations including both the intranuclear cascade and evaporation processes. Abstract
Coulomb breakup reactions of $^{93,94}$Zr have been studied in inverse kinematics at incident beam energies of about 200 MeV/nucleon in order to evaluate neutron capture reaction methods. ...The $^{93}$Zr(n,$\gamma$)$^{94}$Zr reaction is particularly important as a candidate nuclear transmutation reaction for the long-lived fission product $^{93}$Zr in nuclear power plants. One- and two-neutron removal cross sections on Pb and C targets were measured to deduce the inclusive Coulomb breakup cross sections, 375 $\pm$ 29 (stat.) $\pm$ 30 (syst.) and 403 $\pm$ 26 (stat.) $\pm$ 31 (syst.) mb for $^{93}$Zr and $^{94}$Zr, respectively. The results are compared with estimates using the standard Lorentzian model and microscopic calculations. The results reveal a possible contribution of the pygmy dipole resonance or giant quadrupole resonance in the Coulomb breakup reactions of $^{94}$Zr.
The isotope-production cross sections in p- and d-induced reactions on 93Zr at approximately 50 MeV/nucleon were measured by using the inverse-kinematics method at RIKEN RI Beam Factory. The measured ...data were compared with the previous experimental 93Zr + p, d at 105 and 209 MeV/nucleon data. This comparison represents that the isotopic distribution of production cross sections at 51 MeV p-induced reaction is appreciably different from those at 105 and 209 MeV. On the other hand, these three data sets show that the shape of isotopic distribution is similar in the case of the d-induced reaction. Also, the measured production cross sections were compared with the theoretical model calculations with Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System (PHITS) version 3.10 in order to investigate the reproducibility of the models implemented in PHITS. The calculations well reproduced the experimental data even in such low incident energy, while several discrepancies were still seen as in the p- and d-induced reactions at 105 and 209 MeV/nucleon.
