This paper presents the Forward Time Projection Chamber (FTPC) system of the NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN SPS accelerator. This TPC system applies a novel tandem-TPC design to reduce the ...background originating from particle tracks not synchronous with the event trigger. The FTPC system is composed of three chambers with alternating drift field directions. The chambers were installed directly along the beamline region of the NA61/SHINE detector in a medium- to high-intensity (10−100kHz) hadron or ion beam. The tandem TPC system has proved to be capable of rejecting out-of-time background tracks not associated with a primary interaction. In addition, the system performs tracking and inclusive dE/dx particle identification for particles at and near the beam momentum. This shows that a tandem-TPC-based chamber design may be used also in other experimental applications with a demand for low material budget, tracking capability, and the need for dE/dx particle identification, all while in the presence of a relatively high particle flux.

Spectra are presented as function of rapidity and transverse momentum and are compared to predictions of current models. The measurements serve as the baseline in the NA61/SHINE study of the properties of the onset of deconfinement and search for the critical point of strongly interacting matter.

NA61/SHINE is a multipurpose fixed-target experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. The main goals of the NA61/SHINE strong interaction program are to discover the critical point of strongly ...interacting matter as well as to study the properties of produced particles relevant for the study of the onset of deconfinement -- the transition between the state of hadronic matter and the quark-gluon plasma. An analysis of hadron production properties is performed in proton-proton, proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus interactions as a function of collision energy and size of the colliding nuclei to achieve these goals. The NA61/SHINE results from a strong interaction measurement program are presented. In particular, the latest results from different reactions Ar+Sc, Xe+La, and Pb+Pb on hadron spectra and fluctuations are discussed. Additionally, the recent measurements of kaon production in Ar+Sc collisions at \(\sqrt{s_{NN}}=11.94~\text{GeV}\) are mentioned. The NA61/SHINE results are compared with worldwide experiments and predictions of various models, like EPOS, PHSD, UrQMD, and others.

yields were measured with increased precision compared to the previously published NA61/SHINE results, while the

and proton yields were obtained for the first time. A strategy for dealing with the dependence of the results on the incoming proton beam profile is proposed. The purpose of these measurements is to reduce significantly the (anti)neutrino flux uncertainty in the T2K long-baseline neutrino experiment by constraining the production of (anti)neutrino ancestors coming from the T2K target.

The NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron studies the onset of deconfinement in strongly interacting matter through a beam energy scan of particle production in collisions of ...nuclei of varied sizes. This paper presents results on inclusive double-differential spectra, transverse momentum and rapidity distributions and mean multiplicities of π±, K±, p and $\bar{ρ}$ produced in 40Ar + 45Sc collisions at beam momenta of 13A, 19A, 30A, 40A, 75A and 150A Ge V/c. The analysis uses the 10% most central collisions, where the observed forward energy defines centrality. The energy dependence of the K±/π+ ratios as well as of inverse slope parameters of the K± transverse mass distributions are placed in between those found in inelastic ρ + ρ and central Pb + Pb collisions. The results obtained here establish a system-size dependence of hadron production properties that so far cannot be explained either within statistical or dynamical models.

This paper presents multiplicity measurements of $K^0_S$, Λ, and $\bar{Λ}$ produced in 120 GeV/c proton-carbon interactions. The measurements were made using data collected at the NA61/SHINE ...experiment during two different periods. Decays of these neutral hadrons impact the measured π+, π-, p and $\bar{p}$ multiplicities in the 120 GeV/c proton-carbon reaction, which are crucial inputs for long-baseline neutrino experiment predictions of neutrino beam flux. The double-differential multiplicities presented here will be used to more precisely measure charged-hadron multiplicities in this reaction, and to reweight neutral hadron production in neutrino beam Monte Carlo simulations.

This paper presents measurements of production cross sections and inelastic cross sections for the following reactions: 60 GeV/c protons with C, Be, Al targets and 120 GeV/c protons with C and Be ...targets. The analysis is performed using the NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. First measurements are obtained using protons at 120 GeV/c, while the results for protons at 60 GeV/c are compared with previously published measurements. These interaction cross section measurements are critical inputs for neutrino flux prediction in current and future accelerator-based long-baseline neutrino experiments.

Abstract This paper reports measurements of two-pion femtoscopic correlations in Be+Be collisions at a beam momentum of 150 $$A\,\hbox {GeV}\!/\!c$$ A GeV / c (energy available in the center-of-mass ...system for nucleon pair $$\sqrt{s_{\text {NN}}} = 16.84$$ s NN = 16.84 GeV) by the NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN SPS accelerator. The obtained momentum space correlation functions can be well described by a Lévy distributed source model. The transverse mass dependence of the Lévy source parameters is presented, and their possible theoretical interpretations are discussed. The results show that the Lévy exponent $$\alpha $$ α is approximately constant as a function of $$m_{\text {T}}$$ m T , and far from both the Gaussian case of $$\alpha = 2$$ α = 2 or the conjectured value at the critical endpoint, $$\alpha = 0.5$$ α = 0.5 . The radius scale parameter R shows a slight decrease in $$m_{\text {T}}$$ m T , which can be explained as a signature of transverse flow. Finally, an approximately constant trend of the intercept parameter $$\lambda $$ λ as a function of $$m_{\text {T}}$$ m T was observed, similar to previous NA44 S + Pb results (obtained with a Gaussian approximation, but unlike RHIC results).
