Lignocellulosic biomass has attracted great interest in recent years for energy production due to its renewability and carbon–neutral nature. There are various ways to convert lignocellulose to gaseous, liquid and solid fuels via thermochemical, chemical or biological approaches. Typical biomass derived fuels include syngas, bio-gas, bio-oil, bioethanol and biochar, all of which could be used as fuels for furnace, engine, turbine or fuel cells. Direct biomass fuel cells mediated by various electron carriers provide a new direction of lignocellulose conversion. Various metal and non-metal based carriers have been screened for mediating the electron transfer from biomass to oxygen thus generating electricity. The power density of direct biomass fuel cells can be over 100 mW cm−2, which shows promise for practical applications. Lignocellulose and its isolated components, primarily cellulose and lignin, have also been paid considerable attention as sustainable carbonaceous materials for preparation of electrodes for supercapacitors, lithium-ion batteries and lithium-sulfur batteries. In this paper, we have provided a state-of-the-art review on the research progress of lignocellulosic biomass as feedstock and materials for power generation and energy storage focusing on the chemistry aspects of the processes. It was recommended that process integration should be performed to reduce the cost for thermochemical and biological conversion of lignocellulose to biofuels, while efforts should be made to increase efficiency and improve the properties for biomass fuelled fuel cells and biomass derived electrodes for energy storage.

New photoactive composites to efficiently remove organic dyes from water are reported. These consist of Cu2O/TiO2 nanoparticles in a novel inorganic geopolymer matrix modified by a large tertiary ammonium species (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, CTAB) whose presence in the matrix is demonstrated by FTIR spectroscopy. The CTAB does not disrupt the tetrahedral geopolymer structural silica and alumina units as demonstrated by 29Si and 27Al MAS NMR spectroscopy. SEM/EDS, TEM and BET measurements suggest that the Cu2O/TiO2 nanoparticles are homogenously distributed on the surface and within the geopolymer pores. The mechanism of removal of methylene blue (MB) dye from solution consists of a combination of adsorption (under dark conditions) and photodegradation (under UV radiation). MB adsorption in the dark follows pseudo second-order kinetics and is described by Freundlich-Langmuir type isotherms. The performance of the CTAB-modified geopolymer based composites is superior to composites based on unmodified geopolymer hosts, the most effective composite containing 5wt% Cu2O/TiO2 in a CTAB-modified geopolymer host. These composites constitute a new class of materials with excellent potential in environmental protection applications.

Summary
The cannabis leaf is iconic, but it is the flowers of cannabis that are consumed for the psychoactive and medicinal effects of their specialized metabolites. Cannabinoid metabolites, together ...with terpenes, are produced in glandular trichomes. Superficially, stalked and sessile trichomes in cannabis only differ in size and whether they have a stalk. The objectives of this study were: to define each trichome type using patterns of autofluorescence and secretory cell numbers, to test the hypothesis that stalked trichomes develop from sessile‐like precursors, and to test whether metabolic specialization occurs in cannabis glandular trichomes. A two‐photon microscopy technique using glandular trichome intrinsic autofluorescence was developed which demonstrated that stalked glandular trichomes possessed blue autofluorescence correlated with high cannabinoid levels. These stalked trichomes had 12–16 secretory disc cells and strongly monoterpene‐dominant terpene profiles. In contrast, sessile trichomes on mature flowers and vegetative leaves possessed red‐shifted autofluorescence, eight secretory disc cells and less monoterpene‐dominant terpene profiles. Moreover, intrinsic autofluorescence patterns and disc cell numbers supported a developmental model where stalked trichomes develop from apparently sessile trichomes. Transcriptomes of isolated floral trichomes revealed strong expression of cannabinoid and terpene biosynthetic genes, as well as uncharacterized genes highly co‐expressed with CBDA synthase. Identification and characterization of two previously unknown and highly expressed monoterpene synthases highlighted the metabolic specialization of stalked trichomes for monoterpene production. These unique properties and highly expressed genes of cannabis trichomes determine the medicinal, psychoactive and sensory properties of cannabis products.

The Stӧber process is commonly used for synthesising spherical silica particles. This article reports the first comprehensive study of how the process variables can be used to obtain ...monodispersed particles of specific size. The modal particle size could be selected within in the range 20–500nm. There is great therapeutic potential for bioactive glass nanoparticles, as they can be internalised within cells and perform sustained delivery of active ions. Biodegradable bioactive glass nanoparticles are also used in nanocomposites. Modification of the Stӧber process so that the particles can contain cations such as calcium, whilst maintaining monodispersity, is desirable. Here, whilst calcium incorporation is achieved, with a homogenous distribution, careful characterisation shows that much of the calcium is not incorporated. A maximum of 10mol% CaO can be achieved and previous reports are likely to have overestimated the amount of calcium incorporated.

(Calcium,alkali)-aluminosilicate gel frameworks are the basis of modern cements and alkali-activated materials for sustainable infrastructure and radioactive waste immobilization and also find ...application in glass alteration, mineral weathering, and zeolite synthesis. Here, we resolve the nanostructure of these gels that dictates mass transport, solubility, and mechanical properties. The key structural motifs comprising hydrous (calcium,alkali)-aluminosilicate gels are identified via 17O, 23Na, and 27Al triple-quantum magic angle spinning and 29Si magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy of a novel class of stoichiometrically controlled 17O-enriched multiphase gels. Increased Ca content promotes low-Al, high-Ca chain-structured “C-S-H-type” products exhibiting significant nanostructural ordering, low levels of chain cross-linking, predominant Ca coordination of nonbridging oxygen atoms, and an increase in proton association with CaO layers to form Ca–OH sites. Al substitution is identified in multiple sites in the silicate chains, including cross-linking, bridging, and pairing tetrahedra. Increased Al content increases the proportion of cross-linking sites and gel disorder. The large increase in SiIV–O–AlIV sites increases the relative amounts of Na+ and AlV species charge-balancing AlO4 – tetrahedra and results in the formation of an additional disordered low-calcium, framework-structured alkali aluminosilicate (“N-A-S-H-type”) gel, with high Al and Na contents. Changes in bulk composition significantly alter the nanostructures of the C-S-H-type and N-A-S-H-type gels. Mean SiIV–O–AlIV bond angles for each type of AlIV site environment are highly consistent, with compositional changes dictating the relative proportions of individual AlIV species but not altering the local structure of each AlIV site. These findings reveal the molecular interactions governing the (calcium,alkali)-aluminosilicate gel nanostructure, which are crucial in controlling material properties and durability.

Abstract
The valuable cannabinoid and terpenoid metabolites of Cannabis sativa L. are produced by floral glandular trichomes. The trichomes consist of secretory disk cells, which produce the abundant ...lipidic metabolites, and an extracellular storage cavity. The mechanisms of apoplastic cavity formation to accumulate and store metabolites in cannabis glandular trichomes remain wholly unexplored. Here, we identify key wall components and how they change during cannabis trichome development. While glycome and monosaccharide analyses revealed that glandular trichomes have loosely bound xyloglucans and pectic polysaccharides, quantitative immunolabeling with wall-directed antibodies revealed precise spatiotemporal distributions of cell wall epitopes. An epidermal-like identity of early trichome walls matured into specialized wall domains over development. Cavity biogenesis was marked by separation of the subcuticular wall from the underlying surface wall in a homogalacturonan and α-1,5 arabinan epitope-rich zone and was associated with a reduction in fucosylated xyloglucan epitopes. As the cavity filled, a matrix with arabinogalactan and α-1,5 arabinan epitopes enclosed the metabolite droplets. At maturity, the disk cells’ apical wall facing the storage cavity accumulated rhamnogalacturonan-I epitopes near the plasma membrane. Together, these data indicate that cannabis glandular trichomes undergo spatiotemporal remodeling at specific wall subdomains to facilitate storage cavity formation and metabolite storage.

Woody (lignocellulosic) plant biomass is an abundant renewable feedstock, rich in polysaccharides that are bound into an insoluble fiber composite with lignin. Marine crustacean woodborers of the ...genus Limnoria are among the few animals that can survive on a diet of this recalcitrant material without relying on gut resident microbiota. Analysis of fecal pellets revealed that Limnoria targets hexose-containing polysaccharides (mainly cellulose, and also glucomannans), corresponding with the abundance of cellulases in their digestive system, but xylans and lignin are largely unconsumed. We show that the limnoriid respiratory protein, hemocyanin, is abundant in the hindgut where wood is digested, that incubation of wood with hemocyanin markedly enhances its digestibility by cellulases, and that it modifies lignin. We propose that this activity of hemocyanins is instrumental to the ability of Limnoria to feed on wood in the absence of gut symbionts. These findings may hold potential for innovations in lignocellulose biorefining.
Background
Waiting lists for kidney transplantation continue to grow. Live kidney donation significantly reduces waiting times and improves long‐term outcomes for recipients. Major disincentives to ...potential kidney donors are the pain and morbidity associated with surgery. This is an update of a review published in 2011.
Objectives
To assess the benefits and harms of open donor nephrectomy (ODN), laparoscopic donor nephrectomy (LDN), hand‐assisted LDN (HALDN) and robotic donor nephrectomy (RDN) as appropriate surgical techniques for live kidney donors.
Search methods
We contacted the Information Specialist and searched the Cochrane Kidney and Transplant Register of Studies up to 31 March 2024 using search terms relevant to this review. Studies in the Register are identified through searches of CENTRAL, MEDLINE, and EMBASE, conference proceedings, the International Clinical Trials Registry Platform (ICTRP) Search Portal, and ClinicalTrials.gov.
Selection criteria
Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) comparing LDN with ODN, HALDN, or RDN were included.
Data collection and analysis
Two review authors independently screened titles and s for eligibility, assessed study quality, and extracted data. We contacted study authors for additional information where necessary. Summary estimates of effect were obtained using a random‐effects model, and results were expressed as risk ratios (RR) and their 95% confidence intervals (CI) for dichotomous outcomes and mean difference (MD) or standardised mean difference (SMD) and 95% CI for continuous outcomes. Confidence in the evidence was assessed using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) approach.
Main results
Thirteen studies randomising 1280 live kidney donors to ODN, LDN, HALDN, or RDN were included. All studies were assessed as having a low or unclear risk of bias for selection bias. Five studies had a high risk of bias for blinding.
Seven studies randomised 815 live kidney donors to LDN or ODN. LDN was associated with reduced analgesia use (high certainty evidence) and shorter hospital stay, a longer procedure and longer warm ischaemia time (moderate certainty evidence). There were no overall differences in blood loss, perioperative complications, or need for operations (low or very low certainty evidence).
Three studies randomised 270 live kidney donors to LDN or HALDN. There were no differences between HALDN and LDN for analgesia requirement, hospital stay (high certainty evidence), duration of procedure (moderate certainty evidence), blood loss, perioperative complications, or reoperations (low certainty evidence). The evidence for warm ischaemia time was very uncertain due to high heterogeneity.
One study randomised 50 live kidney donors to retroperitoneal ODN or HALDN and reported less pain and analgesia requirements with ODN. It found decreased blood loss and duration of the procedure with HALDN. No differences were found in perioperative complications, reoperations, hospital stay, or primary warm ischaemia time.
One study randomised 45 live kidney donors to LDN or RDN and reported a longer warm ischaemia time with RDN but no differences in analgesia requirement, duration of procedure, blood loss, perioperative complications, reoperations, or hospital stay.
One study randomised 100 live kidney donors to two variations of LDN and reported no differences in hospital stay, duration of procedure, conversion rates, primary warm ischaemia times, or complications (not meta‐analysed).
The conversion rates to ODN were 6/587 (1.02%) in LDN, 1/160 (0.63%) in HALDN, and 0/15 in RDN.
Graft outcomes were rarely or selectively reported across the studies. There were no differences between LDN and ODN for early graft loss, delayed graft function, acute rejection, ureteric complications, kidney function or one‐year graft loss.
In a meta‐regression analysis between LDN and ODN, moderate certainty evidence on procedure duration changed significantly in favour of LDN over time (yearly reduction = 7.12 min, 95% CI 2.56 to 11.67; P = 0.0022). Differences in very low certainty evidence on perioperative complications also changed significantly in favour of LDN over time (yearly change in LnRR = 0.107, 95% CI 0.022 to 0.192; P = 0.014). Various different combinations of techniques were used in each study, resulting in heterogeneity among the results.
Authors' conclusions
LDN is associated with less pain compared to ODN and has comparable pain to HALDN and RDN. HALDN is comparable to LDN in all outcomes except warm ischaemia time, which may be associated with a reduction. One study reported kidneys obtained during RDN had greater warm ischaemia times. Complications and occurrences of perioperative events needing further intervention were equivalent between all methods.
Driven by the clinical need for a strong tissue adhesive with elastomeric material properties, a departure from legacy crosslinking chemistries was sought as a multipurpose platform for tissue ...mending. A fresh approach to bonding wet substrates has yielded a synthetic biomaterial that overcomes the drawbacks of free-radical and nature-inspired bioadhesives. A food-grade liquid polycaprolactone grafted with carbene precursors yields CaproGlu. The first-of-its-kind low-viscosity prepolymer is VOC-free and requires no photoinitiators. Grafted diazirine end-groups form carbene diradicals upon low energy UVA (365 nm) activation that immediately crosslink tissue surfaces; no pre-heating or animal-derived components are required. The hydrophobic polymeric environment enables metastable functional groups not possible in formulations requiring solvents or water. Activated diazirine within CaproGlu is uniquely capable of crosslinking all amino acids, even on wet tissue substrates. CaproGlu undergoes rapid liquid-to-biorubber transition within seconds of UVA exposure–features not found in any other bioadhesive. The exceptional shelf stability of CaproGlu allows gamma sterilization with no change in material properties. CaproGlu wet adhesiveness is challenged against current unmet clinical needs: anastomosis of spliced blood vessels, anesthetic muscle patches, and human platelet-mediating coatings. The versatility of CaproGlu enables both organic and inorganic composites for future bioadhesive platforms.
