Birds play a vital role in the study of ecosystems and biodiversity. Accurate bird identification helps monitor biodiversity, understand the functions of ecosystems, and develop effective ...conservation strategies. However, previous bird sound recognition methods often relied on single features and overlooked the spatial information associated with these features, leading to low accuracy. Recognizing this gap, the present study proposed a bird sound recognition method that employs multiple convolutional neural-based networks and a transformer encoder to provide a reliable solution for identifying and classifying birds based on their unique sounds. We manually extracted various acoustic features as model inputs, and feature fusion was applied to obtain the final set of feature vectors. Feature fusion combines the deep features extracted by various networks, resulting in a more comprehensive feature set, thereby improving recognition accuracy. The multiple integrated acoustic features, such as mel frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCC), chroma features (Chroma) and Tonnetz features, were encoded by a transformer encoder. The transformer encoder effectively extracted the positional relationships between bird sound features, resulting in enhanced recognition accuracy. The experimental results demonstrated the exceptional performance of our method with an accuracy of 97.99%, a recall of 96.14%, an F1 score of 96.88% and a precision of 97.97% on the Birdsdata dataset. Furthermore, our method achieved an accuracy of 93.18%, a recall of 92.43%, an F1 score of 93.14% and a precision of 93.25% on the Cornell Bird Challenge 2020 (CBC) dataset.

Retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) axons are the signal carriers of visual information between retina and brain. Therefore, they play one of the important roles affected in many optic neurodegenerative ...diseases like glaucoma. Among the genetic risks associated with glaucoma, the E50K mutation in the Optineurin (OPTN) gene are known to result in glaucoma in the absence of increased intraocular pressure (IOP), whereas the relevant pathological mechanism and neurological issues remain to be further investigated. In this study, the OPTN (E50K) mutant mouse model was established through CRISPR/Cas9-mediated genome editing, and aging-related RGCs loss and the visual dysfunction were identified. In E50K mice 16 months old, the axonal transport decreased comparing to wild-type (WT) mice at the same age. Furthermore, results of electron microscopy demonstrated significant morphological anomaly of mitochondria in RGCs axons of young E50K mice 3 months old, and these changes were aggravated with age. These indicated that the damaged mitochondria-associated dysfunction of RGCs axon should play an etiological role in glaucoma as an age-related outcome of OPTN (E50K) mutation. The findings of this study have potential implications for the targeted prevention and treatment of NTG.
I-125 seeds brachytherapy (ISB) has been used to improve the clinical effectiveness of transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). We aim to appraise the safety and ...clinical efficacy of combined ISB and TACE for the treatment of subcapsular HCC.
A retrospective investigative study extending from January 2017 to December 2020, involved individuals suffering from subcapsular HCC, who were subjected to TACE treatment with or without ISB in our center. The clinical effectiveness was compared between 2 groups.
Sixty-four patients, in total, with subcapsular HCC had to undergo TACE with (n = 32) or without (n = 32) ISB in our center. After CT-guided ISB, only 2 (6.3%) patients experienced a self-limited pneumothorax. Combined treatment resulted in a significantly higher complete response (56.3% vs. 18.8%, P = 0.002) and total response (90.7% vs. 59.4%, P = 0.004) rates than that of TACE alone. In comparison to the TACE alone group, the median progression-free survival was substantially longer in the combined treatment group (11 months vs. 5 months, P = 0.016). Further, 15 and 28 patients in combined and TACE alone groups respectively died within the follow-up. The median OS was comparable between combined and TACE alone groups (22 months vs. 18 months, P = 0.529).
Combined TACE and ISB therapy is a safe treatment method for individuals suffering from subcapsular HCC. When compared, combined treatment had significantly enhanced clinical efficacy as a subcapsular HCC therapy, in comparison to TACE alone.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a prevalent malignancy with a pressing need for improved therapeutic response and prognosis prediction. This study delves into a novel predictive model related to ...ferroptosis, a regulated cell death mechanism disrupting metabolic processes. Single-cell sequencing data analysis identified subpopulations of HCC cells exhibiting activated ferroptosis and distinct gene expression patterns compared to normal tissues. Utilizing the LASSO-Cox algorithm, we constructed a model with 10 single-cell biomarkers associated with ferroptosis, namely STMN1, S100A10, FABP5, CAPG, RGCC, ENO1, ANXA5, UTRN, CXCR3, and ITM2A. Comprehensive analyses using these biomarkers revealed variations in immune infiltration, tumor mutation burden, drug sensitivity, and biological functional profiles between risk groups. Specific associations were established between particular immune cell subtypes and certain gene expression patterns. Treatment response analyses indicated potential benefits from anti-tumor immune therapy for the low-risk group and chemotherapy advantages for the high-risk group. The integration of this single-cell level model with clinicopathological features enabled accurate overall survival prediction and effective risk stratification in HCC patients. Our findings illuminate the potential of ferroptosis-related genes in tailoring therapy and prognosis prediction for HCC, offering novel insights into the intricate interplay among ferroptosis, immune response, and HCC progression.

In this study, we investigate the dynamic processes and mechanical properties of lipid nanoparticle mixtures in a melt via dissipation particle dynamic simulation. Regulatory T (Treg) cells are crucial enforcers of immune homeostasis. Their characteristic suppressive function largely arises from an equally unique pattern of gene expression. A complex ...network of factors and processes contribute to this ‘signature’ Treg gene expression landscape. Many of these alter the level and activity of the Treg‐defining transcription factor Foxp3. As stable expression of Foxp3 is important for the ability of Treg cells to successfully prevent excessive or inappropriate immune activation, uncovering the mechanisms regulating Foxp3 level is required for the understanding and therapeutic exploitation of Tregs. While transcriptional regulation of the Foxp3 gene has been studied in depth, additional regulatory layers exist controlling the expression and activity of this key transcription factor. These include less‐defined mechanisms active at the post‐translational level. These pathways are just beginning to be elucidated. Here, we summarize emerging evidence for distinct, post‐translationally active, ubiquitin‐dependent pathways capable of controlling the activation and expression of Foxp3 and the function of Tregs. These pathways offer untapped opportunities for therapeutic fine‐tuning of Tregs and their all‐important restraint of the immune system.

Fe-Cr-Co hard magnetic ribbons with low Co content were prepared by melt-spinning coupled with multistep aging process, in which a certain amount of Si and Ti were added separately or together. This ...paper focuses on three types of ribbons, which are 61Fe-26Cr-12Co-1Si, 62Fe-25Cr-12Co-1Ti, and 62Fe-24Cr-12Co-1Si-1Ti ribbons, to investigate systematically the effects of single or combined addition of Si and Ti on phase structure, microstructure, magnetic structure, and magnetic properties of Fe-Cr-Co based ribbons at different states. It has been found that single Si addition is effective to improve the coercivity, whose value can reach up to 1026.6 Oe in 61Fe-26Cr-12Co-1Si ribbons, even higher than that of traditional bulk Fe-Cr-Co alloys. Single Ti addition facilitates the orientation growth along <; 100 > directions of body centered cubic-type phases in as-spun ribbons, resulting in higher remanence. Furthermore, combined addition of the Si and Ti can enhance the orientation degree of not only the as-spun ribbons but also the aged ones. Consequently, the highest remanence of 10106.7 Gs can be achieved in 62Fe-24Cr-12Co-1Si-1Ti ribbons treated by seven-step aging.
Angiogenesis is a process by which vessels are formed through preexisting ones, and this plays a key role in the progression of solid tumors. However, tumor vessels are influenced by excessive ...pro-angiogenic factors, resulting in deformed structures that facilitate the intravasation of tumor cells into the circulation and subsequent metastasis. Moreover, abnormal tumor vessels have low blood perfusion and thereby decreased oxygen infusion into tumors. This results in a hostile microenvironment that promotes epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), a process in which epithelial cells lose their polarity and gain increased motility, which is associated with metastasis and invasion. Here, we demonstrate that gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) facilitate tumor vasculature normalization, increase blood perfusion and alleviate hypoxia in melanoma tumors. Additionally, AuNPs were observed to reverse EMT in tumors, accompanied by the alleviation of lung metastasis. These AuNPs inhibited the migration of B16F10 cells and reversed EMT in B16F10 cells, indicating that AuNPs could directly regulate EMT independent of improvements in hypoxia. Taken together, our data demonstrated that AuNPs could induce tumor vasculature normalization and reverse EMT, resulting in decreased melanoma tumor metastasis.
Acute lung injury (ALI)/acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is characterized by diffuse inflammation of the lung parenchyma and refractory hypoxemia. Butorphanol is commonly used clinically ...for perioperative pain relief, but whether butorphanol can regulate LPS-induced alveolar macrophage polarization is unclear. In this study, we observed that butorphanol markedly attenuated sepsis-induced lung tissue injury and mortality in mice. Moreover, butorphanol also decreased the expression of M1 phenotype markers (TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β and iNOS) and enhanced the expression of M2 marker (CD206) in alveolar macrophages in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) of LPS-stimulated mice. Butorphanol administration reduced LPS-induced numbers of proinflammatory (M1) macrophages and increased numbers of anti-inflammatory (M2) macrophages in the lungs of mice. Furthermore, we found that butorphanol-mediated suppression of the LPS-induced increases in M1 phenotype marker expression (TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β and iNOS) in bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMDMs), and this effect was reversed by κ-opioid receptor (KOR) antagonists. Moreover, butorphanol inhibited the interaction of TLR4 with MyD88 and further suppressed NF-κB and MAPKs activation. In addition, butorphanol prevented the Toll/IL-1 receptor domain-containing adaptor inducing IFN-β (TRIF)-mediated IFN signaling pathway. These effects were ameliorated by KOR antagonists. Thus, butorphanol may promote macrophage polarization from a proinflammatory to an anti-inflammatory phenotype secondary to the inhibition of NF-κB, MAPKs, and the TRIF-mediated IFN signaling pathway through κ receptors.
