Spitzer

μ
m images. At the simplest level, we ...distinguish five environments: centres, bars, spiral arms, interarm regions, and discs without strong spirals. Slightly more sophisticated masks include rings and lenses, which are publicly released but not explicitly used in this paper. We examine trends with environment in the molecular gas content, star formation rate, and depletion time using PHANGS–ALMA CO(2–1) intensity maps and tracers of star formation. The interarm regions and discs without strong spirals clearly dominate in area, whereas molecular gas and star formation are quite evenly distributed among the five basic environments. We reproduce the molecular Kennicutt–Schmidt relation with a slope compatible with unity within the uncertainties and without significant slope differences among environments. In contrast to what has been suggested by early studies, we find that bars are not always deserts devoid of gas and star formation, but instead they show large diversity. Similarly, spiral arms do not account for most of the gas and star formation in disc galaxies, and they do not have shorter depletion times than the interarm regions. Spiral arms accumulate gas and star formation, without systematically boosting the star formation efficiency. Centres harbour remarkably high surface densities and on average shorter depletion times than other environments. Centres of barred galaxies show higher surface densities and wider distributions compared to the outer disc; yet, depletion times are similar to unbarred galaxies, suggesting highly intermittent periods of star formation when bars episodically drive gas inflow, without enhancing the central star formation efficiency permanently. In conclusion, we provide quantitative evidence that stellar structures in galaxies strongly affect the organisation of molecular gas and star formation, but their impact on star formation efficiency is more subtle.

Methods
Published literature from PubMed and Embase was retrieved. All studies that evaluated the association of at least one of the two
MC4R
polymorphism(s) with type 2 diabetes were included in the study. Pooled ORs with 95% CIs were calculated using the fixed-effects model.
Results
A total of 19 studies (comprising 34,195 cases and 89,178 controls) of the rs17782313 polymorphism (or its proxy rs12970134) were included in the meta-analysis. The results indicated that the rs17782313 polymorphism was significantly associated with type 2 diabetes risk among the overall study population (OR 1.10, 95% CI 1.07, 1.13,

Background
Kawasaki disease is a vasculitis most commonly afflicting children <5 years of age. Many autoimmune diseases are associated with up‐regulation of T helper (Th) 17 cells, and ...down‐regulation Treg cells. Few studies have examined the Th17/Treg expression in Kawasaki disease.
Methods
Blood samples were obtained from 186 children with Kawasaki disease at 24 h before IVIG therapy, followed by 3 days and 21 days after IVIG therapy. Thirty children with an acute febrile infectious disease and 30 healthy children were obtained as control. Plasma levels of Th17‐ and Treg‐related cytokines including IL‐6, IL‐17A, IL‐10, TGF‐β, and mRNA expression levels of RORγt and Foxp3 were tested.
Results
Patients with Kawasaki disease had higher levels of plasma IL‐17A (25.35 ± 3.21 vs 7.78 ± 1.78 pg/ml, P < 0.001) and IL‐6 (152.29 ± 21.94 vs 38.63 ± 12.40 pg/ml, P < 0.001) when compared to the febrile control group. IVIG resulted in a reduction in IL‐6 and IL‐17A at both 3 and 21 days after IVIG therapy. FoxP3 levels increased significantly 3 days after IVIG therapy (2.28 ± 0.34 vs 0.88 ± 0.14, P < 0.001). IVIG resistance was associated with higher levels of IL‐10 and IL‐17A.
Conclusion
Kawasaki disease was associated with higher IL‐17A and IL‐6, a cytokine profile similar to other autoimmune diseases. IVIG therapy resulted in increased expression of Treg‐related FoxP3. IVIG resistance was associated with higher levels of IL‐10 and IL‐17A. Our findings provide further evidence that Kawasaki disease is an autoimmune‐like disease.

In superconductors, electrons are paired and condensed into the ground state. An impurity can break the electron pairs into quasiparticles with energy states inside the superconducting gap. The ...characteristics of such in-gap states reflect accordingly the properties of the superconducting ground state. A zero-energy in-gap state is particularly noteworthy, because it can be the consequence of non-trivial pairing symmetry or topology. Here we use scanning tunnelling microscopy/spectroscopy to demonstrate that an isotropic zero-energy bound state with a decay length of ∼10 Å emerges at each interstitial iron impurity in superconducting Fe(Te,Se). More noticeably, this zero-energy bound state is robust against a magnetic field up to 8 T, as well as perturbations by neighbouring impurities. Such a spectroscopic feature has no natural explanation in terms of impurity states in superconductors with s-wave symmetry, but bears all the characteristics of the Majorana bound state proposed for topological superconductors, indicating that the superconducting state and the scattering mechanism of the interstitial iron impurities in Fe(Te,Se) are highly unconventional.

Abstract Deletion of transient receptor potential vanilloid type 1 (TRPV1)-expressing afferent neurons reduces presynaptic μ opioid receptors but paradoxically potentiates the analgesic efficacy of μ ...opioid agonists. In this study, we determined if removal of TRPV1-expressing afferent neurons by resiniferatoxin (RTX), an ultrapotent capsaicin analog, influences the development of opioid analgesic tolerance. Morphine tolerance was induced by daily intrathecal injections of 10 μg of morphine for 14 consecutive days or by daily i.p. injections of 10 mg/kg of morphine for 10 days. In vehicle-treated rats, the effect of intrathecal or systemic morphine on the mechanical withdrawal threshold was gradually diminished within 7 days. However, the analgesic effect of intrathecal and systemic morphine was sustained in RTX-treated rats at the time the morphine effect was lost in the vehicle group. Furthermore, the μ opioid receptor-G protein coupling in the spinal cord was significantly decreased (∼22%) in vehicle-treated morphine tolerant rats, but was not significantly altered in RTX-treated rats receiving the same treatment with morphine. Additionally, there was a large reduction in protein kinase Cγ-immunoreactive afferent terminals in the spinal dorsal horn of RTX-treated rats. These findings suggest that loss of TRPV1-expressing sensory neurons attenuates the development of morphine analgesic tolerance possibly by reducing μ opioid receptor desensitization through protein kinase Cγ in the spinal cord. These data also suggest that the function of presynaptic μ opioid receptors on TRPV1-expressing sensory neurons is particularly sensitive to down-regulation by μ opioid agonists during opioid tolerance development.

We present our study on the spatially resolved H and M* relation for 536 star-forming and 424 quiescent galaxies taken from the MaNGA survey. We show that the star formation rate surface density ( ), ...derived based on the H emissions, is strongly correlated with the M* surface density ( ) on kiloparsec scales for star-forming galaxies and can be directly connected to the global star-forming sequence. This suggests that the global main sequence may be a consequence of a more fundamental relation on small scales. On the other hand, our result suggests that ∼20% of quiescent galaxies in our sample still have star formation activities in the outer region with lower specific star formation rate (SSFR) than typical star-forming galaxies. Meanwhile, we also find a tight correlation between and for LI(N)ER regions, named the resolved "LI(N)ER" sequence, in quiescent galaxies, which is consistent with the scenario that LI(N)ER emissions are primarily powered by the hot, evolved stars as suggested in the literature.

We use integral field spectroscopy from the PHANGS–MUSE survey, which resolves the ionised interstellar medium structure at ∼50 pc resolution in 19 nearby spiral galaxies, to study the origin of the ...diffuse ionised gas (DIG). We examine the physical conditions of the diffuse gas by first removing morphologically defined H

regions and then binning the low-surface-brightness areas to achieve significant detections of the key nebular lines in the DIG. A simple model for the leakage and propagation of ionising radiation from H
II
regions is able to reproduce the observed distribution of H
α
in the DIG. This model infers a typical mean free path for the ionising radiation of 1.9 kpc for photons propagating within the disc plane. Leaking radiation from H
II
regions also explains the observed decrease in line ratios of low-ionisation species (S
II

α

) with increasing H
α
surface brightness (Σ

α
). Emission from hot low-mass evolved stars, however, is required to explain: (1) the enhanced low-ionisation line ratios observed in the central regions of some of the galaxies in our sample; (2) the observed trends of a flat or decreasing O

; and (3) the offset of some DIG regions from the typical locus of H
II
regions in the Baldwin–Phillips–Terlevich (BPT) diagram, extending into the area of low-ionisation (nuclear) emission-line regions (LINERs). Hot low-mass evolved stars make a small contribution to the energy budget of the DIG (2% of the galaxy-integrated H
α
emission), but their harder spectra make them fundamental contributors to O
III
emission. The DIG might result from a superposition of two components, an energetically dominant contribution from young stars and a more diffuse background of harder ionising photons from old stars. This unified framework bridges observations of the Milky Way DIG with LI(N)ER-like emission observed in nearby galaxy bulges.

Both endoscopic obturation and transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunts (TIPSs) have proven to be effective in preventing rebleeding from gastric varices. This study compared the efficacy and ...complications of these modalities.
Cirrhotic patients with acute bleeding from gastric varices were considered for inclusion. After initial control, eligible patients were randomly allocated to two groups: TIPS (n = 35) and obturation using cyanoacrylate (n = 37). In the cyanoacrylate group, treatment was repeated regularly until gastric varices were obliterated. Patients of both groups received regular follow-up. The end points were gastric variceal rebleeding or death.
Stent shunt insertion was successful in all TIPS patients, and mean portal pressure gradient decreased from 21.4 +/- 7.5 mm Hg to 7.5 +/- 3.5 mm Hg ( P < 0.001). Variceal obliteration was achieved in 19 patients in the cyanoacrylate group (51 %) compared with seven TIPS patients (20 %) ( P < 0.02). After a median follow up of 33 months, upper gastrointestinal bleeding occurred in 15 TIPS patients (43 %) and 22 cyanoacrylate patients (59 %) ( P = 0.12). Rebleeding from gastric varices was encountered in four TIPS patients (11 %) and 14 cyanoacrylate patients (38 %) ( P = 0.014; odds ratio 3.6, 95 %CI 1.2 - 11.1). Blood transfusion requirements were lower in the TIPS group than in the cyanoacrylate group ( P < 0.01). Survival and frequency of complications were similar in both groups.
TIPS proved more effective than glue injection in preventing rebleeding from gastric varices, with similar survival and frequency of complications.
Properties of many layered materials, including copper- and iron-based superconductors, topological insulators, graphite and epitaxial graphene, can be manipulated by the inclusion of different ...atomic and molecular species between the layers via a process known as intercalation. For example, intercalation in graphite can lead to superconductivity and is crucial in the working cycle of modern batteries and supercapacitors. Intercalation involves complex diffusion processes along and across the layers; however, the microscopic mechanisms and dynamics of these processes are not well understood. Here we report on a novel mechanism for intercalation and entrapment of alkali atoms under epitaxial graphene. We find that the intercalation is adjusted by the van der Waals interaction, with the dynamics governed by defects anchored to graphene wrinkles. Our findings are relevant for the future design and application of graphene-based nano-structures. Similar mechanisms can also have a role for intercalation of layered materials.
