We report the thermal and spectroscopic analysis of the carbon nanotubes (CNTs)-doped nematic liquid crystal (NLC) material. The CNTs have been oriented in the p-ethoxybenzylidene p-butylaniline NLC. ...The thermal study of the CNTs doped nematic mixtures shows a significant decrease in the isotropic to nematic phase transition temperature. However higher doping concentration of CNTs has led to the further increase in transition temperature. The UV-Visible spectroscopy has been attempted on the CNTs/NLC mixtures at room temperature. The investigated NLC present one absorption band corresponding to π-π* electronic transition. A red shift of λ
max
with the increasing concentration of CNTs in the mixture has been observed. The band gap of NLC has been found to decrease after the doping of CNTs. The absorbance was measured for the UV light, polarized parallel and perpendicular to the LC director in the planar aligned cell.

To report and compare clinical and pathological features of hydrophilic acrylic intraocular lenses (IOLs) of three major designs, explanted from patients who had visual disturbances caused by ...opacification of the lens optic.
Eighty-seven hydrophilic acrylic IOLs (25 Hydroview, 54 SC60B-OUV, and 8 Aqua-Sense lenses) were explanted and sent to our center. Most patients became symptomatic during the second year after cataract surgery. A fine granularity was observed on the surface of the lens optic in the case of Hydroview. With the SC60B-OUV and Aqua-Sense lenses, the opacity resembled a nuclear cataract. Gross examination, light microscopy and staining with alizarin red and the von Kossa method (for calcium) were performed. Some lenses were submitted for scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS).
Light microscopic and SEM analyses revealed the presence of irregular granular deposits on the external optical surfaces of Hydroview lenses. With the SC60B-OUV lenses, the opacity was caused by the presence of multiple fine, granular deposits within the lens optic, distributed in a line parallel to the anterior and posterior curvatures of the optic, with a clear zone just beneath its external surfaces. The Aqua-Sense lenses exhibited both patterns simultaneously. The deposits in all cases stained positive with alizarin red and von Kossa method. EDS also demonstrated the presence of calcium and phosphates within the deposits.
Differences in the water content of the hydrophilic acrylic materials used in the manufacture of these three lens designs may be responsible for the different patterns of calcium precipitation. Careful clinical follow up of patients implanted with these lenses is necessary to determine if this phenomenon is rare and sporadic or may be more widespread.

Dye sensitized solar cell (DSSC) mimics the principle of natural photosynthesis are now currently investigated due to low manufacturing cost as compared to silicon based solar cells. In this report, ...we utilized Piper ornatum (PO) and Piper betle (PB) as sensitizer to fabricate low cost DSSCs. We compared the photovoltaic performance of both sensitizers with Titanium dioxide (TiO2) and Tin dioxide (SnO2) semiconductors. The results show that PO and PB dyes have higher Short circuit current (Jsc) when applied in SnO2 compared to standard TiO2 photo-anode film even though the Open circuit voltage (Voc) was hampered on SnO2 device. In conclusion, from the result, higher electron injections can be achieved by choosing appropriate semiconductors with band gap that match with dyes energy level as one of strategy for further low cost solar cell.
Abstract
We investigate the prompt emission and the afterglow properties of short-duration gamma-ray burst (sGRB) 130603B and another eight sGRB events during 2012–2015, observed by several ...multiwavelength facilities including the Gran Canarias Telescope 10.4 m telescope. Prompt emission high energy data of the events were obtained by INTEGRAL-SPI-ACS, Swift-BAT, and Fermi-GBM satellites. The prompt emission data by INTEGRAL in the energy range of 0.1–10 MeV for sGRB 130603B, sGRB 140606A, sGRB 140930B, sGRB 141212A, and sGRB 151228A do not show any signature of the extended emission or precursor activity and their spectral and temporal properties are similar to those seen in case of other short bursts. For sGRB 130603B, our new afterglow photometric data constrain the pre-jet-break temporal decay due to denser temporal coverage. For sGRB 130603B, the afterglow light curve, containing both our new and previously published photometric data is broadly consistent with the ISM afterglow model. Modeling of the host galaxies of sGRB 130603B and sGRB 141212A using the LePHARE software supports a scenario in which the environment of the burst is undergoing moderate star formation activity. From the inclusion of our late-time data for eight other sGRBs we are able to: place tight constraints on the non-detection of the afterglow, host galaxy, or any underlying ‘kilonova’ emission. Our late-time afterglow observations of the sGRB 170817A/GW170817 are also discussed and compared with the sub-set of sGRBs.
Ion conducting polymer electrolyte, poly(N-methyl 4-vinylpyridine iodide) (PVPI) is synthesized for dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) application. A new solid polymer electrolyte composite containing ...low viscosity ionic liquid (IL) 1-ethyl 3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide (EMImDCN) doped PVPI is developed and its structural, electrical and photoelectrochemical studies are presented in detail. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, proton NMR and atomic force microscopy (AFM) affirms the modified polymer and its composite nature with porous surface morphology. The developed solid polymer electrolyte shows enhancement in ionic conductivity (

An ordered arrangement of electron-accepting molecular dopant, 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (F4TCNQ), in three-dimensionally (3D) oriented poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) film ...was clarified. The 3D oriented P3HT thin films prepared by the friction-transfer technique were doped with F4TCNQ by dipping into an acetonitrile solution. The presence of F4TCNQ anions in the 3D oriented P3HT thin films was investigated by polarized ultraviolet/visible/near-infrared absorption spectroscopy, grazing incidence X-ray diffractometry, polarized Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and infrared p-polarized multiple-angle incidence resolution spectroscopy (pMAIRS). The F4TCNQ-doped 3D oriented P3HT films showed anisotropic properties in all characterizations. In particular, the anisotropic molecular vibrations from polarized FT-IR and pMAIRS have clearly revealed orientations of polymeric chains and molecular dopant molecules. Considering the results from several independent techniques indicated that F4TCNQ anions in the 3D oriented P3HT were orderly arranged in a 3D manner with respect to the 3D oriented P3HT such that their molecular long-axis parallel to the P3HT backbone, with in-plane molecular orientation. Additionally, the direction of the optical transition moment of the F4TCNQ anion was found to be parallel to the molecular short-axis.

Notoriously chemoresistant melanoma has become the most prevalent form of cancer for the 25–29 North American age demographic. Standard treatment after early detection involves surgical excision ...(recurrence is possible), and metastatic melanoma is refractory to immuno-, radio-, and most harmful chemotherapies. Various natural compounds have shown efficacy in killing different cancers, albeit not always specifically. In this study, we show that dandelion root extract (DRE) specifically and effectively induces apoptosis in human melanoma cells without inducing toxicity in noncancerous cells. Characteristic apoptotic morphology of nuclear condensation and phosphatidylserine flipping to the outer leaflet of the plasma membrane of A375 human melanoma cells was observed within 48 hours. DRE-induced apoptosis activates caspase-8 in A375 cells early on, demonstrating employment of an extrinsic apoptotic pathway to kill A375 cells. Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) generated from DRE-treated isolated mitochondria indicates that natural compounds in DRE can also directly target mitochondria. Interestingly, the relatively resistant G361 human melanoma cell line responded to DRE when combined with the metabolism interfering antitype II diabetic drug metformin. Therefore, treatment with this common, yet potent extract of natural compounds has proven novel in specifically inducing apoptosis in chemoresistant melanoma, without toxicity to healthy cells.

Ultrasonic welding is used as an effective method for the welding of thin films in medical plastics for pills to the packing of medical devices. It provides the device with high adherence to sustain ...in the working environment. Despite being one of the most acceptable methods to fuse the materials in the medical field, it's few limitations can cause a great impact on the quality of the product. The paper deals with the problem faced by a company named "Ayu Devices Pvt Ltd." which manufactures Electronic Stethoscopes. The device case was welded using the ultrasonic welding process, but because of the frequency conveyed on different electronic components, it led to the rejection of the devices in the quality check-up. Since the rejection rate raised to an approximation of 45% at the quality check-up, there was a need to find an alternate method in a similar device case. The adhesive bonding technique using cyanoacrylate is adopted for further manufacturing of the device. A fair comparison is made based on the bond strength delivered and the rejection percentage due to electronic components failure by both the methods.
Heat extraction from the geothermal reservoir is sensitive to reservoir properties, operating parameters and coupling among various processes. Due to complex reservoir structure, heat extraction ...performances and flow field behaviour in geothermal reservoirs are very different than the small scale laboratory model experiments. In recent past, significant progress in reservoir scale numerical modeling has been made for quantification of challenges in geothermal energy system development. In this paper, a comprehensive review of state of the art geothermal reservoir modeling for heat extraction is presented. Various numerical tools and approaches such as the finite difference method, finite element method, finite volume method, etc. to model the geothermal reservoir in the last four decades are discussed. The thrust of this paper is on a critical review of individual evaluation of coupling among all possible processes that are thermo, hydro, mechanical, and chemical processes on heat extraction performance. Future directions in developing better understanding on geothermal reservoir systems are proposed.

Dye-sensitized thin film hybrid solar cells (DS thin film solar cell) were fabricated by one-pot process using solution processable zinc oxide (ZnO) precursor as electron acceptor, ...ester-functionalized polythiophene copolymer as donor and a squaraine dye. Incorporation of slight amount of ester functionality (6%) in the regioregular poly-3-hexylthiophene (P3HT) main chain leads to enhancement in the photoconversion efficiency of the ester functionalized polymer (P3HT-E) from 0.8% to about 1% (AM1.5, 100mw/cm2). Photocurrent associated with both of the P3HT-E (400–650nm) and the squaraine dye (650–750nm) were observed in incident photon to current efficiency curve of the DS thin film solar cell. This proves that the ZnO/dye/P3HT-E interface could be fabricated by one-pot coating process from ternary mixture based on a ZnO precursor.
•Single step and one pot fabrication of dye-sensitized polymer-ZnO hybrid solar cells.•In situ generation of ZnO using its diethyl zinc precursor.•Enhanced photovoltaic performance by introduction of ester functionalized polymers.•Demonstration of far-red photon harvesting by polymer-dye-ZnO ternary blend.
