We present herein a case report of sigmoidorectal intussusception as an unusual case of sigmoid adenomatous polyp. The patient was a 56-year-old man who suffered from rectal bleeding for one day. He ...initially visited his general practitioner and was diagnosed as having an intraluminal mass of 15 cm from the anal verge. Several hours after admission to our coloproctology clinic, he suddenly presented with lower abdominal cramping pain with rectal bleeding during his bowel preparation using polyethylene glycol electrolyte solution. An emergency colonoscopy revealed that the invaginated colon with polypoid mass was protruded to the lower rectum. Gastrograffin enema showed that the invaginated bowel segment was 3 cm from the anal verge. CT scan showed the typical finding of intussusception. We performed laparoscopic anterior resection and anastomosis after the sponge-on-the-stick-assisted manual reduction. The permanent pathologic finding showed villotubular adenoma of the sigmoid colon.
The TECTA gene, which encodes alpha-tectorin, is known as a causative gene for DFNA8/DFNA12, and DFNB21 hearing loss in humans. In the present study, mutation analysis of the TECTA gene was performed ...in 62 Korean patients with hereditary hearing loss. Two novel nucleotide substitutions, p.V317E and p.T1866M, were identified for the first time in the Korean population. These mutations result in the substitution of amino acids in the zonadhesin (ZA) and the zona pellucida (ZP) domains, and show a genotype-phenotype correlation, which is a characteristic of TECTA-related mutations in autosomal dominant nonsyndromic hearing loss. Both mutations are located in highly conserved regions of alpha-tectorin and were not found in 120 unrelated control subjects with normal hearing. Based on this evidence, it is likely that both mutations are the pathogenic ones causing the hearing loss. This study provides useful information for the functional study of hereditary hearing loss caused by tectorial membrane defects.

The expression of HO-1 protein by ALE was reduced by pretreatment with LY83583 and ODQ, specific inhibitors of guanylate cyclase, but not by PKA inhibitors, H89 and KT5720, indicating that PKG signaling pathway regulates HO-1 induction by ALE. To assess the efficacy of eyelid splitting coupled with follicular extirpation via monopolar cautery in the treatment of trichiasis and distichiasis.
Between March 2000 and October 2003, this surgery ...was performed on 52 eyelids from 45 patients, with a mean follow-up period of 14.3 months (ranging from 12.3 to 17.6 months) . Under local anesthesia and a surgical microscope, a chalazion clamp is positioned on the eyelid, and a no. 11 scalpel is employed to make an incision located immediately anterior and parallel to the abnormal eyelash line. Each of the abnormal hair follicles is then removed via cautery with a monopolar needle. No sutures are involved in this procedure.
Forty-four eyelids of 40 patients (84.6%) were successfully treated without recurrence or any residual symptoms. Repeat surgery was then performed on eight eyelids, with successful results in six cases. The cumulative success rate for this procedure was 96.1%. No complications were noted in the treated area, including lid deformities, granuloma formation, infections, and others.
Eyelid splitting coupled with follicular extirpation via cautery with a monopolar needle, a procedure which requires no sutures, constitutes a simple and effective method for the treatment of both trichiasis and distichiasis and is associated with favorable functional and cosmetic results.

As an effective alternative to simple binary oxide chemiresistors, polynary oxides with excellent tunability of the composition and hetero-interfaces are considered as promising material platforms ...for designing highly selective and sensitive gas sensors. In this study, ternary spinel CoCr 2 O 4 hollow spheres and CoCr 2 O 4 –Cr 2 O 3 mixed oxide hollow spheres were prepared via one-pot ultrasonic spray pyrolysis using solutions with different cation compositions ( i.e. , Cr/Co = 2, 3, and 4), and their gas-sensing characteristics were investigated. The pure CoCr 2 O 4 hollow spheres exhibited an unusually high response to 5 parts per million (ppm) of p -xylene (ratio of resistance to gas and air = 61.4), with negligible cross-responses to 5 ppm of ethanol, toluene, benzene, trimethylamine, ammonia, formaldehyde, and carbon monoxide. When CoCr 2 O 4 –Cr 2 O 3 hollow spheres with discrete Cr 2 O 3 nanoclusters were formed using a spray solution with a Cr/Co ratio of 3, the xylene response was enhanced to 144.1, which allows the sensitive and selective detection of sub-ppm level p -xylene. The unprecedentedly high xylene selectivity and response in the present study are explained by the gas-accessible hollow morphology, the unique catalytic activity of the ternary and mixed oxides, and the enhanced chemiresistivity due to the formation of a heterojunction between CoCr 2 O 4 and Cr 2 O 3 . The novel ternary oxide-based gas sensors with excellent xylene-sensing performance can be used in indoor air-monitoring applications.

Sustained activation of NF-kappaB is one of the causative factors for various liver diseases, including liver inflammation and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). It has been known that activating the ...NF-kappaB signal by hepatitis B virus X protein (HBx) is implicated in the development of HCC. However, despite numerous studies on HBx-induced NF-kappaB activation, the detailed mechanisms still remain unsolved. Recently, p22-FLIP, a cleavage product of c-FLIP.sub.L, has been reported to induce NF-kappaB activation through interaction with the IkappaB kinase (IKK) complex in primary immune cells. Since our previous report on the interaction of HBx with c-FLIP.sub.L, we explored whether p22-FLIP is involved in the modulation of HBx function. First, we identified the expression of endogenous p22-FLIP in liver cells. NF-kappaB reporter assay and electrophoretic mobility shift assay (EMSA) revealed that the expression of p22-FLIP synergistically enhances HBx-induced NF-kappaB activation. Moreover, we found that HBx physically interacts with p22-FLIP and NEMO and potentially forms a ternary complex. Knock-down of c-FLIP leading to the downregulation of p22-FLIP showed that endogenous p22-FLIP is involved in HBx-induced NF-kappaB activation, and the formation of a ternary complex is necessary to activate NF-kappaB signaling. In conclusion, we showed a novel mechanism of HBx-induced NF-kappaB activation in which ternary complex formation is involved among HBx, p22-FLIP and NEMO. Our findings will extend the understanding of HBx-induced NF-kappaB activation and provide a new target for intervention in HBV-associated liver diseases and in the development of HCC.
