The complex conductivity of soils remains poorly known despite the growing importance of this method in hydrogeophysics. In order to fill this gap of knowledge, we investigate the complex ...conductivity of 71 soils samples (including four peat samples) and one clean sand in the frequency range 0.1 Hz to 45 kHz. The soil samples are saturated with six different NaCl brines with conductivities (0.031, 0.53, 1.15, 5.7, 14.7, and 22 S m−1, NaCl, 25°C) in order to determine their intrinsic formation factor and surface conductivity. This data set is used to test the predictions of the dynamic Stern polarization model of porous media in terms of relationship between the quadrature conductivity and the surface conductivity. We also investigate the relationship between the normalized chargeability (the difference of in‐phase conductivity between two frequencies) and the quadrature conductivity at the geometric mean frequency. This data set confirms the relationships between the surface conductivity, the quadrature conductivity, and the normalized chargeability. The normalized chargeability depends linearly on the cation exchange capacity and specific surface area while the chargeability shows no dependence on these parameters. These new data and the dynamic Stern layer polarization model are observed to be mutually consistent. Traditionally, in hydrogeophysics, surface conductivity is neglected in the analysis of resistivity data. The relationships we have developed can be used in field conditions to avoid neglecting surface conductivity in the interpretation of DC resistivity tomograms. We also investigate the effects of temperature and saturation and, here again, the dynamic Stern layer predictions and the experimental observations are mutually consistent.

Geophysical methods are increasingly popular in agriculture. Usually, DC (DIrect Current) resistivity is the preferred method but the interpretation of resistivity data suffers a major flaw: the inability to distinguish between bulk and surface conductivity. This has yield to unrealistc interpretation schemes in hydrogeophysics and an abuse of Archie's law. We propose a way to cure this flaw by extending the DC resistivity method to what is called induced polarization. This paper is the first work entirely focused on the study of induced polarization of soils including a comparison with a mechanistic model and a study of the influence of both temperature and saturation.

This paper considers the impact of tidal forcing on regional groundwater flow in an unconfined coastal aquifer. Numerical models are used to quantify this impact for a wide range of hydrogeological conditions. Both a shallow and a deep aquifer are investigated with regard to three dimensionless parameter groups that determine the groundwater flow to a large extent. Analytical expressions are presented that allow for a quick estimate of the regional scale effect of tidal forcing under the same conditions as used in the numerical models.
Quantitatively, the results in this paper are complementary to previous studies by taking into account variable density groundwater flow, dispersive salt transport and a seepage face in the intertidal area. Qualitatively, the results are in line with previous investigations. The time-averaged hydraulic head at the high tide mark increases upon a decrease of each of the three considered dimensionless parameter groups: R (including the ratio of the hydraulic conductivity and the precipitation excess), α (the slope of the intertidal area) and AL (the ratio of the width of the fresh water lens and the tidal amplitude). The relative change of the location and the hydraulic head of the groundwater divide, which together characterize regional groundwater flow, increase as α and AL decrease, but decrease as R decreases. The difference between the analytical solutions and numerical results is small. Therefore, the presented analytical solutions can be used to estimate the bias that is introduced in a numerical model if tidal forcing is neglected. The results should be used with caution in case of significant wave forcing, as this was not considered.

Novel lower-limb prostheses aim to improve the quality of locomotion of individuals with an amputation. This study evaluates the biomechanics of a novel bionic foot during walking.
Able-bodied ...individuals (n = 7) and individuals with a transfemoral (n = 6) or transtibial amputation (n = 6) were included. Able-bodied individuals conducted one experimental trial, whereas individuals with transtibial and transfemoral amputations conducted a familiarization (with current prosthesis) and two experimental trials using a passive and bionic prosthesis. Each trial consisted of 3 bouts of 2 min of treadmill walking at different speeds. Biomechanical data were gathered using a force platform and motion capture system and analysed using Statistical Parametric Mapping and (non)-parametric tests.
Conventional prosthetic feet alter gait patterns and induce locomotion difficulties. While walking at a normal speed with the passive prosthesis, transtibial amputees display reduced maximum heel forces, increased ankle and trunk angular velocities at midstance, and increased knee angle during stance and swing phases on their effected side (P ≤ 0.026). Improved lower-limb kinematics was demonstrated during slow and normal speed walking with the bionic prosthesis; however, dynamic trunk stability was negatively impacted during this condition. The bionic prosthesis did not benefit transfemoral amputees at any walking speed.
Transtibial amputees can better approximate typical movement patterns at slow and normal walking speeds using the novel bionic prosthesis; however the same benefit was not observed in transfemoral amputees.
•The novel propulsive bionic foot contains springs and a smart locking mechanism.•Transtibial amputees mimic able-bodied walking when walking with the bionic foot.•Transfemoral amputees do not benefit from walking with the novel prosthesis.•Further development of the bionic foot is crucial to achieve a market-proof product.

Groundwater‐surface water (GW‐SW) interaction in numerical groundwater flow models is generally simulated using a Cauchy boundary condition, which relates the flow between the surface water and the ...groundwater to the product of the head difference between the node and the surface water level, and a coefficient, often referred to as the “conductance.” Previous studies have shown that in models with a low grid resolution, the resistance to GW‐SW interaction below the surface water bed should often be accounted for in the parameterization of the conductance, in addition to the resistance across the surface water bed. Three conductance expressions that take this resistance into account were investigated: two that were presented by Mehl and Hill (2010) and the one that was presented by De Lange (1999). Their accuracy in low‐resolution models regarding salt and water fluxes to a dense drainage network in a confined aquifer system was determined. For a wide range of hydrogeological conditions, the influence of (1) variable groundwater density; (2) vertical grid discretization; and (3) simulation of both ditches and tile drains in a single model cell was investigated. The results indicate that the conductance expression of De Lange (1999) should be used in similar hydrogeological conditions as considered in this paper, as it is better taking into account the resistance to flow below the surface water bed. For the cases that were considered, the influence of variable groundwater density and vertical grid discretization on the accuracy of the conductance expression of De Lange (1999) is small.

The accuracy of genomic predictions can be used to assess the utility of dense marker genotypes for genetic improvement of beef efficiency traits. This study was designed to test the impact of ...genomic distance between training and validation populations, training population size, statistical methods, and density of genetic markers on prediction accuracy for feed efficiency traits in multibreed and crossbred beef cattle. A total of 6,794 beef cattle data collated from various projects and research herds across Canada were used. Illumina BovineSNP50 (50K) and imputed Axiom Genome-Wide BOS 1 Array (HD) genotypes were available for all animals. The traits studied were DMI, ADG, and residual feed intake (RFI). Four validation groups of 150 animals each, including Angus (AN), Charolais (CH), Angus-Hereford crosses (ANHH), and a Charolais-based composite (TX) were created by considering the genomic distance between pairs of individuals in the validation groups. Each validation group had 7 corresponding training groups of increasing sizes ( = 1,000, 1,999, 2,999, 3,999, 4,999, 5,998, and 6,644), which also represent increasing average genomic distance between pairs of individuals in the training and validations groups. Prediction of genomic estimated breeding values (GEBV) was performed using genomic best linear unbiased prediction (GBLUP) and Bayesian method C (BayesC). The accuracy of genomic predictions was defined as the Pearson's correlation between adjusted phenotype and GEBV (), unless otherwise stated. Using 50K genotypes, the highest average achieved in purebreds (AN, CH) was 0.41 for DMI, 0.34 for ADG, and 0.35 for RFI, whereas in crossbreds (ANHH, TX) it was 0.38 for DMI, 0.21 for ADG, and 0.25 for RFI. Similarly, when imputed HD genotypes were applied in purebreds (AN, CH), the highest average was 0.14 for DMI, 0.15 for ADG, and 0.14 for RFI, whereas in crossbreds (ANHH, TX) it was 0.38 for DMI, 0.22 for ADG, and 0.24 for RFI. The of GBLUP predictions were greatly reduced with increasing genomic average distance compared to those from BayesC predictions. The results indicate that 50K genotypes, used with BayesC, are more effective for predicting GEBV in purebred cattle. Imputed HD genotypes found utility when dealing with composites and crossbreds. Formulation of a fairly large training set for genomic predictions in beef cattle should consider the genomic distance between the training and target populations.
The objective of this paper is to determine spectral bands that are best suited for characterizing agricultural crop biophysical variables. The data for this study comes from ground-level ...hyperspectral reflectance measurements of cotton, potato, soybeans, corn, and sunflower. Reflectance was measured in 490 discrete narrow bands between 350 and 1,050 nm. Observed crop characteristics included wet biomass, leaf area index, plant height, and (for cotton only) yield. Three types of hyperspectral predictors were tested: optimum multiple narrow band reflectance (OMNBR), narrow band normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) involving all possible two-band combinations of 490 channels, and the soil-adjusted vegetation indices. A critical problem with OMNBR models was that of “over fitting” (i.e., using more spectral channels than experimental samples to obtain a highly maximum

value). This problem was addressed by comparing the
R
2
values of crop variables with the
R
2
values computed for random data of a large sample size. The combinations of two to four narrow bands in OMNBR models explained most (64% to 92%) of the variability in crop biophysical variables. The second part of the paper describes a rigorous search procedure to identify the best narrow band NDVI predictors of crop biophysical variables. Special narrow band lambda (λ

2) for predicting the biophysical quantities of each crop. The best of these two-band indices were further tested to see if soil adjustment or nonlinear fitting could improve their predictive accuracy. The best of the narrow band NDVI models explained 64% to 88% variability in different crop biophysical variables. A strong relationship with crop characteristics is located in specific narrow bands in the longer wavelength portion of the red (650 nm to 700 nm), with secondary clusters in the shorter wavelength portion of green (500 nm to 550 nm), in one particular section of the near-infrared (900 nm to 940 nm), and in the moisture sensitive near-infrared (centered at 982 nm). This study recommends a 12 narrow band sensor, in the 350 nm to 1,050 nm range of the spectrum, for optimum estimation of agricultural crop biophysical information.

Submarine groundwater discharge is an important part of the hydrological cycle, but remains under-investigated for confined aquifers with no surface outcrop at the beach. This paper considers the offshore directed flow of fresh groundwater in the unconfined and confined aquifers along the coast of the Western Netherlands. Salinity patterns based on hydrological, geological, and geophysical field data are presented in five shore-normal hydrogeological cross-sections, extending from the beach to 4km inland. The offshore continuation of the fresh groundwater is discussed using analytical models and cone penetration tests (CPTs) performed at the beach. All CPTs taken around the low water line of the intertidal zone reveal that changes from saline to fresh groundwater are always associated with a low-permeable layer. Such a low-permeable layer, which can be as thin as a few decimetres, may form the confining layer between the unconfined and confined aquifers, or can occur within of the unconfined aquifer. Due to its high vertical resolution, a CPT is an effective method to detect these variations in salinity and lithology. At each of the investigated locations, freshwater was present in the confined aquifer. Assuming that this fresh groundwater is part of an active flow system, the submarine freshwater tongue is estimated to extend at least a few hundred meters offshore, based on analytical model calculations. Hydrochemical data from an old offshore borehole, however, suggest this may be an underestimate and that the submarine freshwater tongue originates from former times when the coastline was located further westward than nowadays.

OBJECTIVES
The goal of this study was to evaluate the effect of preconditioning on out-of-hospital ventricular fibrillation (VF) in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI).
BACKGROUND
More ...than half of the deaths associated with AMI occur out of the hospital and within 1 h of symptom onset. In humans, preinfarction angina (PA), which can serve as a surrogate marker for preconditioning, reduces infarct size, but the protective effect against out-of-hospital VF has not been investigated.
METHODS
Preinfarction angina status and acute coronary angiographic findings of 72 consecutive patients with AMI complicated by out-of-hospital VF were compared with 144 matched controls without this complication.
RESULTS
Preinfarction angina is associated with a lower risk for VF (odds ratio OR: 0.40, 95% confidence interval CI: 0.18 to 0.88). In patients with acute occlusion of the left coronary artery (LCA) (n = 136), the risk reduction is pronounced (OR: 0.25, 95% CI: 0.10 to 0.66), whereas, in patients with acute occlusion of the right coronary artery (RCA) (n = 67), the protective effect of PA on VF was not observed (OR: 2.25, 95% CI: 0.45 to 11.22). Subgroup and multivariate analyses show that the protective effect is independent of cardiovascular risk factors, preinfarction treatment with beta-adrenergic blocking agents or aspirin, the presence of collaterals or residual antegrade flow or the extent of coronary artery disease.
CONCLUSIONS
Preinfarction angina protects against out-of-hospital VF in patients with acute occlusion of the LCA. This protection is independent of risk factors or coronary anatomy. A larger study is needed to examine the apparently different effect in patients with acute occlusion of the RCA.
