Three-dimensional (3D) topological Dirac semimetals (TDSs) are a recently proposed state of quantum matter that have attracted increasing attention in physics and materials science. A 3D TDS is not ...only a bulk analogue of graphene; it also exhibits non-trivial topology in its electronic structure that shares similarities with topological insulators. Moreover, a TDS can potentially be driven into other exotic phases (such as Weyl semimetals, axion insulators and topological superconductors), making it a unique parent compound for the study of these states and the phase transitions between them. Here, by performing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we directly observe a pair of 3D Dirac fermions in Cd3As2, proving that it is a model 3D TDS. Compared with other 3D TDSs, for example, β-cristobalite BiO2 (ref. 3) and Na3Bi (refs 4, 5), Cd3As2 is stable and has much higher Fermi velocities. Furthermore, by in situ doping we have been able to tune its Fermi energy, making it a flexible platform for exploring exotic physical phenomena.

Topological Weyl semimetals (TWSs) represent a novel state of topological quantum matter which not only possesses Weyl fermions (massless chiral particles that can be viewed as magnetic monopoles in ...momentum space) in the bulk and unique Fermi arcs generated by topological surface states, but also exhibits appealing physical properties such as extremely large magnetoresistance and ultra-high carrier mobility. Here, by performing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on NbP and TaP, we directly observed their band structures with characteristic Fermi arcs of TWSs. Furthermore, by systematically investigating NbP, TaP and TaAs from the same transition metal monopnictide family, we discovered their Fermiology evolution with spin-orbit coupling (SOC) strength. Our experimental findings not only reveal the mechanism to realize and fine-tune the electronic structures of TWSs, but also provide a rich material base for exploring many exotic physical phenomena (for example, chiral magnetic effects, negative magnetoresistance, and the quantum anomalous Hall effect) and novel future applications.

Three-dimensional (3D) topologicalWeyl semimetals (TWSs) represent a state of quantum matter with unusual electronic structures that resemble both a '3D graphene' and a topological insulator. Their ...electronic structure displays pairs of Weyl points (through which the electronic bands disperse linearly along all three momentum directions) connected by topological surface states, forming a unique arc-like Fermi surface (FS). Each Weyl point is chiral and contains half the degrees of freedom of a Dirac point, and can be viewed as a magnetic monopole in momentum space. By performing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on the non-centrosymmetric compound TaAs, here we report its complete band structure, including the unique Fermi-arc FS and linear bulk band dispersion across the Weyl points, in agreement with the theoretical calculations1, 2. This discovery not only confirms TaAs as a 3DTWS, but also provides an ideal platform for realizing exotic physical phenomena (for example, negative magnetoresistance, chiral magnetic effects and the quantum anomalous Hall effect) which may also lead to novel future applications.

For rolling bearing fault detection, it is expected that a desired time–frequency analysis method should have good computation efficiency, and have good resolution in both time domain and frequency ...domain. As the best available time–frequency method so far, the wavelet transform still cannot fulfill the rolling bearing fault detection task very well since it has some inevitable deficiencies. The recent popular time–frequency analysis method, Hilbert–Huang transform (HHT), has good computation efficiency and does not involve the concept of the frequency resolution and the time resolution. So the HHT seems to have potential to become a perfect tool for rolling bearing fault detection. However, in practical applications, the HHT also suffers from some unsolved deficiencies. To ameliorate these deficiencies, by seeking help from the wavelet packet transform (WPT) and a simple but effective method for intrinsic mode function (IMF) selection, an improved HHT is put forward in this studying. Several numerical study cases will be used to validate the capabilities of the improved HHT. Finally, the improved HHT's performance in rolling bearing fault detection is compared with that of the wavelet based scalogram through experimental case studies. The comparison results have shown that (1) the improved HHT has better resolution both in time domain and in frequency domain than the scalogram; (2) the improved HHT has better computing efficiency than scalogram; (3) the HHT spectrum also has one unresolved and maybe inevitable deficiency—ripple phenomenon in its estimated frequency, which would mislead our analysis.

Interest in parameterized time-frequency analysis for non-stationary signal processing is increasing steadily. An important advantage of such analysis is to provide highly concentrated time-frequency ...representation with signal-dependent resolution. In this paper, a general scheme, named as general parameterized time-frequency transform (GPTF transform), is proposed for carrying out parameterized time-frequency analysis. The GPTF transform is defined by applying generalized kernel based rotation operator and shift operator. It provides the availability of a single generalized time-frequency transform for applications on signals of different natures. Furthermore, by replacing kernel function, it facilitates the implementation of various parameterized time - frequency transforms from the same standpoint. The desirable properties and the dual definition in the frequency domain of GPTF transform are also described in this paper. One of the advantages of the GPTF transform is that the generalized kernel can be customized to characterize the time - frequency signature of non-stationary signal. As different kernel formulation has bias toward the signal to be analyzed, a proper kernel is vital to the GPTF. Thus, several potential kernels are provided and discussed in this paper to develop the desired parameterized time - frequency transforms. In real applications, it is desired to identify proper kernel with respect to the considered signal. This motivates us to propose an effective method to identify the kernel for the GPTF.
The vibration generated by industrial machines always contains nonlinear and non-stationary signals. Recently, a number of new methods have been proposed to analyse these signals. One of the ...promising methods is the Hilbert–Huang Transform (HHT). The HHT is derived from the principals of empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and the Hilbert Transform. When applying the HHT, first, the EMD will decompose the acquired signal into a collection of intrinsic mode functions (IMF). The IMF is a kind of complete, adaptive and almost orthogonal representation for the analysed signal. Since the IMF is almost monocomponent, it can determine all the instantaneous frequencies from the nonlinear or non-stationary signal. Second, the local energy of each instantaneous frequency can be derived through the Hilbert Transform. Hence, the result is an energy–frequency–time distribution of the signal. Since applying the process of HHT is not computational intensive, the HHT becomes a promising method to extract the properties of nonlinear and non-stationary signal. However, after the completion of a thorough experiment, the result generated by the HHT has its deficiency. First, the EMD will generate undesirable IMFs at the low-frequency region that may cause misinterpretation to the result. Second, depends on the analysed signal, the first obtained IMF may cover too wide a frequency range such that the property of monocomponent cannot be achieved. Third, the EMD operation cannot separate signals that contain low-energy components. In this study, new techniques have been applied to improve the result of HHT. In the improved version of HHT, the wavelet packet transform (WPT) is used as preprocessing to decompose the signal into a set of narrow band signals prior to the application of EMD. With the help from WPT, each IMF derived from the EMD can truly become monocomponent. Then, a screening process is conducted to remove unrelated IMFs from the result. Both simulated and experimental vibration signals of having a rotary system with the fault of rubbing occurred have proven that the improved HHT does show the rubbing symptoms more clear and accurate than the original HHT. Hence, the improved HHT is a precise method for nonlinear and non-stationary signal analysis.

Background
The role of the fungal microbiota in digestive diseases is poorly defined, but is becoming better understood due to advances in metagenomics.
Aim
To review the gastrointestinal ...fungal microbiota and its relationship with digestive diseases.
Methods
Search of the literature using PubMed and MEDLINE databases. Subject headings including ‘fungal‐bacterial interactions’, ‘mycotoxins’, ‘immunity to fungi’, ‘fungal infection’, ‘fungal microbiota’, ‘mycobiome’ and ‘digestive diseases’ were used.
Results
The fungal microbiota is an integral part of the gastrointestinal microecosystem with up to 106 microorganisms per gram of faeces. Next‐generation sequencing of the fungal 18S rRNA gene has allowed better characterisation of the gastrointestinal mycobiome. Numerous interactions between fungi and bacteria and the complex immune response to gastrointestinal commensal or pathogenic fungi all impact on the pathophysiology of inflammatory bowel disease and other gastrointestinal inflammatory entities such as peptic ulcers. Mycotoxins generated as fungal metabolites contribute to disturbances of gastrointestinal barrier and immune functions and are associated with chronic intestinal inflammatory conditions as well as hepatocellular and oesophagogastric cancer. Systemic and gastrointestinal disease can also lead to secondary fungal infections. Fungal genomic databases and methodologies need to be further developed and will allow a much better understanding of the diversity and function of the mycobiome in gastrointestinal inflammation, tumourigenesis, liver cirrhosis and transplantation, and its alteration as a consequence of antibiotic therapy and chemotherapy.
Conclusions
The fungal microbiota and its metabolites impact gastrointestinal function and contribute to the pathogenesis of digestive diseases. Further metagenomic analyses of the gastrointestinal mycobiome in health and disease is needed.
