Aims
Genetic diversity and antimicrobial resistance of Campylobacter coli and Campylobacter jejuni were investigated along the broiler chicken production chain in central Italy.
Methods and Results
...Campylobacter sp. isolated from cloacal swabs in farms (n = 116) and from the neck skin of chilled and eviscerated carcasses at slaughter (n = 24) were identified as C. coli (n = 99) and C. jejuni (n = 41) by multiplex PCR. Characterization by single amplified fragment length polymorphism (s‐AFLP) revealed a specific genotype of Campylobacter for each farm. Minimal inhibitory concentration showed high prevalence of fluoroquinolones (70%), tetracycline (70%) and erythromycin (30%) resistance among C. coli isolates. Campylobacter jejuni isolates showed lower prevalence of fluoroquinolone (39%) and tetracycline (10%) resistance, and all isolates were susceptible to erythromycin. The S‐AFLP types of the C. coli and C. jejuni isolates were associated with their antimicrobial resistance profiles (P < 0·001).
Conclusions
The genetic diversity detected in Campylobacter isolates suggested that a specific genotype was harboured in each farm. A considerable number of C. coli isolates were resistant to erythromycin.
Significance and Impact of the Study
Campylobacter coli was detected more frequently than C. jejuni in contrast to common findings for poultry. The high prevalence of 30% resistance to erythromycin in C. coli strains isolated from poultry is worrisome, as this is the first antibiotic of choice to treat human campylobacteriosis.

Abstract
This study investigated the presence and the level of Campylobacter spp. contamination in 41 thigh samples (with skin) and 37 skinless breast samples collected at the end of slaughter (T1) ...and after 10 day period at refrigeration temperature (4°C) (T2), corresponding to their commercial shelf life. The isolates were phenotypically classified as Campylobacter spp. and successively identified by conventional multiplex PCR. The antimicrobial susceptibility of the isolates from fresh thigh and breast samples was also determined via the microdilution method (MIC) in Eucamp microtitre plates with known scalar concentrations of: gentamicin (GEN), streptomycin (ST), ciprofloxacin (CIP), tetracycline (TET), erythromycin (ERY), and nalidixic acid (NA). A greater percentage of positivity for Campylobacter spp. (P < 0.001) was observed in thighs and C.jejuni appeared to be the most common species identified at this level (P < 0.001) followed from its association with C.coli. There was a global reduction of Campylobacter spp. in both thigh and breast samples at T2 (P < 0.001) showing that the refrigeration was able to reduce Campylobacter count. The prevalence of resistance to CIP, TET, NA, and ERY was evidenced for C.jejuni and C. coli. The co (TET-NA, CIP-NA) and multiple resistant (CIP-TET-NA, CIP-TET- NA-ERY) isolates came from the thigh products. It should be highlighted the presence of Campylobacter spp. isolates resistant to ST occurred in breast samples, responsible for the ST-CIP co-resistance and ST-CIP-TE multi-resistance profiles, higher in breast than in thigh products (P > 0.001). The presence of Campylobacter isolates resistant to ST can be further investigated since it is used for therapeutic treatment of several bacterial diseases in humans

This paper is the first report about the development of a methodology for the virtual Anastylosis of elements belonging to an archaeological site, based on the 3d modeling of fragments. This research ...is the result of the cooperation between Università Roma Tre, Dipartimento di Architettura and Sovrintendenza Capitolina ai Beni Culturali; several 3D survey, modeling, information systems and archaeology experts were involved. The purpose of the research was to study the complex and stratified site of the Arch of Titus at the Circus Maximus aiming, first of all, at completing the existing traditional graphic documentation using cataloguing and survey innovative methodologies, and, secondly, at supporting new proposals for the reconstruction and Anastylosis of the Arch itself. This tested methodology whose fundamental element is the three-dimensional textured model of each fragment, can also be used in other sites and contexts.
We describe the case of a boy with moderate mental retardation associated with tall stature, obesity, macrocephaly and typical facial features, characterized by a large 'square' forehead, prominent ...supraorbital ridges, broad nasal tip, prominent lower lip and minor dental anomalies. We think that our proband is affected by Clark-Baraitser syndrome, a rare X-linked mental retardation disorder, to date described only in five male subjects. We present a more complete definition of the clinical phenotype of the syndrome with particular attention to the behavioural aspect that, in combination with the body size and the dysmorphic picture, we think is distinctive for the Clark-Baraitser syndrome. We also summarize the mild features described in female relatives of the patients, as it could disclose a possible carrier condition and be of help with genetic counselling in the families with male patients, until a molecular test is available.
A study was designed to determine if there are changes in the perception of pain when the flow rate and pressure of an injected anesthetic are precisely controlled. Fifty dentists were given ...contralateral palatal injections. One side was injected with the Wand injector, a new delivery system that uses a microprocessor and an electric motor to precisely regulate flow rate during administration. The control side was injected using a standard manual syringe, in which flow rate and pressure are operator-dependent and cannot be controlled accurately. The subjects used two subjective scales to describe their perceived pain experience. When their responses were analyzed the Wand injector was found to be two- to three-times less painful than the manual injection. The results were statistically significant (p < .001). The authors conclude that there is an optimal flow rate of anesthetic solution at which the perception of pain during an injection is minimized.
The relative roles of natural selection and accentuated genetic drift as explanations for the high frequency of more than 20 Ashkenazi Jewish disease alleles remain controversial. To test for the ...effects of a maternal bottleneck on the Ashkenazi Jewish population, we performed an extensive analysis of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) hypervariable segment 1 (HVS-1) sequence and restriction site polymorphisms in 565 Ashkenazi Jews from different parts of Europe. These patterns of variation were compared with those of five Near Eastern (n=327) and 10 host European (n=849) non-Jewish populations. Only four mtDNA haplogroups (Hgs) (defined on the basis of diagnostic coding region RFLPs and HVS-1 sequence variants) account for approximately 70% of Ashkenazi mtDNA variation. While several Ashkenazi Jewish mtDNA Hgs appear to derive from the Near East, there is also evidence for a low level of introgression from host European non-Jewish populations. HVS-1 sequence analysis revealed increased frequencies of Ashkenazi Jewish haplotypes that are rare or absent in other populations, and a reduced number of singletons in the Ashkenazi Jewish sample. These diversity patterns provide evidence for a prolonged period of low effective size in the history of the Ashkenazi population. The data best fit a model of an early bottleneck (approximately 100 generations ago), perhaps corresponding to initial migrations of ancestral Ashkenazim in the Near East or to Europe. A genetic bottleneck followed by the recent phenomenon of rapid population growth are likely to have produced the conditions that led to the high frequency of many genetic disease alleles in the Ashkenazi population.

The results of an epidemiological survey on Huntington's disease in the Lazio Region, Central Italy, and of linkage studies in a subset of families are reported. From a total of 99 ascertained ...families and 491 patients, a prevalence of 25.6 X 10(-6) was obtained, with distributions of age at onset and age at death similar to those described in the literature. No relationship with the sex of the transmitting parent was observed. Analysis of 10 chromosome 4 restriction fragment length polymorphisms in 11 families showed consistent linkage between the genetic loci D4S10, D4S43 and D4S95, and the disease. A recombination rate of 0.08 for D4S10 markers was obtained in this sample. Allelic frequencies of DNA markers in the general population are also reported.
