We report the independent discovery and characterization of two K2 planets: K2-180b, a mini-Neptune-sized planet in an 8.9-d orbit transiting a V = 12.6 mag, metal-poor (Fe/H = -0.65 ± 0.10) K2V star ...in K2 campaign 5; K2-140b, a transiting hot Jupiter in a 6.6-d orbit around a V = 12.6 mag G6V (Fe/H = + 0.10 ± 0.10) star in K2 campaign 10. Our results are based on K2 time-series photometry combined with high-spatial resolution imaging and high-precision radial velocity measurements. We present the first mass measurement of K2-180b. K2-180b has a mass of Mp = 11.3 ± 1.9 M_Earth and a radius of Rp = 2.2 ± 0.1 R_Earth, yielding a mean density of ρp = 5.6 ± 1.9 g cm-3, suggesting a rocky composition. Given its radius, K2-180b is above the region of the so-called `planetary radius gap'. K2-180b is in addition not only one of the densest mini-Neptune-sized planets, but also one of the few mini-Neptune-sized planets known to transit a metal-poor star. We also constrain the planetary and orbital parameters of K2-140b and show that, given the currently available Doppler measurements, the eccentricity is consistent with zero, contrary to the results of a previous study.
ABSTRACT
We present a detailed analysis of HARPS-N radial velocity observations of K2-100, a young and active star in the Praesepe cluster, which hosts a transiting planet with a period of 1.7 d. We ...model the activity-induced radial velocity variations of the host star with a multidimensional Gaussian Process framework and detect a planetary signal of 10.6 ± 3.0 ${\rm m\, s^{-1}}$, which matches the transit ephemeris, and translates to a planet mass of 21.8 ± 6.2 M⊕. We perform a suite of validation tests to confirm that our detected signal is genuine. This is the first mass measurement for a transiting planet in a young open cluster. The relatively low density of the planet, $2.04 _{ - 0.61 } ^ { + 0.66 }$ ${\rm g\, cm^{-3}}$, implies that K2-100b retains a significant volatile envelope. We estimate that the planet is losing its atmosphere at a rate of $10^{11}\!-\!10^{12}\, {\rm g\, s^{-1}}$ due to the high level of radiation it receives from its host star.
Adjuvant radiotherapy for breast cancer can lead to late cardiac complications. The highest radiation doses are likely to be to the anterior portion of the heart, including the left anterior ...descending coronary artery (LAD). The purpose of this work was to assess the radiation doses delivered to the heart and the LAD in respiration-adapted radiotherapy of patients with left-sided breast cancer.
24 patients referred for adjuvant radiotherapy after breast-conserving surgery for left-sided lymph node positive breast cancer were evaluated. The whole heart, the arch of the LAD and the whole LAD were contoured. The radiation doses to all three cardiac structures were evaluated.
For 13 patients, the plans were acceptable based on the criteria set for all 3 contours. For seven patients, the volume of heart irradiated was well below the set clinical threshold whereas a high dose was still being delivered to the LAD. In 1 case, the dose to the LAD was low while 19% of the contoured heart volume received over 20 Gy. In five patients, the dose to the arch LAD was relatively low while the dose to the whole LAD was considerably higher.
This study indicates that it is necessary to assess the dose delivered to the whole heart as well as to the whole LAD when investigating the acceptability of a breast irradiation treatment. Assessing the dose to only one of these structures could lead to excessive heart irradiation and thereby increased risk of cardiac complications for breast cancer radiotherapy patients.
Context. The Kepler extended mission, also known as K2, has provided the community with a wealth of planetary candidates that orbit stars typically much brighter than the targets of the original ...mission. These planet candidates are suitable for further spectroscopic follow-up and precise mass determinations, leading ultimately to the construction of empirical mass-radius diagrams. Particularly interesting is to constrain the properties of planets that are between Earth and Neptune in size, the most abundant type of planet orbiting Sun-like stars with periods of less than a few years. Aims. Among many other K2 candidates, we discovered a multi-planetary system around EPIC 246471491, referred to henceforth as K2-285, which contains four planets, ranging in size from twice the size of Earth to nearly the size of Neptune. We aim here at confirming their planetary nature and characterizing the properties of this system. Methods. We measure the mass of the planets of the K2-285 system by means of precise radial-velocity measurements using the CARMENES spectrograph and the HARPS-N spectrograph. Results. With our data we are able to determine the mass of the two inner planets of the system with a precision better than 15%, and place upper limits on the masses of the two outer planets. Conclusions. We find that K2-285b has a mass of Mb = 9.68−1.37+1.21 $9.68 _{ - 1.37 } ^ { + 1.21 } $ 9.68−1.37+1.21 M⊕ and a radius of Rb = 2.59−0.06+0.06 R⊕ $2.59 _{ - 0.06 } ^ { + 0.06 }\,R_{\oplus}$2.59−0.06+0.06 R⊕ , yielding a mean density of ρb = 3.07−0.45+0.45 g cm−3 $\rho_{\mathrm{b}}{\,=\,}3.07_{-0.45}^{+0.45}\,\textrm{g}\,\textrm{cm}^{-3}$ρb = 3.07−0.45+0.45 g cm−3 , while K2-285c has a mass of Mc = 15.68−2.13+2.28 M⊕ $15.68 _{ - 2.13 } ^ { + 2.28 }\,M_{\oplus}$15.68−2.13+2.28 M⊕ , radius of Rc = 3.53−0.08+0.08 R⊕ $3.53 _{ - 0.08 } ^ { + 0.08 }\,R_{\oplus}$3.53−0.08+0.08 R⊕ , and a mean density of ρc = 1.95−0.28+0.32 g cm−3 $\rho_{\mathrm{c}}{\,=\,}1.95_{-0.28}^{+0.32}\,\textrm{g}\,\textrm{cm}^{-3}$ρc = 1.95−0.28+0.32 g cm−3 . For K2-285d (Rd = 2.48−0.06+0.06 R⊕ $2.48 _{ - 0.06 } ^ { + 0.06 }\,R_{\oplus}$2.48−0.06+0.06 R⊕ ) and K2-285e (Re = 1.95−0.05+0.05 R⊕ $1.95 _{ - 0.05 } ^ { + 0.05 }\,R_{\oplus}$1.95−0.05+0.05 R⊕ ), the upper limits for the masses are 6.5 M⊕ and 10.7 M⊕, respectively. The system is thus composed of an (almost) Neptune-twin planet (in mass and radius), two sub-Neptunes with very different densities and presumably bulk composition, and a fourth planet in the outermost orbit that resides right in the middle of the super-Earth/sub-Neptune radius gap. Future comparative planetology studies of this system would provide useful insights into planetary formation, and also a good test of atmospheric escape and evolution theories.

Context. Multiplanet systems are excellent laboratories to test planet formation models as all planets are formed under the same initial conditions. In this context, systems transiting bright stars ...can play a key role, since planetary masses, radii, and bulk densities can be measured. Aims. GJ 9827 (K2-135) has recently been found to host a tightly packed system consisting of three transiting small planets whose orbital periods of 1.2, 3.6, and 6.2 days are near the 1:3:5 ratio. GJ 9827 hosts the nearest planetary system (~30 pc) detected by NASA’s Kepler or K2 space mission. Its brightness (V = 10.35 mag) makes the star an ideal target for detailed studies of the properties of its planets. Methods. Combining the K2 photometry with high-precision radial-velocity measurements gathered with the FIES, HARPS, and HARPS-N spectrographs we revised the system parameters and derive the masses of the three planets. Results. We find that GJ 9827 b has a mass of Mb = 3.69−0.46+0.48 M⊕ $M_{\mathrm{b}}\,{=}\,3.69 _{ - 0.46 } ^ { + 0.48 }\, M_{\oplus}$ Mb = 3.69−0.46+0.48 M⊕ and a radius of Rb = 1.58−0.13+0.14 R⊕ $R_{\mathrm{b}}=\,1.58 _{ - 0.13 } ^ { + 0.14 }\,R_{\oplus}$Rb= 1.58−0.13+0.14 R⊕, yielding a mean density of ρb = 5.11−1.27+1.74 g cm−3 $\rho_{\mathrm{b}}=\,5.11_{ - 1.27 }^{ + 1.74}\,\textrm{g\,cm}^{-3}$ρb= 5.11−1.27+1.74 g cm−3. For GJ 9827 d, we derive Md = 1.45−0.57+0.58 M⊕ $M_{\mathrm{d}}\,{=}\,1.45 _{ - 0.57 } ^ { + 0.58 }\,M_{\oplus}$Md = 1.45−0.57+0.58 M⊕, Rd = 1.24−0.11+0.11 R⊕ $R_{\mathrm{d}}\,{=}\,1.24 _{ - 0.11 } ^ { + 0.11 }\,R_{\oplus}$Rd = 1.24−0.11+0.11 R⊕, and ρd = 1.51−0.53+0.71 g cm−3 $\rho_{\mathrm{d}}\,{=}\,1.51 _{ - 0.53 } ^ { + 0.71 }\,\textrm{g\,cm}^{-3}$ρd = 1.51−0.53+0.71 g cm−3. Conclusions. GJ 9827 is one of the few known transiting planetary systems for which the masses of all planets have been determined with a precision better than 30%. This system is particularly interesting because all three planets are close to the limit between super-Earths and sub-Neptunes. The planetary bulk compositions are compatible with a scenario where all three planets formed with similar core and atmosphere compositions, and we speculate that while GJ 9827 b and GJ 9827 c lost their atmospheric envelopes, GJ 9827 d maintained its primordial atmosphere, owing to the much lower stellarirradiation. This makes GJ 9827 one of the very few systems where the dynamical evolution and the atmosphericescape can be studied in detail for all planets, helping us to understand how compact systems form and evolve.

Chronic airflow limitation (CAL) can be defined as fixed ratio of forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1)/forced vital capacity (FVC) < 0.70 after bronchodilation. It is unclear which is the most ...optimal ratio in relation to respiratory morbidity. The aim was to investigate to what extent different ratios of FEV1/FVC were associated with any respiratory symptom. In a cross‐sectional general population study, 15,128 adults (50–64 years of age), 7,120 never‐smokers and 8,008 ever‐smokers completed a respiratory questionnaire and performed FEV1 and FVC after bronchodilation. We calculated different ratios of FEV1/FVC from 0.40 to 1.0 using 0.70 as reference category. We analysed odds ratios (OR) between different ratios and any respiratory symptom using adjusted multivariable logistic regression. Among all subjects, regardless of smoking habits, the lowest odds for any respiratory symptom was at FEV1/FVC = 0.82, OR 0.48 (95% CI 0.41–0.56). Among never‐smokers, the lowest odds for any respiratory symptom was at FEV1/FVC = 0.81, OR 0.53 (95% CI 0.41–0.70). Among ever‐smokers, the odds for any respiratory symptom was lowest at FEV1/FVC = 0.81, OR 0.43 (95% CI 0.16–1.19), although the rate of inclining in odds was small in the upper part, that is FEV1/FVC = 0.85 showed similar odds, OR 0.45 (95% CI 0.38–0.55). We concluded that the odds for any respiratory symptoms continuously decreased with higher FEV1/FVC ratios and reached a minimum around 0.80–0.85, with similar results among never‐smokers. These results indicate that the optimal threshold associated with respiratory symptoms may be higher than 0.70 and this should be further investigated in prospective longitudinal studies.

Background: Data are lacking from general population studies on how to define changes in lung function after bronchodilation. This study aimed to analyze different measures of bronchodilator response ...of forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1), forced vital capacity (FVC) and slow vital capacity (SVC). Materials and methods: Data were derived from the Swedish Cardiopulmonary Bioimage Study (SCAPIS) Pilot study. This analysis comprised 1,050 participants aged 50–64 years from the general population. Participants were investigated using a questionnaire, and FEV1, FVC and SVC were recorded before and 15 minutes after inhalation of 400 µg of salbutamol. A bronchodilator response was defined as the relative change from baseline value expressed as the difference in units of percent predicted normal. Predictors of bronchodilator responses were assessed using multiple linear regression models. Airway obstruction was defined as FEV1/FVC ratio below lower limit of normal (LLN) before bronchodilation, and COPD was defined as an FEV1/FVC ratio below LLN after bronchodilation. Physician-diagnosed asthma was defined as an affirmative answer to “Have you ever had asthma diagnosed by a physician?”. Asymptomatic never-smokers were defined as those not reporting physician-diagnosed asthma, physician-diagnosed COPD or emphysema, current wheeze or chronic bronchitis and being a lifelong never-smoker. Results: Among all subjects, the greatest bronchodilator responses (FEV1, FVC and SVC) were found in subjects with asthma or COPD. The upper 95th percentile of bronchodilator responses in asymptomatic never-smokers was 8.7% for FEV1, 4.2% for FVC and 5.0% for SVC. The bronchodilator responses were similar between men and women. In a multiple linear regression model comprising all asymptomatic never-smokers, the bronchodilator response of FEV1was significantly associated with airway obstruction and height. Conclusion: When the bronchodilator response in asymptomatic never-smokers is reported as the difference in units of predicted normal, significant reversibility of FEV1, FVC and SVC to bronchodilators is ~9%, 4% and 5%, respectively.
