Recent research with Rapidly Mutating Y-STRs (RM Y-STRs) have shown that these loci provide substantially higher haplotype diversity and haplotype discrimination capacity in worldwide populations ...when compared with the Y-STRs commonly used in genetic forensics. The aim of this study was to develop an allelic frequency database for the population of Serbia in order to evaluate the resolution power of 13 RM Y-STRs. A total of 279 unrelated males from the population of Serbia were typed with 13 RM Y-STRs loci: DYF387S1, DYF399S1, DYF403S1a/b, DYF404S1, DYS449, DYS518, DYS526a/b, DYS547, DYS570, DYS576, DYS612, DYS626 and DYS627. A high Y-STR haplotype diversity was found (0.999768) in our samples. As expected, the RM Y-STR loci showed high genetics diversity (GD) values (>0.73) in the Serbian population. The highest GD was observed for the locus DYF399S1 (0.991), followed by loci DYF403S1a (0.976), DYF387S1 (0.907) and DYF404S1 (0.899). Based on the results of this study, the RM Y-STR loci showed remarkable haplotype resolution power in the population of Serbia, high genetics diversity and, therefore, demonstrating their usefulness in forensic identification cases.

Adequate e-waste management has become an emerging environmental issue across the globe. As a part of comprehensive environmental regulations, it is one of the prerequisites for the countries in the ...Western Balkan region in their process of admission into the European Union. In this region, waste electronic and electrical equipment (WEEE) is usually disposed of in municipal landfills, informally treated, remain stored in the households or is reused for component parts. By summarizing the current approach to e-waste management and providing the assessment of legal and institutional framework in this region, the paper focuses on the review of the future obligations of the Former Yugoslav Republic (FYR) of Macedonia and the Republic of Serbia pertaining to WEEE management. These two countries seem to have made the furthest progress in terms of the implementation of environmental regulations in the whole region. Based on the findings from available literature and stakeholder' interviews, the aim of the paper is to review the best practices and European experiences, and suggest the options for improving e-waste management in line with the requirements set out in Directive 2012/19/EU.

On the other hand, the pH value and SDS do affect the reaction rate, most probably due to electrostatic interactions with reactants. In summary, this study can be used as a simple model approach for the investigation of reaction mechanisms between platinum complexes and various biomolecules, and for the determination of potential toxicity and/or side effects of antitumour platinum drugs.
Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) represents a relatively rare type of mature B cell neoplasm, which arrises from the CD5+ cells of the mantle zone of lymph follicles. It often has the extranodal or ...leukemic presentation. It is characterized by the relative insensitivity to applied chemotherapy and high relapse rate after treatment. Median survival is about 3-4 years, and highly aggressive protocols may shift the median up to 5 years. Our patient was a typical example of the natural biological course of MCL. A male patient, 57 years old, was admitted to the Clinic for Oncology CC Nis, after he was diagnozed with primary mantle cell lymphoma of the digestive tract in the form of multiple lymphomatouos polyposis (MLP) of the colon and small intestine. After the colonoscopic biopsies, he was diagnosed with MCL. This case was regarded as advanced stage of lymphoma, with low MIPI index. He received 8 cycles of immunochemotherapy CHOP+Rituximab with excellent clinical response determined as complete remission (CR). After disease-free interval of two years, a relapse occurred in the stomach, which was histopathologically verified. MCL is still a disease with poor prognosis. Therapeutic approach, given the poor prognosis and resistance to conventional immunochemiotherapy and even high dose therapy followed by the autologuos stem cell transplantation, still remains insufficiently defined. Newer therapeutic agents which are found in a large number of clinical trials provide relatively encouraging results.

Biocompatibility of dental materials (DM) can be evaluated by gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) oxidative stress (OS) status. The goal of the study was to ascertain influence of dental caries degree, ...teeth position, and type and amount of applied DM on GCF OS profile. For this purpose, we tested six DMs that were sealed in one session: amalgam (Amg), composites: Tetric EvoCeram and Beautifil (BF), phosphate cement—zinc phosphate and polycarboxylate cements—zinc polycarboxylate cements, and glass ionomer cement (GIC). The study included 88 dental outpatients. Follow-up was scheduled at 7th and 30th day. Oxidative stress parameters (malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione (GSH) levels and total superoxide dismutase (tSOD) activity) were measured before (0th day) and after the treatment (7th and 30th day) in GCF. Control teeth were mirror-positioned healthy teeth. The DM accomplished the following effects (listed in descending order): increase of GSH in GCF was realized by ZPoC > BF > GIC > Amg; tSOD activity increase by ZPoC > BF > Amg; and MDA decrease by ZPoC > ZPhC > Amg > TEC. Dental caries provokes insignificant rise of OS in GCF. ZPoC and ZPhC showed the highest antioxidant effect, contrary to GIC. Restorations with antioxidant properties may reduce gum diseases initiated by caries lesion, what is of great clinical relevance in dentistry.

Renewed demand for incorporation of natural dyes (bio-colorants) in textile industry could be met through biotechnological production of bacterial pigments. Two new Streptomyces strains (NP2 and NP4) ...were isolated for the remarkable ability to produce diffusible deep blue and deep red pigment into fermentation medium. Crude mycelial extracts of both strains were used as bio-colorants in conventional textile dyeing procedures avoiding downstream purification procedures. The yields of bio-colorants obtained in this way were 62 and 84 mg per g of mycelia for Streptomyces sp. NP2 and Streptomyces sp. NP4, respectively. Through nuclear magnetic resonance analysis of crude extracts before and after dyeing procedures, it was shown that both extracts contained prodigiosin-like family of compounds that exhibited different dyeing capabilities towards different textile fibers. Polyamide and acrylic fibers were colored to the deepest shade, polyester and triacetate fibers to a noticeable, but much lower shade depth, while cotton and cellulosic fibers stained weakly. These results confirmed that crude bacterial extracts had the characteristics similar to those of ionic and disperse dyes, which was consistent with the identified polypyrrolic prodigiosin-like structures.
Recently, the interest of the forensic community has been focused on new Y-chromosomal short tandem repeats (Y-STRs), termed Rapidly Mutating Y-STRs (RM-YSTRs), which is able to differentiate between ...close males belonging to the same paternal lineage due to their high mutation rates. In this study, we have estimated a mutation rate for 13 RM-YSTR in 85 pairs of male relatives in the population of Serbia. We analysed 74 father-son pairs, and 11 twin pairs, to evaluate the capacity of distinguishing between male subjects within a single lineage. Each father-son couple was previously confirmed by autosomal STRs testing (AmpFℓSTR® Identifiler Plus™ kit, Applied Biosystems) with paternity probability ≥99.99% and also confirmed monozygotic or dizygotic twins. Results showed that, in the 74 father-son pairs 23 mutations were detected of which 22 were one-step mutations and 1 was two-step mutation, while in the 11 twin pairs 1 mutation was observed in one dizygotic twin pair. Five father-son pairs were found to have mutations at two loci, while one pair at four loci. Overall, the most mutable markers were DYF399S1, DYF387S1, DYF403S1a and DYS612. Our findings are encouraging and concur with previous studies showing that by RM-YSTR typing the discrimination power of male relatives could be considerably increased in comparison to every YSTR markers commonly used in forensic genetics.
