Three three-quasiparticle isomers, one at an excitation energy of 2.3 MeV with T1/2=0.48(4)μs, and two shorter-lived with unknown half-lives at slightly lower energies have been identified in Nd129 ...using the MARA + JUROGAM 3 setup and the recoil tagging technique. All three isomers present decay patterns characteristic of high-K isomers. The known 6.7 s β-decaying isomer previously assigned to the 5/2+ level is now assigned to the new 7/2- ground state. A new low-spin 5/2+ isomeric state with a half-life of a few tens of nanoseconds has been identified, while a previously known 2.6 s β-decay activity was assigned to the band head of the ν1/2+411 band. The transitions depopulating the high-K isomers to low-lying states also establish the relative energies of three low-lying one-quasiparticle bands, leading to a new spin-parity assignment of 7/2- to the ground state of Nd129. The partial half-lives of the depopulating transitions suggest spin-parities 21/2+, 19/2+, and 17/2+ for the three high-K isomers. The properties of the band built on the 21/2+ isomeric state suggest a one neutron-two proton configuration. Based on the results of extensive calculations with different models, we also assign one neutron-two proton configurations to the 19/2+ and 17/2+ isomeric states. The assigned configurations of the 17/2+ and 21/2+ isomeric states involve the π9/2+404 orbital, which is identified in three-quasiparticle bands of proton-rich A≈130 nuclei.

The precession of an atomic nucleus can be approximately described as wobbling motion, arising from the coupling of a rotation and a harmonic vibration. Recently, a number of wobbling bands were ...reported at low spin, which violate the wobbling approximation that can be valid only at high spin. In the present work, we explore the nature of the reported low-spin wobbling bands. Via a new experiment including both angular correlation and linear polarization measurements, we demonstrate that one such band in 187Au is generated by dominant single-particle excitation rather than by the excitation of a wobbling phonon. Assessing the experimental proofs and discussions to assign the reported low-spin wobbling bands, we further point out that the imperfect research paradigm used previously would lead to unreliable identification of low-spin wobbling bands.

The nucleus 163Lu has been populated through the reaction 139La(29Si,5n) with a beam energy of 157 MeV. Three triaxial, strongly deformed (TSD) bands have been observed with very similar rotational ...properties. The first excited TSD band has earlier been assigned as a one-phonon wobbling excitation built on the lowest-lying (yrast) TSD band. The large B(E2)(out)/B(E2)(in) value obtainable for one of four observed transitions between the second and first excited TSD bands is in good agreement with particle-rotor calculations for a two-phonon wobbling excitation.

We have recently studied the Nd nuclei up to very high spins and identified several bands, which were interpreted as the manifestation of various types of collective motion: tilted axis rotation, ...principal axis rotation along the short and long axes, wobbling motion, chiral bands. All these types of excitation have been observed in 138Nd and are discussed in the framework of the tilted axis cranking (TAC) and cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky (CNS) models.

Lifetimes or lifetime limits of a small number of excited states of the sulfur isotopes with mass numbers A=35, 36, 37, and 38 have been measured using the differential recoil-distance method. The ...isotopes of sulfur were populated in binary grazing reactions initiated by a beam of 36S ions of energy 225 MeV incident on a thin 208Pb target which was mounted in the Cologne plunger apparatus. The combination of the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer and an early implementation of the AGATA γ-ray tracking array was used to detect γ rays in coincidence with projectile-like nuclear species. Lifetime measurements of populated states were measured within the range from about 1 to 100 ps. The number of states for which lifetime measurements or lifetime limits were possible was limited by statistics. For 35S, the lifetime was determined for the first 1/2+ state at 1572 keV; the result is compared with a previous published lifetime value. The lifetime of the 3− state of 36S at 4193 keV was determined and compared with earlier measurements. No previous lifetime information exists for the (6+) state at 6690 keV; a lifetime measurement with large associated error was made in the present work. For 37S, the states for which lifetime limits were established were those at 646 keV with Jπ=3/2− and at 2776 keV with Jπ=11/2−; there are no previously published lifetime values for excited states of 37S. Finally, a lifetime limit was established for the Jπ=(6+) state of 38S at 3675 keV; no lifetime information exists for this state in the literature. Measured lifetime values were compared with the results of state-of-the-art shell-model calculations based on the PSDPF, SDPF-U, and FSU effective interactions. In addition, nuclear magnetic-dipole and electric-quadrupole moments, branching ratios, mixing ratios, and electromagnetic transition rates, where available, have been compared with shell-model values. The current work suffers from poor statistics; nevertheless, lifetime values and limits have been possible, allowing a useful discussion of the ability of state-of-the-art shell-model calculations to reproduce the experimental results.

The electromagnetic character of the Delta I = 1 transitions connecting the 1- to 0-phonon and the 2- to 1-phonon wobbling bands should be dominated by an E2 component, due to the collective motion ...of the entire nuclear charge. In the present work it is shown, based on combined angular correlation and linear polarization measurements, that the mixing ratios of all analyzed connecting transitions between low-lying bands in Pr-135 interpreted as 0-, 1-, and 2-phonon wobbling bands, have absolute values smaller than one. This indicates predominant M1 magnetic character, which is incompatible with the proposed wobbling nature. All experimental observables are instead in good agreement with quasiparticle-plus-triaxial-rotor model calculations, which describe the bands as resulting from a rapid re-alignment of the total angular momentum from the short to the intermediate nuclear axis.

A sequence of nine almost equidistant quadrupole transitions is observed in Nd137. The sequence represents an extremely regular rotational band that extends to a spin of about 75/2 and an excitation ...energy of ≈4.5MeV above yrast. Cranked mean-field calculations of the Nilsson-Strutinsky type suggest an oblate shape for the band. They reproduce the observed I(I+1) dependence of the rotational energy whereas predicting a pronounced decrease in the deformation, which is the hallmark of antimagnetic rotation.
