Results are presented from measuring the energy characteristics of muon bundles in inclined extensive air showers in the NEVOD-DECOR experiment. Estimates of the average energy of muons in the ...bundles are obtained in the 10 to 1000 PeV range of primary particle energies and compared to values calculated under different assumptions about the composition of cosmic radiation and models of hadronic interactions. An excess of experimental values of the average muon energy relative to calculations is found for high local densities corresponding to primary particle energies above 100 PeV.

Data on cosmic ray muon bundles accumulated at the NEVOD-DECOR complex over the period from May 2012 to December 2018 have been analyzed. eV an excess of multi-muon events compared to simulations is clearly seen. Present data are compatible with the expectation for recent LHC-adjusted hadron interaction models only under assumption of extremely heavy (iron group nuclei) primary composition. The assumption of a heavy composition is however in contradiction with other EAS observables, such as maximum depth and its fluctuations.

Abstract Exclusive photoproduction of $${{\rho ^0}} (770)$$ ρ 0 ( 770 ) mesons is studied using the H1 detector at the ep collider HERA. A sample of about 900,000 events is used to measure single- ...and double-differential cross sections for the reaction $$\gamma p \rightarrow \pi ^{+}\pi ^{-}Y$$ γ p → π + π - Y . Reactions where the proton stays intact ( $${{{m_Y}} {=}m_p}$$ m Y = m p ) are statistically separated from those where the proton dissociates to a low-mass hadronic system ( $$m_p{<}{{m_Y}} {<}10~{{\text {GeV}}} $$ m p < m Y < 10 GeV ). The double-differential cross sections are measured as a function of the invariant mass $$m_{\pi \pi }$$ m π π of the decay pions and the squared 4-momentum transfer t at the proton vertex. The measurements are presented in various bins of the photon–proton collision energy $${{W_{\gamma p}}} $$ W γ p . The phase space restrictions are $$0.5\le m_{\pi \pi } \le 2.2~{{\text {GeV}}} $$ 0.5 ≤ m π π ≤ 2.2 GeV , $$\vert t\vert \le 1.5~{{\text {GeV}^2}} $$ | t | ≤ 1.5 GeV 2 , and $$20 \le W_{\gamma p} \le 80~{{\text {GeV}}} $$ 20 ≤ W γ p ≤ 80 GeV . Cross section measurements are presented for both elastic and proton-dissociative scattering. The observed cross section dependencies are described by analytic functions. Parametrising the $${m_{\pi \pi }}$$ m π π dependence with resonant and non-resonant contributions added at the amplitude level leads to a measurement of the $${{\rho ^0}} (770)$$ ρ 0 ( 770 ) meson mass and width at $$m_\rho = 770.8{}^{+2.6}_{-2.7}~({\text {tot.}})~{{\text {MeV}}} $$ m ρ = 770.8 - 2.7 + 2.6 ( tot. ) MeV and $$\Gamma _\rho = 151.3 {}^{+2.7}_{-3.6}~({\text {tot.}})~{{\text {MeV}}} $$ Γ ρ = 151.3 - 3.6 + 2.7 ( tot. ) MeV , respectively. The model is used to extract the $${{\rho ^0}} (770)$$ ρ 0 ( 770 ) contribution to the $$\pi ^{+}\pi ^{-}$$ π + π - cross sections and measure it as a function of t and $${W_{\gamma p}}$$ W γ p . In a Regge asymptotic limit in which one Regge trajectory $$\alpha (t)$$ α ( t ) dominates, the intercept $$\alpha (t{=}0) = 1.0654\ {}^{+0.0098}_{-0.0067}~({\text {tot.}})$$ α ( t = 0 ) = 1.0654 - 0.0067 + 0.0098 ( tot. ) and the slope $$\alpha ^\prime (t{=}0) = 0.233 {}^{+0.067 }_{-0.074 }~({\text {tot.}}) ~{{\text {GeV}^{-2}}} $$ α ′ ( t = 0 ) = 0.233 - 0.074 + 0.067 ( tot. ) GeV - 2 of the t dependence are extracted for the case $$m_Y{=}m_p$$ m Y = m p .

NEVOD is the first and the only in the world Cherenkov water detector (CWD) for investigations of all cosmic ray components on the Earth’s surface. Conception of quasispherical modules for detection ...of Cherenkov light in water from any direction with an equal efficiency is analyzed. Additional detectors for CWD and results of various investigations are discussed. The future development of the CWD NEVOD as a test facility for calibration of new optical modules for very large volume neutrino telescopes is considered.

The new coordinate-tracking detector based on drift chambers (CTUDC) is created in MEPhI. The detector represents two planes with total area of 30 m2 placed on the opposite sides of Cherenkov water ...detector of 2000 m3 volume. Each plane consists of 8 large multiwire drift chambers (4000x508x112 mm3). The key advantages of these chambers are a large effective area (1.85 m2) and a good coordinate and angular resolution with a small number of measuring channels. From the beginning of 2017, CTUDC operates as a part of the experimental complex NEVOD. The detector is designed for measuring of high density muon bundles (up to 10 particles per m2) at zenith angles in the range from 30° to 90°. The results of the CTUDC operation during the last year are given, the first distributions of the events in zenith angle, muon bundle multiplicity and density obtained from the detector data are discussed.
Investigations of the energy loss of muon bundles are being conducted at the Experimental complex NEVOD. Such investigations are directed to detailed study of “muon puzzle” (the excess of multi-muon ...events observed in several cosmic ray experiments at ultra-high energies). Results of measurements of the muon bundle energy deposit during a long period of observations in primary cosmic ray energy range 10–1000 PeV have been obtained and have been compared with simulations performed on the basis of the CORSIKA code.

Influence of atmospheric temperature on muon flux at sea level is considered. Results of calculations of muon spectrum for normal atmospheric conditions, differential temperature coefficients (DTC) ...for muons at different zenith angles and threshold energies are presented. In calculations, a six-layer stationary spherical model of atmosphere is used, contributions of both pions and kaons as well as dependence of muon energy loss on muon energy are taken into account. Comparison of muon spectrum calculations and experimental data in a wide range of zenith angles and momentums shows a good agreement. Comparison of results of DTC calculations with results of earlier works exhibits only qualitative agreement; possible sources of differences are analyzed. Some practical questions of the use of DTC for muon hodoscope data analysis are discussed.

The new coordinate-tracking detector based on drift chambers TREK, for research of ultrahighenergy cosmic rays is under development at National Research Nuclear University MEPhI. At the present, a ...prototype of the future detector—coordinate-tracking unit based on drift chambers (CTUDC)—is functioning. The prototype consists of 16 drift chambers. Results of experimental series have shown wide capabilities of this type of detectors for registration of muon bundles, including bundles with high density of particles. Results of operation of the prototype and prospects of developing a full-size detector TREK are presented.
