We analyse seismograms of the slump episodes at Stromboli on December 30, 2002. Using a simple single force model, we estimate the volume involved in the individual subevents and attempt a ...chronological reconstruction of the whole process. Our results indicate the occurrence of two main events that could be interpreted as a submarine slump, which caused the observed tsunami, and a subaerial slump, which did not produce destructive sea waves. A total volume of about 20 × 106 m3 results for the submarine event, which developed over about 2 minutes with several distinct detachments, the first and largest displacing a volume of 10.8 × 106 m3. The second, subaerial, slump involved at least 2.5 × 106 m3, in about 90 s. A large long period pulse is also recognizable in the seismograms of the Stromboli station. We tentatively interpret this feature as tilt caused by the water load associated with the inundation in the Ficogrande area, on the northeastern side of the island.

Fecal pollution source tracking (FST) studies the origin of fecal contamination and promotes action to eliminate it to improve human health and environmental sustainability. This work presents the ...temporal and spatial relations of human mitochondrial DNA (HmtDNA), fecal coliforms (FC) and live microbial biomass (ATP) in seawater during a hepatitis A outbreak among a human coastal population. The study area is approximately 100 km along the coastline of the Biobío Region in the southeastern Pacific (Humboldt Current System, Chile). Total data from the swash zone from summer 2015 to autumn 2016 show there were significant positive log-log correlations between FC and HmtDNA (R = 0.32) and ATP (R = 0.31). These correlations were highest during the austral spring of 2015 (R = 0.53 and 0.58 respectively), when HmtDNA also correlated significantly with ATP (R = 0.86). Maximum average values of the parameters measured in this season showed a temporal-spatial concordance with the peak in the number of hepatitis A cases among the nearby coastal population. FC correlated significantly with HmtDNA (R = 0.98) in the water column of the coastal zone close to Concepción Bay during the austral summer of 2016 and in the swash zone of the bay (R = 0.68) throughout the study period. Hepatitis A virus (HAV) has also been detected in organisms and seawater in Concepción Bay, which is consistent with the high incidence of hepatitis A among the coastal population. The concordance between human fecal pollution in the study area and a seasonal hepatitis A outbreak strongly suggests that HmtDNA and its relation with FC and ATP in the coastal zone of marine environments can be used as a proxy to evaluate the risk of outbreaks of thalassogenic diseases.

In the Apennines subduction (Italy), earthquakes mainly occur within the overriding plate, along the chain axis. The events concentrate in the upper 15 km of the crust above the mantle wedge, and ...focal solutions indicate normal faulting. In the foreland, the seismogenic volume affects the upper 35 km of the crust. Focal solutions indicate prevailing reverse faulting in the northern foreland and strike‐slip faulting in the southern one. The deepening of the seismogenic volume from the chain axis to the foreland follows the deepening of the Moho and isotherms. The seismicity above the mantle wedge is associated with uplift of the chain axial zone, volcanism, high CO2 flux, and extension. The upward pushing of the asthenospheric mantle and the mantle‐derived, CO2‐rich fluids trapped within the crust below the chain axis causes this seismicity. All these features indicate that the axial zone of Apennines is affected by early rifting processes. In northern Italy, the widespread and deeper seismicity in the foreland reflects active accretion processes. In the southern foreland, the observed dextral strike‐slip faulting and the lack of reverse focal solutions suggest that accretion processes are not active at present. In our interpretation of the Apennines subduction, the shallower seismicity of the overriding plate is due to the dynamics (uprising and eastward migration) of the asthenospheric wedge.

Levels of copper, zinc and lead were determined in sediments and edible muscle of marine snail Strombus gigas collected from Guacanayabo Gulf, Cuba. The concentration range of each metal in marine ...snail muscle on mg kg⁻¹ wet weight varied as follows: Cu = 6.4-32.6, Zn = 20.4-31.1 and Pb = 0.2-2.3; and in corresponding sediments (on mg kg⁻¹ dry weight) as: Cu = 157-186, Zn = 56-94 and Pb = 20-37. The average biota-sediment accumulation factors (BSAFs) obtained for studied metals are less than unity in all cases, indicating that only a little fraction of metal content in the sediments is bioavailable, independently of their possible enrichments in the sediments. The concentrations of copper and lead in some of the marine snails are above typical public health recommended limits.

These organisms grow in complex media without added NaCl, but have a maximum growth rate in media with 1.0% NaCl and grow in media containing up to 6.0% NaCl. The organisms are extremely ionizing radiation resistant; 60% of the cells survive 5.0
kGy. These strains are chemoorganotrophic and aerobic; do not grow in
Thermus medium under anaerobic conditions with or without nitrate as electron acceptor and glucose as a source of carbon and energy, but ferment glucose to
d-lactate without formation of gas. The organisms assimilate a large variety of sugars, organic acids and amino acids. Iron, chromium, cobalt and nickel concentration levels in urban soil samples collected from Moa city (Holguín province), northeastern Cuba were determined. Both chromium and nickel contents exceed ...the Dutch Intervention Value soil quality standard in 2.8-5.4 and 1.3-3.3 times, respectively. Furthermore, cobalt content exceeds the Target Value in 1.3-1.8 times. Metal-to-Iron normalization predicts a natural origin for nickel and cobalt (Enrichment Factor <1), and also a moderate chromium enrichment (Enrichment Factor = 1.5-4.0) in all studied stations. The application of the Urban Environment Entropy Model show that residential area located near to industrial area is slightly affected by industrial chromium emissions and not affected by cobalt and nickel possible emissions. A chromium speciation in soil samples is recommended in order to evaluate the real impact of the current chromium content in Moa urban soils to local urban and suburban agricultures.

The present study analyzes the effect of perceived discrimination on satisfaction with life and radicalization in adolescents. We hypothesize that perceived discrimination relates positively to the ...radicalization of adolescents, while satisfaction with life plays a mediating role in the negative effects of discrimination. We also suggest that gender has a modulating effect, since there are vast differences in the effects of perceived discrimination in girls and boys. Eighty-seven girls and 126 boys from a Spanish secondary school participated in the study, aged 15 to 25. Results show that perceived discrimination relates positively to radicalization in boys but not in girls. Conversely, discrimination relates negatively with satisfaction with life in girls, but not in boys. The mediating effect of this variable barely relates to radicalization in either gender; however, gender does show a modulating effect, which can be seen in the differences found between boys and girls: perceived discrimination relates positively with radicalization in boys but not in girls; conversely, it relates negatively with satisfaction with life in the case of girls but not in boys. These findings highlight the importance of achieving an appropriate integration of adolescents in society.

In this study, we integrate information gathered from surface geology and tectonics with the results of a shallow (0-2 km b.s.l.) seismic tomography of Vulcano Island (Italy), obtained from the ...analysis of local earthquakes. The observed low Vp regions correspond to caldera filling products, mainly consisting of pyroclastics, tuffs, lava flows and hyaloclastites. High-velocity anomalies represent intrusive bodies. The striking correspondence between the stratigraphy from deep wells and the calculated velocity structure allows us to reconstruct the geometry and distribution of a main intrusion and to recognize some intra-caldera depressions. The shape and location of the high and low Vp anomalies are consistent with NW-SE and N-S strikes. Eruptive centres younger than 42 kyr, as well as the structural depressions of Vulcano and of the neighbour Lipari Island, align along a N-S direction. The combined interpretation of the available structural data and of the results from the tomography suggests that magmatic reservoirs of Vulcano at shallow depth (>0.5 km) align along a NW-SE strike but their shape is controlled by N-S striking normal faults and/or cracks that accommodate the right-lateral movements of the NW-SE strike-slip fault system.PUBLICATION ABSTRACT

Metal-to-Iron ratio in sediments shows ...an average enrichment for Cu (5,1), Pb (11,7) and Zn (1,3) in the last 20 years. Metal concentrations found in soft tissue of C. rhizophorae are site dependent. The average biota-sediment accumulation factors (BSAFs) obtained for Fe, Cu and Pb are less than unity in all cases, indicating that only a little fraction of Cu and Pb in the sediments is bioavailable, independently of their enrichments. Zinc has an average BSAF value of 2.4 and may represent a serious impact in the area. The concentrations of zinc and copper in some of the oysters are above typical public health recommended limits.
