The fatigue process of concrete under compressive cyclic loading is still not completely explored. The corresponding damage processes within the material structure are especially not entirely ...investigated. The application of acoustic measurement methods enables a better insight into the processes of the fatigue in concrete. Normal strength concrete was investigated under compressive cyclic loading with regard to the fatigue process by using acoustic methods in combination with other nondestructive measurement methods. Acoustic emission and ultrasonic signal measurements were applied together with measurements of strains, elastic modulus, and static strength. It was possible to determine the anisotropic character of the fatigue damage caused by uniaxial loading based on the ultrasonic measurements. Furthermore, it was observed that the fatigue damage seems to consist not exclusively of load parallel oriented crack structures. Rather, crack structures perpendicular to the load as well as local compacting are likely components of the fatigue damage. Additionally, the ultrasonic velocity appears to be a good indicator for fatigue damage beside the elastic modulus. It can be concluded that acoustic methods allow an observation of the fatigue process in concrete and a better understanding, especially in combination with further measurement methods.

Recently developed new transducers for ultrasonic transmission, which can be embedded right into concrete, are now used for non-destructive permanent monitoring of concrete. They can be installed ...during construction or thereafter. Large volumes of concrete can be monitored for changes of material properties by a limited number of transducers. The transducer design, the main properties as well as installation procedures are presented. It is shown that compressional waves with a central frequency of 62 kHz are mainly generated around the transducer's axis. The transducer can be used as a transmitter or receiver. Application examples demonstrate that the transducers can be used to monitor concrete conditions parameters (stress, temperature, …) as well as damages in an early state or the detection of acoustic events (e.g., crack opening). Besides application in civil engineering our setups can also be used for model studies in geosciences.

The durability of prestressed concrete structures built between the 1950s and 1980s is becoming a growing problem. One reason is the sensitivity to stress corrosion cracking of the prestressing ...steel. Failure of prestressing wires can result in collapse of the entire structure without premature indication by transverse bending cracks or considerable deformation. The response of a structure to significant number of prestressing wire breaks was studied on a bridge in Brandenburg, Germany. Two thirds of the prestressing wires in concentrated tendons of two girders were cut before the bridge was demolished. Acoustic Emission Analysis was used to detect the wire breaks. Thus, the number of wire breaks was correlated with results of other measurement techniques, in particular strain measurements on the girders. In preparation of the measurements, the acoustic properties of the bridge were determined and the suitability of Schmidt hammer impacts as an acoustic reference source was validated.

Bending beams and slabs are typical examples for structural elements used for reinforced concrete structures such as bridge girders, T-beams and bridge decks. Their strength related failure modes at ...maximum loading can be divided into bending and shear failure. The failure of beams loaded in bending can occur with or without indication. Therefore, conventional design concepts aim on failure modes with sufficient indication (e.g. large deflections or cracks), as it occurs in the case of secondary flexural compression failure. These indicating factors can also be used for Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) of civil infrastructure systems (e.g. bridges) to identify structural changes. In this context, non-destructive testing (NDT) methods offer different techniques for measuring deflections or crack formation and opening. However, profound knowledge on the determining failure modes of bending beams and their detection by NDT methods is required for the reliable application of SHM. Different NDT methods have been used in this study for analysing the load-bearing behaviour of a reinforced concrete beam in bending. The different measuring techniques are briefly described and their applicability is discussed by means of experimental results. For this purpose, the load-bearing behaviour of a reinforced concrete beam having a span of 2.75 m was investigated in a four-point bending flexural test at laboratory scale. The focus is on the characterization of determining failure modes by optical NDT and the comparison with classical measuring techniques (e.g. deformation measurements by displacement transducers). The bending beam was equipped with two single-mode (SM) sensor fibres. One fibre served as Distributed Optical Fibre Sensor (DOFS), whereas the other fibre contained Fibre Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors. In addition, optical deformation measurements using Digital Image Correlation (DIC) and Stereophotogrammetry (SP) were conducted.

Two test series were examined using nondestructive measuring methods by six independent laboratories before determining their compressive strength. The nondestructive test methods used were the ...rebound hammer and ultrasonic pulse velocity measurement. Two types of geometries were investigated: drilled cores and cubes. The measurement procedure for each of these datasets is conditioned to the geometry and is therefore different.
The first series consists of 20 drilled cores (approximately diameter/height = 10 cm/20 cm) from the 55-year-old Lahntal Viaduct near Limburg, Germany. After preparation in the first laboratory, the lateral surface of the drilled cores was tested with the rebound hammer using a given pattern. Every laboratory tested every drilled core at different locations. Ultrasonic measurements in transmission were performed repeatedly at predefined points on the flat surfaces of the specimen.
The second series consisted of 25 newly manufactured concrete cubes of a mix with a target concrete strength class of C30/37. The edge length was 15 cm. Each laboratory received five specimens of this test series. Thus, contrary to the first series, each specimen was tested by only one laboratory. Two side faces of each cube were tested with the rebound hammer. In addition, ultrasonic measurements were performed by one laboratory. The time of flight was measured between the tested side faces of the rebound hammer at different positions.
For both series, rebound hammers were used to determine the R-value as well as the Q-value. The rebound hammer models within the laboratories were always the same, while they differed between the laboratories. The ultrasonic measurements took place with different measurement systems and couplants. Finally, both specimen series were tested destructively for compressive strength.
The dataset contains the raw data summarized in tabular form. In addition, relevant calculated data are included in some cases. For the ultrasonic measurements, the time of flight has already been converted into the ultrasonic velocity. Besides, in addition to the raw data of the compressive strength test (force, weight, and geometry values), the calculated compressive strengths and densities are also provided.

Severe fires at the Friedrichshain flak bunker in May 1945 destroyed or severely damaged an important part of the collection of the Kaiser-Friedrich-Museum, Berlin, today’s Bode Museum. Fragments of ...two marble sculptures by Tullio Lombardo, sculptor of the Italian renaissance, have survived and are now stored in the Bode Museum. In preparation for restoration, the condition of the sculptures has been documented in detail in 2010. The study revealed that the fragments are not stable enough to exhibit them in a horizontal nor in an upright position. The intention of a further study in 2012 was to find a correlation between ultrasonic velocity and mechanical properties of burned Carrara marble as a basis for stabilization measures. The results and numerous supplementary experiments show that the current condition of the sculptural fragments can not only be explained by the exposure to fire.

Alkali-activated materials are ideal for the repair of concrete structures in harsh environmental conditions due to their high durability in chemically aggressive environments. However, slag-based ...mortars, in particular, are prone to shrinkage and associated cracks. In this respect, the application of steel fibres is one solution to reduce the formation of shrinkage induced cracks and to improve post cracking behaviour of these mortars. This study investigated the influence of two different types of steel fibres on the tensile properties of two alkali-activated mortars. Direct tensile tests and single fibre pull-outs were performed to analyse the determining failure modes both on macro and micro scale. Mechanical testing was accompanied by non-destructive testing methods such as digital image correlation and acoustic emission for a detailed analysis of the fracture process.
The susceptibility of concrete structures due to alkali–silica reaction (ASR) can be assessed by means of ASR concrete prism testing at 60 °C, according to RILEM AAR 4.1. There, expansion of concrete ...prisms indicates alkali-reactivity of the examined concrete mix. This work applies in situ expansion measurement to accelerated concrete prism testing. Automated measuring facilitates both storage without the usually necessary interruptions for manual measurement and acquisition of quasi-continuous expansion data. A comparative experimental programme showed that conventional testing resulted in stronger expansion and leaching of alkalis than automated testing. Experimental simulation of interruptions, typically associated with manual measurements in conventional testing, could prove the influence of these cooling–heating cycles. Two phenomenological approaches, frequently used for describing reaction kinetics of ASR by linking it to expansion results from ASR-testing, were validated with continuous expansion data of three types of aggregate. Experimental expansion depicted s-shaped curves similar to them of the modelling approaches. However, strong swelling recorded in the beginning of the test was not covered by the model curves. Auxiliary measurement of acoustic emissions and ultrasonic velocity helped characterising mechanisms such as hydration and cracking, which also influence prism expansion. The proposed modification of the measurement procedure provides an extended basis to analyse expansion mechanisms. Regarding data for validation of ASR-expansion models, continuous expansion results are preferable to conventional test results.

Im Vorfeld der Sprengung wurden durch das Bundesministerium für Digitales und Verkehr (BMDV) weiterführende Untersuchungen zum Schadensbild veranlasst, welche vom Landesbetrieb Straßenwesen Brandenburg koordiniert und in den Bauablauf integriert wurden. Das von der Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft (HTW) Dresden erstellte Versuchskonzept ist Bestandteil des vorangestellten ersten Teils des Beitrags 1. Hier im zweiten Teil werden ausgewählte Ergebnisse der umfangreichen versuchsbegleitenden Mess‐ und Monitoringmaßnahmen beschrieben, welche in Kooperation der HTW Dresden, der Bilfinger Noell GmbH sowie der Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und ‐prüfung (BAM) durchgeführt wurden.

Experiences from the deconstruction of the Bridge Altstädter Bahnhof in the city of Brandenburg – Part 2: Damage Monitoring during Destructive Tests
A routine inspection of the B1 bridge at the Altstädter Bahnhof in Brandenburg an der Havel in December 2019 revealed massive and rapidly progressing damage. The cause of the cracks along the longitudinal girders was suspected to be the failure of a significant portion of the prestressing wires of the concentrated tendons. The bridge was immediately closed to traffic and demolished in May 2021. Prior to the demolition, the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV) initiated further investigations into the damage pattern, which were coordinated and integrated into the deconstruction process by the Landesbetrieb Straßenwesen Brandenburg. The test concept was developed by the
Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft Dresden
(HTW) and is described in the previous article (Part 1). The article at present (Part 2) describes selected results of the extensive measurement and monitoring measures accompanying the tests. The Tests were carried out in cooperation with the HTW Dresden, Bilfinger Noell GmbH and the Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und ‐prüfung (BAM).
