Heating efficiently solid-density, or even compressed, matter has been a long-sought goal in order to allow investigation of the properties of such state of matter of interest for various domains, ...e.g. astrophysics. High-power lasers, pinches, and more recently Free-Electron-Lasers (FELs) have been used in this respect. Here we show that by using the high-power, high-contrast "PEARL" laser (Institute of Applied Physics-Russian Academy of Science, Nizhny Novgorod, Russia) delivering 7.5 J in a 60 fs laser pulse, such coupling can be efficiently obtained, resulting in heating of a slab of solid-density Al of 0.8 µm thickness at a temperature of 300 eV, and with minimal density gradients. The characterization of the target heating is achieved combining X-ray spectrometry and measurement of the protons accelerated from the Al slab. The measured heating conditions are consistent with a three-temperatures model that simulates resistive and collisional heating of the bulk induced by the hot electrons. Such effective laser energy deposition is achieved owing to the intrinsic high contrast of the laser which results from the Optical Parametric Chirped Pulse Amplification technology it is based on, allowing to attain high target temperatures in a very compact manner, e.g. in comparison with large-scale FEL facilities.

Mitochondrial dysfunction is a key driver of neurodegeneration. This study aimed to evaluate the protective potential of EPOR/CD131 (heterodimeric erythropoietin receptor) stimulation in the ...neurodegeneration caused by rotenone-induced mitochondrial dysfunction. The effects of erythropoietin (EPO) and an EPO mimetic peptide pHBSP were assessed using in vivo and in vitro models. Single injections of 10 µg/kg EPO or 5 µg/kg pHBSP significantly alleviated the degeneration of ganglion cells of the retina in a rotenone-induced retinopathy in rats (p < 0.05). Consistently, in vitro exposure of rotenone-treated murine primary neuroglial cultures to 500 nM EPO or pHBSP significantly rescued the survival of the cells (p < 0.005). The observed enhancement of LC3A, ATG7, Beclin-1, Parkin and BNIP3 mRNA expression by EPOR/CD131 agonists implicates the autophagy and mitophagy activation as a plausible mitoprotective mechanism.
The exclusive deep inelastic electroproduction of ψ(2S) and J/ψ(1S) at an ep centre-of-mass energy of 317 GeV has been studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA in the kinematic range 2<Q2<80 GeV2, ...30<W<210 GeV and |t|<1 GeV2, where Q2 is the photon virtuality, W is the photon–proton centre-of-mass energy and t is the squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex. The data for 2<Q2<5 GeV2 were taken in the HERA I running period and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 114 pb−1. The data for 5<Q2<80 GeV2 are from both HERA I and HERA II periods and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 468 pb−1. The decay modes analysed were μ+μ− and J/ψ(1S)π+π− for the ψ(2S) and μ+μ− for the J/ψ(1S). The cross-section ratio σψ(2S)/σJ/ψ(1S) has been measured as a function of Q2,W and t. The results are compared to predictions of QCD-inspired models of exclusive vector-meson production.

High-precision HERA data corresponding to a luminosity of around 1 fb−1 have been used in the framework of eeqq contact interactions (CI) to set limits on possible high-energy contributions beyond ...the Standard Model to electron-quark scattering. Measurements of the inclusive deep inelastic cross sections in neutral and charged current ep scattering were considered. The analysis of the ep data has been based on simultaneous fits of parton distribution functions including contributions of CI couplings to ep scattering. Several general CI models and scenarios with heavy leptoquarks were considered. Improvements in the description of the inclusive HERA data were obtained for a few models. Since a statistically significant deviation from the Standard Model cannot be established, limits in the TeV range were set on all models considered.

The high-precision HERA data allows searches up to TeV scales for beyond the Standard Model contributions to electron–quark scattering. Combined measurements of the inclusive deep inelastic cross ...sections in neutral and charged current ep scattering corresponding to a luminosity of around 1 fb−1 have been used in this analysis. A new approach to the beyond the Standard Model analysis of the inclusive ep data is presented; simultaneous fits of parton distribution functions together with contributions of “new physics” processes were performed. Results are presented considering a finite radius of quarks within the quark form-factor model. The resulting 95% C.L. upper limit on the effective quark radius is 0.43⋅10−16 cm.

A simultaneous fit of parton distribution functions (PDFs) and electroweak parameters to HERA data on deep inelastic scattering is presented. The input data are the neutral current and charged ...current inclusive cross sections which were previously used in the QCD analysis leading to the HERAPDF2.0 PDFs. In addition, the polarization of the electron beam was taken into account for the ZEUS data recorded between 2004 and 2007. Results on the vector and axial-vector couplings of the Z boson to u- and d-type quarks, on the value of the electroweak mixing angle and the mass of the W boson are presented. The values obtained for the electroweak parameters are in agreement with Standard Model predictions.
