Sixty-six subjects from 7 families with a strong family history of generalized osteoarthritis (OA) and 13 patients with erosive OA were evaluated clinically and radiologically. Blood samples from 58 ...subjects in the familial OA group and from all 13 patients with erosive OA were obtained for DNA analysis. Exon 31 of COL2A1, which spans residue 519, was amplified by polymerase chain reaction. The arg super(519)-to-cys mutation was detected in 2 of the 7 families with generalized OA. In these 2 families, the mutation was present in the 2 probands and in 19 other clinically affected family members, as well as in 3 (so-far) clinically unaffected family members (ages 25, 14, and 11 years). It was absent in 18 clinically unaffected members tested. The mutation was associated with a distinctive pattern of early-onset, aggressive, generalized OA with a mild spinal chondrodysplasia. Inheritance was autosomal dominant. No mutation was found in any of the patients with erosive OA.

A 53-yr-old Chinese sailor developed prolonged pyrexia with unresolved lobar pneumonia, cervical lymphadenopathy, generalized subcutaneous abscesses, and pericardial effusion. Penicillium marneffei ...was isolated from pericardial fluid and subcutaneous pus and was demonstrated on histologic sections of lymph nodes and lung tissue. The penicilliosis was treated successfully with amphotericin B, ketoconazole, and 5-fluorocytosine. Subsequently, he also developed other T-lymphocyte-related opportunistic infections such as disseminated cutaneous herpes zoster and chronic osteomyelitis of sternum caused by Salmonella typhimurium. He was also a chronic carrier of cytomegalovirus. Further investigations showed that he had persistent depression of T-lymphocyte function and enhancement of B-lymphocyte activity, the cause of which was undetermined.
In this paper, a new design algorithm of FIR filters is proposed based on the following two notions in filter design. Firstly, only cutoff frequency is defined without specifying the transition ...bands. Secondly, equiripple filters and best L 2 filters are optimum in terms of the Chebyshev criteria (minimum peak error) and L 2 criteria (least squared error), respectively. However, with only a slight penalty of performance under one criterion, performance under the other criterion can be significantly increased. Motivated by these two notions, the proposed algorithm uses the steepest gradient descent (SGD) algorithm to correct the coefficients of optimum L 2 filters iteratively to achieve the optimum result. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm has a comparable performance to the optimum algorithm while at a lower complexity as well as to avoid some divergent problems
We present measurements of the normalised redshift-space three-point correlation function (Q_z) of galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) main galaxy sample. We have applied our "npt" ...algorithm to both a volume-limited (36738 galaxies) and magnitude-limited sample (134741 galaxies) of SDSS galaxies, and find consistent results between the two samples, thus confirming the weak luminosity dependence of Q_z recently seen by other authors. We compare our results to other Q_z measurements in the literature and find it to be consistent within the full jack-knife error estimates. However, we find these errors are significantly increased by the presence of the ``Sloan Great Wall'' (at z ~ 0.08) within these two SDSS datasets, which changes the 3-point correlation function (3PCF) by 70% on large scales (s>=10h^-1 Mpc). If we exclude this supercluster, our observed Q_z is in better agreement with that obtained from the 2dFGRS by other authors, thus demonstrating the sensitivity of these higher-order correlation functions to large-scale structures in the Universe. This analysis highlights that the SDSS datasets used here are not ``fair samples'' of the Universe for the estimation of higher-order clustering statistics and larger volumes are required. We study the shape-dependence of Q_z(s,q,theta) as one expects this measurement to depend on scale if the large scale structure in the Universe has grown via gravitational instability from Gaussian initial conditions. On small scales (s <= 6h^-1 Mpc), we see some evidence for shape-dependence in Q_z, but at present our measurements are consistent with a constant within the errors (Q_z ~ 0.75 +/- 0.05). On scales >10h^-1 Mpc, we see considerable shape-dependence in Q_z.

We used hemofiltration to treat a patient with digoxin overdose complicated by refractory hyperkalemia, congestive heart failure, chronic renal failure, and complete atrioventricular heart block. ...Hemofiltration was associated with a progressive fall in plasma digoxin level and potassium level. This was accompanied by resolution of the heart failure and complete heart block. Hemofiltration appears to provide a therapeutic alternative in digoxin overdose.
