The accurate estimation of wind power is crucial not only to conduct wind energy research but also to improve policy and planning decisions for the national government. However, reliable wind speed ...datasets at turbine height that can be used for wind power estimation in China are very limited. In this study, the simulated wind profile (expressed by a power-law approach) is optimized using radiosonde wind speed measurements. The wind speed at a typical turbine height (80 m) is then constructed using the optimized wind profile and 10-m wind speed measured at each conventional meteorological station throughout the country. Compared with measurements, the constructed wind speed has reasonable errors (0.08 m s
−1
in mean bias, 0.89 m s
−1
in root mean square error, and 0.90 in correlation coefficient), which are much smaller than the model errors. Further comparison shows the constructing method in the current study outperforms the other similar statistical methods. Therefore, this method and the constructed wind speed dataset are suggested for wind energy research in China.

To investigate the bond behavior of ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) and steel bar, central pull-out tests of 48 cube bond specimens were conducted, the ultimate tension, mean bonding stress, ...the average slip were evaluated. The influence of embedded length and diameter of reinforcing bar on bonding property of reinforced concrete in UHPC was discussed. The results show that the average ultimate bonding stress increases with the increase of bonding length. When the embedded length is 3d and 4d, the reinforcing bar is pulled out, and when the embedded length is 5d, the reinforcing bar is broken. When the diameter of reinforcing bar increased from 14 to 20 mm, the average ultimate bonding stress increased with increase of the ultimate tensile force.

Luteolin (LUT), a flavonoid found in various plants, has been reported to have potential therapeutic effects in melanoma. However, poor water solubility and low bioactivity have severely restricted ...the clinical application of LUT. Based on the high reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels in melanoma cells, we developed nanoparticles encapsulating LUT with the ROS-responsive material poly(propylene sulfide)-poly(ethylene glycol) (PPS-PEG) to enhance the water solubility of LUT, accelerate the release of LUT in melanoma cells, and further enhance its anti-melanoma effect, providing a viable solution for the application of LUT nano-delivery systems in melanoma therapy.
In this study, LUT-loaded nanoparticles were prepared with PPS-PEG and named as LUT-PPS-NPs. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were applied to determine the size and morphology of LUT-PPS-NPs. In vitro studies were carried out to determine the uptake and mechanism of LUT-PPS-NPs by SK-MEL-28 melanoma cells. According to the CCK-8 assay, the cytotoxic effects of LUT-PPS-NPs on human skin fibroblasts (HSF) and SK-MEL-28 cells were assessed. Apoptosis assays, cell migration and invasion assays, and proliferation inhibition assays with low and normal density plating were also applied to test the in vitro anti-melanoma effect. Additionally, melanoma models were established utilizing BALB/c nude mice and initially evaluated the growth inhibitory impact following intratumoral injection of LUT-PPS-NPs.
The size of LUT-PPS-NPs was 169.77 ± 7.33 nm with high drug loading (15.05 ± 0.07%). In vitro, cellular assays confirmed that LUT-PPS-NPs were efficiently internalized by SK-MEL-28 cells and showed low cytotoxicity against HSF. Moreover, LUT released from LUT-PPS-NPs significantly inhibited tumor cell proliferation, migration and invasion. Animal experiments showed that LUT-PPS-NPs inhibited tumor growth more than 2-fold compared with the LUT group.
In conclusion, the LUT-PPS-NPs developed in our study enhanced the anti-melanoma effect of LUT.
The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) is a precision particle physics detector on the International Space Station (ISS) conducting a unique, long-duration mission of fundamental physics research in ...space. The physics objectives include the precise studies of the origin of dark matter, antimatter, and cosmic rays as well as the exploration of new phenomena. Following a 16-year period of construction and testing, and a precursor flight on the Space Shuttle, AMS was installed on the ISS on May 19, 2011. In this report we present results based on 120 billion charged cosmic ray events up to multi-TeV energies. This includes the fluxes of positrons, electrons, antiprotons, protons, and nuclei. These results provide unexpected information, which cannot be explained by the current theoretical models. The accuracy and characteristics of the data, simultaneously from many different types of cosmic rays, provide unique input to the understanding of origins, acceleration, and propagation of cosmic rays.

We introduce a set of one-dimensional quantum lattice models which we refer to as the quantum torus chain. These models have discrete global symmetry and projective on-site representations. They ...possess an integer-valued parameter which controls the presence or absence of frustration. Depending on whether this parameter is even or odd, these models exhibit either gapped symmetry-breaking phases with isolated critical points or gapped symmetry-breaking phases separated by gapless phases. We discuss the property of these phases and phase transitions for two special values of the parameter and point out many open problems.

An expression for anisotropic interfacial energy of hexagonal close-packed metals has been formulated which is able to reproduce published data obtained using the modified embedded-atom method, ...covering the variation in interface energy as a function of orientation for a number of metals. The coefficients associated with the expression can be determined fully by measured or calculated interfacial energies of just three independent crystal planes. Three-dimensional phase-field model simulations using this representation of interfacial energy have been found to yield convincing crystal morphologies. The apparent rate of crystal growth as a function of orientation in the phase-field simulation agrees with predictions made by surface energy theory.

Drought is firstly a resource issue, and with its development it evolves into a disaster issue. Drought events usually occur in a determinate but a random manner. Drought has become one of the major ...factors to affect sustainable socioeconomic development. In this paper, we propose the generalized drought assessment index (GDAI) based on water resources systems for assessing drought events. The GDAI considers water supply and water demand using a distributed hydrological model. We demonstrate the use of the proposed index in the Dongliao River basin in northeastern China. The results simulated by the GDAI are compared to observed drought disaster records in the Dongliao River basin. In addition, the temporal distribution of drought events and the spatial distribution of drought frequency from the GDAI are compared with the traditional approaches in general (i.e., standard precipitation index, Palmer drought severity index and rate of water deficit index). Then, generalized drought times, generalized drought duration, and generalized drought severity were calculated by theory of runs. Application of said runs at various drought levels (i.e., mild drought, moderate drought, severe drought, and extreme drought) during the period 1960–2010 shows that the centers of gravity of them all distribute in the middle reaches of Dongliao River basin, and change with time. The proposed methodology may help water managers in water-stressed regions to quantify the impact of drought, and consequently, to make decisions for coping with drought.
•15.91% of examined white yaks in China were seropositive for T. gondii antibodies.•7.25% of examined white yak tissues in China were positive for the T. gondii B1 gene.•T. gondii ToxoDB#9 was ...identified in white yaks for the first time in China.•These findings indicate a potential public health concern.
The objective of this study was to determine the seroprevalence, risk factors and genotypes of Toxoplasma gondii in white yaks (Bos grunniens) in China. A total of 974 serum samples were collected from white yaks in Tianzhu Tibetan Autonomous County (TTAC), Gansu province, northwest China for detecting T. gondii antibodies by the modified agglutination test (MAT), and 414 tissues belonging to 138 white yaks were collected for detecting T. gondii DNA by amplification of B1 gene with a semi-nested PCR. A total of 155 serum samples (15.91%) were seropositive for T. gondii antibodies at a 1:100 cut-off, and 10 DNA samples (7.25%) were positive for the T. gondii B1 gene, which were genetically characterized using multilocus PCR-RFLP. Only one genotype (ToxoDB#9) was identified from two samples with complete genotyping results. Statistically significant differences were not observed between T. gondii seroprevalence and gender, season or pregnancy in the logistic regression analysis (P>0.05). Ages of white yaks was considered as a main risk factor associated with T. gondii infection. Our results indicated a widespread exposure to T. gondii among white yaks, and revealed the genotype ToxoDB#9 of T. gondii in white yaks for the first time in China.

To utilized the baseline data of the Beijing Fangshan Family Cohort Study, and to estimate whether the association between a healthy lifestyle and arterial stiffness might be modified by genetic ...effects.
Probands and their relatives from 9 rural areas in Fangshan district, Beijing were included in this study. We developed a healthy lifestyle score based on five lifestyle behaviors: smoking, alcohol consumption, body mass index (BMI), dietary pattern, and physical activity. The measurements of arterial stiffness were brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) and ankle-brachial index (ABI). A variance component model was used to determine the heritability of arterial stiffness. Genotype-environment interaction effects were performed by the maximum likelihood methods. Subsequently, 45 candidate single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) located in the glycolipid metabolism pathway were selected, and generalized estimated equations were used to assess the gene-environment interaction effects between particular genet
