The demand for petroleum has been rising rapidly due to increasing industrialization and modernization. This economic development has led to a huge demand for energy, most of which is derived from ...fossil fuel. However, the limited reserve of fossil fuel has led many researchers to look for alternative fuels which can be produced from renewable feedstock. Increasing fossil fuel prices have prompted the global oil industry to look at biodiesel, which is from renewable energy sources. Biodiesel is produced from animal fats and vegetable oils and has become more attractive because it is more environmentally friendly and is obtained from renewable sources. Glycerol is the main by-product of biodiesel production; about 10% of the weight of biodiesel is generated in glycerol. The large amount of glycerol generated may become an environmental problem, since it cannot be disposed of in the environment. In this paper, an attempt has been made to review the different approaches and techniques used to produce glycerol (hydrolysis, transesterification, refining crude glycerol). The world biodiesel/glycerol production and consumption market, the current world glycerin and glycerol prices as well as the news trends for the use of glycerol mainly in Brazil market are analyzed. The technological production and physicochemical properties of glycerol are described, as is the characterization of crude glycerol obtained from different seed oil feedstock. Finally, a simple way to use glycerol in large amounts is combustion, which is an advantageous method as it does not require any purification. However, the combustion process of crude glycerol is not easy and there are technological difficulties. The news and mainly research about the combustion of glycerol was also addressed in this review.

The history of Chagas disease control in Peru and many other nations is marked by scattered and poorly documented vector control campaigns. The complexities of human migration and sporadic control ...campaigns complicate evaluation of the burden of Chagas disease and dynamics of Trypanosoma cruzi transmission.
We conducted a cross-sectional serological and entomological study to evaluate temporal and spatial patterns of T. cruzi transmission in a peri-rural region of La Joya, Peru. We use a multivariate catalytic model and Bayesian methods to estimate incidence of infection over time and thereby elucidate the complex history of transmission in the area. Of 1,333 study participants, 101 (7.6%; 95% CI: 6.2-9.0%) were confirmed T. cruzi seropositive. Spatial clustering of parasitic infection was found in vector insects, but not in human cases. Expanded catalytic models suggest that transmission was interrupted in the study area in 1996 (95% credible interval: 1991-2000), with a resultant decline in the average annual incidence of infection from 0.9% (95% credible interval: 0.6-1.3%) to 0.1% (95% credible interval: 0.005-0.3%). Through a search of archival newspaper reports, we uncovered documentation of a 1995 vector control campaign, and thereby independently validated the model estimates.
High levels of T. cruzi transmission had been ongoing in peri-rural La Joya prior to interruption of parasite transmission through a little-documented vector control campaign in 1995. Despite the efficacy of the 1995 control campaign, T. cruzi was rapidly reemerging in vector populations in La Joya, emphasizing the need for continuing surveillance and control at the rural-urban interface.

With increasing urbanization vector-borne diseases are quickly developing in cities, and urban control strategies are needed. If streets are shown to be barriers to disease vectors, city blocks could ...be used as a convenient and relevant spatial unit of study and control. Unfortunately, existing spatial analysis tools do not allow for assessment of the impact of an urban grid on the presence of disease agents. Here, we first propose a method to test for the significance of the impact of streets on vector infestation based on a decomposition of Moran's spatial autocorrelation index; and second, develop a Gaussian Field Latent Class model to finely describe the effect of streets while controlling for cofactors and imperfect detection of vectors. We apply these methods to cross-sectional data of infestation by the Chagas disease vector Triatoma infestans in the city of Arequipa, Peru. Our Moran's decomposition test reveals that the distribution of T. infestans in this urban environment is significantly constrained by streets (p<0.05). With the Gaussian Field Latent Class model we confirm that streets provide a barrier against infestation and further show that greater than 90% of the spatial component of the probability of vector presence is explained by the correlation among houses within city blocks. The city block is thus likely to be an appropriate spatial unit to describe and control T. infestans in an urban context. Characteristics of the urban grid can influence the spatial dynamics of vector borne disease and should be considered when designing public health policies.

Cocoa (Theobroma cacao) is the main raw material for the production of chocolate; it is considered the food of the gods, as it possesses a diversity of bioactive compounds beneficial to human health. ...The abundance of bioactive compounds, among others, is conditioned by the post-harvest processing of cocoa beans, and fermentation is a major step in this regard. Consequently, this research evaluated the changes in phenolic compounds and methylxanthines occurred in the fermentation of Criollo and CCN-51 cocoa beans, varieties of great commercial interest for the cocoa-growing areas of Peru. For this purpose, samples were taken every 12 h of cocoa beans under fermentation for 204 h in which phenols (gallic acid, caffeic acid, catechin, and epicatechin) and methylxanthines (theobromine, caffeine and theophylline) were quantified by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC); total polyphenols by Folin Ciocalteu; antioxidant capacity by DPPH free radical capture method; total anthocyanins; pH; titratable acidity; and fermentation rate of beans. We found that during fermentation, phenolic content, antioxidant activity, and methylxanthines of cocoa beans decreased; on the other hand, the anthocyanin content increased slightly. Indeed, at distinctly degree, fermentation influences bioactive compounds in cocoa beans, depending on the variety cultivated.

AbstractIn February 2014, the Malaria Elimination Working Group, in partnership with the Peruvian Ministry of Health (MoH), hosted its first international conference on malaria elimination in ...Iquitos, Peru. The 2-day meeting gathered 85 malaria experts, including 18 international panelists, 23 stakeholders from different malaria-endemic regions of Peru, and 11 MoH authorities. The main outcome was consensus that implementing a malaria elimination project in the Amazon region is achievable, but would require: 1) a comprehensive strategic plan, 2) the altering of current programmatic guidelines from control toward elimination by including symptomatic as well as asymptomatic individuals for antimalarial therapy and transmission-blocking interventions, and 3) the prioritization of community-based active case detection with proper rapid diagnostic tests to interrupt transmission. Elimination efforts must involve key stakeholders and experts at every level of government and include integrated research activities to evaluate, implement, and tailor sustainable interventions appropriate to the region.

The article reports an outbreak of cutaneous abscesses due to Mycobacterium chelonae following mesotherapy in Lima, Peru. ...From December 2004 through January 2005, 35 subjects who had participated in mesotherapy training sessions presented with persistent cutaneous abscesses. Thirteen (37%) of these suspected cases consented to undergo clinical examination. Skin punch-biopsies were collected from suspicious lesions and substances injected during mesotherapy were analyzed. Suspected cases were mainly young women and lesions included subcutaneous nodules, abscesses and ulcers. Mycobacterium chelonae was isolated from four patients and from a procaine vial. In conclusion, it is important to consider mesotherapy as a potential source of rapidly growing mycobacteria infections.
Es conocida la poca producción científica en el País comparada a la producida a nivel regional y mundial. Las sociedades médicas persiguen potenciar el desarrollo académico y científico de sus ...miembros a través del desarrollo de cursos y eventos científicos. Se revisó el total de resúmenes de trabajos de investigación presentados al Congreso Peruano de Obstetricia y ginecología (2002-2010). Se realizó una descripción de las características de las investigaciones presentadas y se describió las variables en frecuencias y porcentajes. Además, se buscó con una estrategia de búsqueda en Google Scholar la publicación de los trabajos de investigación en revistas médicas indizadas. Se evaluó 389 resúmenes, la media de autores fue de 4,37 ± 1,93; los trabajos de diseño transversal fueron de 81,7 %; seguido por los reportes de casos 6,2 %. De las especialidades del evento científico, especialidad más frecuente fue Obstetricia (54,2%) seguida de ginecología (24,9%). El establecimiento de salud más frecuente fue el Hospital Madre Niño San Bartolomé (39/389) seguida del Hospital Nacional Arzobispo Loayza (24/389). La proporción de publicación fue de 14,13% (55/389), la mayoría (87,3%) fue publicado en la Revista Peruana de Ginecología y Obstetricia del Perú. Se concluye que existe una baja publicación de los trabajos presentados en el Congreso Peruano de Ginecología y Obstetricia, a pesar de contar con un órgano de difusión. La mayor parte de publicaciones se realizan en la revista científica de la sociedad. Se debe fomentar la publicación de resultados para disminuir la publicación gris en la literatura científica. Se deben tomar medidas para estimular la publicación de los trabajos presentados.

O estudo relata um surto de abscessos cutâneos por Mycobacterium chelonae após sessões de mesoterapia em Lima, Peru. De dezembro de 2004 a janeiro de 2005, 35 pessoas que haviam passado por sessões de mesoterapia apresentaram esses abscessos cutâneos. Treze (37%) desses casos suspeitos concordaram em realizar exames clínicos. Foram realizadas biópsias de punção de pele de lesões suspeitas e examinadas substâncias injetadas durante a mesoterapia. Os casos suspeitos eram predominantemente mulheres jovens e as lesões incluíram nódulos subcutâneos, abscessos e úlceras. Mycobacterium chelonae foi isolada de quatro pacientes e de um frasco de procaína. Em conclusão, é importante considerar a mesoterapia como fonte potencial de infecções de micobactérias de crescimento rápido.
Objetivos: Determinar la distribución geográfica y el comportamiento estacional de la picadura del Anopheles darlingi en localidades de San Pedro, La Novia, Shiringayoc y Mavila del departamento de ...Madre de Dios. Materiales y métodos: En estas 4 localidades, durante el periodo comprendido entre junio de 2001 y abril de 2002, se realizó la inspección de criaderos, colecta de larvas de Anopheles darlingi por el método del cucharón y la colecta de mosquitos adultos por el método cebo humano (intradomicilio y peridomicilio), trampa Shannon y refugio animal (extradomicilio). Se construyó un mapa de ubicación geográfica del vector, calculándose los indicadores: criadero positivo y densidad larvaria por cucharonada, índice de picadura hombre noche (IPHN), indice de picadura hombre hora (IPHH), índice esporozoítico y tasa de paridad. Resultados: Se demostró la presencia de Anopheles darlingi en las localidades de San Pedro, La Novia y Mavila. Las especies inmaduras representaron menos del 12% de las larvas encontradas en los criaderos permanentes. El IPHN en las tres localidades se incrementó en la estación lluviosa (diciembre-abril). La picadura del Anopheles darlingi tuvo un comportamiento ematofágico unimodal, con picos de IPHH entre las 20.00 y 23.00 horas en San Pedro y La Novia; y entre las 20.00 y 22.00 horas en Mavila. Conclusiones: El Anopheles darlingi presenta mayor densidad poblacional en los meses de estación lluviosa, presentando un comportamiento de picadura unimodal con mayor actividad hematofágica entre las 20.00 y 23.00 horas.
