Coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CEνNS) offers a valuable approach in searching for physics beyond the standard model. The

experiment aims to perform a precision measurement of ...the CEνNS spectrum at the Institut Laue–Langevin nuclear reactor with cryogenic solid-state detectors. The experiment plans to employ an array of cryogenic thermal detectors, each with a mass of around 30 g and an energy threshold of below 100 eV. The array includes nine detectors read out by transition-edge sensors (TES). These TES-based detectors will also serve as demonstrators for future neutrino experiments with thousands of detectors. In this article, we present an update on the characterization and modeling of a prototype TES detector.

AlMn transition-edge sensors (TESs) have been developed as sensitive thermometers for the Q-Array, which will use superconducting targets to measure the coherent elastic neutrino nucleus ...scattering spectrum in the RICOCHET experiment. The TESs are made of manganese-doped aluminum with a titanium and gold antioxidation layer. In high energy physics experiments, calorimeters are calibrated to produce precise and accurate results. Laser light can be used for calibration when the detectors are sensitive to photons in that ...particular energy range, which is often the case. Moreover, it is not unusual that detection systems consist of hundreds of channels that have to be calibrated independently, which produce stringent requirements on the light distribution system in terms of temporal and spatial stability, energy distribution and timing. Furthermore, the economic factor and the ease of production have to be taken into account. We present a prototype light distribution system, based on a series of optical beamsplitters, developed for the Muon g-2 experiment at Fermilab.
The Muon g−2 Experiment at Fermilab is expected to start data taking in 2017. It will measure the muon anomalous magnetic moment, aμ=(gμ−2)/2 to an unprecedented precision: the goal is 0.14 parts per ...million (ppm). The new experiment will require upgrades of detectors, electronics and data acquisition equipment to handle the much higher data volumes and slightly higher instantaneous rates. In particular, it will require a continuous monitoring and state-of-art calibration of the detectors, whose response may vary on both the millisecond and hour long timescale. The calibration system is composed of six laser sources and a light distribution system will provide short light pulses directly into each crystal (54) of the 24 calorimeters which measure energy and arrival time of the decay positrons. A Laser Control board will manage the interface between the experiment and the laser source, allowing the generation of light pulses according to specific needs including detector calibration, study of detector performance in running conditions, evaluation of DAQ performance. Here we present and discuss the main features of the Laser Control board.
The anomalous muon dipole magnetic moment can be measured (and calculated) with great precision thus providing insight on the Standard Model and new physics. Currently an experiment is under ...construction at Fermilab (U.S.A.) which is expected to measure the anomalous muon dipole magnetic moment with unprecedented precision. One of the improvements with respect to the previous experiments is expected to come from the laser calibration system which has been designed and constructed by the Italian part of the collaboration (INFN). An emphasis of this paper will be on the calibration system that is in the final stages of construction as well as the experiment which is expected to start data taking this year.
STRONG, rapidly rotating, persistent bars readily form in numerical simulations of initially axisymmetric disk galaxies. The global dynamical instability responsible for this behaviour is a great ...embarrassment to the subject of galactic dynamics, as most galaxies in the sky do not possess a strong bar; the suggestion that the dark matter content of galaxies might resolve this discrepancy is unattractive. Here we present the results of three-dimensional simulations which show that the bar is dynamically unstable to buckling out of the galactic plane (the majority of previous disk galaxy simulations have been strictly two-dimensional). Stars acquire large motions normal to the plane, giving the bar a peanut shape through a mechanism that we suggest to be the fire-hose instability. Bars may be weakened or even destroyed by this instability; thus the fraction of disk galaxies containing strong bars today could be lower than the fraction in which they have formed in the past. The instability may also account for the peanut morphology of many galaxies, and because it leads to a less flattened stellar system with increased central density, it may play a part in the formation of galactic bulges. We searched for the μ+μ− decay of a light vector gauge boson, also known as dark photon, in the e+e−→μ+μ−γISR process by means of the Initial State Radiation (ISR) method. We used 1.93 fb−1 of data ...collected by the KLOE experiment at the DAΦNE ϕ-factory. No structures have been observed over the irreducible μ+μ− background. A 90% CL limit on the ratio ε2=α′/α between the dark coupling constant and the fine structure constant of 3×10−6–2×10−7 has been set in the dark photon mass region between 519 MeV and 973 MeV. This new limit has been combined with the published result obtained investigating the hypothesis of the dark photon decaying into hadrons in e+e−→π+π−γISR events. The combined 90% CL limit increases the sensitivity especially in the ρ–ω interference region and excludes ε2 greater than (13−2)×10−7. For dark photon masses greater than 600 MeV the combined limit is lower than 8 ×10−7 resulting more stringent than present constraints from other experiments.

We report the test of many of the key elements of the laser-based calibration system for muon g - 2 experiment E989 at Fermilab. The test was performed at the Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati's Beam ...Test Facility using a 450MeV electron beam impinging on a small subset of the final g - 2 lead-fluoride crystal calorimeter system. The calibration system was configured as planned for the E989 experiment and uses the same type of laser and most of the final optical elements. We show results regarding the calorimeter's response calibration, the maximum equivalent electron energy which can be provided by the laser and the stability of the calibration system components.

The Muon g–2 experiment at Fermilab (E989) plans to measure the muon anomalous magnetic moment to a precision of 140 parts per billion (ppb), which corresponds to a total uncertainty of 1.6×10−10. To ...achieve this level of precision the experiment must detect more than 1.8×1011 decay positrons by using the 24 calorimeters distributed around the muon storage ring. Each calorimeter consists of 54PbF2 crystals read out by SiPMs. The response of each of the 1296 channels must be calibrated and monitored to keep uncertainties due to gain fluctuations at the sub-per mil level in the time interval corresponding to one beam fill (700μs) and at the sub-percent level on longer time scales. These requirements are much more demanding than those needed by most high energy physics experiments. This paper presents a novel laser-based calibration system that distributes light to all calorimeter cells, while allowing one to correct for laser intensity fluctuations and to monitor the distribution chain stability at unprecedented levels of accuracy. Results on the system performance during the first few months of stored muon operation in 2018 are also presented.
