Wind and solar power are known to be highly influenced by weather events and may ramp up or down abruptly. Such events in the power production influence not only the availability of energy, but also ...the stability of the entire power grid. By analysing significant amounts of data from several regions around the world with resolutions of seconds to minutes, we provide strong evidence that renewable wind and solar sources exhibit multiple types of variability and nonlinearity in the time scale of seconds and characterise their stochastic properties. In contrast to previous findings, we show that only the jumpy characteristic of renewable sources decreases when increasing the spatial size over which the renewable energies are harvested. Otherwise, the strong non-Gaussian, intermittent behaviour in the cumulative power of the total field survives even for a country-wide distribution of the systems. The strong fluctuating behaviour of renewable wind and solar sources can be well characterised by Kolmogorov-like power spectra and q-exponential probability density functions. Using the estimated potential shape of power time series, we quantify the jumpy or diffusive dynamic of the power. Finally we propose a time delayed feedback technique as a control algorithm to suppress the observed short term non-Gaussian statistics in spatially strong correlated and intermittent renewable sources.

This study compared the fundamental properties of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) and cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) extracted from sugarcane bagasse. Conventional hydrolysis was used to extract CNC while ...ball milling was used to extract CNF. Images generated by scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope showed CNC was needle-like with relatively lower aspect ratio and CNF was rope-like in structure with higher aspect ratio. Fourier-transformed infrared spectra showed that the chemical composition of nanocellulose and extracted cellulose were identical and quite different from bagasse. Dynamic light scattering studies showed that CNC had uniform particle size distribution with a median size of 148 nm while CNF had a bimodal size distribution with median size 240 12 nm and 10 m. X-ray diffraction showed that the amorphous portion was removed during hydrolysis; this resulted in an increase in the crystalline portion of CNC compared to CNF. Thermal degradation of cellulose initiated at a much lower temperature, in the case of the nanocrystals while the CNF prepared by ball milling were not affected, indicating higher thermal stability.

An efficient simultaneous sonophotocatalytic degradation of trypan blue (TB) and vesuvine (VS) using Ag3PO4/Bi2S3-HKUST-1-MOF as a novel visible light active photocatalyst was carried out successfully in a continuous flow-loop reactor equipped to blue LED light. Ag3PO4/Bi2S3-HKUST-1-MOF with activation ability under blue light illumination was synthesized and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), photoluminescence (PL) and diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS). The effect of operational parameters such as the initial TB and VS concentration (5–45mg/L), flow rate (30–110mL/min), irradiation and sonication time (10–30min), pH (3–11) and photocatalyst dosage (0.15–0.35g/L) has been investigated and optimized using central composite design (CCD) combined with desirability function (DF). Maximum sonophotodegradation percentage (98.44% and 99.36% for TB and VS, respectively) was found at optimum condition set as: 25mg/L of each dye, 70mL/min of solution flow rate, 25min of irradiation and sonication time, pH 6 and 0.25g/L of photocatalyst dosage. At optimum conditions, synergistic index value was obtained 2.53 that indicated the hybrid systems including ultrasound irradiation and photocatalysis have higher efficiency compared with sum of the individual processes.

In the present study, numerical investigation of hotspot heat transfer in a microchannel pin-fin hybrid heat sink is accomplished. The proposed heat sink consists of 20 microchannels at background zone and 143 pin-fins at hotspot zone. Therefore, the effect of parameters including geometrical properties (pin-fin shape, pin-fin angle and microchannel wall wave amplitude), Reynolds number and hotspot heat flux on different decisive parameters of heat sinks are investigated. Parameters such as average pressure drop, pumping power, mean absolute temperature difference (MATD) at background zone, MATD at hotspot zone and thermal resistance are considered as performance parameters. The results show that rectangular pin-fin with rounded edges have better thermal performance than NACA airfoil. Besides, increasing the NACA airfoil angle increases the heat transfer and consequently leads to decrease in hotspot temperature. Also, numerical results show that increasing the wall wave amplitude increases the heat transfer rate.

A combined experimental and numerical study has been designed to study thermal behavior and heat transfer characteristics of Paraffin RT50 as a phase change material (PCM) during constrained melting ...and solidification processes inside a shell and tube heat exchanger. A series of experiments are conducted to investigate the effects of increasing the inlet temperature of the heat transfer fluid (HTF) on the charging and discharging processes of the PCM. The computations are based on an iterative, finite-volume numerical procedure that incorporates a single-domain enthalpy formulation for simulation of the phase change phenomenon. The molten front at various times of process has been studied through a numerical simulation. The experimental results show that by increasing the inlet HTF temperature from TH=70°C to 75 and 80°C, theoretical efficiency in charging and discharging processes rises from 81.1% to 88.4% and from 79.7% to 81.4% respectively.

This review addresses a central question in the field of complex systems: given a fluctuating (in time or space), sequentially measured set of experimental data, how should one analyze the data, ...assess their underlying trends, and discover the characteristics of the fluctuations that generate the experimental traces? In recent years, significant progress has been made in addressing this question for a class of stochastic processes that can be modeled by Langevin equations, including additive as well as multiplicative fluctuations or noise. Important results have emerged from the analysis of temporal data for such diverse fields as neuroscience, cardiology, finance, economy, surface science, turbulence, seismic time series and epileptic brain dynamics, to name but a few. Furthermore, it has been recognized that a similar approach can be applied to the data that depend on a length scale, such as velocity increments in fully developed turbulent flow, or height increments that characterize rough surfaces. A basic ingredient of the approach to the analysis of fluctuating data is the presence of a Markovian property, which can be detected in real systems above a certain time or length scale. This scale is referred to as the
Markov–Einstein (ME) scale, and has turned out to be a useful characteristic of complex systems. We provide a review of the operational methods that have been developed for analyzing stochastic data in time and scale. We address in detail the following issues: (i) reconstruction of stochastic evolution equations from data in terms of the Langevin equations or the corresponding Fokker–Planck equations and (ii) intermittency, cascades, and multiscale correlation functions.

Abstract
We compute the spherically averaged power spectrum from four seasons of data obtained for the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) project observed with the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA). We ...measure the EoR power spectrum over k = 0.07–3.0 h Mpc−1 at redshifts $z$ = 6.5–8.7. The largest aggregation of 110 h on EoR0 high band (3340 observations), yields a lowest measurement of (43 mK)2 = 1.8 × 103 mK2 at k = 0.14 h Mpc−1 and $z$ = 6.5 (2σ thermal noise plus sample variance). Using the Real-Time System to calibrate and the CHIPS pipeline to estimate power spectra, we select the best observations from the central five pointings within the 2013–2016 observing seasons, observing three independent fields and in two frequency bands. This yields 13 591 2-min snapshots (453 h), based on a quality assurance metric that measures ionospheric activity. We perform another cut to remove poorly calibrated data, based on power in the foreground-dominated and EoR-dominated regions of the two-dimensional power spectrum, reducing the set to 12 569 observations (419 h). These data are processed in groups of 20 observations, to retain the capacity to identify poor data, and used to analyse the evolution and structure of the data over field, frequency, and data quality. We subsequently choose the cleanest 8935 observations (298 h of data) to form integrated power spectra over the different fields, pointings, and redshift ranges.
The presence of antibiotics in waste and drinking water is causing increasing concern around the world, thereby an advanced sustainable technology needs to be developed to eliminate the antibiotics ...from water resources. Hence, an efficient spinning disc photoreactor (SDPR) equipped with visible light-activated Ag/Ag2O/TiO2 heterostructure thin film photocatalyst was assessed for the degradation of amoxicillin (AMX) as a typical antibiotic. The surface morphology, optoelectronic and structural features of Ag/Ag2O/TiO2 heterojunction were characterized by TEM, BET, mott Schottky, FESEM, EDS, AFM, XRD, UV–Vis-DRS, and contact angle measurements. Results confirm that Ag and Ag2O have a significant effect on the photocharge carrier separation and transfer of the as-developed photocatalyst system. The operative variables including illumination time, rotational speed, solution flow rate, aeration rate, pH, and initial AMX concentration were optimized by CCD. The results displayed the maximum AMX photodegradation (97.91%) could be achieved at optimal conditions involving illumination time of 80 min, a rotational speed of 225 rpm, the solution flow rate of 0.6 L/min, aeration rate of 20 L/min, pH = 6, and initial AMX concentration of 20 mg/L. Interestingly, more than 79% COD and 64% TOC were removed under optimum conditions during 80 min illumination time, respectively. Active species tests confirmed the dominant role of ·OH and ·O2− in AMX degradation. finally, the XRD pattern confirmed that the reusability assessments of the heterojunction film could successfully retain its stability for six consecutive photocatalytic degradation runs. This work demonstrates the feasibility of utilizing visible-light-driven thin-film photocatalysts in spinning disc photoreactors in treating the tenacious antibiotic pollutants.

Measurements of 21 cm Epoch of Reionization (EoR) structure are subject to systematics originating from both the analysis and the observation conditions. Using 2013 data from the Murchison Widefield ...Array (MWA), we show the importance of mitigating both sources of contamination. A direct comparison between results from Beardsley et al. and our updated analysis demonstrates new precision techniques, lowering analysis systematics by a factor of 2.8 in power. We then further lower systematics by excising observations contaminated by ultra-faint RFI, reducing by an additional factor of 3.8 in power for the zenith pointing. With this enhanced analysis precision and newly developed RFI mitigation, we calculate a noise-dominated upper limit on the EoR structure of Δ2 ≤ 3.9 × 103 mK2 at k = 0.20 h Mpc−1 and z = 7 using 21 hr of data, improving previous MWA limits by almost an order of magnitude.
