Bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) affects bovine production and reproduction causing significant economic losses all over the world. Two viral species has been recognized: BVDV-1 and BVDV-2, both ...distributed worldwide. Recently, novel specie of BVDV named HoBi-like pestivirus was discovered. The presence of BVDV was confirmed in 1996 in Uruguay, however, does not exist until today a schedule of compulsory vaccination along the country. Serological studies with samples from all Uruguayan herds were performed during 2000 and 2001 demonstrating that all of them were seropositive to BVDV with a mean prevalence of 69 %. In addition, there have been no new studies done since those previously described and it is important to mention that the genetic diversity of BVD has never been described in Uruguay. Nowadays, there is strongly suspect that BVDV is one of the most important causes of reproductive failures in our herds. The aim of this study was to describe for the first time in Uruguay the genetic diversity of BVDV with samples collected from different regions along the country. Serological status of 390 non-vaccinated animals against BVDV with reproductive problems from farms of Rivera, Tacuarembó and Florida departments of Uruguay were studied. All herds were seropositive to BVDV and high proportion of animals were positive (298/390), while 4.1 % (16/390) of the animals were positive to Antigen Capture ELISA test and Real Time PCR. Phylogenetic analysis performed with concatenated sequences from the 5′UTR and Npro genomic regions revealed that BVDV-1 and BVDV-2 are infecting our herds, being BVDV-1 the most frequently found. The major subtype was BVDV-1a, followed by BVDV-1i and BVDV-2b. This is the first study that describes the genetic diversity of BVDV in Uruguay and it will contribute to the elaboration of sanitization programs.

In this Letter, comprehensive results on π±, K±, KS0, p(p¯) and Λ(Λ¯) production at mid-rapidity (0<yCMS<0.5) in p–Pb collisions at sNN=5.02 TeV, measured by the ALICE detector at the LHC, are ...reported. The transverse momentum distributions exhibit a hardening as a function of event multiplicity, which is stronger for heavier particles. This behavior is similar to what has been observed in pp and Pb–Pb collisions at the LHC. The measured pT distributions are compared to d–Au, Au–Au and Pb–Pb results at lower energy and with predictions based on QCD-inspired and hydrodynamic models.

The frequency of urban flood events denotes that a pattern of rational urban occupation is of particular importance in flooding events on those areas. This research proposes an approach based on ...radar images to identify the variable areas of affluence (AVA) in urban watersheds of Uberlandia and its influence on the superficial runoff. AVA represent the flow dynamics of small areas in the basin and their behavior during precipitation events and how it affects the flow in urban basins, as they can suffer variations in shape according to the frequency, intensity and the interval between raining events. This makes it difficult to delimit these areas and, for this study, radar images from Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) and 1: 25,000 digital elevation models were used to calculate the Topographic Wetness Index (TWI) associated with the model Height Above Drain (HAND). The results were compared with the TAUDEM flow accumulation model to identify changes in discharge concentration and AVA. The results of the study show a variation of 15% to 21% of the value of the areas for the urban basins evaluated in the city of Uberlandia. This indicates that the assessment of the spatial variability of satellite radar images can serve to delineate the AVA and indicate the potential of occupation in urban basins in order to prevent floods by defining them as special zones in the master plans

The role of the basolateral complex of the amygdala (BLA) in recognition memory remains poorly understood. The mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) in the BLA and other brain areas has been implicated in synaptic plasticity and memory. We have recently shown that mTOR signaling in both the BLA and the dorsal hippocampus (DH) is required for formation and reconsolidation of inhibitory avoidance, a fear-motivated memory task. Here we examined the effects of infusions of the mTOR inhibitor rapamycin into the BLA before or after either training or reactivation on retention of novel object recognition (NOR) memory in rats, and compared the effects with those obtained using intra-DH infusions. Male Wistar rats received bilateral infusions of vehicle or rapamycin into the BLA or DH before or after NOR training or reactivation. Rapamycin impaired NOR retention tested 24
h after training when given either before or immediately after training into the BLA or DH. Rapamycin also impaired retention measured 24
h after reactivation when infused before reactivation into the BLA or DH, or immediately after reactivation into the BLA, but not when given 6
h after reactivation into either the BLA or DH. The results suggest that mTOR signaling in the BLA and DH is involved in NOR memory formation and stabilization.

There is growing clinical evidence of cognitive impairment in cancer patients treated with chemotherapy, especially in women treated with drug combinations for breast cancer. Clinical studies have a ...difficult task of defining which drugs individually are responsible for the cognitive changes and published papers evaluating single agents in experimental models are scanty. In the present study we have investigated the effect of single escalating doses of doxorubicin (DOX) on memory for inhibitory avoidance conditioning (IA) in rats. The doses used were comparable to those applied in the clinic. When given systemically before training, higher doses of DOX impaired IA memory retention measured 24
h and 7
days, but not 3
h after training. DOX did not affect IA retention when given either before or after training in a multiple-trial IA training protocol. Control experiments showed that DOX produced a decrease in exploratory behavior assessed by the number of rearings performed during exploration of an open field. The results indicate that a single systemic administration of DOX might impair long-term aversive learning.

The elliptic, v2, triangular, v3, and quadrangular, v4, azimuthal anisotropic flow coefficients are measured for unidentified charged particles, pions, and (anti-)protons in Pb–Pb collisions at ...sNN=2.76 TeV with the ALICE detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Results obtained with the event plane and four-particle cumulant methods are reported for the pseudo-rapidity range |η|<0.8 at different collision centralities and as a function of transverse momentum, pT, out to pT=20 GeV/c. The observed non-zero elliptic and triangular flow depends only weakly on transverse momentum for pT>8 GeV/c. The small pT dependence of the difference between elliptic flow results obtained from the event plane and four-particle cumulant methods suggests a common origin of flow fluctuations up to pT=8 GeV/c. The magnitude of the (anti-)proton elliptic and triangular flow is larger than that of pions out to at least pT=8 GeV/c indicating that the particle type dependence persists out to high pT.

The production of Ξ− and Ω− baryons and their anti-particles in Pb–Pb collisions at sNN=2.76 TeV has been measured using the ALICE detector. The transverse momentum spectra at mid-rapidity (|y|<0.5) ...for charged Ξ and Ω hyperons have been studied in the range 0.6<pT<8.0 GeV/c and 1.2<pT<7.0 GeV/c, respectively, and in several centrality intervals (from the most central 0–10% to the most peripheral 60–80% collisions). These spectra have been compared with the predictions of recent hydrodynamic models. In particular, the Kraków and EPOS models give a satisfactory description of the data, with the latter covering a wider pT range. Mid-rapidity yields, integrated over pT, have been determined. The hyperon-to-pion ratios are similar to those at RHIC: they rise smoothly with centrality up to 〈Npart〉∼150 and saturate thereafter. The enhancements (yields per participant nucleon relative to those in pp collisions) increase both with the strangeness content of the baryon and with centrality, but are less pronounced than at lower energies.

Hard exclusive electroproduction of
ω
mesons is studied with the HERMES spectrometer at the DESY laboratory by scattering 27.6 GeV positron and electron beams off a transversely polarized hydrogen ...target. The amplitudes of five azimuthal modulations of the single-spin asymmetry of the cross section with respect to the transverse proton polarization are measured. They are determined in the entire kinematic region as well as for two bins in photon virtuality and momentum transfer to the nucleon. Also, a separation of asymmetry amplitudes into longitudinal and transverse components is done. These results are compared to a phenomenological model that includes the pion pole contribution. Within this model, the data favor a positive
π
ω
transition form factor.
