The proton is one of the main building blocks of all visible matter in the Universe

. The electric charge and spin of protons, which are shared among the quarks, have been investigated previously using electron scattering
. An example is the highly precise measurement of the electric charge radius of the proton
. By contrast, little is known about the inner mass density of the proton, which is dominated by the energy carried by gluons. Gluons are hard to access using electron scattering because they do not carry an electromagnetic charge. Here we investigated the gravitational density of gluons using a small colour dipole, through the threshold photoproduction of the J/ψ particle. We determined the gluonic gravitational form factors of the proton
from our measurement. We used a variety of models
and determined, in all cases, a mass radius that is notably smaller than the electric charge radius. In some, but not all cases, depending on the model, the determined radius agrees well with first-principle predictions from lattice quantum chromodynamics
. This work paves the way for a deeper understanding of the salient role of gluons in providing gravitational mass to visible matter.

To i) document the sensitivity and specificity of a combined scintigraphic/lactulose breath hydrogen test for small intestinal bacterial overgrowth and ii) investigate the validity of currently ...accepted definitions of an abnormal lactulose breath hydrogen test based on "double peaks" in breath hydrogen concentrations.
Twenty-eight subjects were investigated with culture of proximal small intestinal aspirate and a 10-g lactulose breath hydrogen test combined with scintigraphy. Gastroduodenal pH, the presence or absence of gastric bacterial overgrowth, and the in vitro capability of overgrowth flora to ferment lactulose were determined.
Sensitivity (16.7%) and specificity (70.0%) of the lactulose breath hydrogen test alone for small intestinal bacterial overgrowth were poor. Combination with scintigraphy resulted in 100% specificity, because double peaks in serial breath hydrogen concentrations may occur as a result of lactulose fermentation by cecal bacteria. Sensitivity increased to 38.9% with scintigraphy, because a single rise in breath hydrogen concentrations, commencing before the test meal reaches the cecum, may occur in this disorder. Sensitivity remained suboptimal irrespective of the definition of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth used, the nature of the overgrowth flora, favorable luminal pH, the presence of concurrent gastric bacterial overgrowth, or the in vitro ability of the overgrowth flora to ferment lactulose.
Definitions of an abnormal lactulose breath hydrogen test based on the occurrence of double peaks in breath hydrogen concentrations are inappropriate. Not even the addition of scintigraphy renders this test a clinically useful alternative to culture of aspirate for diagnosing small intestinal bacterial overgrowth.
Fumonisins were monitored in corn grain collected from Bt hybrids grown in 107 locations across the United States in 2000−2002. Bt corn hybrids contain the Cry1Ab protein from Bacillus thuringiensis ...that controls European corn borers and other stalk-boring pests. Fumonisin levels were frequently lower in grain from Bt hybrids grown in field trials under conditions of natural (FACT trials) or manual insect infestation (university trials). Over three years of FACT trials, there were 126/210 comparisons when fumonisin levels in grain from control hybrids were >2 ppm, exceeding U.S. FDA guidance levels of 2 ppm for human food. Grain from Bt hybrids was at or below 2 ppm of fumonisins for 58 of the 126 comparisons. The use of Bt hybrids can increase the percentage of corn grain that would be suitable for use in food and feed. A 42-d experiment compared the nutritional value of genetically modified glyphosate-tolerant (Roundup Ready event RT73) canola meal to that of conventional canola meal when fed to rapidly growing ...Ross x Ross 508 broilers using a randomized complete block design. Five pens of males and 5 pens of females were used in each of 8 canola meal treatments (glyphosate-tolerant, nontransgenic control, and 6 commercial varieties). Broilers (10 birds/pen) were fed approximately 25% wt/wt canola meal during the first 20 d and 20% wt/wt canola meal thereafter. In general, performance response variables for glyphosate-tolerant canola meal were not different (P > 0.05) than those for the nontransgenic and commercial canola meals. Carcass fat pad, breast meat, thighs, legs, and wings (on a percentage basis) were similar across treatments (P > 0.05). Expressed as percentage of live weight, chill weight of the broilers fed diets containing glyphosate-tolerant canola meal was not different from those fed all other diets, but some differences were observed between the nontransgenic control and commercial diets. No major differences were observed in percentage of moisture, protein, and fat in breast or thigh meat (P > 0.05) across treatments. Comparisons of the glyphosate-tolerant canola diet to the population of all other diets (combining sexes) showed no major differences (P > 0.05) in performance, carcass yields, or moisture, protein, and fat in breast and thigh meat. Broilers fed diets containing glyphosate-tolerant canola meal had similar growth performance to birds fed nontransgenic control and commercial canola diets.

This 42-day experiment was undertaken to compare the nutritional value of insect-protected corn event MON810 (YieldGard) and YieldGard x herbicide-tolerant corn event GA21 (Roundup Ready) to their ...nontransgenic controls as well as four different commercial reference corns, when fed to growing Cobb x Cobb broilers. A randomized complete block design was used, and each treatment was replicated with five pens of males and five pens of females with 10 broilers per pen. Broilers were fed approximately 55% wt/wt corn during the first 20 d and approximately 60% wt/wt corn thereafter. The corn component of diets fed to broilers was supplied entirely with grain from the eight hybrids included in the experiment. Final live weights averaged 2.09 kg/bird fed YieldGard corn and 2.15 kg/bird fed YieldGard x Roundup Ready corn and were not different (P > 0.05) from final weights for birds fed control or commercial corn. Feed conversion was not affected (P > 0.05) by YieldGard (1.72) or YieldGard x Roundup Ready (1.77) corn feeding when compared with the feeding of other corn diets. Chill weights, fat pad, thigh weights, and wing weights were not affected by diets (P > 0.05). Differences (P < 0.05) were noted for breast and drum weights across treatments. Broilers overall performed consistently and had similar carcass yield and meat composition when fed diets containing YieldGard (event MON810) or YieldGard (event MON810) x Roundup Ready (event GA21) as compared with their nontransgenic controls and commercial diets.

In recent years, considerable progress has been made in developing specific and supportive medical measures that have improved prognosis in FHF. Although new techniques for cell culture and perfusion ...have also resulted in a number of promising devices for the provision of temporary liver support, their clinical efficacy is as yet uncertain. Controlled multicenter trials in well-defined patient groups and with standardized outcome measures will be essential to evaluate the clinical value of these devices properly. The same considerations must also apply in assessing the efficacy of hepatocyte transplantation in FHF. A better understanding of mechanisms responsible for liver cell death and multiorgan failure, and the development of strategies to enhance liver regeneration may, in the future, allow a more targeted approach to therapy.
Background: The influence of luminal bacteria on small-intestinal permeability has not been fully assessed. This study addressed this issue. Methods: Thirty-four subjects (mean age 64 years; range ...22-95 years) were investigated for possible small-intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) with culture of a small-intestinal aspirate. A lactulose/mannitol small-intestinal permeability test was performed, small-intestinal histology assessed and serum vitamin B12 concentrations measured in all subjects. Permeability was also assessed in a control group of 34 asymptomatic volunteers. Results: Urinary lactulose/mannitol ratios were significantly increased in subjects with SIBO with colonic-type flora (JP < 0.0005), even in the absence of villous atrophy. Urinary lactulose/mannitol ratios were increased in this group due to significantly increased urinary lactulose concentrations (P < 0.0005) rather than reduced urinary mannitol levels, after correcting for inter-subject variations in renal function. Counts of intraepithelial lymphocytes of CD8 phenotype were significantly increased in this group (P = 0.003). Although a significant correlation was found between intraepithelial lymphocyte counts and small-intestinal permeability overall (P < 0.002), these counts were not significantly different in subjects with SIBO with colonic-type flora whose permeability values were ≤ or ≥0.028, the upper limit of normal in asymptomatic controls. Serum vitamin B12 concentrations did not differ significantly between groups (P > 0.5). Ageing did not independently influence small-intestinal permeability (P>0.5). Conclusions: Small-intestinal permeability is increased in subjects with SIBO with colonic-type bacteria. This effect is independent of ageing and not mediated by vitamin B12 deficiency. Although counts of intraepithelial lymphocytes of CDS phenotype are increased in this disorder, it is also unlikely that these cells play an important causative role in this process. Routine light microscopic assessment underestimates the prevalence of small-intestinal functional disturbance in this disorder.
A new method to tag the barium daughter in the double-beta decay of ^{136}Xe is reported. Using the technique of single molecule fluorescent imaging (SMFI), individual barium dication (Ba^{++}) ...resolution at a transparent scanning surface is demonstrated. A single-step photobleach confirms the single ion interpretation. Individual ions are localized with superresolution (∼2 nm), and detected with a statistical significance of 12.9σ over backgrounds. This lays the foundation for a new and potentially background-free neutrinoless double-beta decay technology, based on SMFI coupled to high pressure xenon gas time projection chambers.
