Given the increase of women with excess weight or obesity and its possible effects on birth weight, the present study aimed to investigate the association between pregestational maternal body mass ...index (BMI) and birth weight in a birth cohort from Ribeirão Preto, SP, Brazil. This was a prospective study conducted on 1362 mother-child pairs involving singleton births. The women were evaluated using standardized questionnaires during the second trimester of pregnancy and at the time of childbirth. Information about the newborns was obtained from their medical records. The dependent variable was birth weight, categorized as low, adequate, or high. The independent variable was pregestational maternal BMI, categorized as malnutrition, adequate weight, overweight, and obesity. A multinomial regression model was used to estimate the crude and adjusted relative risk (RR) of low and high birth weight. A high frequency of pregestational excess weight (39.6%) was detected and found to be independently associated with high birth weight (RR=2.13, 95%CI: 1.19-3.80 for overweight and RR=3.34, 95%CI: 1.80-6.19 for obese pregnant women). There was no association between pregestational malnutrition and low birth weight (RR=1.70; 95%CI: 0.81-3.55). The present data showed a high rate of women with excess pregestational weight, supporting the hypothesis that pregestational BMI may contribute to high birth weight babies and indicating the need for actions aiming to prevent excessive weight in women at reproductive age.

The use of ohmic heating (OH, 4, 8, or 12 V/cm, 72–75 °C/15 s) for pasteurization of milk intended for the manufacture of Minas Frescal cheese was investigated. The cheeses were characterized for the gross composition, bioactive compounds (antioxidant, antihypertensive and antidiabetic activities), fatty acid profile, rheological parameters, volatiles profile, and sensory acceptance. OH decreased the elasticity, hardness, and firmness while improved the sensory acceptance of Minas Frescal cheese. In addition, higher antioxidant, antihypertensive and antidiabetic activities values as well as higher concentrations of short, medium and long-chain fatty acids were observed. Overall, OH can be considered a suitable technology to be used in milk for the Minas Frescal cheese processing.

This study tested the usability of a home-based self-administration transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) device designed specifically for women's health needs. This is a single center ...triple blinded clinical usability study for a new wireless, Bluetooth-controlled wearable tDCS device for women's health. The study aims to evaluate the usability and effective blinding of a home-based tDCS system. A total of forty-nine women of reproductive age were randomly allocated (1:1) to receive one session of active tDCS (n = 24) or sham tDCS (n = 25) over the motor and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. Each participant self-administered one 20-minute session without supervision following guidance on a software application alone. The System Usability Scale (SUS) and the Patient Global Impression of Change (PGIC) were used to evaluate the usability of the system. Regardless of sham or active conditions, all users found the system easy to use without the support of researchers. Usability scores were considered to be "excellent" in both groups and no significant difference was found between sham and active groups showing effective blinding of the device (Active group: 93.7 (83.1-97.5); Sham group 90 (86.2-95) p = 0.79) and PGIC (Active group: 2 (1-2.75); Sham group 2 (1-2) p = 0.99) using an unpaired t-test or non-parametric statistical tests accordingly. The new Bluetooth-controlled wearable tDCS device is easy, safe to use and completely controlled by a smartphone app. This device is focused on women's health and will be tested as an alternative treatment for chronic pelvic pain and mood disturbance associated with menstrual cycles in further research.

Given their remarkable beneficial effects on plant growth, several Azospirillum isolates currently integrate the formulations of various commercial inoculants. Our research group isolated a new ...strain, Azospirillum sp. UENF-412522, from passion fruit rhizoplane. This isolate uses carbon sources that are partially distinct from closely-related Azospirillum isolates. Scanning electron microscopy analysis and population counts demonstrate the ability of Azospirillum sp. UENF-412522 to colonize the surface of passion fruit roots. In vitro assays demonstrate the ability of Azospirillum sp. UENF-412522 to fix atmospheric nitrogen, to solubilize phosphate and to produce indole-acetic acid. Passion fruit plantlets inoculated with Azospirillum sp. UENF-41255 showed increased shoot and root fresh matter by 13,8% and 88,6% respectively, as well as root dry matter by 61,4%, further highlighting its biotechnological potential for agriculture. We sequenced the genome of Azospirillum sp. UENF-412522 to investigate the genetic basis of its plant-growth promotion properties. We identified the key nif genes for nitrogen fixation, the complete PQQ operon for phosphate solubilization, the acdS gene that alleviates ethylene effects on plant growth, and the napCAB operon, which produces nitrite under anoxic conditions. We also found several genes conferring resistance to common soil antibiotics, which are critical for Azospirillum sp. UENF-412522 survival in the rhizosphere. Finally, we also assessed the Azospirillum pangenome and highlighted key genes involved in plant growth promotion. A phylogenetic reconstruction of the genus was also conducted. Our results support Azospirillum sp. UENF-412522 as a good candidate for bioinoculant formulations focused on plant growth promotion in sustainable systems.

Objective
To evaluate whether colchicine treatment was associated with the inhibition of NLRP3 inflammasome activation in patients with COVID-19.
Methods
We present a post hoc analysis from a ...double-blinded placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial (RCT) on the effect of colchicine for the treatment of COVID-19. Serum levels of NOD-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome products—active caspase-1 (Casp1p20), IL-1β, and IL-18—were assessed at enrollment and after 48–72 h of treatment in patients receiving standard-of-care (SOC) plus placebo vs. those receiving SOC plus colchicine. The colchicine regimen was 0.5 mg tid for 5 days, followed by 0.5 mg bid for another 5 days.
Results
Thirty-six patients received SOC plus colchicine, and thirty-six received SOC plus placebo. Colchicine reduced the need for supplemental oxygen and the length of hospitalization. On Days 2–3, colchicine lowered the serum levels of Casp1p20 and IL-18, but not IL-1β.
Conclusion
Treatment with colchicine inhibited the activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome, an event triggering the ‘cytokine storm’ in COVID-19.

The present study analyzes the characteristics of Salmonella spp. from broiler chicken farms in Brazil. In total, 82 Salmonella spp. strains were characterized by serotyping, determining ...susceptibility to antimicrobials, and using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). Fifteen Salmonella serotypes were identified, among which Minnesota (40.24%), Infantis (14.63%), Heidelberg (7.31%), Senftenberg (6.09%), and Mbandaka (6.09%) were the most frequent. Salmonella Minnesota occurred mostly in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul and in one of the broiler companies surveyed. Approximately 60% of the strains were resistant to at least one of the antimicrobials tested. From these isolates, 17.07% were resistant to only one antimicrobial (tetracycline or streptomycin), and 9.75% were resistant to 3 or more antimicrobial classes. Thirteen resistance profiles were characterized, the most frequent of which were the resistance to tetracycline (15.85%); to the combination of trimethroprim with sulfamethoxazole, and tetracycline (10.97%); and to the combination of streptomycin and tetracycline (9.75%). Multiple correspondence analysis revealed that susceptibility or resistance of the analyzed strains and also particular Salmonella serotypes were associated with broiler-producing companies where the samples were collected. Strains presented high intraserotype genetic variability, as shown by the 64 PFGE profiles, suggesting the existence of several contamination sources in the surveyed farms.

The maturation kinetics and in vitro fertilization of immature bovine oocytes injected by the intra-follicular oocyte injection (IFOT) technique into pre-ovulatory follicles of previously ...synchronized cows were evaluated. In Experiment 1, grade I, II and III cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs) were randomly distributed to one of three Groups: Matvitro22 (COCs matured in vitro for 22 h), MatFol20 and MatFol28 (COCs matured in vivo after being injected into a pre-ovulatory follicle of previously synchronized cows for 19.8 ± 0.1 h and 28.3 ± 0.1 h, respectively). Cows received 12.5 mg of LH (Lutropin, Bioniche, Canada) at the time of IFOT in the MatFol20 Group or 10 h after IFOT in the MatFol28 Group. MatFol20 and MatFol28 COCs were aspirated approximately 20 h after the LH injection for nuclear maturation kinetics and recovery rate assessment. In Experiment 2, grade I, II, and III COCs were randomly distributed into two Groups: Matvitro22 Group, COCs were matured and fertilized in vitro, and MatFol20 Group, COCs were matured as in the MatFol20 Group in Experiment 1, but COCs were fertilized in vitro. Putative zygotes were classified as fertilized, unfertilized or polyspermic. In Experiment 1, the recovery rate was lower (P < 0.001) in the MatFol20 Group (52.9%, 91/172) compared with MatFol28 (72.9%, 113/155). Rate of oocytes in germinal vesicle stage, metaphase I, anaphase I and telophase I were similar among Groups. However, oocytes matured in vivo for 28.3 h had lower rate of metaphase II (P = 0.001) and greater rates of degenerated (P = 0.001) and parthenogenetically activated (P = 0.001) oocytes. In experiment 2, the rates of polyspermy and degenerated were similar between Groups. However, the rate of fertilized oocytes was greater (P = 0.05) in oocytes in the MatFol20 Group. It is concluded that oocyte in vivo maturation for 19.8 h after IFOT does not compromise the nuclear maturation kinetics and increases in vitro fertilization rates. However, the extra 10 h of intra-follicular incubation time decreased oocyte viability.
•Intra-follicular oocyte maturation for 20 h is similar to in vitro maturation.•The proportion of viable oocytes decreased after maturation for 30 h post IFOT.•Oocyte maturation for 20 h after IFOT improved in vitro fecundation capacity.

Thermal pasteurization and sterilization are predominantly used in the dairy industry due to their efficacy in improving the product safety and shelf life. However, heat treatment can cause ...undesirable protein denaturation, non-enzymatic browning, loss of vitamins and volatile flavor compounds, freezing point depression, and flavour changes. Cold plasma is a non-thermal technology that has gained attention in recent years as a potential alternative method for chemical and thermal disinfection in foods using ambient or moderate temperatures and short treatment times.
This review aims to describe the fundamentals, parameters, and technology on cold plasma, discussing the critical processing factors involved in this technology. Also, it describes the mechanisms of microbial inactivation and provides an overview of the effects of non-thermal plasma on the quality of dairy products, considering a physicochemical, sensory and microbiology perspective.
Cold plasma uses less aggressive mechanisms of action to the milk matrix when compared to the techniques currently used, and has shown an excellent performance on the elimination of pathogenic and spoilage microorganisms besides maintaining, in many cases, the nutritional, functional, and sensory characteristics of the product.

The 2010 biodiversity target agreed by signatories to the Convention on Biological Diversity directed the attention of conservation professionals toward the development of indicators with which to ...measure changes in biological diversity at the global scale. We considered why global biodiversity indicators are needed, what characteristics successful global indicators have, and how existing indicators perform. Because monitoring could absorb a large proportion of funds available for conservation, we believe indicators should be linked explicitly to monitoring objectives and decisions about which monitoring schemes deserve funding should be informed by predictions of the value of such schemes to decision making. We suggest that raising awareness among the public and policy makers, auditing management actions, and informing policy choices are the most important global monitoring objectives. Using four well-developed indicators of biological diversity (extent of forests, coverage of protected areas, Living Planet Index, Red List Index) as examples, we analyzed the characteristics needed for indicators to meet these objectives. We recommend that conservation professionals improve on existing indicators by eliminating spatial biases in data availability, fill gaps in information about ecosystems other than forests, and improve understanding of the way indicators respond to policy changes. Monitoring is not an end in itself, and we believe it is vital that the ultimate objectives of global monitoring of biological diversity inform development of new indicators. La meta 2010 de biodiversidad acordada por los signatarios de la Convención de Diversidad Biológica atrajo la atención de los profesionales de la conservación hacia el desarrollo de indicadores para medir los cambios en la diversidad biológica a escala global. Consideramos porqué se requieren indicadores globales de biodiversidad, qué características tienen los indicadores globales y cómo funcionan los indicadores existentes. Debido a que el monitoreo podría absorber una gran proporción de fondos disponibles para la conservación, consideramos que los indicadores deberían estar ligados explícitamente con los objetivos de monitoreo y que las decisiones sobre los planes de monitoreo merecedores de financiamiento deberían estar informadas por predicciones de tales planes para la toma de decisiones. Sugerimos que el incremento de la percepción del público y los tomadores de decisiones, la auditoría a las acciones de manejo y la notificación de las opciones de políticas son los objetivos más importantes del monitoreo global. Utilizando 4 indicadores de la diversidad biológica bien desarrollados (extensión de bosques, cobertura de áreas protegidas, Índice de la Lista Roja, Índice del Planeta Vivo) como ejemplos, analizamos las características que requieren los indicadores para cumplir con estos objetivos. Recomendamos que los profesionales de la conservación mejoren los indicadores existentes eliminando sesgos espaciales en la disponibilidad de datos, llenen huecos en la información sobre ecosistemas distintos a bosques y mejoren el conocimiento de la manera en que los indicadores responden a los cambios en las políticas. El monitoreo no es un fin en sí, y consideramos que es vital que los objetivos finales del monitoreo global de la biodiversidad biológica propicien el desarrollo de indicadores nuevos.

This article investigates a single-phase ac-dc-ac multilevel converter composed of two three-leg converters series-connected throughout two transformers (one on the grid side and one on the load ...side), sharing the same dc-link. The proposed converter allows to feed the load with sinusoidal voltages (keeping constant amplitude and frequency) under grid voltage disturbances, as sags, swells, and harmonics. Besides, the converter can operate with a sinusoidal grid current with a high power factor and can be applied to systems with either equal or different voltage levels at the input and output. Circuit model equations, pulse width modulation (PWM) technique based on space vector approaches, and a control system are presented. The proposed topology is compared with the conventional one in terms of harmonic distortion, semiconductor losses, transformers losses, and total power losses. Simulation and experimental results are presented under the same conditions to validate PWM and control strategies.
