Central venous catheter placement is a relatively common procedure in current practice, but it is not devoid of risks. Utmost care must be taken to follow a correct technique, and only appropriately trained and/or supervised medical professionals should perform this invasive act. One of the possible complications, completely avoidable by appropriate care, is the intravascular loss of the guide wire during insertion, which is a potentially serious complication. We describe one such case.

Since the 1880s the archaeology of human remains in Brazil was most limited to the laboratory osteometric, osteologic and dental techniques. Currently, bioarchaeology progresses through more complex approaches, which start in the interpretation of funerary and depositional structures containing human remains. Methodologies that can be used not only by specialists but also by archaeologists are available, both in the field as in the laboratory, helping to identify, document, recover and interpret human bone deposition in archaeological sites. On the other side, there were changes in the paradigms concerning the interpretation of sites containing human remains. The interpretations of the processes and attitudes that preceded, followed and succeeded the funerals or deposition of the human remains require more integration between archaeology and bioarchaeology in the field. Bones in situ are the only evidences able to tell us about the way the remains were manipulated in past acts and gestures, and how the archaeological sites were built and changed around them along the time. Here we discuss why and how bones in situ may be more informative about the archaeological sites themselves than about the lives they represent, and why it is important for the archaeologists to know how interpret them still in the field.

Summary
Oral tolerance is a T‐cell mediated phenomenon defined by inhibition of immune responsiveness to a protein previously contacted by the oral route. Oral tolerance may prevent autoimmune and ...allergic diseases that involve the recruitment and/or activation of different cell types including mast cells, neutrophils, eosinophils, monocytes and lymphocytes. The mechanisms by which oral tolerance avoids these immunological disorders are still controversial. Herein we used a murine model of ovalbumin (OVA)‐induced peritonitis to investigate the effect of oral tolerance on allergic inflammation. Frequency of leucocyte subpopulations was evaluated by global and differential cell counts in peritoneal lavage fluid, peripheral blood, and bone marrow. Changes on lymphocyte subsets and adhesion molecules expression by these cells were analysed by flow cytometry. As compared with OVA‐immune mice, intraperitoneal challenge of tolerant animals with OVA resulted in a significantly milder peritonitis, mostly affecting neutrophils and eosinophils; a concomitant reduction in total white blood cell counts was also observed, mainly because of lower neutrophil and eosinophil counts. Eosinophils, but not neutrophils, were also reduced in the bone‐marrow of OVA‐challenged tolerant mice. No changes occurred in total peritoneal lymphocyte counts in OVA‐tolerant mice, however, there was a significant decrease in CD3+ CD8+ T cells and an increase in B cells (CD45R+) in these animals as compared to immune OVA‐challenged animals. Altered expression of CD18 and CD54, respectively, in blood and peritoneal lymphocytes was also noted. These results suggest that, in addition to local specific effects, oral tolerance has systemic effects on the mobilization of leucocytes and bone‐marrow eosinopoiesis.

The present study aims to elucidate, using δ13C, δ15N and 87Sr/86Sr analysis of tooth enamel and dentin, some aspects of the geographic origin and the dietary habits of 42 individuals associated with ...a ceramic group buried in the coastal shallow site of Praia da Tapera, located on the island of Santa Catarina, Southern Brazil. The ceramic shreds found on this site would be associated with groups that inhabited the Southern Brazilian Plateau, and the presence of this evidence at Praia da Tapera and some other coastal sites raises important questions, not yet resolved, about the origin and the way of life of these pre-Columbian coastal groups that emerged in the region around 1500yearsBP.
The isotopic results suggest that none of the analyzed individuals would have come from the Plateau region. They probably were born and raised on the coast, including the site area. The wider 87Sr/86Sr variation found in the women may be signifying a patrilocal post-marital residential system to this group. The isotopic results also suggest that marine resources such as fish were the main food source. Despite the terrestrial fauna not being an important part of the protein diet, the boars analyzed from the site presented strontium values incompatible with the local geology, suggesting that these animals were hunted on the continent. This first isotopic study on a shallow coastal site with ceramic reinforces the idea of complexity regarding migration and trade networks between groups that inhabited the coast and the Plateau of Serra Geral around a thousand years before the arrival of Europeans in the region.
•All analyzed individuals lived on the coast during their childhood and didn't migrate from the Plateau region.•Strontium isotopic differences between sexes suggest that some women would have come from different areas of the coast.•Carbon and nitrogen isotope analyses suggest that all individuals had an economy based mainly on fishing marine resources.
