Aim The study evaluated the rate of reversal of Hartmann’s operation after the initial surgery and its morbidity.
Method A multicentre retrospective study was carried out in seven hospitals in the ...Valencia area of patients who underwent Hartmann’s operation from 2004 to 2008. The incidence of reversal was determined.
Results Four hundred and fifty‐two patients of mean age 67.5 ± 15.4 years were included, of whom 78.8% had an emergency operation. The most common diagnosis was cancer (58.6%), although diverticulitis predominated in the emergency setting. At a median follow up of 44 months, 159 (35.2%) patients had undergone reversal, including 16.6% after elective surgery and 40.4% after an emergency Hartmann’s procedure (P < 0.001). The most frequent reason why reversal was not done was death (74 25% patients). Patients undergoing reversal were younger and had a low ASA risk. Trauma was associated with a higher rate of reversal, followed by diverticular disease. Surgery was performed at a median of 10 months. An open approach with stapled anastomosis was used in most cases. The mortality was 3.5%. Complications occurred in 45.2%, with a 6.2% rate of anastomotic leakage. Complications were associated with age, diabetes mellitus, arteriosclerosis, obesity, smoking, chemotherapy and COPD.
Conclusion Hartmann’s reversal was performed in a small percentage of patients, mostly including those with benign disease. It had a significant morbidity.

Intense and purified radioactive beam of post-accelerated $^{14}$O was used to study the low-lying states in the unbound $^{15}$F nucleus. Exploiting resonant elastic scattering in inverse kinematics ...with a thick target, the second excited state, a resonance at E$_R$=4.757(6)(10)~MeV with a width of $\Gamma$=36(5)(14)~keV was measured for the first time with high precision. The structure of this narrow above-barrier state in a nucleus located two neutrons beyond the proton drip line was investigated using the Gamow Shell Model in the coupled channel representation with a $^{12}$C core and three valence protons. It is found that it is an almost pure wave function of two quasi-bound protons in the $2s_{1/2}$ shell.

The lack of specific research on the sequence of events that determine plant growth from meristem until wood formation represents a gap in the knowledge of growth dynamics in woody species. In this ...work, we surveyed published studies concerning cambial activity of Brazilian native species aiming at allowing the comparison of applied methods and obtained results. The annual cambial seasonality was observed in all the investigated species. Nevertheless, we found high heterogeneity in the used methodologies. As a result from this analysis, our opinion points to the need for standardizing sampling protocols and for discussing the suitability of experimental designs. This will help to define with greater precision the factors that determine the radial growth in the different tropical ecosystems.
Aquaculture provides more than half of the global seafood production and offers a wide diversity of high-quality products. However, its social acceptability is still not well established. The goal of ...this study was to determine the perceptions of aquaculture by different stakeholders along the seafood value chain in the Barcelona metropolitan area. The methodology used was based on a two-phase qualitative approach: the nominal group technique (NGT) and the Delphi survey. In the NGT phase, three groups, wholesalers, fishmongers and consumers, the latter divided into two subgroups according to the frequency of consumption of seafood, were used to collect and rank positive and negative perceptions about aquaculture. This information was subsequently used to build the questionnaire for the Delphi survey, which involved a group of experts from the board of the Wholesalers' Association, Fishmongers' Guild board and consumers' associations. Results showed that among the different stakeholders the highest concordance in positive aspects of aquaculture products included market issues and the stable quality of farmed products. On the other hand, the highest concordance in negative aspects included the lack of sufficient information about aquaculture, which was a serious issue for all stakeholders, and quality. Globally, animal welfare and environmental impact issues were not of much concern, although they included some minor positive and negative perceptions. The diversity of opinions among experts on certain aspects further emphasizes the need for more information, as they could have a potential role as information prescribers to consumers. We argue that information campaigns can take advantage of the positive perception of market issues (convenience, price, diversity) and quality stability to create a favourable predisposition towards aquaculture and thus help to introduce other problems in which perceptions generate a stronger debate. In communication or marketing campaigns, it is essential to highlight the quality and safety of farmed products, with a particular emphasis on the quality of fish feed as a guarantee of optimal nutritional and organoleptic properties of aquaculture products. Welfare and environment generate minor negative perceptions, so they should appear in campaigns, with a firm focus on the sustainability of the aquaculture sector, to improve its general image. In summary, the results of this study contribute to identifying the most relevant aspects to be taken into account to improve the public perception of aquaculture in the Barcelona area and may be of help in the design of similar efforts elsewhere.
•We analyse the perception about aquaculture products across consumers, fishmongers and wholesalers.•Agreement in the stakeholder groups of value chain (concordance) is found for positive perceptions on market issues.•There are some positive perceptions on quality but continuity only appears in the negative.•There is not a general concern on welfare and environment related issues.•A claim for information is identified, content for a communication campaign to improve the aquaculture image is suggested.

Prolonged and sustained stimulation of the hypothalamo–pituitary–adrenal axis have adverse effects on numerous brain regions, including the cerebellum. Motor coordination and motor learning are essential for animal and require the regulation of cerebellar neurons. The G-protein-coupled cannabinoid CB1 receptor coordinates synaptic transmission throughout the CNS and is of highest abundance in the cerebellum. Accordingly, the aim of this study was to investigate the long-lasting effects of chronic psychosocial stress on motor coordination and motor learning, CB1 receptor expression, endogenous cannabinoid ligands and gene expression in the cerebellum.
After chronic psychosocial stress, motor coordination and motor learning were impaired as indicated the righting reflex and the rota-rod. The amount of the endocannabinoid 2-AG increased while CB1 mRNA and protein expression were downregulated after chronic stress. Transcriptome analysis revealed 319 genes differentially expressed by chronic psychosocial stress in the cerebellum; mainly involved in synaptic transmission, transmission of nerve impulse, and cell-cell signaling. Calreticulin was validated as a stress candidate gene.
The present study provides evidence that chronic stress activates calreticulin and might be one of the pathological mechanisms underlying the motor coordination and motor learning dysfunctions seen in social defeat mice.

The Global Network of Optical Magnetometers for Exotic physics searches (GNOME) is a network of time-synchronized, geographically separated, optically pumped atomic magnetometers that is being used ...to search for correlated transient signals heralding exotic physics. GNOME is sensitive to exotic couplings of atomic spins to certain classes of dark matter candidates, such as axions. This work presents a data analysis procedure to search for axion dark matter in the form of topological defects: specifically, walls separating domains of discrete degenerate vacua in the axion field. An axion domain wall crossing the Earth creates a distinctive signal pattern in the network that can be distinguished from random noise. The reliability of the analysis procedure and the sensitivity of the GNOME to domain-wall crossings are studied using simulated data.

In this paper, a detailed study of the superjunction MOSFET (SJ-MOSFET) thermal behavior on high-current conduction is presented. First, the heat-generation (HG) process and its dependence on device ...geometry and biasing conditions are elucidated from numerical-simulation tools. Later, the resultant temperature distribution is evaluated by simulation, thus, acquiring a physical understanding of its impact on the electrical characteristics and failure mechanisms, particularly at short-circuit operation. The obtained results show relevant differences with respect to the thermal behavior of conventional power MOSFETs. As a matter of fact, the maximum HG in SJ-MOSFET is found at a certain distance from the surface, which principally depends on the drift length. This fact has important implications on the device reliability prediction and a compact electrothermal modeling
Breast cancer is a group of clinically, histopathologically and molecularly heterogeneous diseases, with different outcomes and responses to treatment. Triple-negative (TN) breast cancers are defined ...as tumors that lack the expression of estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor and epidermal growth factor receptor 2. This subgroup accounts for 15% of all types of breast cancer and its prevalence is higher among young African, African-American and Latino women. The hypermethylation of CpG islands (CpGI) is a common epigenetic alteration for suppressing gene expression in breast cancer and has been shown to be a key factor in breast carcinogenesis. In this study we analyzed the hypermethylation of 110 CpGI within 69 cancer-related genes in TN tumors. For the methylation analysis, we used the methyl-specific multiplex-ligation probe amplification assay. We found that the number of methylated CpGI is similar between TN and non-TN tumors, but the methylated genes between the groups are different. The methylation profile of TN tumors is defined by the methylation of five genes (that is, CDKN2B, CD44, MGMT, RB and p73) plus the non-methylation of 11 genes (that is, GSTP1, PMS2, MSH2, MLH1, MSH3, MSH6, DLC1, CACNA1A, CACNA1G, TWIST1 and ID4). We conclude that TN tumors have a specific methylation profile. Our findings give new information for better understanding tumor etiology and encourage future studies on potential drug targets for triple-negative breast tumors, which now lack a specific treatment.
Various studies have shown that model performance may vary depending on the species being modelled, the study área, or the number of sampled localities, and suggest that it is necessary to assess ...which model is better for a particular situation. Thus, in this study we evalúate the performance of different techniques for modelling the distribution of Patagonian insects. We applied eight of the most widely used modelling methods (artificial neural networks, BIOCLIM, classification and regression trees, DOMAIN, generalized additive models, GARP, generalized linear models, and Maxent) to the distribution of ten Patagonian insect species. We compared model performance with five accuracy measures. To overeóme the problem of not having reliable absence data with which to evalúate model performance, we used randomly selected pseudo-absences located outside of the polygon área defined by taxonomic experts. Our analyses show significant differences among modelling methods depending on the chosen accuracy measure. Maxent performed the best according to four out of the five accuracy measures, although its accuracy did not differ significantly from that obtained with artificial neural networks. When assessed on per species basis, Maxent was also one of the strongest performing methods, particularly for species sampled from a relatively low number of localities. Overall, our study identified four groups of modelling techniques based on model performance. The top-performing group is composed of Maxent and artificial neural networks, followed closely by the DOMAIN technique. The third group includes GARP, GAM, GLM, and CART, and the fourth best performer is the BIOCLIM technique. Although these results may allow obtaining better distributional predictions for reserve selection, it is necessary to be cautious in their use due to the provisional nature of these simulations.
The Escherichia coli mntH (formerly yfeP) gene encodes a putative membrane protein (MntH) highly similar to members of the eukaryotic Nramp family of divalent metal ion transporters. To determine the ...function of E. coli MntH, a null mutant was created and MntH was overexpressed both in wild‐type E. coli and in the metal‐dependent mutant hflB1(Ts). At the restrictive temperature 42°C, the mntH null mutation reduces the suppression of hflB1(Ts) thermosensitivity by exogenous divalent metals. Conversely, overexpression of MntH restores growth at 42°C, increases suppression of the ts phenotype by Fe(II) and Ni(II) and renders hflB1(Ts) cells hypersensitive to Mn(II). Transport studies in intact cells show that MntH selectively facilitates uptake of 54Mn(II) and 55Fe(II) in a temperature‐, time‐ and proton‐dependent manner. Competition studies in uptake assays and growth inhibition experiments in hflB1(Ts) mutants together indicate that MntH is a divalent metal cation transporter of broad substrate specificity. The functional characteristics of MntH suggest that it corresponds to the previously described manganese transporter of E. coli. This study indicates that proton‐dependent divalent metal ion uptake has been preserved in the Nramp family from bacteria to humans.
