En este sentido, la técnica de recolección de datos usada fue la evocación y asociación libre, analizados por frecuencias y con la técnica de Escalerización. En el estudio se evidenció que la representación más importante y general gira en torno a dos nociones: las razones de uso y propiedades. Todo esto constituyó un aporte para la planificación de líneas de acción que implican un abordaje concreto considerando las debilidades encontradas en el estudio.
Abstract Background Previous studies have associated neurohumoral excitation, as estimated by plasma norepinephrine levels, with increased mortality in heart failure. However, the prognostic value of ...neurovascular interplay in heart failure (HF) is unknown. We tested the hypothesis that the muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) and forearm blood flow would predict mortality in chronic heart failure patients. Methods One hundred and twenty two heart failure patients, NYHA II–IV, age 50 ± 1 ys, LVEF 33 ± 1%, and LVDD 7.1 ± 0.2 mm, were followed up for one year. MSNA was directly measured from the peroneal nerve by microneurography. Forearm blood flow was obtained by venous occlusion plethysmography. The variables were analyzed by using univariate, stepwise multivariate Cox proportional hazards analysis, and Kaplan–Meier analysis. Results After one year, 34 pts died from cardiac death. The univariate analysis showed that MSNA, forearm blood flow, LVDD, LVEF, and heart rate were significant predictors of mortality. The multivariate analysis showed that only MSNA ( P = 0.001) and forearm blood flow ( P = 0.003) were significant independent predictors of mortality. On the basis of median levels of MSNA, survival rate was significantly lower in pts with > 49 bursts/min. Similarly, survival rate was significantly lower in pts with forearm blood flow < 1.87 ml/min/100 ml ( P = 0.002). Conclusion MSNA and forearm blood flow predict mortality rate in patients with heart failure. It remains unknown whether therapies that specifically target these abnormalities will improve survival in heart failure.

Cancer-associated thrombosis is one of the major causes of worse prognosis among tumor-bearing patients. Extracellular vesicles derived from cancer cells, which can be divided mainly into ...microvesicles and exosomes, can participate in several tumor progression phenomena. Tumor-derived microvesicles positive for tissue factor (TF) have been associated with thrombotic risk in certain cancer types. Cancer cell-derived exosomes, however, have not. In this study we evaluated the capacity of extracellular vesicles (EVs, containing both microvesicles and exosomes) derived from breast-cancer cell lines in promoting platelet activation, aggregation and plasma coagulation, in experiments that access both TF-dependent and -independent activities.
EVs were isolated from the conditioned media of two human mammary carcinoma cell lines: MDA-MB-231 (highly invasive) and MCF-7 (less invasive). TF-independent EV/platelet interaction, platelet P-selectin exposure and aggregation were evaluated. Western blotting, plasma clotting and platelet aggregation in the presence of plasma were performed for the measurement of TF-dependent activity in EVs.
Interaction between MDA-MB-231 EVs and washed platelets led to increased platelet P-selectin exposure and platelet aggregation compared to MCF-7 EVs. MDA-MB-231 EVs had higher TF protein levels and TF-dependent procoagulant activity than MCF-7 EVs. Consequently, TF-dependent platelet aggregation was also induced by MDA-MB-231 EVs, but not by MCF-7 EVs.
Our results suggest that MDA-MB-231 EVs induce TF-independent platelet activation and aggregation, as well as TF-dependent plasma clotting and platelet aggregation by means of thrombin generation. In this context, aggressive breast cancer-derived EVs may contribute to cancer-associated thrombosis.

Macrophages are key players during Paracoccidioides brasiliensis infection. However, the relative contribution of the fungal response to counteracting macrophage activity remains poorly understood. ...In this work, we evaluated the P. brasiliensis proteomic response to macrophage internalization. A total of 308 differentially expressed proteins were detected in P. brasiliensis during infection. The positively regulated proteins included those involved in alternative carbon metabolism, such as enzymes involved in gluconeogenesis, beta-oxidation of fatty acids and amino acids catabolism. The down-regulated proteins during P. brasiliensis internalization in macrophages included those related to glycolysis and protein synthesis. Proteins involved in the oxidative stress response in P. brasiliensis yeast cells were also up-regulated during macrophage infection, including superoxide dismutases (SOD), thioredoxins (THX) and cytochrome c peroxidase (CCP). Antisense knockdown mutants evaluated the importance of CCP during macrophage infection. The results suggested that CCP is involved in a complex system of protection against oxidative stress and that gene silencing of this component of the antioxidant system diminished the survival of P. brasiliensis in macrophages and in a murine model of infection.

Biophotonics is defined as the combination of biology and photonics (the physical science of the light). It is a general term for all techniques that deal with the interaction between biological tissues/cells and photons (light). Biophotonics offers a great variety of techniques that can facilitate the early detection of diseases and promote innovative theragnostic approaches. As the COVID-19 infection can be transmitted due to the face-to-face communication, droplets and aerosol inhalation and the exposure to saliva, blood, and other body fluids, as well as the handling of sharp instruments, dental practices are at increased risk of infection. In this paper, a literature review was performed to explore the application of Biophotonics approaches in Dentistry focusing on the COVID-19 pandemic and how they can contribute to avoid or minimize the risks of infection in a dental setting. For this, search-related papers were retrieved from PubMED, Scielo, Google Schoolar, and American Dental Association and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention databases. The body of evidence currently available showed that Biophotonics approaches can reduce microorganism load, decontaminate surfaces, air, tissues, and minimize the generation of aerosol and virus spreading by minimally invasive, time-saving, and alternative techniques in general. However, each clinical situation must be individually evaluated regarding the benefits and drawbacks of these approaches, but always pursuing less-invasive and less aerosol-generating procedures, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Background:
Evidence suggests that carvedilol decreases muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) in patients with heart failure (HF) but carvedilol fails to improve forearm vascular resistance and ...overall functional capacity. Exercise training in HF reduces MSNA and improves forearm vascular resistance and functional capacity.
Aims:
To investigate whether the beneficial effects exercise training on MSNA are maintained in the presence of carvedilol.
Methods and results:
Twenty seven HF patients, NYHA Class II-III, EF <35%, peak VO2 <20 ml/kg/min, treated with carvedilol were randomly divided into two groups: exercise training (n=15) and untrained (n=12). MSNA was recorded by microneurography. Forearm blood flow (FBF) was measured by venous occlusion plethysmography. The four-month training program consisted of three 60-min exercise/week on a cycloergometer. Baseline parameters were similar between groups. Exercise training reduced MSNA (-14±3.3 bursts/100 HB, p=0.001) and increased forearm blood flow (0.6±0.1 mL/min/100 g.p p>0.001) in HF patients on carvedilol. In addition, exercise training improved peak VO2 in HF patients (20±6%, p=0.002). MSNA, FBF and peak VO2 were unchanged in untrained HF patients on carvedilol.
Conclusion:
Exercise training reduces MSNA in heart failure patients treated with carvedilol. In addition, the beneficial effects of exercise training on muscle blood flow and functional capacity are still realized in patients on carvedilol.
