As demand for refrigeration and air conditioning increased during the last decade, the opportunities have expanded for using thermal energy storage (TES) systems in an economically advantageous manner in place of conventional cooling plants. Many cool storage systems use phase change materials (PCMs) and achieve peak load shifting in buildings. This work presents numerical investigations of the performance enhancement of a free cooling system using a TES unit employing multiple PCMs. The TES unit is composed of a number of rectangular channels for the flowing heat transfer fluid, separated by PCM slabs. Using the effective heat capacity method, the melting and solidification of the PCM is solved. The forced convective heat transfer inside the channels is analyzed by solving the energy equation, which is coupled with the heat conduction equation in the container wall. The effect of design parameters such as PCM slab length, thickness and fluid passage gap on the storage performance is also investigated using an energy based optimization. The results show that a system which can guarantee comfort conditions for the climate of Tabriz, Iran has an optimum COP of 7.0. This could be achieved by a combination of CaCl2·6H2O with RT25 with the optimum air channel thickness of 3.2mm, length of 1.3m and PCM slab thickness of 10mm.

In this paper, a parallel flow double-effect water-lithium bromide absorption refrigeration cycle is investigated using comprehensive exergy-based analyses. The exergy destruction of each device is calculated and used for further analysis. The performance of the system is optimized for maximum coefficient of performance and exergy efficiency, considering the distribution ratio as a variable using the Golden Section method. The maximum coefficient of performance, i.e. 1.295, is obtained at a high pressure generator temperature of 169.6 °C, and the maximum exergy efficiency, i.e. 0.225, is obtained at a high pressure generator temperature of 142.7 °C. Advanced exergy analysis, a state of the art thermodynamic method, is employed for diagnosing equipment and cycle malfunctions. Not only can the aforementioned analysis pinpoint the source of irreversibility, it also provides the avoidable irreversibility as well. The results show that the endogenous part of the exergy destruction is much larger than the exogenous part, implying it is better to focus on component efficiencies to improve system performance. Moreover, the unavoidable part of the total exergy destruction is much larger than the avoidable portion, indicating that exergy destruction cannot be decreased owing to technical limitations of equipment.

Due to the advantages offered by latent heat thermal storages, phase change materials (PCM) are used in numerous applications including building air conditioning systems. In this study, the development is reported of an approximate analytical model for the solidification process in a shell and tube finned thermal storage. A comparative study is presented for solidification of the PCM in cylindrical shell and rectangular storages having the same volume and heat transfer surface area. The PCM solidification rate in the cylindrical shell storage is found to exceed that for the rectangular storage. The effects are investigated of heat thermal fluid (HTF) inlet temperature and flow rate on thermal storage performance.

Preterm birth is a global public health issue and rates in Puerto Rico are consistently among the highest in the USA. Exposures to environmental contaminants might be a contributing factor.
In a ...preliminary analysis from the Puerto Rico Testsite for Exploring Contamination Threats (PROTECT) cohort (n = 1090), we investigated the association between urinary phthalate metabolite concentrations measured at three study visits (targeted at 20, 24, and 28 weeks of gestation) individually and averaged over pregnancy with gestational age at delivery and preterm birth. We additionally assessed differences in associations by study visit and among preterm births with a spontaneous delivery.
Compared to women in the general USA population, urinary concentrations of metabolites of di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP) and di-isobutyl phthalate (DiBP) were higher among pregnant women in Puerto Rico. Interquartile range (IQR) increases in pregnancy-averages of urinary metabolites of DBP and DiBP were associated with shorter duration of gestation and increased odds of preterm birth. An IQR increase in mono-n-butyl phthalate (MBP), a metabolite of DBP, was associated with 1.55 days shorter gestation (95% confidence interval CI = −2.68, −0.42) and an odds ratio (OR) of 1.42 (95% confidence interval CI: 1.07, 1.88) for preterm birth. An IQR increase in mono-isobutyl phthalate (MiBP), a metabolite of DiBP, was associated with 1.16 days shorter gestation (95% CI = −2.25, −0.08) and an OR of 1.32 (95% CI: 1.02, 1.71) for preterm birth. Associations were greatest in magnitude for urinary concentrations measured at the second study visit (median 23 weeks gestation). DiBP metabolite associations were greatest in magnitude in models of spontaneous preterm birth. No associations were detected with other phthalate metabolites, including those of di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate.
Among pregnant women in the PROTECT cohort, DBP and DiBP metabolites were associated with increased odds of preterm birth. These exposures may be contributing to elevated rates of preterm birth observed in Puerto Rico.

Exergoeconomic analyses are reported for three classes of double effect LiBr/water absorption refrigeration systems in order to investigate the influence of various operating parameters on investment costs of the overall systems and product cost flow rates. In addition, the contributions of component costs to the overall costs are obtained for each system and the results of the exergoeconomic analyses of the systems are described. The results reveal the advantages and disadvantages of different configurations of double effect LiBr/water absorption refrigeration systems from an exergoeconomic point of view and are expected to be useful in the selection, design and modification of the structure and operating parameters of such systems.

BACKGROUND The LH surge promotes ovulation via activation of multiple signaling networks in the ovarian follicle. Studies in animal models have shown the importance of LH-induced activation of the ...epidermal growth factor (EGF)signaling network in critical peri-ovulatory events. We investigated the biological significance of regulatory mechanisms mediated by EGF-like growth factors during LH stimulation in humans. METHODS We characterized the EGF signaling network in mature human ovarian follicles using in vivo and in vitro approaches. Amphiregulin (AREG) levels were measured in 119 follicular fluid (FF) samples from IVF/ICSI patients. Biological activity of human FF was assessed using in vitro oocyte maturation, cumulus expansion and cell mitogenic assays. RESULTS AREG is the most abundant EGF-like growth factor accumulating in the FF of mature follicles of hCG-stimulated patients. No AREG was detected before the LH surge or before hCG stimulation of granulosa cells in vitro, demonstrating that the accumulation of AREG requires gonadotrophin stimulation. Epiregulin and betacellulin mRNA were detected in both human mural and cumulus granulosa cells, although at significantly lower levels than AREG. FF from stimulated follicles causes cumulus expansion and oocyte maturation in a reconstitution assay. Immunodepletion of AREG abolishes the ability of FF to stimulate expansion (P < 0.0001) and oocyte maturation (P < 0.05), confirming the biological activity of AREG. Conversely, mitogenic activity of FF remained after depletion of AREG, indicating that other mitogens accumulate in FF. FF from follicles yielding an immature germinal vesicle oocyte or from an oocyte that develops into an aberrant embryo contains lower AREG levels than that from follicles yielding a healthy oocyte (P = 0.008). CONCLUSIONS EGF-like growth factors play a role in critical peri-ovulatory events in humans, and AREG accumulation is a useful marker of gonadotrophin stimulation and oocyte competence.
Some breast cancers have been shown to contain a small fraction of cells characterized by CD44⁺/CD24⁻/low cell-surface antigen profile that have high tumor-initiating potential. In addition, breast ...cancer cells propagated in vitro as mammospheres (MSs) have also been shown to be enriched for cells capable of self-renewal. In this study, we have defined a gene expression signature common to both CD44⁺/CD24⁻/low and MS-forming cells. To examine its clinical significance, we determined whether tumor cells surviving after conventional treatments were enriched for cells bearing this CD44⁺/CD24⁻/low-MS signature. The CD44⁺/CD24⁻/low-MS signature was found mainly in human breast tumors of the recently identified "claudin-low" molecular subtype, which is characterized by expression of many epithelial-mesenchymal-transition (EMT)-associated genes. Both CD44⁺/CD24⁻/low-MS and claudin-low signatures were more pronounced in tumor tissue remaining after either endocrine therapy (letrozole) or chemotherapy (docetaxel), consistent with the selective survival of tumor-initiating cells posttreatment. We confirmed an increased expression of mesenchymal markers, including vimentin (VIM) in cytokeratin-positive epithelial cells metalloproteinase 2 (MMP2), in two separate sets of postletrozole vs. pretreatment specimens. Taken together, these data provide supporting evidence that the residual breast tumor cell populations surviving after conventional treatment may be enriched for subpopulations of cells with both tumor-initiating and mesenchymal features. Targeting proteins involved in EMT may provide a therapeutic strategy for eliminating surviving cells to prevent recurrence and improve long-term survival in breast cancer patients.

Claudin-low tumors are a highly aggressive breast cancer subtype with no targeted treatments and a clinically documented resistance to chemotherapy. They are significantly enriched in cancer stem ...cells (CSCs), which makes claudin-low tumor models particularly attractive for studying CSC behavior and developing novel approaches to minimize CSC therapy resistance. One proposed mechanism by which CSCs arise is via an epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), and reversal of this process may provide a potential therapeutic approach for increasing tumor chemosensitivity. Therefore, we investigated the role of known EMT regulators, miR-200 family of microRNAs in controlling the epithelial state, stem-like properties and therapeutic response in an in vivo primary, syngeneic p53(null) claudin-low tumor model that is normally deficient in miR-200 expression. Using an inducible lentiviral approach, we expressed the miR-200c cluster in this model and found that it changed the epithelial state, and consequently, impeded CSC behavior in these mesenchymal tumors. Moreover, these state changes were accompanied by a decrease in proliferation and an increase in the differentiation status. miR-200c expression also forced a significant reorganization of tumor architecture, affecting important cellular processes involved in cell-cell contact, cell adhesion and motility. Accordingly, induced miR200c expression significantly enhanced the chemosensitivity and decreased the metastatic potential of this p53(null) claudin-low tumor model. Collectively, our data suggest that miR-200c expression in claudin-low tumors offers a potential therapeutic application to disrupt the EMT program on multiple fronts in this mesenchymal tumor subtype, by altering tumor growth, chemosensitivity and metastatic potential in vivo.

The dentate gyrus is hypothesized to function as a “gate,” limiting the flow of excitation through the hippocampus. During epileptogenesis, adult-generated granule cells (DGCs) form aberrant neuronal ...connections with neighboring DGCs, disrupting the dentate gate. Hyperactivation of the mTOR signaling pathway is implicated in driving this aberrant circuit formation. While the presence of abnormal DGCs in epilepsy has been known for decades, direct evidence linking abnormal DGCs to seizures has been lacking. Here, we isolate the effects of abnormal DGCs using a transgenic mouse model to selectively delete PTEN from postnatally generated DGCs. PTEN deletion led to hyperactivation of the mTOR pathway, producing abnormal DGCs morphologically similar to those in epilepsy. Strikingly, animals in which PTEN was deleted from ≥9% of the DGC population developed spontaneous seizures in about 4 weeks, confirming that abnormal DGCs, which are present in both animals and humans with epilepsy, are capable of causing the disease.

The diagnosis and effective treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in adults is an urgent health priority. It is the position of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) that only a medical ...provider can diagnose medical conditions such as OSA and primary snoring. Throughout this statement, the term "medical provider" refers to a licensed physician and any other health care professional who is licensed to practice medicine in accordance with state licensing laws and regulations. A home sleep apnea test (HSAT) is an alternative to polysomnography for the diagnosis of OSA in uncomplicated adults presenting with signs and symptoms that indicate an increased risk of moderate to severe OSA. It is also the position of the AASM that: the need for, and appropriateness of, an HSAT must be based on the patient's medical history and a face-to-face examination by a medical provider, either in person or via telemedicine; an HSAT is a medical assessment that must be ordered by a medical provider to diagnose OSA or evaluate treatment efficacy; an HSAT should not be used for general screening of asymptomatic populations; diagnosis, assessment of treatment efficacy, and treatment decisions must not be based solely on automatically scored HSAT data, which could lead to sub-optimal care that jeopardizes patient health and safety; and the raw data from the HSAT device must be reviewed and interpreted by a physician who is either board-certified in sleep medicine or overseen by a board-certified sleep medicine physician.
