Colors are important vehicles for social signals in many taxa. In Squamata, previous studies have linked color characteristics and chromatic diversity to sexual selection and, particularly, species ...showing male-biased body size dimorphism also showed male-biased dichromatism and color diversity. Sexual dichromatism may occur in body regions used for conspecific communication and it may be expressed at wavelengths, such as ultraviolet, easily perceivable by conspecifics. We tested this prediction in a social lizard model, Tropidurus spinulosus, using spectrophotometry and visual modelling which enable colors to be interpreted as the individuals of the same taxon see them. Our results indicate that sexual dichromatism occurs in the ventral regions and the flanks, which are the body regions involved in sexual displays. Males show greater color diversity, having larger color volumes and more contrasting colors. These findings reinforce the idea that sexual selection towards males is coupled with the evolution of male-biased, diverse, coloration which could act as a signal in social reproductive contexts.

Dendritic cells (DCs) play crucial roles in initiating and promoting immune defences, providing a pivotal target for vaccines. Although nanoparticle/nanogel-based delivery vehicles are showing ...potential for delivering vaccines to the immune system, there is little information on their characteristics of interaction with DCs. While particle uptake by DCs has been shown, the mechanism of cell targeting has not been studied. Moreover, it is still unclear how particle surface decoration influences the handling of such vaccines by DCs. Accordingly, chitosan nanogels carrying a model antigen, ovalbumin (ova), were analysed for interaction with and processing by DCs. Nanogel surfaces decorated with alginate (alg) or mannosylated alginate (alg-man), were used for targeting particular DC receptors. DC uptake of particles was observed, being dependent on endosomal-based processes. Inhibiting PI3-kinase or lipid raft activities impaired the uptake, which was only reduced, indicating the involvement of more than one endocytic pathway; notably, this was observed with both nanogel-delivered or free ova. Importantly, surface decoration of particles was less influential on particle uptake, contrasting with the ova cargo which played the major role. Such influence of the vaccine cargo has to date been largely ignored. When receptors interacting directly with ova were blocked, this altered the uptake of alg-nanogels and alg-man-nanogels carrying ova. The nanogels did have an influential role, in that modulation of DC functional activity owed more to the nanogel structure. Using an in vitro restimulation assay with ova-specific lymphocytes, nanogel-delivered and free ova were similarly effective at inducing specific antibody. Nanogel-delivered ova with mannose surface decoration was superior to free ova for inducing interferon-γ production by T-lymphocytes. Together, the data demonstrates that particle-based vaccine delivery should consider the influences of both the surface decoration and the vaccine cargo; each can influence different aspects of the interaction with DCs. Such combined influences are likely to impinge on the characteristics of the immune response induced.

We show that in patient’s natural killer (NK) cells stimulated with IFNα the expected increase in degranulation and inhibition of IFNγ production were affected. These data support a role for NK cell function dysregulation and lack of inhibition of IFNγ production as contributors to the development of HLH in patients with impaired type I IFN signaling.
Long-term evolution of microphytoplankton communities remains poorly studied in anthropized coastal zones submitted to multiple stressors. Here, we investigate decadal (2005–2017) microphytoplankton ...community changes, focusing on abundance and biovolume of major taxa related to both local abiotic conditions (rainfall rate, temperature and salinity) and regional convection events (wintering deep mixing) in the highly urbanized and semi-enclosed Toulon Bay (NW Mediterranean Sea). Results showed that persistent variations in local rainfall regime were followed by major changes in microphytoplankton community composition. Wet period (P2) (increase of wintering precipitations observed between late 2008 and early 2015) was associated to an increase of large heterotrophic dinoflagellates and disappearance of dominant diatom taxa, while dry periods (2005–2008 (P1) and 2015–2017 (P3)) promoted diatoms, microflagellates and small mixotrophic/heterotrophic dinoflagellates including potentially toxic species. Concomitance between intense deep mixing events, reported in open Ligurian Basin (particularly during winters 2005 and 2006) and higher values in the total microphytoplankton abundance and in spring diatom abundance regardless of rainfall conditions, presents this meso-scale process as the main fertilization mechanism in Toulon Bay. Although no change was detected in the chlorophyll a concentration during the 2006–2017 period, its trend was negatively correlated to the total microphytoplankton abundance. This negative relation as well as a change of size in dinoflagellates suggested a shift in the primary producer nature, from large autotrophic cells (diatoms and microflagellates) to smaller ones, driven by a runoff intensification. Finally, different communities composition were observed during both dry periods (i.e. diatoms-dominated and autotrophic microflagellate-dominated communities during P1 and P3, respectively), suggesting another environmental driver of change for phytoplankton communities of this coastal ecosystem.

A numerical methodology developed for the microarchitecture design of 3D elastic two-phase periodic composites with effective isotropic properties close to the theoretical bounds is here presented ...and analyzed. This methodology is formulated as a topology optimization problem and is implemented using a level-set approach jointly with topological derivative.
The most salient characteristic of this methodology is the imposition of preestablished crystal symmetries to the designed topologies; we integrate a topological optimization formulation with crystal symmetries to design mechanical metamaterials.
The computational homogenization of the composite elastic properties is determined using a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) technique. Due to the design domains are the primitive cells of Bravais lattices compatible with the space group imposed to the material layout, we have adapted the FFT technique to compute the effective properties in 3D parallelepiped domains.
In this work, to find the topologies satisfying the proposed targets, we test four space groups of the cubic crystal system. Thus, the achievement of composites with effective elasticity tensor having cubic symmetry is guaranteed, and the isotropic response is then enforced by adding only one scalar constraint to the topology optimization problem.
To assess the methodology, the following microarchitectures are designed and reported: two auxetic composites, three pentamode materials, and one maximum stiffness composite. With only one exception, all the remaining topologies display effective elastic properties with Zener coefficients approximating to 1.

Global warming is affecting biodiversity; however, the extent to which animal reproductive processes respond to predicted temperature increments remains largely unexplored. The thermal environment ...has a pronounced impact on metabolic rates of ectotherms; therefore, an interesting question to assess is whether temperature increase might affect specific reproductive mechanisms like sperm performance in ectotherms. Moreover, in many species, oviductal fluid (OF) is known to regulate and maintain sperm quality; however, the role of OF in relation to the effects of high temperature on sperm remains unclear. Our aim was to experimentally test the effect of increased temperature on sperm velocity, swimming path and percentage of motility in neutral conditions at ejaculation (without OF) and in female's reproductive tract fluid (with OF), in a social ectotherm lizard model, Tropidurus spinulosus, which has specific thermal requirements for reproduction. Our results suggest that a rising temperature associated with global warming (+4°C) affects negatively sperm dynamics and survival. However, OF ameliorated the harmful effects of high temperature. This is an important point, as this study is the first to have tested the role of OF in preserving sperm from a warmer pre-fertilization environment. These results contribute to our understanding of how thermal environment changes might affect post-copulatory reproductive mechanisms. Nod-like Receptor Pyrin domain containing proteins (NLRPs) expressed by resident renal cells may contribute to the pathogenesis of multiple renal diseases. Cystinosis is a genetic disorder that ...affects kidney and particularly proximal tubular epithelial cells (PTEC). Here, we investigated the expression of NLRP family members in human control and cystinotic conditionally immortalized PTEC. Among all the NLRPs tested, we found that NLRP2 is highly expressed in cystinostic PTEC, but not in PTEC from healthy subjects. The NLRP2 overexpression was confirmed in primary PTEC and in kidney biopsies from cystinotic patients. In order to elucidate the role of NLRP2 in PTEC, we stably transfected control PTEC with an NLRP2-containing plasmid. We showed that NLRP2 markedly increases the production of several NF-κB regulated cytokines and chemokines. Accordingly, we demonstrated that NLRP2 interacts with IKKa and positively regulates the DNA-binding activity of p50 and p65 NF-κB, by modulating the p65 NF-κB phosphorylation status in Serine 536. Transcriptome analysis revealed that NLRP2 also upregulates the expression of profibrotic mediators and reduces that of several interferon-inducible genes. Finally, NLRP2 overexpression decreased the apoptotic cell rate. Consistently, silencing of NLRP2 by small-interfering RNA in cystinotic PTEC resulted in a significant decrease in cytokine and chemokine production as well as in an increase in the apoptosis rate. Altogether, our data reveals a previously unrecognized role for NLRP2 in regulating proinflammatory, profibrotic and antiapoptotic responses in PTEC, through NF-κB activation. Moreover, our findings unveil a novel potential mechanism involving NLRP2 overexpression in the pathogenesis of cystinosis.
Zooplankton present characteristics of high interest in the frame of investigation for organisms sensitive to environmental changes and/or anthropogenic pressures. Such indicators are particularly ...needed in the present context of European legislation (Marine Strategy Framework Directive). However, zooplankton have not been given the interest they should have in regards to these issues. The aim of the present study is to provide an attempt of proposition of indicators of good environmental status and associated thresholds based on zooplankton data. Zooplankton time-series (2002–2013) from the Toulon Bay in the Mediterranean was used. This time-series presents the great characteristics that the sampling has be done jointly in two areas of the Bay of Toulon known to differ in term of anthropogenic pressures. The study focus on the copepod assemblage and different potential indicators are tested: ratio of copepod families on total copepod and diversity index (Piélou's evenness). The indicators relevance was evaluated per season by looking at the importance of the overlapping region between density's distributions for each indicator in both bays. This methodology well-recognized is commonly used, particularly in the medical sector, for a long time. The results show that the Oithonidae relative abundance and the Piélou's evenness index are the best indicators of anthropogenic pollution for this case study. Thresholds related to the selected indicators are also proposed in order to characterize the degree of anthropogenic pressure for the Toulon Bay and to provide a first evaluation for potential environmental management. Applicability of the selected indicators and future development needed are also discussed. This study is a first step in the investigation for operational zooplankton indicators and should open the way for additional studies in coastal anthropized area such as the Mediterranean coast where it is more urgently needed.

One of the main public health strategies adopted at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic consisted of implementing strict lockdowns to stop the transmission of the virus. Despite being an effective ...measure, the confinement and the associated social isolation create a stressful, potentially lengthy situations that has been proven to have several psychological consequences. Given the potential benefits that certain psychedelic drugs have shown for the treatment of psychological disorders, this study aimed to assess the impact of lifetime psychedelic drug use on mental health in relation to the first strict lockdown adopted by various countries (April-July 2020).
Subjects completed an online survey that inquired about sociodemographic factors, activities, and lifestyle factors during confinement, as well as health and mental health related factors. Subjects were asked about their lifetime use of psychedelic drugs (MDMA, ayahuasca, psilocybin-containing mushrooms, LSD, peyote, San Pedro, Bufo alvarius or 5-MeO-DMT, and others), being classified as regular users (more than once per 6 months), occasional users, or non-users. The survey included psychometric tests used to assess psychological distress, peritraumatic stress, social support, psychopathological symptoms, and personality. Linear regressions were performed with psychedelic drug users as the independent variable and psychometric factors as the outcomes, while correcting for age, gender, language, religion, spirituality, and use of non-psychedelic drugs.
The study included 2,974 English, Portuguese, and Spanish speakers (497 regular users of psychedelic drugs, 606 occasional users, and 1,968 non-users). On average, respondents were 36 years old and 70% were female. Psychedelic drug users, especially regular ones, reported less psychological distress, less peritraumatic stress, and more social support. Regarding personality measures, psychedelic drug users scored higher on the novelty-seeking and self-transcendence scales, and lower on cooperativeness.
Our findings showed that regular users of psychedelic drugs had less psychological stress and some personality differences when compared to occasional users and non-users. This suggests that either the use of psychedelics might be a protective factor itself or people with certain previous traits are more prone to frequently using psychedelic drugs. Future prospective longitudinal research should investigate the underlying processes observed in this study to develop consistent hypotheses.
