Nanoparticles (NPs) have been proposed as additives to improve the rheological properties of polymer solutions and reduce mechanical degradation. This study presents the results of the retention ...experiment and the numerical simulation of the displacement efficiency of a SiO2/hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM) nanohybrid (CSNH-AC). The CSNH-AC was obtained from SiO2 NPs (synthesized by the Stöber method) chemically modified with HPAM chains. Attenuated total reflection–Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, field emission gun–scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis were used to characterize the nanohybrid. The injectivity and dynamic retention tests were performed at 56 °C in a sandstone core with a porosity of ∼26% and a permeability of 117 and 287 mD. A history matching of the dynamic retention test was performed to determine the maximum and residual adsorption, IPV, and residual resistance factor (RRF). A laboratory-scale model was used to evaluate the displacement efficiency of CSNH-AC and HPAM through numerical simulation. According to the results, the nanohybrid exhibits better rheological behavior than the HPAM solution at a lower concentration. The nanopolymer sol adsorption and IPV (29,7 μg/grock, 14,5) are greater than those of the HPAM solution (9,2 μg/grock, 10), which was attributed to the difference between the rock permeabilities used in the laboratory tests (HPAM: 287 mD and CSNH-AC: 117 mD). The RF of both samples gradually increases with the increase in shear rate, while the RRF slightly decreases and tends to balance. However, the nanopolymer sol exhibits greater RF and RRF values than that of the polymer solution due to the strong flow resistance of the nanohybrid (higher retention in the porous media). According to the field-scale simulation, the incremental oil production could be 295,505 and 174,465 barrels for the nanopolymer sol and the HPAM solution, respectively (compared to waterflooding). This will represent an incremental recovery factor of 11.3% for the nanopolymer sol and 6.7% for the HPAM solution.

Background
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a leading etiological agent of acute respiratory tract infections and hospitalizations in children. However, little information is available regarding ...RSV infections in Latin American countries, particularly among adult patients.
Objective
To describe the epidemiology of RSV infection and to analyze the factors associated with severe infections in children and adults in Mexico.
Methods
Patients ≥1 month old, who presented with an influenza‐like illness (ILI) to six hospitals in Mexico, were eligible for participation in the study. Multiplex reverse‐transcriptase polymerase chain reaction identified viral pathogens in nasal swabs from 5629 episodes of ILI. Patients in whom RSV was detected were included in this report.
Results
Respiratory syncytial virus was detected in 399 children and 171 adults. RSV A was detected in 413 cases and RSV B in 163, including six patients who had coinfection with both subtypes; 414 (72.6%) patients required hospital admission, including 96 (16.8%) patients that required admission to the intensive care unit. Coinfection with one or more respiratory pathogens other than RSV was detected in 159 cases. Young age (in children) and older age (in adults) as well as the presence of some underlying conditions were associated with more severe disease.
Conclusions
This study confirms that RSV is an important respiratory pathogen in children in Mexico. In addition, a substantial number of cases in adults were also detected highlighting the relevance of this virus in all ages. It is important to identify subjects at high risk of complications who may benefit from current or future preventive interventions.

Cognitive comorbidities can substantially reduce quality of life in people with epilepsy. Inflammation is a component of all chronic diseases including epilepsy, as well as acute events like status ...epilepticus (SE). Neuroinflammation is the consequence of several broad signaling cascades including cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2)-associated pathways. Activation of the EP2 receptor for prostaglandin E2 appears responsible for blood-brain barrier leakage and much of the inflammatory reaction, neuronal injury and cognitive deficit that follows seizure-provoked COX-2 induction in brain. Here we show that brief exposure of mice to TG11-77, a potent, selective, orally available and brain permeant EP2 antagonist, eliminates the profound cognitive deficit in Y-maze performance after SE and reduces delayed mortality and microgliosis, with a minimum effective i.p. dose (as free base) of 8.8 mg/kg. All in vitro studies required to submit an investigational new drug (IND) application for TG11-77 have been completed, and non-GLP dose range-finding toxicology in the rat identified no overt, organ or histopathology signs of toxicity after 7 days of oral administration at 1000 mg/kg/day. Plasma exposure in the rat was dose-linear between 15 and 1000 mg/kg dosing. TG11-77 thus appears poised to continue development towards the initial clinical test of the hypothesis that EP2 receptor modulation after SE can provide the first preventive treatment for one of the chief comorbidities of epilepsy.
•Preventing cognitive deficits after status epilepticus and in epilepsy is a major goal in the epilepsy community.•Antagonists of the EP2 receptor quench neuroinflammation caused by cyclooxygenases but avoid toxicities of COX-2 inhibitors.•We demonstrate that blocking EP2 receptors reduces delayed mortality after status epilepticus and rescues a memory deficit.•We present a strong foundation of preclinical data that supports progression of TG11-77 to the clinic.

A search for a narrow Z′ gauge boson with a mass between 5 and 70 GeV resulting from an Lμ−LτU(1) local gauge symmetry is reported. Theories that predict such a particle have been proposed as an ...explanation of various experimental discrepancies, including the lack of a dark matter signal in direct-detection experiments, tension in the measurement of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, and reports of possible lepton flavor universality violation in B meson decays. A data sample of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV is used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 77.3 fb−1 recorded in 2016 and 2017 by the CMS detector at the LHC. Events containing four muons with an invariant mass near the standard model Z boson mass are analyzed, and the selection is further optimized to be sensitive to the events that may contain Z→Z′μμ→4μ decays. The event yields are consistent with the standard model predictions. Upper limits of 10−8–10−7 at 95% confidence level are set on the product of branching fractions B(Z→Z′μμ)B(Z′→μμ), depending on the Z′ mass, which excludes a Z′ boson coupling strength to muons above 0.004–0.3. These are the first dedicated limits on Lμ−Lτ models at the LHC and result in a significant increase in the excluded model parameter space. The results of this search may also be used to constrain the coupling strength of any light Z′ gauge boson to muons.

Abstract
Background
Effective therapeutics for respiratory viruses are needed. Early data suggest that nitazoxanide (NTZ) may be beneficial for treating acute respiratory viral illness.
Methods
From ...March 2014 through March 2017, a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was conducted in 260 participants ≥1 year old hospitalized with influenza-like illness at 6 hospitals in Mexico. Participants were randomized 1:1 to NTZ (age ≥12 years, 600 mg twice daily; age 4–11 years and 1–3 years, 200 or 100 mg twice daily, respectively) or placebo for 5 days in addition to standard of care. The primary endpoint was time from first dose to hospital discharge. Influenza reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction and Respifinder 22 multiplex test were used for virus detection.
Results
Of 260 participants enrolled, 257 were randomized and took at least 1 dose of study treatment (intention-to-treat population): 130 in the NTZ group and 127 in the placebo group. The Kaplan-Meier estimate of the median duration of hospitalization was 6.5 (interquartile range IQR, 4.0–9.0) days in the NTZ group vs 7.0 (IQR, 4.0–9.0) days in the placebo group (P = .56). Duration of hospitalization between the 2 treatments was similar in children (P = .29) and adults (P = .62), influenza A and B (P = .32), and other respiratory viruses. Seven (5.4%) and 6 (4.7%) participants in the NTZ and placebo groups, respectively, reported serious adverse events.
Conclusions
Treatment with NTZ did not reduce the duration of hospital stay in severe influenza-like illness. Further analyses based on age and evaluations by virus did not reveal any subgroups that appeared to benefit from NTZ.

Treatment of children and adults hospitalized with severe acute respiratory illness with nitazoxanide in addition to standard of care was safe, but did not reduce hospital stay, complications, nor shedding of influenza and other respiratory viruses.
To follow-up loci discovered by the International Genomics of Alzheimer's Disease Project, we attempted independent replication of 19 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in a large Spanish sample ...(Fundació ACE data set; 1808 patients and 2564 controls). Our results corroborate association with four SNPs located in the genes INPP5D, MEF2C, ZCWPW1 and FERMT2, respectively. Of these, ZCWPW1 was the only SNP to withstand correction for multiple testing (P=0.000655). Furthermore, we identify TRIP4 (rs74615166) as a novel genome-wide significant locus for Alzheimer's disease risk (odds ratio=1.31; confidence interval 95% (1.19-1.44); P=9.74 × 10(-)(9)).
A search is presented for new physics in events with two low-momentum, oppositely charged leptons (electrons or muons) and missing transverse momentum in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass ...energy of 13 TeV. The data collected using the CMS detector at the LHC correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9fb−1. The observed event yields are consistent with the expectations from the standard model. The results are interpreted in terms of pair production of charginos and neutralinos (χ˜1± and χ˜20) with nearly degenerate masses, as expected in natural supersymmetry models with light higgsinos, as well as in terms of the pair production of top squarks (t˜ ), when the lightest neutralino and the top squark have similar masses. At 95% confidence level, wino-like χ˜1±/χ˜20 masses are excluded up to 230 GeV for a mass difference of 20 GeV relative to the lightest neutralino. In the higgsino-like model, masses are excluded up to 168 GeV for the same mass difference. For t˜ pair production, top squark masses up to 450 GeV are excluded for a mass difference of 40 GeV relative to the lightest neutralino.

Abstract
Background
Human rhinoviruses (HRVs) are a common cause of influenza-like illness, with the ability to infect the upper and lower respiratory tracts. In this study we aim to describe the ...clinical and molecular features of HRV infection in Mexican children and adults.
Methods
We performed a hospital-based, 4-year multicenter prospective observational cohort study of patients with influenza-like illness. Participants who tested positive for HRV were included. We described demographic, clinical, and laboratory characteristics and the association between HRV types, illness severity, and clinical outcomes.
Results
Of the 5662 subjects recruited, 1473 (26%) had HRV; of those, 988 (67.1%) were adults (≥18 years) and 485 (32.9%) were children. One hundred sixty-seven (11.33%) samples were sequenced; 101 (60.5%) were rhinovirus species A (HRV-A), 22 (13.2%) were rhinovirus species B (HRV-B), and 44 (26.3%) were rhinovirus species C (HRV-C). Among children and adults, 30.5% and 23.5%, respectively, were hospitalized (non–intensive care unit ICU). The odds of HRV-C are higher than HRV-A for participants in the ICU (compared to outpatient) and when platelets, lymphocytes, white blood cells, and lactate dehydrogenase are increased. The odds of HRV-C are higher than HRV-A and HRV-B with shortness of breath. The odds of HRV-A are higher than HRV-B, and the odds of HRV-B are higher than HRV-C, when mild symptoms like muscle ache and headache occur.
Conclusions
Rhinoviruses are a common cause of influenza-like illness. It is necessary to improve the surveillance, testing, and species identification for these viruses to understand different clinical presentations and risk factors associated with worse outcomes.

Common Variable Immunodeficiency (CVID) is a heterogeneous disorder characterized by defective B cell differentiation and antibody production. Interleukin (IL)-21 activates STAT3, a potent regulator ...of B cell differentiation into plasma cells. We have studied the phosphorylation of STAT3 in CVID patients and its contribution to B cells subsets.
We studied 23 CVID patients and 14 healthy donors (HD), determining pSTAT3 in naïve and memory B cells, stimulated with IL-21 at 15 and 60 min.
pSTAT3 was increased in total (p = 0.044), naïve (p = 0.023), and memory (p = 0.001) B cells at 60 min in CVID patients compared with HD. We classified patients by the percentage of isotype-switched memory B cells. We observed an increase in pSTAT3 at 60 min in memory B cells in both CVID groups of patients (p = 0.026, p = 0.007, respectively). Interestingly, the analysis of each group individually; demonstrated that patients with decreased memory B cells exhibited an increase in pSTAT3 at 60 min (p = 0.023), while HD had an expected decrease in pSTAT3 (p = 0.045).
CVID patients showed an increased atypical of pSTAT3, which could affect the differentiation of B cells. Further studies in the IL-21 pathway are necessary to understand how this alteration could promote differentiation defects in patient B cells.
