In the last years, high-resolution time tagging has emerged as a promising tool to tackle the problem of high-track density in the detectors of the next generation of experiments at particle ...colliders. Time resolutions below 50 ps and event average repetition rates of tens of MHz on sensor pixels having a pitch of 50 μm are typical minimum requirements. This poses an important scientific and technological challenge on the development of particle sensors and processing electronics. The TIMESPOT initiative (which stands for TIME and SPace real-time Operating Tracker) aims at the development of a full prototype detection system suitable for the particle trackers of the next-to-come particle physics experiments. This paper describes the results obtained on the first batch of TIMESPOT silicon sensors, based on a novel 3D MEMS (micro electro-mechanical systems) design. We demonstrate that following this approach, the performance of other ongoing silicon sensor developments can be matched and overcome. In addition, 3D technology has already been proved to be robust against radiation damage. A time resolution of the order of 20 ps has been measured at room temperature suggesting also possible improvements after further optimisations of the front-end electronics processing stage.

Abstract The exclusive photoproduction reactions γp → J/ψ(1S)p and γp → ψ(2S)p have been measured at an ep centre-of-mass energy of 318 GeV with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated ...luminosity of 373 pb −1. The measurement was made in the kinematic range 30 < W < 180 GeV, Q 2 < 1 GeV2 and |t| < 1 GeV2, where W is the photon-proton centre-of-mass energy, Q 2 is the photon virtuality and t is the squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex. The decay channels used were J/ψ(1S) → μ + μ − , ψ(2S) → μ + μ − and ψ(2S) → J/ψ(1S)π + π − with subsequent decay J/ψ(1S) → μ + μ − . The ratio of the production cross sections, R = σ ψ(2S) /σ J/ψ(1S), has been measured as a function of W and |t| and compared to previous data in photoproduction and deep inelastic scattering and with predictions of QCD-inspired models of exclusive vector-meson production, which are in reasonable agreement with the data.

Collective behaviour of final-state hadrons, and multiparton interactions are studied in high-multiplicity
ep
scattering at a centre-of-mass energy
s
= 318 GeV with the ZEUS detector at ...HERA. Two- and four-particle azimuthal correlations, as well as multiplicity, transverse momentum, and pseudorapidity distributions for charged-particle multiplicities
N
ch
≥ 20 are measured. The dependence of two-particle correlations on the virtuality of the exchanged photon shows a clear transition from photoproduction to neutral current deep inelastic scattering. For the multiplicities studied, neither the measurements in photoproduction processes nor those in neutral current deep inelastic scattering indicate significant collective behaviour of the kind observed in high-multiplicity hadronic collisions at RHIC and the LHC. Comparisons of PYTHIA predictions with the measurements in photoproduction strongly indicate the presence of multiparton interactions from hadronic fluctuations of the exchanged photon.
The exclusive deep inelastic electroproduction of ψ(2S) and J/ψ(1S) at an ep centre-of-mass energy of 317 GeV has been studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA in the kinematic range 2<Q2<80 GeV2, ...30<W<210 GeV and |t|<1 GeV2, where Q2 is the photon virtuality, W is the photon–proton centre-of-mass energy and t is the squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex. The data for 2<Q2<5 GeV2 were taken in the HERA I running period and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 114 pb−1. The data for 5<Q2<80 GeV2 are from both HERA I and HERA II periods and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 468 pb−1. The decay modes analysed were μ+μ− and J/ψ(1S)π+π− for the ψ(2S) and μ+μ− for the J/ψ(1S). The cross-section ratio σψ(2S)/σJ/ψ(1S) has been measured as a function of Q2,W and t. The results are compared to predictions of QCD-inspired models of exclusive vector-meson production.

Objectives
The prognostic utility of lifestyle risk factors and job-related conditions (LS&JRC) for cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk stratification remains to be clarified.
Methods
We investigated ...discrimination and clinical utility of LS&JRC among 2532 workers, 35–64 years old, CVD-free at the time of recruitment (1989–1996) in four prospective cohorts in Northern Italy, and followed up (median 14 years) until first major coronary event or ischemic stroke, fatal or non-fatal. From a Cox model including cigarette smoking, alcohol intake, occupational and sport physical activity and job strain, we estimated 10-year discrimination as the area under the ROC curve (AUC), and clinical utility as the Net Benefit.
Results
N
= 162 events occurred during follow-up (10-year risk: 4.3%). The LS&JRC model showed the same discrimination (AUC = 0.753, 95% CI 0.700–0.780) as blood lipids, blood pressure, smoking and diabetes (AUC = 0.753), consistently across occupational classes. Among workers at low CVD risk (
n
= 1832, 91 CVD events), 687 were at increased LS&JRC risk; of these, 1 every 15 was a case, resulting in a positive Net Benefit (1.27; 95% CI 0.68–2.16).
Conclusions
LS&JRC are as accurate as clinical risk factors in identifying future cardiovascular events among working males. Our results support initiatives to improve total health at work as strategies to prevent cardiovascular disease.

A search for a narrow baryonic state in the pKS0 and p‾KS0 system has been performed in ep collisions at HERA with the ZEUS detector using an integrated luminosity of 358pb−1 taken in 2003–2007. The ...search was performed with deep inelastic scattering events at an ep centre-of-mass energy of 318GeV for exchanged photon virtuality, Q2, between 20 and 100GeV2. Contrary to evidence presented for such a state around 1.52 GeV in a previous ZEUS analysis using a sample of 121 pb−1 taken in 1996–2000, no resonance peak was found in the p(p‾)KS0 invariant-mass distribution in the range 1.45–1.7 GeV. Upper limits on the production cross section are set.
