PurposeMacular retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) hypopigmentation is a recently described very rare condition and its pathogenesis is not completely understood. We report the case of a 23-year-old ...female who presented with bilateral whitish, oval-shaped foveal lesions and we speculated about the possible etiopathogenetic origin. ObservationsA 23-year-old female presented to our consideration for a routine ophthalmology visit. Visual acuity was 20/20 in both eyes. The fundus examination revealed a perifoveal choroidal nevus in the right eye and a bilateral yellowish, oval-shaped lesion centered on the fovea. Imaging tests (Spectral Domain-Optical Coherence Tomography, short wavelength and near-infrared autofluorescence) and functional tests (microperimetry and multifocal electroretinogram) were within normal limits, supporting the diagnosis of macular hypopigmentation without functional loss. ConclusionsA complex dysregulation of both choroidal and RPE with melanin loss may be responsible for this condition.

PurposeTo report a case of progressive resolution of exudation in a patient affected by perifoveal vascular anomalous complex (PVAC) undergoing topical diclofenac therapy. ObservationsA 74-year-old ...man presented to our department with visual decrease in his right eye lasting six months. Lack of clinical history of arterial hypertension, diabetes, or any other systemic or local vasculopathy, together with retinal multimodal imaging, led to the diagnosis of exudative (e)PVAC. Serial spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) examinations documented a resolution of intraretinal exudation after one-month topical diclofenac therapy. Conclusion and ImportanceInitiation of topical diclofenac was associated with resolution of exudation, therefore we hypothesize its potential role in the treatment of ePVAC.

PURPOSEto report the presence of a new structural optical coherence tomography (OCT) finding, namely subretinal pseudocysts, in a patient affected by diabetic retinopathy (DR). OBSERVATIONSA ...52-year-old man affected by type 2 diabetes from 10 years was referred to our department complaining of a visual decline in both eyes. Best corrected visual acuity was 20/100 and 20/80 in the right and left eye, respectively. Fundus examination, fluorescein angiography, and structural OCT revealed the presence of a proliferative DR with diabetic macular edema in both eyes. Interestingly, structural OCT showed subretinal pseudocystic spaces inside the subretinal fluid of the macular neuroretinal detachment. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPORTANCESubretinal pseudocysts are a new structural OCT entity. We reported for the first time the evidence that pseudocysts may develop in the subretinal space in a case of diabetic macular edema.

PURPOSETo report a case of a patient affected by branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) showing a possible spontaneous retinal-choroidal anastomosis (RCA) at the level of the fovea. OBSERVATIONSA 72 ...years old male patient with diagnosis of BRVO of left eye (LE) one year before came to our observation for a follow-up visit. The patient underwent a complete ophthalmologic examination, including fluorescein angiography, structural optical coherence tomography (OCT), OCT-Angiography (OCT-A). Interestingly, OCT-A revealed the presence of blood flow suggestive of single collateral vessel descending from the deep capillary plexus up to and possibly below a hyperreflective subfoveal deposit. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPORTANCEWe hypothesize that it can represent a RCA, starting from retinal capillaries and reaching the choriocapillary and choroidal vessels in order to allow a vascular shunt between the 2 circulations and thus a new passage for the blood flow. A similar condition is represented by laser-induced RCA for the treatment of non-ischemic central retinal vein occlusion in order to establish a new passage for the blood flow.

Second-harmonic-generation (SHG) microscopy has emerged as a powerful tool to image unstained living tissues and probe their molecular and supramolecular organization. In this article, we review the ...physical basis of SHG, highlighting how coherent summation of second-harmonic response leads to the sensitivity of polarized SHG to the three-dimensional distribution of emitters within the focal volume. Based on the physical description of the process, we examine experimental applications for probing the molecular organization within a tissue and its alterations in response to different biomedically relevant conditions. We also describe the approach for obtaining information on molecular conformation based on SHG polarization anisotropy measurements and its application to the study of myosin conformation in different physiological states of muscle. The capability of coupling the advantages of nonlinear microscopy (micrometer-scale resolution in deep tissue) with tools for probing molecular structure
renders SHG microscopy an extremely powerful tool for the advancement of biomedical optics, with particular regard to novel technologies for molecular diagnostic

The in vitro cultivation technique of banana plants faces the problem of oxidation of the stem apex in the establishment phase. The objective of this work was to evaluate the use of the combination of citric acid and potassium citrate, to reduce the in vitro oxidation of 'Maçã' banana plants. The explants, measuring 15 mm of pseudostem and 5 mm of rhizome, were established in the MS medium with half concentration of the macronutrients. The treatments were organized in factorial design 2x2x2 (with and without pre-treatment of antioxidants for 90 minutes, with and without the addition of the antioxidants in the medium and with and without subculture to the 15 days after the inoculation). Each treatment was constituted by 15 stem apexes. The oxidation degree and the number of buds in the first and in the second re-culture were evaluated. The smallest oxidation degree was obtained with the pre-treatment of the stem apexes in 0,25 g L-1 of citric acid plus 0,75 g L-1 of potassium citrate, without the addition of these antioxidants to the medium of cultivation and without subculture.
