The Pisco and wine industry in Chile generates about 400,000 tonnes/year of grape pomace as organic wastes (OWs). This material can be composted and used as organic fertilizer or amendment in grape ...orchards located in inceptisol soils with a very low organic matter as a strategy to increase soil and grape quality. The maturity and the stabilization of compost define the potential use of OWs as an amendment. Therefore, the objectives of the present study were focused to evaluate the evolution of chemical, microbiological, biochemical and phytotoxicity parameters during the composting process using grape marc and other components. The experimental study consisted of nine opened piles constituted by grape pomace, goat or horse manure. The piles were evaluated for 180 days in winter-spring seasons and mechanical turns were carried out every 10 days. The results indicated that humic to fulvic acids content ratio (Ha/Fa) could be used as process evolution indicator. The potential enzymatic activity of alkaline phosphatase and β-glucosidase, and microbiological functional groups like cellulolytic, amylolytic and phosphate solubilizing bacteria were strongly correlated with production of fulvic and humic acids (p ≤ 0.01). The compost derived from treatments complies with Chilean National Standard - NCh 2880/04, 2016 for the quality of organic amendments including low phytotoxicity with a radish germination %> 92% and absence of Salmonella sp., and fecal coliforms <1000 NMP/g. In conclusion, quality parameters evaluated showed sensitivity to evaluate both the composting process and compost quality.

Land-use changes often have significant impact on the water cycle, including changing groundwater/surface-water interactions, modifying groundwater recharge zones, and increasing risk of ...contamination. Surface runoff in particular is significantly impacted by land cover. As surface runoff can act as a carrier for contaminants found at the surface, it is important to characterize runoff dynamics in anthropogenic environments. In this study, the relationship between surface runoff and groundwater recharge in urban areas is explored using a top-down water balance approach. Two empirical models were used to estimate runoff: (1) an updated, advanced method based on curve number, followed by (2) bivariate hydrograph separation. Modifications were added to each method in an attempt to better capture continuous soil-moisture processes and explicitly account for runoff from impervious surfaces. Differences between the resulting runoff estimates shed light on the complexity of the rainfall–runoff relationship, and highlight the importance of understanding soil-moisture dynamics and their control on hydro(geo)logical responses. These results were then used as input in a water balance to calculate groundwater recharge. Two approaches were used to assess the accuracy of these groundwater balance estimates: (1) comparison to calculations of groundwater recharge using the calibrated conceptual HBV Light model, and (2) comparison to groundwater recharge estimates from physically similar catchments in Switzerland that are found in the literature. In all cases, recharge is estimated at approximately 40–45% of annual precipitation. These conditions were found to closely echo those results from Swiss catchments of similar characteristics.

SummaryBackgroundExtraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma is a rare sarcoma with low sensitivity to cytotoxic chemotherapy. Retrospective evidence suggests that antiangiogenic drugs could be a treatment ...option. We aimed to investigate the activity of pazopanib, an antiangiogenic drug, in patients with advanced extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma. MethodsIn this single-arm, open-label phase 2 trial, three parallel independent cohorts of different histotypes of advanced sarcomas were recruited (extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma, typical solitary fibrous tumour, and malignant-dedifferentiated solitary fibrous tumour). In each cohort, patients received pazopanib. In this Article, we report the results of the cohort of patients with advanced extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma. Separate reporting of the three cohorts was prespecified in the study protocol. In this cohort, adult patients (aged ≥18 years) with a diagnosis of NR4A3-translocated, metastatic, or unresectable extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma, who had Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (RECIST) progression in the previous 6 months, and had an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status of 0–2, were enrolled at 11 study sites of the Spanish, Italian, and French sarcoma groups. Patients received oral pazopanib (800 mg/day) continuously, until disease progression, unacceptable toxicity, death, non-compliance, patient refusal, or investigator's decision. The primary endpoint was the proportion of patients achieving an objective response according to RECIST 1·1 in the modified intention-to-treat population (patients who provided consent and had a central molecularly confirmed diagnosis of extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma). The safety analysis included all patients who received at least one dose of pazopanib. This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT02066285. FindingsBetween June 24, 2014, and Jan 17, 2017, 26 patients entered the study and started pazopanib. Of these, 23 met the eligibility criteria for the modified intention-to-treat analysis. Median follow-up was 27 months (IQR 18–30). 22 patients (one patient died before the primary analysis) were evaluable for the primary endpoint: four (18% 95% CI 1–36) had a RECIST objective response. No deaths or grade 4 adverse events occurred. The most frequent grade 3 adverse events were hypertension (nine 35% of 26 patients), increased concentration of alanine aminotransferase (six 23%), and increased aspartate aminotransferase (five 19%). InterpretationPazopanib had clinically meaningful antitumour activity in patients with progressive and advanced extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma, and could be considered a suitable option after failure to respond to first-line anthracycline-based chemotherapy in these patients. Chikungunya virus causes fever and severe polyarthritis or arthralgia and is associated with neurologic manifestations that are sometimes challenging to diagnose. We demonstrate intrathecal synthesis ...of chikungunya antibodies in a patient with a history of acute infection complicated by encephalitis. The specificity of the intracerebral immune response supports early chikungunya-associated encephalitis diagnosis.

The aim of this study is to provide data to better understand the processes of early mathematical modelling. According to this, an early mathematical modelling activity carried out by 21 Spanish ...schoolchildren aged 5–6 years is analysed, using the validated tool “Rubric for the Evaluation of Mathematical Modelling Processes” (REMMP). The results show that children link the content of the problem with their prior knowledge (understanding); identify the important data of the problem and simplify it (structuring); show some difficulties in substituting the elements of the real context for mathematical objects (mathematizing); use progressively mathematical objects and strategies in order to propose solutions for the problem (working mathematically); compare the solution with the initial problem (interpretation); justify the proposed model via valid arguments (validation); and also communicate the decisions taken throughout the modelling process and the concrete model obtained applied to the real context (presenting). We conclude that the description of this type of activities and the tools for their analysis could be used for grading and teaching tool in order to promote mathematic modelling in early childhood education.

Trace elements such as Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn are essential minerals in fish diets, especially important at early larval stages. The chemical speciation of these elements directly influences their uptake ...efficiency and metabolic utilization. In order to optimize the form of trace elements incorporated into larval feed, two experiments were conducted using two commercial fish species, European seabass (
Dicentrarchus labrax
) and Senegalese sole (
Solea senegalensis
), and two chemical forms (inorganic and glycinate chelates). Several fish performance parameters were measured, as well as bone status parameters to assess which form of mineral results in optimal fish biological performance. European seabass and Senegalese sole post-larvae were unresponsive (
P
> 0.05) to dietary treatments in terms of dry weight (DW), standard length (SL), relative growth rate (RGR) or feed conversion rates (FCR) when fed diets supplemented with chelated over inorganic trace minerals. This study suggests that replacing dietary inorganic mineral supplementation by their organic glycinate-chelated forms brings no beneficial effects on somatic growth and bone development in Senegalese sole and European seabass post-larvae fed high-quality commercial microdiets. Additionally, we show that mineral leaching from diets can be significant, but the use of chelated minerals can potentially mitigate this leaching phenomenon. Therefore, the selection of the dietary mineral form should take into account not only their economic value, but also their biological effect and environmental impact. Data generated in this trial provides new knowledge in trace mineral nutrition of early-stage marine fish.

Background
New versions of the polyester polymer alloy (PEPA) membrane have appeared over the years, with increases in both the pore size and the amount of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) to optimize ...hydrophilicity performance. This study aimed to assess the efficacy of the most recently developed PEPA dialyzer, the FDY series, in hemodialysis (HD) modality in terms of uremic toxin removal and albumin loss and to compare it with that of several high‐flux dialyzers currently used in HD and post‐dilution hemodiafiltration (HDF) treatments.
Methods
A prospective study was carried out in 21 patients. All patients underwent six dialysis sessions with the same routine dialysis parameters; only the dialyzer and/or the dialysis modality varied: FX80 in HD, FDY 180 in HD, Clearum HS17 in HDF, Elisio 19H in HDF, Vitapes 180 in HDF, and FX80 in post‐dilution HDF. The reduction ratios (RR) of urea, creatinine, ß2‐microglobulin, myoglobin, κFLC, prolactin, α1‐microglobulin, α1‐acid glycoprotein, λFLC, and albumin were compared intraindividually. Dialysate albumin loss was also measured.
Results
Both membranes FDY and FX80 are high‐flux dialyzers and are applied here in high‐flux HD. The average RR of β2‐microglobulin was slightly lower in the two HD treatments than in the HDF treatments. Comparison of dialysis treatments revealed that the PEPA FDY dialyzer in the HD modality was more effective than the FX80 dialyzer in high‐flux HD and was as effective as post‐dilution HDF, especially in terms of myoglobin, κFLC, prolactin, α1‐microglobulin, and λFLC RRs. The FDY treatments obtained similar albumin RR in blood and slightly higher dialysate albumin loss, although the values were clinically acceptable.
Conclusions
The most recently developed PEPA dialyzers in the HD modality were as effective as all treatments in the HDF modality and were clearly superior to high‐flux helixone HD treatment. These results confirm that this dialyzer should be categorized within the medium cut‐off (MCO) membrane classification.
Most recently developed PEPA dialyzers, FDY series, in HD modality, obtained similar efficacy to HDF treatments, and it was clearly superior over high‐flux HD treatment.
These results confirm that this dialyzer responds to the medium cut‐off membrane classification.

This article analyses the discourse of individuals who go through the same experience within the context of self-imposed exile. The subjects involved are the American writers Evelyn Scott (née Elsie ...Dunn, 1893-1963) and Cyril Kay-Scott (né Frederick Kreighton Wellman, 1874-1960). They scandalised their Southern society when, in 1913, they fled Louisiana and eloped to London and then Brazil with little money and no passports. Their experiences were extraordinary. After years of a semi-nomadic existence eking out a living in different parts of Brazil, the Scotts ended up in the country's arid north-eastern backlands confronting isolation, poverty and near starvation. This work investigates the couple's perception of the years they shared in the tropics. Carrying with them elite New Orleans values, how did they respond to the hardships of early twentieth-century Brazil? How did gender and emotion affect their daily lives and discourses about the same events? What specific events of their experiences were shared? Given that in different periods they wrote autobiographies about their lives in Brazil, the analysis is based on Evelyn Scott's Escapade (1923 1995) and Cyril Kay-Scott's Life is too short (1943). Results indicate that their survival in Brazil was unequally challenging, leading them to produce dissonant discourses.
