IMPORTANCE: The effect of high-flow oxygen therapy vs conventional oxygen therapy has not been established in the setting of severe COVID-19. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of high-flow oxygen ...therapy through a nasal cannula compared with conventional oxygen therapy on need for endotracheal intubation and clinical recovery in severe COVID-19. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Randomized, open-label clinical trial conducted in emergency and intensive care units in 3 hospitals in Colombia. A total of 220 adults with respiratory distress and a ratio of partial pressure of arterial oxygen to fraction of inspired oxygen of less than 200 due to COVID-19 were randomized from August 2020 to January 2021, with last follow-up on February 10, 2021. INTERVENTIONS: Patients were randomly assigned to receive high-flow oxygen through a nasal cannula (n = 109) or conventional oxygen therapy (n = 111). MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: The co–primary outcomes were need for intubation and time to clinical recovery until day 28 as assessed by a 7-category ordinal scale (range, 1-7, with higher scores indicating a worse condition). Effects of treatments were calculated with a Cox proportional hazards model adjusted for hypoxemia severity, age, and comorbidities. RESULTS: Among 220 randomized patients, 199 were included in the analysis (median age, 60 years; n = 65 women 32.7%). Intubation occurred in 34 (34.3%) randomized to high-flow oxygen therapy and in 51 (51.0%) randomized to conventional oxygen therapy (hazard ratio, 0.62; 95% CI, 0.39-0.96; P = .03). The median time to clinical recovery within 28 days was 11 (IQR, 9-14) days in patients randomized to high-flow oxygen therapy vs 14 (IQR, 11-19) days in those randomized to conventional oxygen therapy (hazard ratio, 1.39; 95% CI, 1.00-1.92; P = .047). Suspected bacterial pneumonia occurred in 13 patients (13.1%) randomized to high-flow oxygen and in 17 (17.0%) of those randomized to conventional oxygen therapy, while bacteremia was detected in 7 (7.1%) vs 11 (11.0%), respectively. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Among patients with severe COVID-19, use of high-flow oxygen through a nasal cannula significantly decreased need for mechanical ventilation support and time to clinical recovery compared with conventional low-flow oxygen therapy. El presente trabajo analiza la dimensión subjetiva de la vulnerabilidad-capacidad de familias desplazadas por un terremoto en Chile. Se utilizó un diseño de caso cualitativo seleccionando, vía ...muestreo teórico, 10 jefas de hogar y tres agentes institucionales vinculados con el desplazamiento y reconstrucción habitacional posdesastre. Los datos son producidos mediante la entrevista episódica, utilizando como estrategia de análisis el proceso de codificación de la teoría fundamentada. Como primer resultado, se encuentran diferencias en los significados asignados al desplazamiento por las instituciones respondedoras y las familias reubicadas. A nivel institucional, predominó una razón instrumental del habitar reducida a la facilitación de satisfactores para la sobrevivencia y a la mera ocupación topográfica de un espacio físico-material. Mientras que, para las familias reubicadas, vivir en el campamento constituyó una intensificación de la "experiencia continua de vulnerabilización", significándolo como un "no lugar" de tránsito circunstancial. En un segundo resultado, se identificaron cuatro capacidades familiares de afrontamiento, las cuales, si bien no subvirtieron la vulnerabilidad social estructural, posibilitaron la emergencia de cuatro configuraciones tácticas de agenciamiento resistente ante el desastre: resignación, individualismo, ocultamiento y solidaridad. Las conclusiones sostienen la importancia de integrar la dimensión subjetiva de la vulnerabilidad-capacidad ante el proceso de desplazamiento ambiental, con el fin de orientar procesos de reubicación e intervención psicosocial sustentados en una perspectiva multidimensional del habitar.

Agave lechuguilla Torr., of the family Agavaceae, is distributed from southwestern United States to southern Mexico and is one of the most representative species of arid and semiarid regions. Its ...fiber is extracted for multiple purposes. The objective of this study was to generate a robust model to predict dry fiber yield (Dfw) rapidly, simply, and inexpensively. We used a power model in its linear form and bioclimatic areas as dummy variables. Training, generation (80%) and validation (20%) of the model was performed using machine learning with the package 'caret' of R. Using canonical correlation analysis (CCA), we evaluated the relationship of Dwf to bioclimatic variables. The principal components analysis (PCA) generated two bioclimatic zones, each with different A. lechuguilla productivities. We evaluated 499 individuals in four states of Mexico. The crown diameter (Cd) of this species adequately predicts its fiber dry weight (R.sup.2 = 0.6327; p < 0.05). The intercept (beta.sub.0 ), slope lnCd (beta.sub.1 ), zone (beta.sub.2 ) and interaction lnCd:Zona (beta.sub.3 ) of the dummy model was statistically significant (p < 0.05), giving origin to an equation for each bioclimatic zone. The CCA indicates a positive correlation between minimum temperature of the coldest month (Bio 6) and Dwf (r = 0.84 and p < 0.05). In conclusion, because of the decrease in Bio 6 of more than 0.5°C by 2050, the species could be vulnerable to climate change, and A. lechuguilla fiber production could be affected gradually in the coming years.

Antecedentes: nos encontramos ante una crisis global que amenaza la subsistencia del planeta. Aunque durante las últimas décadas se han propuesto un conjunto de medidas para enfrentar esta crisis ...global, los resultados no han sido auspiciosos. Estado del arte: dado el importante rol de los profesionales en la sociedad, en este trabajo se argumenta que un desarrollo sistemático de la identidad profesional en la formación inicial, es clave para el desarrollo sustentable. Se propone que esta identidad profesional podría construirse en base a las dimensiones (a) integración de saberes subjetivos, profesionales y científicos, (b) creatividad para abordar los problemas actuales y futuros, (c) prosocial y (d) ecológica . El objetivo de este trabajo es sustentar la urgencia de esto para dar respuesta a la crisis global y proporcionar sugerencias que orienten el desarrollo sistemático de la identidad profesional durante la formación inicial, en base a estas dimensiones. Conclusiones: a partir de la literatura científica, se argumenta la necesidad de formar sistemáticamente la identidad profesional en base a estas dimensiones, proporcionando sugerencias al respecto.

Se exploran las dinámicas sociopolíticas derivadas de los aluviones de mayo de 2017 en la comuna de Copiapó, región de Atacama, Chile. Asumiendo una perspectiva procesual, se examinan las relaciones ...entre las prácticas de organización y contestación local, frente a las políticas del espacio bajo el contexto de las inundaciones y los procesos de rehabilitación posterior. Se exploran teóricamente algunas de las principales discusiones conceptuales en torno a la justicia espacial, vinculándolas al campo de los riesgos y desastres socionaturales. En esta perspectiva, se busca identificar y caracterizar las dinámicas sociopolíticas de los actores locales en tres puntos críticos localizados tanto en el área urbana como en sectores periurbanos y rurales en la comuna de Copiapó. Para el análisis, se recurrió a una combinación de estrategias de etnografía contemporánea. El análisis empírico muestra que estas dinámicas asumen configuraciones tácticas diferenciadas de afrontamiento; no obstante, a diferencia de los aluviones de 2015, en los que las explicaciones tendieron a los elementos naturalistas del desastre, el periodo estudiado presenta una marcada transición hacia una explicación híbrida con fuerte énfasis en los elementos políticos, expresada en críticas hacia el rol del Estado subsidiario. Como consecuencia, se configuran marcos de explicación de tipo socionatural del desastre.Ideas destacadas: artículo de investigación sobre los vínculos teóricos entre justicia espacial y riesgos de desastres socionaturales, a partir de una serie de experiencias empíricas derivadas de los aluviones ocurridos en 2017 en la comuna de Copiapó. Se examinan las formas de agenciamiento y las dinámicas sociopolíticas en tres comunidades y territorios durante el proceso de recuperación.
El incremento de eventos extremos —a causa del cambio climático— conlleva no solo a la necesidad local de fortalecer las capacidades de afrontamiento y de resiliencia a nivel comunitario, sino ...también, al replanteo sobre la idoneidad de los planes formativos universitarios en el desarrollo de profesionales competentes ante estos nuevos riesgos emergentes. Bajo este contexto, el presente trabajo tuvo como objetivo valorar la implementación de un proceso de diagnóstico de necesidades comunitarias ante un desastre climático, esto mediante la aplicación metodológica de la estrategia de aprendizaje-servicio (ApS) en un curso de estudiantes de psicología en Chile. Para esto seleccionamos un estudio de caso representativo de gestión comunitaria ante un desastre climático en el norte de Chile, esto bajo un diseño de investigación acción-participativa (IAP). Los datos son producidos mediante la triangulación intermétodo de seis técnicas, esquematizando los resultados del proceso de aprendizaje en cuatro áreas: i) teórico-conceptual, ii) metodológica, iii) práctica y iv) ético-política. Los resultados relevan el uso de ApS en el proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje del diagnóstico comunitario, identificando tanto ventajas como limitaciones en el desarrollo de competencias disciplinares, transversales profesionales y del servicio entregado. Se concluye con la importancia de integrar estrategias horizontales, participativas y situadas en los procesos de enseñanza profesional, esto acorde al tipo de formación universitaria integral que requiere la problemática psicosocial compleja del cambio climático
Pro-environmental behaviors towards climate change can be measured and evaluated in different fields. Typically, surveys are the standard tool for extracting personal information regarding this ...phenomenon. However, statistical modeling for these surveys is not straightforward, as the response variable is often not explicit. Hence, we propose a set of methodological procedures to deal with pro-environmental behavior data. First, validity evidence through a factorial analysis. Second, indexes are created from factor scores, where one of the latent factors summarizes a target variable. Third, a Beta regression is used to model the index of interest. Fourth, the inferential process is performed from a Bayesian perspective, in which posterior probabilities are used to sort and select the relevant variables. Finally, suitable models are obtained, and conclusions can be drawn from them. As a motivation, we used data from two Chilean surveys to illustrate our methodology as well as interpret and discuss the results.

The increase in population aging establishes new risk scenarios in the face of the intensification of disasters due to climate change; however, previous experiences and collective memory would ...generate opportunities for older people to acquire adaptive and coping capacities in the face of these events.
To analyze the theoretical-methodological characteristics presented by the studies carried out between the years 2012 and 2022 about the experience and collective memory of the older adult in the face of climate change.
A systematic literature review (SLR) was carried out following the guidelines of the PRISMA statement. The databases consulted were Web of Science, Scopus, EBSCO host, and Redalyc, selecting 40 articles in Spanish, English, and Portuguese.
The importance of experience and collective memory in the face of disasters as an adaptive factor in older people was identified. In addition, sharing experiences allows them to give new meaning to what happened, emphasizing confidence in their personal resources and self-management capacity and fostering perceived empowerment.
It is essential that in future studies the knowledge provided by the older adult can be privileged, recognizing the importance of their life histories and favoring the active role in their development and wellbeing.
Wastes from artichoke and broccoli crops and cannery industries represent an environmental problem. A viable option to this problem is ensiling them for use as ruminants feed. The aim of this study ...was to characterise the ensiling process of broccoli and artichoke by-products and assess their suitability to be part of the ruminant diet, as well their minimum shelf life. Twenty-one commercial round bale silos (300 kg and 0.64 m
) of each by-product were made. Samples were analysed at days 0, 7, 15, 30, 60, and 200 to determine microbial populations, fermentation metabolites, nutritional components, and phytosanitary residues. Feedstuffs showed good suitability for ensiling, and stabilisation was achieved on day 30. The variables with the greatest significant differences among sampling times were microbial populations and fermentative components. There were no important dry matter losses, and some significant differences were observed in the nutritional composition, especially in crude protein and fibrous fractions, but they were not relevant for the loss of nutritional quality of silages. The phytosanitary residues determined on day 200 were below the maximum residue limits set by European legislation. So, ensiling these by-products in commercial round bale silos is a suitable and profitable technique that allows their preservation for a long time (200 days).
