The Coulomb interaction between two protons is included in the calculation of proton-deuteron breakup and of three-body electromagnetic disintegration of {sup 3}He. The hadron dynamics is based on ...the purely nucleonic charge-dependent (CD) Bonn potential and its realistic extension, CD Bonn + {delta}, to a coupled-channel two-baryon potential, allowing for single virtual {delta}-isobar excitation. Calculations are done using integral equations in momentum space. The screening and renormalization approach is employed for including the Coulomb interaction. Convergence of the procedure is found at moderate screening radii. The reliability of the method is demonstrated. The Coulomb effect on breakup observables is seen at all energies in particular kinematic regimes.

The first 2 months of spectroscopic and photometric monitoring of the nearby Type Ic SN 2007gr are presented. The very early discovery (less than 5 days after the explosion) and the relatively short ...distance of the host galaxy motivated an extensive observational campaign. SN 2007gr shows an average peak luminosity but unusually narrow spectral lines and an almost flat photospheric velocity profile. The detection of prominent carbon features in the spectra is shown and suggests a wide range in carbon abundance in stripped-envelope supernovae. SN 2007gr may be an important piece in the puzzle of the observed diversity of CC SNe.
Long-duration γ-ray bursts (GRBs) are associated with type Ic supernovae that are more luminous than average and that eject material at very high velocities. Less-luminous supernovae were not ...hitherto known to be associated with GRBs, and therefore GRB-supernovae were thought to be rare events. Whether X-ray flashes-analogues of GRBs, but with lower luminosities and fewer γ-rays-can also be associated with supernovae, and whether they are intrinsically 'weak' events or typical GRBs viewed off the axis of the burst, is unclear. Here we report the optical discovery and follow-up observations of the type Ic supernova SN 2006aj associated with X-ray flash XRF 060218. Supernova 2006aj is intrinsically less luminous than the GRB-supernovae, but more luminous than many supernovae not accompanied by a GRB. The ejecta velocities derived from our spectra are intermediate between these two groups, which is consistent with the weakness of both the GRB output and the supernova radio flux. Our data, combined with radio and X-ray observations, suggest that XRF 060218 is an intrinsically weak and soft event, rather than a classical GRB observed off-axis. This extends the GRB-supernova connection to X-ray flashes and fainter supernovae, implying a common origin. Events such as XRF 060218 are probably more numerous than GRB-supernovae.

The four-nucleon bound state and scattering below three-body breakup threshold are described based on the realistic coupled-channel potential CD Bonn+Δ which allows the excitation of a single nucleon ...to a Δ isobar. The Coulomb repulsion between protons is included. In the four-nucleon system the two-baryon coupled-channel potential yields effective two-, three- and four-nucleon forces, mediated by the Δ isobar and consistent with each other and with the underlying two-nucleon force. The effect of the four-nucleon force on the studied observables is much smaller than the effect of the three-nucleon force. The inclusion of the Δ isobar is unable to resolve the existing discrepancies with the experimental data.

Theoretical predictions for sample observables of three-nucleon and four-nucleon reactions are reviewed. The focus is on Coulomb force effects. The calculations are based on the ...Alt–Grassberger–Sandhas version of the Faddeev equations. The calculations are done in momentum space. The calculational technique used to include the Coulomb repulsion between protons screens the infinite Coulomb tail, renormalizes the results and thereby corrects them for screening. The competition between three-nucleon force and Coulomb force effects as well as the Coulomb domination in special kinematic situations of reactions are discussed. Reactions connected by charge symmetry are reviewed. Special reaction observables are studied, in search for the hadronic violation of charge symmetry in the nuclear interaction and for its competition with the charge-asymmetric Coulomb force.

High precision cross-section data of the deuteron–proton breakup reaction at 130 MeV deuteron energy are compared with the theoretical predictions obtained with a coupled-channel extension of the CD ...Bonn potential with virtual Δ-isobar excitation, without and with inclusion of the long-range Coulomb force. The Coulomb effect is studied on the basis of the cross-section data set, extended in this work to about 1500 data points by including breakup geometries characterized by small polar angles of the two protons. The experimental data clearly prefer predictions obtained with the Coulomb interaction included. The strongest effects are observed in regions in which the relative energy of the two protons is the smallest.

, pp)n breakup reaction at 130 MeV deuteron beam energy has been measured in the domain of very forward polar angles with the use of the ...Germanium Wall detector at the Forschungszentrum Jülich. The data obtained for over 1000 kinematical points (112 geometries) are compared with the theoretical predictions based on various models of the three-nucleon (3N) dynamics. They comprise: the realistic nucleon-nucleon potentials alone or combined with the three-nucleon force (3NF), the coupled-channel calculations with the explicit treatment of the
Δ
-isobar excitation and finally, the potentials derived from chiral perturbation theory. In the part of the phase space studied, the Coulomb interaction between protons has a strong impact on the differential cross section of the breakup reaction. The strongest Coulomb effects are found in regions where the relative energy of the two protons is the smallest. In these regions the data are well reproduced exclusively by calculations which include the electromagnetic repulsion between protons. In spite of the dominance of the Coulomb force in the phase space studied, the contribution of 3NF effects is also observed.

We present a precise measurement of double-polarization asymmetries in the 3He(e,e'd) reaction. This particular process is a uniquely sensitive probe of hadron dynamics in 3He and the structure of ...the underlying electromagnetic currents. The measurements have been performed in and around quasi-elastic kinematics at Q2=0.25(GeV/c)2 for missing momenta up to 270MeV/c. The asymmetries are in fair agreement with the state-of-the-art calculations in terms of their functional dependencies on pm and omega, but are systematically offset. Beyond the region of the quasi-elastic peak, the discrepancies become even more pronounced. Thus, our measurements have been able to reveal deficiencies in the most sophisticated calculations of the three-body nuclear system, and indicate that further refinement in the treatment of their two- and/or three-body dynamics is required.
