The GANDALF 6U-VME64x/VXS module has been developed to cope with a variety of readout tasks in nuclear physics experiments and is operated at the COMPASS-II experiment at CERN. Based on this module, ...a 128-channel Time-to-Digital Converter with a time resolution of 93 ps has been implemented successfully in a Xilinx Virtex-5 FPGA using a shifted clock sampling algorithm. Beyond that, the design was extended by adding scaler channels for simultaneous rate measurements.

The COMPASS experiment is a fixed target experiment at the CERN SPS using muon and hadron beams for the investigation of the spin structure of the nucleon and hadron spectroscopy. The main objective ...of the muon physics program is the study of the spin of the nucleon in terms of its constituents, quarks and gluons. COMPASS has accumulated data during 6 years scattering polarized muons off longitudinally or transversely polarized deuteron (6LiD) or proton (NH3) targets. Results for the gluon polarization are obtained from longitudinal double spin cross section asymmetries using two different channels, open charm production and high transverse momentum hadron pairs, both proceeding through the photon-gluon fusion process. Also, the longitudinal spin structure functions of the proton and the deuteron were measured in parallel as well as the helicity distributions for the three lightest quark flavours. With a transversely polarized target, results were obtained with proton and deuteron targets for the Collins and Sivers asymmetries for charged hadrons as well as for identified kaons and pions. The Collins asymmetry is sensitive to the transverse spin structure of the nucleon, while the Sivers asymmetry reflects correlations between the quark transverse momentum and the nucleon spin. Recently, a new proposal for the COMPASS II experiment was accepted by the CERN SPS which includes two new topics: Exclusive reactions like DVCS and DVMP using the muon beam and a hydrogen target to study generalized parton distributions and Drell-Yan measurements using a pion beam and a polarized NH3 target to study transverse momentum dependent distributions.
The search for molecular markers in AML that allow prediction of outcome has recently focused on genes involved in the regulation of programmed cell death (PCD). The aim of our study was to determine ...whether mRNA levels of Mdm-2, Bcl-2, Bcl-x(L), Bad, and Bax are independent prognostic parameters for outcome. Transcript levels were analyzed by real-time quantitative RT-PCR in 232 samples collected either at diagnosis or following induction chemotherapy (ICT). Multivariate COX regression analysis adjusted for chemotherapy protocol, de novo vs secondary AML, and de novo vs relapsed AML indicated: (1) At diagnosis, high expression of Bad (P = 0.015) and even more so high Bax and Bad levels (P = 0.018) predicted adverse outcome, regardless of the response to ICT. In patients who subsequently failed to enter complete remission (CR), high levels of Bad, Bax and Bax high/Bad high were associated with an increased relative risk (RR) to die from tumor (RR = 5.0 for Bad, 3.4 for Bax and 6.14 for Bax high/Bad high). (2) Following ICT, high expression of Bax (P= 0.005) and high Bcl-2/Bax ratios (P = 0.004) were independent predictors of unfavorable outcome, regardless of response to ICT. We conclude that high levels of Bax and Bad correlate with poor outcome, particularly in patients who do not enter CR and may serve as prognostic markers in AML.

An R&D project is presented, aimed to develop a high performance gaseous detector of single photons, for the upgrade of the Ring Imaging Cherenkov Counter RICH-1 of the COMPASS Experiment at CERN ...SPS. The detector has to stably operate at high gain and high rate, to provide good time resolution and insensitivity to magnetic field, and to offer the possibility to cover very large areas at affordable cost. The proposed solution is based on the use of a novel and robust electron multiplier, the Thick GEM (THGEM), arranged in a multilayer architecture, where the first layer is coated with a photosensitive CsI film. A systematic study of the response of THGEMs with various geometrical and production parameters and in different conditions was performed, leading to the choice of a set of optimal parameters. Prototypes of THGEM-based photon detectors able to efficiently detect Cherenkov photons have been built, tested in laboratory and operated in test beam exercises with typical gain of 105 and time resolution better than 10 ns. The engineering aspects of building large area (600×600 mm2) THGEM-based photon detectors are presently being investigated.

The COMPASS Collaboration at CERN has measured the transverse spin azimuthal asymmetry of charged hadrons produced in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering using a 160 GeV mu + beam and a ...transversely polarised NH3 target. The Sivers asymmetry of the proton has been extracted in the Bjorken x range 0.003 0.03 . The asymmetry is different from zero and positive also in the low x region, where sea-quarks dominate. The kinematic dependence of the asymmetry has also been investigated and results are given for various intervals of hadron and virtual photon fractional energy. In contrast to the case of the Collins asymmetry, the results on the Sivers asymmetry suggest a strong dependence on the four-momentum transfer to the nucleon, in agreement with the most recent calculations.

The COMPASS Collaboration at CERN has measured the transverse spin azimuthal asymmetry of charged hadrons produced in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering using a 160 GeV mu + beam and a ...transversely polarised NH3 target. The Collins asymmetry of the proton was extracted in the Bjorken x range 0.003 < x < 0.7 . These new precise measurements confirm previous measurements from the COMPASS and HERMES Collaborations, which exhibit a definite effect in the valence quark region. The asymmetries for negative and positive hadrons are similar in magnitude and opposite in sign. They are compatible with model calculations in which the u-quark transversity is opposite in sign and somewhat larger than the d-quark transversity distribution function. The asymmetry is extracted as a function of Bjorken x, the relative hadron energy z and the hadron transverse momentum p T h . The high statistics and quality of the data also allow for more detailed investigations of the dependence on the kinematic variables. These studies confirm the leading-twist nature of the Collins asymmetry.

The inclusive double-spin asymmetry, A1p, has been measured at COMPASS in deep-inelastic polarised muon scattering off a large polarised NH3 target. The data, collected in the year 2007, cover the ...range Q2>1(GeV/c)2, 0.004<x<0.7 and improve the statistical precision of g1p(x) by a factor of two in the region x<0.02. The new proton asymmetries are combined with those previously published for the deuteron to extract the non-singlet spin-dependent structure function g1NS(x,Q2). The isovector quark density, Δq3(x,Q2), is evaluated from a NLO QCD fit of g1NS. The first moment of Δq3 is in good agreement with the value predicted by the Bjorken sum rule and corresponds to a ratio of the axial and vector coupling constants |gA/gV|=1.28±0.07(stat.)±0.10(syst.).

We present a determination of the gluon polarisation Δg/g in the nucleon, based on the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry of DIS events with Q2>1 (GeV/c)2 including a pair of large ...transverse-momentum hadrons in the final state. The data were obtained by the COMPASS experiment at CERN using a 160 GeV/c polarised muon beam scattering off a polarised LiD6 target. The gluon polarisation is evaluated by a Neural Network approach for three intervals of the gluon momentum fraction xg covering the range 0.04<xg<0.27. The values obtained at leading order in QCD do not show any significant dependence on xg. Their average is Δg/g=0.125±0.060 (stat.)±0.063 (syst.) at average xg=0.09 and a scale of μ2=3 (GeV/c)2.
