We are developing a detector of single photons for application in Cherenkov imaging counters, based on the use of a multilayer architecture of THGEM electron multipliers coupled to a solid state CsI ...photocathode. The main goals of our project are ion feedback suppression down to a few per cent level, large gain, fast response, good time resolution, insensitivity to magnetic field and large detector size. We report about the project status and perspectives.

The transverse target spin azimuthal asymmetry A(UT)(sin(phi-phi s)) in hard exclusive production of rho(0) mesons was measured at COMPASS by scattering 160 GeV/c muons off transversely polarised ...protons and deuterons. The measured asymmetry is sensitive to the nucleon helicity-flip generalised parton distributions E-q, which are related to the orbital angular momentum of quarks in the nucleon. The Q(2), x-B-j and p(T)(2) dependence of A(UT)(sin(phi-phi s)) is presented in a wide kinematic range: 1 (GeV/c)(2) < Q(2) < 10 (GeV/c)(2), 0.003 < xB(j) < 0.3 and 0.05 (GeV/c)(2) < p(T)(2) < 0.5 (GeV/c)(2) for protons or 0.10 (GeV/c)(2) < p(T)(2) < 0.5 (GeV/c)(2) for deuterons. Results for deuterons are obtained for the first time. The measured asymmetry is small in the whole kinematic range for both protons and deuterons, which is consistent with the theoretical interpretation that contributions from GPDs E-u and E-d approximately cancel.

Today, many experiments in high energy physics have to handle data rates of several MHz per readout channel to reach statistical significance for the measured quantities. In addition, these ...experiments frequently have to deal with short analog pulses of a few nanoseconds length which may cover large dynamic ranges and which require amplitude as well as time measurements with highest accuracy. For applications of this kind fast transient recorders with very high resolution and deep on-board memory are the first choice. We have built a 16-channel 12- or 14-bit single unit VME64x/VXS sampling ADC module which may sample at rates up to 1GS/s. Fast algorithms have been developed and successfully tested on scintillating counter detectors to implement pulse shape discrimination, constant fraction timing and gated integration.

The HERMES hydrogen and deuterium nuclear-polarized gas targets have been in use since 1996 with the polarized electron beam of HERA at DESY to study the spin structure of the nucleon. Polarized ...atoms from a Stern–Gerlach Atomic Beam Source are injected into a storage cell internal to the HERA electron ring. Atoms diffusing from the center of the storage cell into a side tube are analyzed to determine the atomic fraction and the atomic polarizations. The atoms have a nuclear polarization, the axis of which is defined by an external magnetic holding field. The holding field was longitudinal during 1996–2000, and was changed to transverse in 2001. The design of the target is described, the method for analyzing the target polarization is outlined, and the performance of the target in the various running periods is presented.

The COMPASS Collaboration at CERN has investigated the reaction π − γ → π − π − π+ embedded in the Primakoff reaction of 190 GeV pions scattering in the Coulomb field of a lead target, π − Pb → π − π ...− π+Pb. Exchange of quasi-real photons is selected by isolating the sharp Coulomb peak observed at momentum transfer below 0.001 (GeV/c)2. Using a partial-wave analysis the amplitudes and relative phases of the a2(1320) and π2(1670) mesons have been extracted, and the Coulomb and the diffractive contributions have been disentangled. Measuring absolute production cross sections we have determined the radiative width of the a2(1320) to be Γ0(a2(1320) → πγ) = (358 ± 6stat ± 42syst) keV. As the first measurement, Γ0(π2(1670) → πγ) = (181 ± 11stat ± 27syst) keV · (BRPDG f2π /BRf2π) is obtained for the radiative width of the π2(1670), where in this analysis the branching ratio BRPDG f2π = 0.56 has been used. We compare these values to previous measurements and theoretical predictions.

A new read-out electronics system has been developed for the fast photon detection of the central region of the COMPASS RICH-1. The project is based on multi-anode photomultipliers read out by the ...high-sensitivity MAD4 preamplifier-discriminator and the dead-time free F1 TDC chip characterised by high time resolution. The system has been designed taking into account the high photon flux in the central region of the detector and the high rate requirement of the COMPASS experiment. The system is described in detail together with the measured performances. The new electronics system has been installed and used for the 2006 data taking; it entirely fulfils the expected performances.
