Black hole photon spheres or light rings are closely linked to astronomical phenomena, such as gravitational waves and the shadow in spherically symmetric or axisymmetric spacetime. In Cunha and ...Herdeiro Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 181101 (2020), a topological argument was applied for the four-dimensional stationary, axisymmetric, asymptotically flat black hole, and the result indicates that at least, there exists one standard light ring outside the black hole horizon for each rotation sense. Inspired by it, in this paper, we would like to consider a similar issue for a nonrotating, static, spherically symmetric black hole not only with asymptotically flat behavior, but also with AdS and dS behaviors. Following Duan's topological current ϕ -mapping theory, the topological current and charge for the photon spheres are introduced. The topological current is nonzero only at the zero point of the vector field determining the location of the photon sphere. So each photon sphere can be assigned a topological charge. Considering the full exterior region, we find the total topological charge always equals − 1 . This result confirms that there exists at least one standard photon sphere outside of the black hole not only in asymptotically flat spacetime, but also in asymptotically AdS and dS spacetime. Then we apply the study to the dyonic black holes. We observe that even when more photon spheres are included, the total topological charge stays unchanged. Moreover, for a naked singularity, it has a vanishing topological charge, indicating that the black hole and naked singularity are in different topological classes. It is expected that this novel topological argument could provide an insightful idea on the study of the black hole photon spheres or light rings, and further cast new light on the black hole astronomical phenomena.

Sentiment analysis in conversations has gained increasing attention in recent years for the growing amount of applications it can serve, e.g., sentiment analysis, recommender systems, and human-robot interaction. The main difference between conversational sentiment analysis and single sentence sentiment analysis is the existence of context information that may influence the sentiment of an utterance in a dialogue. How to effectively encode contextual information in dialogues, however, remains a challenge. Existing approaches employ complicated deep learning structures to distinguish different parties in a conversation and then model the context information. In this paper, we propose a fast, compact and parameter-efficient party-ignorant framework named bidirectional emotional recurrent unit for conversational sentiment analysis. In our system, a generalized neural tensor block followed by a two-channel classifier is designed to perform context compositionality and sentiment classification, respectively. Extensive experiments on three standard datasets demonstrate that our model outperforms the state of the art in most cases.

In this paper, spoof surface plasmon polariton (SPP) is integrated in the closed substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) structure and a novel hybrid SIW-SPP guided-wave transmission line (TL) is ...proposed. In this design, the surface wave mode of SPP can be excited and transmitted inside the closed structure of SIW. The dispersion property of the proposed SIW-SPP hybrid structure indicates that it has both slow wave feature of SPP and fast-wave feature of SIW. With the low-pass feature of SSP and the high-pass feature of SIW, the proposed hybrid SIW-SPP TL becomes a bandpass filter (BPF) naturally. The concept of integrating SPP and SIW opens a new way to develop novel wideband BPFs. A broadband filter is fabricated to verify the theory and the measured passband is from 16.1 to 25.4 GHz with a relative bandwidth of 43.8%. The filter bandwidth can be easily controlled by tuning parameters, thus the proposed structure is attractive and useful for the design of various BPFs.
The discovery of new four-dimensional black hole solutions presents a new approach to understand the Gauss-Bonnet gravity in low dimensions. In this paper, we test the Gauss-Bonnet gravity by ...studying the phase transition and microstructures for the four-dimensional charged anti–de Sitter black hole. In the extended phase space, where the cosmological constant and the Gauss-Bonnet coupling parameter are treated as thermodynamic variables, we find that the thermodynamic first law and the corresponding Smarr formula are satisfied. Both in the canonical ensemble and grand canonical ensemble, we observe the small-large black hole phase transition, which is similar to the case of the van der Walls fluid. This phase transition can also appear in the neutral black hole system. Furthermore, we construct the Ruppeiner geometry, and find that besides the attractive interaction, the repulsive interaction can also dominate among the microstructures for the small black hole with high temperature in a charged or neutral black hole system. This is quite different from the five-dimensional neutral black hole, for which only dominant attractive interaction can be found. The critical behaviors of the normalized scalar curvature are also examined. These results will shed new light into the characteristic property of four-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet gravity.

Air pollution constitutes a significant stimulus of asthma exacerbations; however, the impacts of exposure to major air pollutants on asthma-related hospital admissions and emergency room visits ...(ERVs) have not been fully determined.
We sought to quantify the associations between short-term exposure to air pollutants ozone (O3), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and particulate matter ≤10 μm (PM10) and PM2.5 and the asthma-related emergency room visits (ERV) and hospitalizations.
Systematic computerized searches without language limitation were performed. Pooled relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CIs) were estimated using the random-effect models. Sensitivity analyses and subgroup analyses were also performed.
After screening of 246 studies, 87 were included in our analyses. Air pollutants were associated with significantly increased risks of asthma ERVs and hospitalizations O3: RR(95%CI), 1.009 (1.006, 1.011); I2 = 87.8%, population-attributable fraction (PAF) (95%CI): 0.8 (0.6, 1.1); CO: RR(95%CI), 1.045 (1.029, 1.061); I2 = 85.7%, PAF (95%CI): 4.3 (2.8, 5.7); NO2: RR(95%CI), 1.018 (1.014, 1.022); I2 = 87.6%, PAF (95%CI): 1.8 (1.4, 2.2); SO2: RR(95%CI), 1.011 (1.007, 1.015); I2 = 77.1%, PAF (95%CI): 1.1 (0.7, 1.5); PM10: RR(95%CI), 1.010 (1.008, 1.013); I2 = 69.1%, PAF (95%CI): 1.1 (0.8, 1.3); PM2.5: RR(95%CI), 1.023 (1.015, 1.031); I2 = 82.8%, PAF (95%CI): 2.3 (1.5, 3.1). Sensitivity analyses yielded compatible findings as compared with the overall analyses without publication bias. Stronger associations were found in hospitalized males, children and elderly patients in warm seasons with lag of 2 days or greater.
Short-term exposures to air pollutants account for increased risks of asthma-related ERVs and hospitalizations that constitute a considerable healthcare utilization and socioeconomic burden.

A novel four-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity was formulated by Glavan and Lin (Phys. Rev. Lett. 124:081301, 2020), which is intended to bypass the Lovelock’s theorem and to yield a ...non-trivial contribution to the four-dimensional gravitational dynamics. However, the validity and consistency of this theory has been called into question recently. We study a static and spherically symmetric black hole charged by a Born–Infeld electric field in the novel four-dimensional Einstein–Gauss–Bonnet gravity. It is found that the black hole solution still suffers the singularity problem, since particles incident from infinity can reach the singularity. It is also demonstrated that the Born-Infeld charged black hole may be superior to the Maxwell charged black hole to be a charged extension of the Schwarzschild-AdS-like black hole in this new gravitational theory. Some basic thermodynamics of the black hole solution is also analyzed. Besides, we regain the black hole solution in the regularized four-dimensional Einstein–Gauss–Bonnet gravity proposed by Lü and Pang (

Microtubules and molecular motors are essential components of the cellular cytoskeleton, driving fundamental processes in vivo, including chromosome segregation and cargo transport. When ...reconstituted in vitro, these cytoskeletal proteins serve as energy-consuming building blocks to study the self-organization of active matter. Cytoskeletal active gels display rich emergent dynamics, including extensile flows, locally contractile asters, and bulk contraction. However, it is unclear how the protein-protein interaction kinetics set their contractile or extensile nature. Here, we explore the origin of the transition from extensile bundles to contractile asters in a minimal reconstituted system composed of stabilized microtubules, depletant, adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP), and clusters of kinesin-1 motors. We show that the microtubule-binding and unbinding kinetics of highly processive motor clusters set their ability to end-accumulate, which can drive polarity sorting of the microtubules and aster formation. We further demonstrate that the microscopic time scale of end-accumulation sets the emergent time scale of aster formation. Finally, we show that biochemical regulation is insufficient to fully explain the transition as generic aligning interactions through depletion, cross-linking, or excluded volume interactions can drive bundle formation despite end-accumulating motors. The extensile-to-contractile transition is well captured by a simple self-assembly model where nematic and polar aligning interactions compete to form either bundles or asters. Starting from a five-dimensional organization phase space, we identify a single control parameter given by the ratio of the different component concentrations that dictates the material-scale organization. Overall, this work shows that the interplay of biochemical and mechanical tuning at the microscopic level controls the robust self-organization of active cytoskeletal materials.
Self-assembly of complex and functional materials remains a grand challenge in soft material science. By contrast, we introduce an assembly paradigm that allows large error-tolerance in the subunit affinity and helps avoid kinetic traps. Our combined experimental and computational approach uses a model system of triangular subunits programmed to assemble into
= 3 icosahedral capsids comprising 60 units. The experimental platform uses DNA origami to create monodisperse colloids whose three-dimensional geometry is controlled to nanometer precision, with two distinct bonds whose affinities are controlled to
precision, quantified in situ by static light scattering. The computational model uses a coarse-grained representation of subunits, short-ranged potentials, and Langevin dynamics. Experimental observations and modeling reveal that when the bond affinities are unequal, two distinct
assembly pathways occur, in which the subunits first form dimers in one case and pentamers in another. These hierarchical pathways produce complete capsids faster and are more robust against affinity variation than egalitarian pathways, in which all binding sites have equal strengths. This finding suggests that hierarchical assembly may be a general engineering principle for optimizing self-assembly of complex target structures.
In this paper, we analytically study the phase structure and construct the Ruppeiner geometry in the extended phase space for the five-dimensional neutral Gauss-Bonnet AdS black hole. Through ...calculating the scalar curvature of the Ruppeiner geometry and combining the phase transition, we show that the attractive interaction is dominant in the microstructure of the black hole system. More significantly, there is an intriguing property that the normalized scalar curvature has the same expression for the saturated small and large black hole curves. This implies that although the microstructure is different before and after the small-large black hole phase transition, the interaction between the microscopic constituents keeps unchanged. These results are quite valuable on further understanding the microstructure of the AdS black hole in modified gravity.

Liquid crystalline phases of matter often exhibit visually stunning patterns or textures. Mostly, these liquid crystal (LC) configurations are uniquely determined by bulk LC elasticity, surface ...anchoring conditions, and confinement geometry. Here, we experimentally explore defect textures of the smectic LC phase in unique confining geometries with variable curvature. We show that a complex range of director configurations can arise from a single system, depending on sample processing procedures. Specifically, we report on LC textures in Janus drops comprised of silicone oil and 8CB in its smectic-A LC phase. The Janus droplets were made in aqueous suspension using solvent-induced phase separation. After drop creation, smectic layers form in the LC compartment, but their self-assembly is frustrated by the need to accommodate both the bowl-shaped cavity geometry and homeotropic (perpendicular) anchoring conditions at boundaries. A variety of stable and metastable smectic textures arise, including focal conic domains, dislocation rings, and undulations. We experimentally characterize their stabilities and follow their spatiotemporal evolution. Overall, a range of fabrication kinetics produce very different intermediate and final states. The observations elucidate assembly mechanisms and suggest new routes for fabrication of complex soft material structures in Janus drops and other confinement geometries.
