Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) offer a way to interact with computers without relying on physical movements. Non-invasive electroencephalography (EEG)-based visual BCIs, known for efficient speed ...and calibration ease, face limitations in continuous tasks due to discrete stimulus design and decoding methods. To achieve continuous control, we implemented a novel spatial encoding stimulus paradigm and devised a corresponding projection method to enable continuous modulation of decoded velocity. Subsequently, we conducted experiments involving 17 participants and achieved Fitt's ITR of 0.55 bps for the fixed tracking task and 0.37 bps for the random tracking task. The proposed BCI with a high Fitt's ITR was then integrated into two applications, including painting and gaming. In conclusion, this study proposed a visual BCI-based control method to go beyond discrete commands, allowing natural continuous control based on neural activity.
The ultimate goal of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) based on visual modulation paradigms is to achieve high-speed performance without the burden of extensive calibration. Code-modulated visual ...evoked potential-based BCIs (cVEP-BCIs) modulated by broadband white noise (WN) offer various advantages, including increased communication speed, expanded encoding target capabilities, and enhanced coding flexibility. However, the complexity of the spatial-temporal patterns under broadband stimuli necessitates extensive calibration for effective target identification in cVEP-BCIs. Consequently, the information transfer rate (ITR) of cVEP-BCI under limited calibration usually stays around 100 bits per minute (bpm), significantly lagging behind state-of-the-art steady-state visual evoked potential-based BCIs (SSVEP-BCIs), which achieve rates above 200 bpm. To enhance the performance of cVEP-BCIs with minimal calibration, we devised an efficient calibration stage involving a brief single-target flickering, lasting less than a minute, to extract generalizable spatial-temporal patterns. Leveraging the calibration data, we developed two complementary methods to construct cVEP temporal patterns: the linear modeling method based on the stimulus sequence and the transfer learning techniques using cross-subject data. As a result, we achieved the highest ITR of 250 bpm under a minute of calibration, which has been shown to be comparable to the state-of-the-art SSVEP paradigms. In summary, our work significantly improved the cVEP performance under few-shot learning, which is expected to expand the practicality and usability of cVEP-BCIs.
The mission of visual brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) is to enhance information transfer rate (ITR) to reach high speed towards real-life communication. Despite notable progress, noninvasive visual ...BCIs have encountered a plateau in ITRs, leaving it uncertain whether higher ITRs are achievable. In this study, we investigate the information rate limits of the primary visual channel to explore whether we can and how we should build visual BCI with higher information rate. Using information theory, we estimate a maximum achievable ITR of approximately 63 bits per second (bps) with a uniformly-distributed White Noise (WN) stimulus. Based on this discovery, we propose a broadband WN BCI approach that expands the utilization of stimulus bandwidth, in contrast to the current state-of-the-art visual BCI methods based on steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEPs). Through experimental validation, our broadband BCI outperforms the SSVEP BCI by an impressive margin of 7 bps, setting a new record of 50 bps. This achievement demonstrates the possibility of decoding 40 classes of noninvasive neural responses within a short duration of only 0.1 seconds. The information-theoretical framework introduced in this study provides valuable insights applicable to all sensory-evoked BCIs, making a significant step towards the development of next-generation human-machine interaction systems.
The experimental discovery of Weyl semimetals offers unprecedented opportunities to study Weyl physics in condensed matters. Unique electromagnetic response of Weyl semimetals such as chiral magnetic ...effect has been observed and presented by the axial θ E · B term in electromagnetic Lagrangian (E and B are the electric and magnetic field, respectively). But till now, the experimental progress in this direction in Weyl semimetals is restricted to the DC regime. Here we report experimental access to the dynamic regime in Weyl semimetal NbAs by combining the internal deformation potential of coupled phonons with applied static magnetic field. While the dynamic E · B field is realized, it produces an anomalous phonon activity with a characteristic angle-dependence. Our results provide an effective approach to achieve the dynamic regime beyond the widely-investigated DC limit which enables the coupling between the Weyl fermions and the electromagnetic wave for further study of novel light-matter interactions in Weyl semimetals.
Despite advances in colorectal cancer (CRC) treatment, most advanced CRC patients who experience disease progression after chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy face a situation in which ...there is no available medicine. Thus, new therapeutic drugs for CRC are urgently needed. Studies have shown that cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) has a vital role in tumor development and is a possible target for CRC therapy. We found that Evacetrapib, a CETP inhibitor, suppressed CRC cell growth by inhibiting the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway and activating the c-Jun NH2-terminal kinase (JNK) signaling pathway in CRC. Therefore, Evacetrapib displays an anti-cancer effect and is a possible option for treating CRC.
Metals cannot exhibit ferroelectricity because static internal electric fields are screened by conduction electrons, but in 1965, Anderson and Blount predicted the possibility of a ferroelectric ...metal, in which a ferroelectric-like structural transition occurs in the metallic state. Up to now, no clear example of such a material has been identified. Here we report on a centrosymmetric (R3c) to non-centrosymmetric (R3c) transition in metallic LiOsO3 that is structurally equivalent to the ferroelectric transition of LiNbO3 (ref. 3). The transition involves a continuous shift in the mean position of Li(+) ions on cooling below 140 K. Its discovery realizes the scenario described in ref. 2, and establishes a new class of materials whose properties may differ from those of normal metals.

Under pressures of 0–30 GPa, the density functional theory was applied to investigate the structural, electronic, mechanical, optical and thermodynamic properties of cubic LiMgF3 for the first time. ...According to the crystal mechanical stability conditions, LiMgF3 will undergo phase transition when the pressure is greater than 31.7 GPa. According to the mechanical properties calculations, it gets harder and more ductile and anisotropic as pressure rises. The electrical calculations reveal that LiMgF3 has an indirect band gap of 5.776 eV, which grows with pressure. The optical properties show that LiMgF3 has the characteristics of low reflectivity and refractive index in the ultraviolet region, which is suitable as window material and lens material. Additionally, all spectra are blue shifted as pressure rises. By using quasi-harmonic Debye model, it is possible to anticipate how temperature and pressure would affect relative volume, bulk modulus, thermal expansion coefficient, heat capacity, and relative Debye temperature.

Abstract Charge density wave (CDW) orders in vanadium-based kagome metals have recently received tremendous attention, yet their origin remains a topic of debate. The discovery of ScV 6 Sn 6 , a ...bilayer kagome metal featuring an intriguing $$\sqrt{3}\times\sqrt{3}\times3$$ 3 × 3 × 3 CDW order, offers a novel platform to explore the underlying mechanism behind the unconventional CDW. Here, we combine high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, Raman scattering and density functional theory to investigate the electronic structure and phonon modes of ScV 6 Sn 6 . We identify topologically nontrivial surface states and multiple van Hove singularities (VHSs) in the vicinity of the Fermi level, with one VHS aligning with the in-plane component of the CDW vector near the $$\bar{K}$$ K ¯ point. Additionally, Raman measurements indicate a strong electron-phonon coupling, as evidenced by a two-phonon mode and new emergent modes. Our findings highlight the fundamental role of lattice degrees of freedom in promoting the CDW in ScV 6 Sn 6 .
